This story will never be completely finished unless you continue with Harold Godwinson and William the bastard.. hint hint 😉 really looking forward to seeing this
Well William the bastard is now known as William a conqueror. He's technically the ancestor of Charles the Third that it sits on the throne of England today.
Se my comment
Check out the story of godred crovan, fled the battle of Stamford Bridge and went on to invade and take over the Isle of Man, really interesting story
*Age of Empires II Intensifies*
@@ForgottenIslands
Really pleased someone mentioned Stamford Bridge.
The East Riding, and North Yorkshire are both full of Viking history, as well as Saxon, Roman and Dark Age.
York, Scarborough, Whitby, Howden, and Beverley are just a few of the places worth a visit if you're keen on this period in History.
Stamford Bridge was host to a lesser known battle in 1454, the belligerents being the Percy and Neville families, who were both very powerful landowners at the time. Quite the history for such a small place!
I didn't expect him to be such a brutal king after what part 1 was like. Power really is a terrible burden.
There definitely is a turning point in the story where Harald, who was famed as a warrior, comes to be considered wicked by his contemporaries. To the very end, I felt Harald was a much better warrior than a he was a king.
Trying to hold onto power can really test a person and their morals. For some reason Edrogan, Putin, and Xi come to mind.
Being a leader ironically takes away a lot of personal freedom and you're constantly surrounded by people who want to knock you down. When you sacrifice so much of yourself, it's hard not to be jaded about life.
@@HistoryDose Given his situation maybe being wicked was a good course? We can't expect Kings of the past to always be virtuous and nice to be effective. Ceaser and Napoleon by some extent were both tyrants, great leaders though...
@@James-ip8xs i think its pretty much settled that in order to be an effective leader/ruler you need to be abit of an arsehole
I read a story that Tostig and Harald Hardrada parlayed with a single rider before the Battle of Stamford bridge. The lone rider spoke only to Tostig and offered him his earldom back if he turned on Harald Hardrada. Tostig then asked what his brother would be willing to give to Hardrada for coming all the way to England. The lone rider replied, “Seven feet of English Ground, as he is taller than other men.” Then the lone rider went back to the Saxon host. Hardrada was impressed by the rider’s boldness, and asked Tostig who he was. Tostig replied that the rider was Tostig’s brother, Harold Godwinson himself.
Harold Godwinson was apparently a really decent guy for the time.
Harold Godwinsson was a two faced injun giver ( not a man of his word) I absolutely believe the account of him pledging his support in any dispute over the English throne with William as he was only prepared to do so to get himself out of a tight spot after being shipwrecked. He was quite o.k. with pretending to give his word but after said he was tricked into it and hadn't realised Holy relics were concealed where he swore. His genes live on in bankers and real estate agents.
@@iloveyoushima He was an elected leader during a time when most Europeans were led by whomever was squirted out of the "correct" womb fertilized by the "correct" seed.
@@iloveyoushimaExcept in the part where the usurped the throne from William of Normandy.
@@yibithehispanic He didnt usurp the throne at all, He was just the chosen claimant from the Witan. To usurp is to take the throne by force from a active king. If anything, William was the usurper
Impressive how pragmatic feudal kings were. Harald and Svein united to take Norway and Denmark, yet when both goals were accomplished, they became enemies.
Alot of ale drinking will do that to even the closest friends
Like Tolkien puts it,
Power serves no one
Figures, only people with a limitless drive could ever become king, which means they'd only stop when they're dead or when they have no more equals.
This is an awesome but kinda tragic epic. Having watched The Northman this feels like I’m watching another Viking saga movie in the same era and places but unconnected.
The Northman was such a cool😎 movie. Robert Eggers is pretty cool guy
@@chrisdiaz4876 Robert Eggar’s movies are phenomenal and pretty underrated.
Northman is a play from William Shakespears - Hamlet.
Check out the true story of the Northman. The real story was sooooo much more interesting! The guy faked being retarded and some more stuff! Thank me later brother!
Still just a play from Hamlet.
Truly magnificent video, the visuals of the main protagonists well researched and closer to reality than most I have seen, Harold and Tostig Godwinson obviously looking like related brothers, William of Normandy clean shaven as he actually was, king Harald looking every inch the Lightning of the North!
Thanks! We take a lot of care to ground each portrait in as many historical references as we can find, so I'm glad to see it's been noticed.
@@HistoryDose do you have the portraits done each episode yourself
@@richmeggison his brother makes all the artwork
Also William’s hair is portrayed in the Norman fashion which was cool to see
@@HistoryDose Great channel but I have to say the sound mixing was terrible in this video. The background music was way too loud to the point where I had trouble hearing you. Frankly, I firmly believe background music is annoying, distracting, and unnecessary (especially for educational videos). I also believe people want to hear you speak and get information and not hear background music that they have to mentally filter out.
This channel does history the greatest service. Please never stop. These stories are unbelievable
Vlad the Impaler deserves a similar video. He was also bloodthirsty and ruthless. A demon to his enemies and his subjects.
💯
Vlad was great
Vlad was great for resisting Mehmed 2 and the Turkish devils.
Dan Davis has a great video on him
Hope he makes a video about him
props to Magnus and Harald for somehow managing the co-rulership in spite of their dislike of each other
You should check out the Norwegian Crusade starring Harald's great grandsons. They were three co-kings who ruled together in harmony, and while two of them managed the realm, Sigurd went on a legendary crusade to the Holy Land and became the first king to crusade in the world. Sigurd is a legend and I hope for a History Dose on him more than anything
@@misterStevePikk Starring Harald's great grandsons? They had movies back then!?
@@James-ip8xs no but custom ordered ballads/sagas - how do you think they became famous? 😉😁
I love your rendering of William, he truly was a pretty brutal ruler and his takeover was, and is still in many ways, viewed in England as akin to Sauron winning The War Of The Ring.
Likely the origin of Anglo-Frankish hostilities, no?
Without William and the Normans, England would have likely never accomplished much.
True, but he did make laws that largely banned slavery in England

