Sure it wasn't a technically perfect Italian aria, but it stands as one of the most beautiful performances I've ever heard in my entire life.

It worked, because she's an artist, not just a singer, or performer. She creates art through her vocals, and it's always beautiful!

To me, this is one of top 10 vocal performances of the last 50 years. In terms of how it moves me to tears every time I listen to it, it is my person number 1. Aretha Franklin's performance is simply astonishing. She did this without rehearsing with this orchestra and conductor, and on 20 minutes notice. She brought her own style into a piece of classical music and totally crushed it. Demolished it. Those people are lucky the roof didn't cave in after that ending. I think the video might have been edited. I heard that she received a 10 minute standing ovation. And I am sure the brought a lot of people to tears. I can't imagine anybody, even opera buffs, criticizing her performance. She interpreted it as her own and her own emotions came through - her artistry seems boundless. Rest in Peace Queen of Soul.

Aretha Franklin is arguably the most important female vocalist of the 20th century . Her influence transcends almost every genre and that performance is a good example of why. She is also more than just a pop culture moniker like " queen of soul ", she has had a profound impact on the US socio- political landscape as well and became the "voice" of the civil Rights movement , among other things .

She literally had 20 mins, maybe, to prepare. Luciano called in sick 10 minutes into the show and they asked if she’d be able to sing (since she did a rendition a day or so before). No rehearsal, a quick listen to some of his rehearsal footage, a few minutes of vocal warmups to test the monitors, and *boom* showtime. An incomparable professional.

The story goes, she sang it at a party the night before and when Pavarotti fell ill and backed out of the Grammy’s the next night they called on her. I can’t remember if she even had a chance to practice with the orchestra. Sting who announced her, didn’t even leave the stage. He just stood at the podium watching. It was pretty cool.

She did not have a rehearsal with the orchestra. She had a mic and monitor check of about 30 seconds, during the commercial. The whole first part of the song, she's just getting a feel for how the orchestra even sounds.

Everything is right except she performed the song two nights previous at a musical event. I forget the name of the event.
Edit: She didn't have time to practice with the orchestra. She had time to listen to his practice recordings and from there she determined that she could perform it in the same key as the orchestra was playing.

The last 30 seconds are just mind-blowing. There are many critics who blasted her for trying to sing OPERA, but I think they're missing the entire point of why this is great. She didn't go out there and try to be a Metropolitan Opera singer. She went out there to sing an aria in her soulful style. And she made it a musical event like no other. The fact that she had no time to rehearse and was stepping in for Pavorotti makes it even more amazing. It seems like they need to make a movie or documentary about this whole thing.

so Luciano got sick that night and said his doctors advised him he could not go on stage and sing. The grammys were live. the orchestra and choir were already tuned to luciano's key. during the commercial break one of the producers ran to Aretha's dressing room because he knew she sang the song at the music cares benefit a day or so before the show. there were only seven minutes to go and she said yes with no hesitation. with no time to prepare she had to sing it in his key. did she sing it perfectly, no but she made it her own and its one of the greatest moments in grammy history.

Thanks for your reactiion. I generally listen to only Christian/Worship music. My children and I were watching the Grammy's that year. Every so often, I will listen to this performanc again. Aretha brought something to Nessun Dorma that could never be replicated, her distinctive voice, style, and interpretation of song. It is stunning that she stepped in at the very last moment while the program was on. She and Pavarotti were friends and he knew she could sing it. Because the Grammy's was in progress, she was unable to rehearse the song with the orchestra Instead, she listened to a tape cassett recording of the orchestra's rehearsal the day before as her only preparation.
There is a richness, passion, and fluidity of her vocalizations across vocal registers that is stunning,, powerful, and dynamic.
After that performance, I had hoped that Aretha would do an album of Operatic works that she loved and invited Pavarotti as a guest on Nessun Dorma. Alas, it didn't take place. I would have loved it. It would have been a uniquely unmatched moment where Opera met soul.
Thanks again. This really is a reflection of the masterful god-given gift that Aretha was blessed to have.

Dude…here’s the kicker that proves she is one of the all time great virtuosos. She only had an hour to prepare. Pavorati was supposed to perform it for the 1998 Emmy Awards but canceled an hour before the performance due to illness.
Aretha was asked if she could do it. She listened to a track of Pavorati singing it, said “Yea I can do that” and an hour later she did…and boy did she.

Her vocals were not super strong here, react to her Nessun Dorma at the White House dinner 1999.., her 'top' voice was up and she sang it in a higher octave, power off the scale, her final belt is immense.

That's why it's good. That's like saying roast chicken is no ribeye. She sung it in a soul/pop way against that gorgeous orchestra. Like an evening gown with tennis shoes. It stimulates the ears and brain.
