I have seen this so many times and every time I am just covered in frisson shivers and get tears in my eyes at the crescendo.
Here I am, just about crying in gratitude that I get to hear her sing this. I don’t care what anyone says - the better the singer, the more they can affect you emotionally. All the opera singers I have heard sing it were all very good, even technically perfect possibly. But not one of them ever affected me the way Aretha does.

Exactly how I feel. This hits my soul. Tears fall when she hits that second nessus dorma in the lower octave

I was blown away with her prformance. She is the reason I love this song. I never thought I would like an opera song. Her talent had no limitis.

I LOVE your reaction to the G.O.A.T., Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin! Lady Luck, you say she was SOULFUL, but so are you, to enjoy and react to her performance as you did! I couldn't agree with your reaction more than I do! She's my favorite singer! I've been a fan of hers for many years(maybe her #1 fan ???), and I can't get enough of her!!! She's been the most versatile American recording artist, this country has ever had, thus far!!!

She gave much better and more powerful renditions in the years after, in a higher key with a much higher crescendo. I saw her sing it in Boston in 2002 and her voice rang out across the city, the crescendo was immense.

Everybody, I mean EVERYBODY was rooting for her! Nobody knew what to expect including the orchestra and the choir!
And, SHE DELIVERED big time! What absolute courage she had to do this!
I'll bet any amount of money Luciano Pavarotti was crying his eyes out listening to this. Before anyone disagrees with that understand Pavarotti spent a lot of his time in his latter years singing contemporary music with fellow artists and he enjoyed it very much.
Lady Luck, you've been on a musical roller coaster lately, what with Angelina and Aretha and God knows who else.
    See ya.

Here's what really happened concerning this performance; As stated by Sting in his introduction to this performance by Aretha. Aretha had two days prior performed her rendition of Nessum Dorma at Music Cares for Pavarotti. On this particular night of the Grammys, Pavarotti was supposed to perform Nessum Dorma and receive an award. Due to having the flu, he canceled very close to the time that he was supposed to go on stage. The producers of this Grammy show were aware that Aretha had performed Nessum Dorma for Mr. Pavarrotti two nights prior and so the producers asked Aretha around thirty minutes before the song was supposed to be performed to step in for Pavarotti. Aretha was able to listen to a cassette of Pavarotti's rehearsal with this orchestra and the two choirs that sang that night. Aretha informed the producers that she could and would step in for Pavarotti even after the Conductor and two choir directors refused to change the chords of the composition from Pavarotti's lower octaves to four octaves higher for Aretha. She went on stage and sang Nessum Dorma in the key arranged for Pavarrottti and ended up giving a history-making, dazzling performance seen by a worldwide audience of billions!

She is proof that opera and soul are natural allies. I can't decide if this is soul-plated opera or opera-plated soul. Aretha was as close to perfection as anyone could get.