You have done Harald well Other Vikings or even The Saxon Kings you'd do well. Also Charlemagne or his Grand Father would be good choices for new videos.
In terms of Effects and Voice there amazing make sure the artist is paid well and make sure there hand rests well enough. In terms of Voice your doing amazing and should pat yourself on the back.
@@marcus4046 Charlemagne is a GREAT IDEA. His empire is also the lands Rollo would raid after Charlemagne's death, later Normandy was given to rollo in the reign of Louis the Pious as the first daneguild, with promises of military aid from northmen by northmen and baptism of said northmen Rollo. This is why Normandy had adopted "french customs" and religion.then eventually inherited to Rollo's grandson WILLIAM THE DUKE OF NORMANDY 😎 as the "french" king of England. But his family really was more like a viking breed in recovery with the lands they owned lol. William the conqueror would even go as far as to beat a french king in a battle of which I can't remember the name of😅 in a dispute over MILITARY SUPERIORITY. It's all crazy man 😂 a time of warrior kings for sure. Cool stuff. Hope to see tons more on it 2 for sure.
Don't forget the story of Hugh Glass 👀
Are we not going to talk about how beautiful this video looks? Amazing production
I just wanna know what exact music he did for this not just the artists like what songs.....
Perfect video & research. No other channel can producde content with this level of Quality. My favorite scene was the battle of stamford bridge, where you saw a panorama of the battlefield.
Wondering who the artist is…

Insane quality. You are by far my favorite history channel. I had goosebumps throughout the whole video
I got so pumped! Then so sad cuz it's the 17th today. Looking forward to this alot! Recently found your channel and binge watched it. Amazing art visuals and storytelling!

How many fucking channels are you going to copy paste this too?
King Harold :- We defend against the Normans .
Harald and Tostig :- Free land guys .
Willaim :- The damn weather .
King Harold :- Are these bastards teaming up on me or what ?
Gotta feel for Godwinson, he was truly a chad trying to do right by the people of Anglo-Saxon England. His mistake was in falling for William's trap in his razing of the countryside to provoke him to attack before collecting the might of England.
Would've been interesting to see what would've happened if Godwinson prevailed and the Anglo-Norse connection remained more prominent than the Anglo-French. It's likely that the isles would've unified much sooner and Denmark/Norway/British Isles would've formed a power bloc instead of Denmark/Norway/Sweden. Who knows, maybe it would've kept connections to Iceland/Greenland/even Vinland more active, as these settlements were active around the same time.
No other history Channel do I excitingly await video uploads. These are so good dude. Your research and story telling everything your voice was made for this!
The artwork and the music of this episode is amazing.

