Dunphy is spot on. RTE dislikes anyone who is un-PC, who says it as it is

Dunphy, Giles, Brady with Bill O' Herlihy was the golden era of sport analysts, we'll never have the likes of them on RTÉ again, the banter and arguments was the main reason we all watched the analysis of football games, just look at these 3 on this off the ball programme, they're enough to put a valium to sleep.!! 😴

Unfortunately, the English viewing public have little knowledge of Dunphy, which is a shame really as he is more charismatic and intelligent a pundit than anyone we have this side of the water. Our loss sadly. A real sui generis.

Come on.... the fella was pantomime terrible predictions and no real analysis, the equivalent of a pundit shock jock.
He became a parody of himself.
He should have gone 15 years ago.

Well, I've only watched him from afar to be honest, so the occasional snippet off RUclips probably doesn't make me qualified to contest your point of view, nevertheless compared to what we have in England, he makes our lot seem so dull and robotic. Even when Dunphy talks nonsense, which i'll concede he does in some videos, it's passionate nonsense all the same. Then again, most UK broadcasters would feel threatened by his shoot from the hip approach to analysis, hence why he's probably never featured on our networks.

Most English TV pundits are the other extreme of dunphy. They are afraid to say anything controversial in case they might offend someone.
At times there is such reverence given to players English ones in particular, they almost seem like royal correspondents!
I have been watching and listening to Dunphy for 30 years now.
He knows how to get noticed and make himself the star.
An extremely good self-publicist. But the inconsistency and the amount of flip flopping he did became laughable, in the last decade or so.

nigefal he said what pundits on the BBC and sky would never say, he had his opinions correct about a lot.

With respect (as the real Gerry used to be fond of saying) if you made a collage of things he said about the same subjects over even a short period of time there is ZERO consistency. If you fired out comments about everything and anything. Then kept changing your mind like Dunphy did. I would hardly call it correct. I would call it bluffing.
Or to use a phrase the Dunphy himself was fond of saying about others he was 'a bit of a spoofer'.

Love Dunphy. What was wrong with him? I watch the program in Brazil just for Dunphy. He always has an opinion whether right or wrong. He is certainly not boring and if it is agism, young people also enjoy a difficult ol' man telling is view. He creates conversation too.

He often told it how it was, and that's to be respected. But he was also the king of contradiction, spouting on about players and leagues he knew little or nothing about just for the sake of something controversial to say.

I think in years to come - if not already - people will look back on the bill eamon giles and brady panel with nostalgia. It was entertaining! At least they spoke their mind and were able to have debates...some punditry these days can be boring at times.

Dunphy has a major point... just 2 words; JOE BROLLY....rte is anodyne beyond belief; in the words of Brian Lenihan Sr. as he popped his head around CJH's door to manifest forgiveness & friendship ( which CJH ill-merited ): "They're all running around like headless chickens, the bland leading the bland.. .."

  • @karlclifford1176

Giles, Dunphy and Brady were excellent at a time, but I just think that over the last few years they really haven’t known their stuff and done their homework on other teams. Like, I don’t think they’d be able to tell you the first thing happening about somebody like RB Leipzig, and I don’t think they knew much about that Croatian side and some of their lesser known players. He talked about Hoolahan as if he was Lionel Messi, but he couldn’t start for Norwich in the championship, and was something like 33, 34 at the Euros, and while he was the only guy in the team who seemed to be able to string passes together, you couldnt build a team on that. He’d a good personality and he gave his opinion, but so does Roy Keane and Dunphy called him out for the very same thing. I think the man is a clown, albeit an entertaining clown.

People are too hard on RTE. The greatest crisis facing humanity today is that people at home on couch's feel like their gender, race and sexuality is under represented on TV. RTE lost the rugby, some soccer, and GAA coverage, but it was all worth it, because they could afford to fly Hope Solo all the way from the U.S and pay her lots of money to readdress the balance. My only hope is that we eventually have Ru Paul replace Joe brolly...

Although I don't always `agree with him, Dunphy is very much an individual in a media world that has become bland, safe, and predictable. RTE is in financial disarray because the organisation suffers from inertial forces and a lack of innovation. RTE was a leading institution in Ireland prior to satellite TV, cable TV, the Internet, the Mobile Network, and all the innovations that have emerged in the digital media ecosystem (e.g. Netflix, Amazon Prime, gaming, social media etc.). The competitive space has radically changed and incumbent like RTE are not flexible enough to respond to these changes. They need to scale down (begin by reducing the ridiculous wages they pay presenters) and then maybe set up a separate company that has complete autonomy to innovate in the digital space while complementing the more traditional (and scaled down) business model. Lastly, although I grew up in Ireland, I am now living in London. It strikes me as strange that a state broadcaster like RTE that demands a rather high TV licence fee while also generating revenue for the sale of advertisements and yet be in such financial disarray? Dunphy is jumping from a sinking ship…
