    Fun fact, on April Fool’s Day, before the video and song were released, they posted a ”We’re going to record the next song in French”-announcement on their social media pages. Everyone went ”Yeah … right!” 😁 And then they did it. 😁 Btw, I had listened to both versions before, but only seen the English video prior to your reaction, and I was like ”that charming smile towards the end is not in the English version, I would remember that!” So today, I played both videos side by side, and although they both continue a few scenes that are identical, the parts where he sings are totally different. I had always assumed he just walked the same route several times for the two versions, but no … very interesting, I never noticed that before. And I was right, there’s no smile or eye contact with the camera in the English version. It looks a little like a ”Told you I’d do this!”-smile for everyone who thought it was an April Fool’s joke. 😜

    I do not even know why it is so nice to see familiar places on a music video. This was filmed down town Helsinki where I walk almost every day. On the Sweet Escape video, the English language version of this song, there is a section filmed from a drone, and there I could pinpoint exactly where my apartment is.
    I agree with your Roxy Music comment.

    I love this song, and was so surprised when they released a song in my language! How unexpected of a Finnish band!
    His pronunciation is actually quite good too! And yes Mike, you got that right, it translates to "Leave with Me", and that wordplay you mentioned about "Avoir son coeur sur la main" being reworked into "J'ai mon coeur dans ta main" is spot on.
    Suggestions for more Potf: of course the Alexander Theatre Sessions, but also the Genelec Studio ones are really super good!

    Speaking of French music, I just remembered an artist I haven't thought about for many years! She's called Emilie Simon and she's covered many different musical styles over the years. Maybe 10-12 years ago she released an album that was a bit more electronic than she had done before, and around that time she released what she called the Bedford Avenue Sessions on RUclips where she performed some very different versions of some of her songs. Occasionally she reminds me a bit of Kate Bush. You really should check her out! I highly recommend "Rainbow" from that session: ruclips.net/video/tQzBlcPcD-Y/видео.html

    I still favor the official music video in English, but this is also lovely; the setting is the same. I was thinking the same thing as you mentioned about the guitars: '80s, something you might hear in an episode of Miami Vice.

    • @TimTheTuner
      @TimTheTuner 2 года назад

      I think the drum machine also reminds me of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," which I connect indelibly to Miami Vice, as well as that lovely guitar work. That jazz guitar does not appear in the original studio version found on their album "Ultraviolet." I have to listen to the music video version of "The Sweet Escape" to feel that the song is complete.

    I think Mike's level of French is about the same as mine - I understood most of the song, but from the subtitles, not from listening - for me it takes a while for my ears to acclimatise to the spoken language.
    A demain, tout les deux! (probably apelled wrong...)

    • @litogor
      @litogor 3 года назад +1

      As I said on an old G&M video, almost 50% of the words used in the English language come directly from the French language but it is true that they are often difficult to recognize because the pronunciations are so different in the two languages .... In the French language for example, the "U" (alone) has a sound that is only found in a few languages in the world and its equivalent is not found in English. .
      Many English speakers think that the French "E" is like the English "I" and this is a very common mistake ...
      French can become easy as long as you start with the right basics .... if this is not the case, you will lead to complications that can definitely stick to you .... lol

    • @Skraeling1000
      @Skraeling1000 3 года назад

      @@litogor yup, all thanks to the Norman invasion. French became the language of the ruling class while the commoners spoke English. Hence the landowners farmed beef and mutton while the poor raised chickens. And so on. As an aside, most swear words are English/Germanic in origin, not French.

    • @litogor
      @litogor 3 года назад

      @@Skraeling1000 Ok at the beginning the Normans but then especially the Plantagenets. The York and Lancaster Houses are in reality Plantagenets and therefore the famous war of the two roses is not a war between English but between powerful French families in England. The irony is that it is the Tudor House that will take advantage of this situation as it descended from another French royal family (Valois).
      At that time, we can estimate that these French families were like the "Mafia" and that the little English people were like "normal" and poor people .... ^^

    A little too "linear" for me (and yet I am French, which makes me more indulgent on this performance. Because it's not easy for a foreigner to sing in my language. I'm aware of it), I hoped for a musical "jump" at one point or another. But that didn't happen.
    For the rest, yes, the comparison with Roxy Music is well seen.
    Speaking of French song, I offer you two reactions which should normally please and surprising you.
    "Daniel Balavoine - Le chanteur ENGLISH SUBS" (1978). An incredible criticism of the world of show-bizz, of "overperstarisation" (a phenomenon currently amplified by social networks) with lyrics quite daring for the time.
    And then "Daniel Balavoine - Tous les cris les SOS (son HQ)".
    But be careful not to confuse "Tous les cris, les sos" with "Sos d'un terrien en détresse" covered by Dimash Kudaibergen for which you've already reacted. Even if the two songs were originally performed by Daniel Balavoine, they're indeed two different songs.
    For "Tous les cris, les sos" it's really important to find the translation of the lyrics to fully understand the power of this song from 1985 which musically was also at the forefront of electronic music through the use of samples environmental sounds to represent the ocean at the start of the song in an unprecedented way (no sample of the sea is used, but on the contrary the sounds of a train siren, car braking, etc.), its movement, the surf, the crash of waves on rocks etc.
    By the way, you'll also discover the incredible voice of this very committed singer who unfortunately disappeared too soon in a helicopter accident while following the "Paris-Dakar" race with the race organizer Thierry Sabine. This in order to install water wells in African villages and thus bring water to these villages through the charitable association created by Daniel Balavoine on this occasion.