Brilliant
I just finished reading "The Last Viking: The True Story of Harald Hardrada" by Don Hollway and these two videos talking about the Hard Ruler did help me clarify many things about him. I can say that these epic videos are really based on true story, congratulations!
I Saw it in King and generals I Saw it in Invicta but YOU ARE THE BEST
That was fucking sick. You guys did a great job creating this video👍
Thank you for these. It's like watching the history Channel before they started running shows that have nothing to do with history 24/7. Keep up the amazing work
Wow! As an englishman I love the little realizations your videos can give me. Like when you mentioned "skardaborg" I immediately realised "oh my god that where Scarborough must get its name from 🤯
Please do a follow up on Godwinson and William the conqueror! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I never understood why Harold Hadrada didn’t just retreat at Stamford bridge as soon as he saw the full English army approaching?
I respect the bravery but pulling back to armour up and choose a proper battleground would’ve been the far smarter thing to do
It can only be assumed why he didnt want to pull back, if i remember correctly, the sagas state that his officers suggested him to do so.
As we know, he had formed a circular anti-cavalry formation and he was fighting for time for the reinforcements at Riccal to arrive, my theory is that if his army was still intact (and Harald alive) upon the arrival of the reinforcements, the Anglo saxons would be caught offguard. This did happen, yes, but at this point the main army was broken
What a brutal era to live in. Men were truly warriors back then, you had no choice but to grow up fast and be a man. Unlike the snowflake years of today crying over a rainbow flag.
netflix or amazon should make a tv series with Harald as the main character.Change my mind.
His life is way too brutal and his character way too unapologetically violent for netflix . Impossible to produce something like this in today's climate .
Would absolutely awesome through, what a life this guy had
@@JayzsMr as brutal as ivar the boneless in "vikings ". So,not a problem.
Honestly the best story telling, actually gets my heart beating 😂
An epic tale told in similar fashion. Thank You. No wonder his life took on hardened actions as he witnessed his half-brother Olaf die as King in the battle of Stiklestad, Norway while he was just 15. He was reportedly over 7 feet tall. This physical stature and being of princely origin in exile would harden you and would have thrust him into some positions of leadership and authority at such a young age. Having travelled as a mercenary Varangian to Kiev, the Holy Roman Empire, and also south to the holy land and Sicily... travel in those days also had to harden you. To hear the tale of Harald Hardrada is to bask in the peel of historical lore. It doesn't get any better.
Lol I literally just finished the first video, how coincidental.
Also I'm gonna keep asking, can you make a video about the life of Hugh Glass?
dude yes!
@@rayrocker2112 I am hoping we get it, a combination of FANTASTIC illustration and narration, combined with a nearly unbelievable life story.
Yessir! Can't wait to hear another top tier historical story time needs to hurry up 😂🙌
So ended the last viking king, last of the line of the Norse kings, dead in a battle far from his home attempting to once again take Britain.
Every single video you guys put out does such an amazing job absorbing us into the world. Your story telling is as brilliant as always!
Interesting about the river, "nisa" Which today is Nissan, and goes through the City of Halmstad.
You are an amazing storyteller! Your videos are like an epic movie! Thanks for giving them to us, especially today when Hollywood doesn't do it anymore!
if you have seen vikings, you can see where they based a lot of the things on. they gave allot of Harald 's story and ending to Ivar !
I have binge watched almost everything from your channel in a couple of days. You know and research your topics but you know how to find and tell the story of it with perfect picks of art and music almost makes it a movie or at least it does for me !
“The king finally had to turn back when the limit of the world disappeared before his very eyes and he barely escaped the gaping ravine of the abyss.”

Amazing! I knew it was going to be good but damn, you guys out did yourselves once again.
Thanks Strat! A lot of work went into this one!
Masterpiece video as always!! Thank you!
To Valhalla! You could imagine Harald screaming as they engaged the English. What a truly epic story book life of adventure! One more throw of the dice on an old claim to the English throne was one gamble too many. A shame we don't have the name of the Viking warrior on the bridge. Well done as always! Love the art work. Harald chose violence every day. My man just couldn't be happy as King of Norway 🤣 🤣 🤣
I feel like if I could go back in time, and live any historical figures life, Harald would've been the best. The adventure would be amazing, the only drawback, violence on another level.
Through 2 videos your channel has become a reason why I like RUclips again. The quality of your content is just mind boggling, absolute amazing.
This is so awesome 👍👍👍. Man you really have talent. Thank you for putting all the work into these videos, they are so cool. I hope you can cover some of William the conquerors descendants and how they participated in the holy crusades. There was cannibalism, sickness, greed, infighting and all kinds of crazy stuff in the first crusade. It was also deemed the most successful. Especially when crusaders "fought ankle deep in the blood of Muslims in the land of god" shouting dues vault. Or "God wills it". Just something in history I WOULD LOVE to see @historydoce depict. Thank you for the video man we were all hyped and HYPE WELL MET lol. Killed it guys. Have a good 1. Or ig Harald would say "SKÖL" or something like that 😂✌️👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥
Thank you! We will definitely get to the Crusades at some point. Joe would have a blast making the art for that one, too.
@@HistoryDose AWESOME THANK YOU God bless y'all keep up the great work 👍👍👍👍😊🇺🇲
The very important detail that the viking army was unprepared and largely unarmoured at Stamford Bridge is only mentioned in passing. I feel like it's kind of critical - the battle is presented as a pitched battle with both sides fighting at peak capacity (as if the viking army would willingly go into battle without their armour!), when in truth Harold himself was a very competent general and moved his army faster than Harald expected, catching him off guard, army separated and unarmoured.
I dont know why i hate the show Vikings, but i find the real history more entertaining like i tried watching the show but i just couldnt, hell i couldnt even watch The Last Kingdom, Vinland Saga, or GOT. Why i hate all the popular stuff is beyond me probably because the original story is always better, or maybe im just not into that type of stuff.
The quotes are so cool, idk why but they poked out to me I couldn’t help but reply so I can hear them again. Especially the one that told how Harappa troops didn’t surrender, how badass
Amazing video! As always, the art is top notch and the narration epic. I hope we get more eastern Roman history though, maybe the battle of Kleidion (1014) and the brutal treatment of the Bulgarian captives by Basil II?
Always amazing stories and visuals , and happy holidays to you and yours
Excellent cast..,,so both brothers died of 🏹 to the eye 👁,,didn't know that
Harald's end may have been for the best. Man was brutal. I'm curious to know now if Scandinavia continued drowning in endless bloodbaths or if Harald's heirs ruled with a lighter touch in comparison.
A full episode about William's Invasion and the battle of Hastings would be awesome.
A whole episode bout one battle ? What was said is all that needs to be said what y’all want him to talk bout everyone there and where they went lmao ?
You should do a video about Gotz von Berlichingen
You never really think about what happens to the end of an era. The Last Viking, The end of the Pirate Age, the End of the Wild West. Ages so remembered they’re practically mythologized and eventually ended.
Great content and knowledge as always 🤌🏾 Thanks brother 🤙🏾💪🏾
Can you do one about Dusan "the mighty" of Serbia or king Lazar i really like your vids feels like watching a movie
Harald Hardrada is the villain of his own story
Harald Hardrada should arrived to England some few weeks later and let William the Bastard do the first battle for him agains King Harold Godwinson. Harald Hardrada could than finnish the job and then ascend the throne of England and restored the Northsea empire together with Denmark and Norway. How wouldn`t that change the history!

St. Olaf, Olav II Haraldsson or Olav digre (fat) the "fervent Christian", was spiritually speaking probably about as Christian as a famished badger.
The berserker who held the bridge, myth has it that he was over 2 meters tall and held it alone for an hour. Awesome coolness factor, but in reality it's likely that he didn't exist and it never happened. In fact, many battles over the years had a similar guy that held some vital position alone.
I'd have paid a lot more attention to my education on 1066 at school if this was played for us!

Epic video- where does the poem come from? Is it an original? Very evocative.
The quotes with the rhyming come from the Heimskringla, the Old Norse kings' sagas written by Snorri Sturlason in the 13th century, but derived from oral tradition and older more contemporary sources. Check the description for a link to the Gutenberg e-book!
