Thanks for a to the point video. I just did this today. Used a rubber coated waterproof toggle switch. I mounted his horizontally just below the Run/Start switch. Works perfectly. Thanks again!
My predator 3500 has a valve at the bottom of the carburetor bowl. You open it with a flat blade screwdriver. When you open it the fuel drains out of the carburetor bowl through a clear plastic hose that empties out through the bottom of the chassis. Elegant really. So when I’m getting ready to store my predator 3500, I just leave the switch in the off position which shuts off the gas, and I drain the carburetor bowl by turning the screw at the bottom of the carburetor bowl. A couple of turns, and the gas runs out of the carburetor bowl. I don’t know about the predator, but Johnson outboard used to warn you not to run the engine until the gas is all gone because it causes detonation, which is hard on the engine.

I have a leaky shut off valve, so looking for a video to get into that. Carb bowel keeps slowly refilling with the valve in the off position.
When shutting off just turn the dial until just before the off position. This closes the gas valve but keeps the ignition going so you can run the carb out of gas. It’s still good to drain the carb using the drain screw because there will still be some gas in there
I saw a video on that, but mine keep running the ignition off was about 1/4 from the off not enough to stop the gasoline flow and I tried it on one more and the same thing, I’m sure some might work,

Exactly right Kris. Today I was putting hours on my 3500 using a hot plate and did exactly as you did. I know it takes a while to stop so I left the hot plate on until I heard the engine stumble then shut the hot plate off. Engine spit and surged for about 30 seconds then quit. Total time took about 90 seconds. Same as you I had a little gas come out of the bowl. Thing is, 2 phillip screws and you have the panel off in about 15 seconds. What's so hard about that?? How much time is spent to modify? I can run it out of gas just as you did Kris but think it's better to take the panel off and easily drain it.
Yeah I’m not sure either why not just drain the carb bowl? I asked myself the same question. I don’t know if gas would remain in the carb jets and needle or not if you just drained but it seems like running it out of gas and draining would definitely clear all the gas out.
@@jerryjerome4727 Apparently I'm buying good gas here in Michigan because my mowers, etc. sit for 6 mo. and start just fine with no wasted money spent on Stabil. No big deal if mower, log spliter didn't start right up anyway. But when the power goes out I want my generators to start right up and keep the house warm and fridge cold so I'll get ALL the gas out. We both know that running it out of gas still leaves leaves a tablespoon of gas in the bowl so best to use the drain screw. Yes, after using drain screw the jets and pasages are empty and a drop of gas left just evaporates. I have 5 reg. generators from 1 to 9,000 watts but Love this quiet, gas sipping unit and will use it the most keeping the house warm/cool, fridge cool, T.V., lights and only using about 9 amps. People,,, this unit doesn't need any " Modifications. " Have a great day.
there is another video that shows him doing the “partial” off on main switch and it showed the fuel off but engine running….there is another manual fuel/carb hose drain that you can screw to drain a last little bit out of the line

Thanks Christopher I didn’t even see that, I just make there’s videos quick one shot no editing just to help people. I was playing around with 2 predators 3500 put the neutrals together and I got 240 volt did not check the hertz and didn’t put a load on it.

Different manufacture dates of the generator may require a slightly different configuration. I tried the recommended connection to the toggle switch and found it did not work on my generator. Gilbert gave me the idea of connecting the disconnected male 2 pin connector back to the toggle switch. I first disconnected the original connectors, then connected a new male 2 pin to the original female connector and connected the wires to the toggle switch poles as recommended, I found that the toggle did not work but the fuel shut off did work. Based on Gilberts comment, I then tried connecting an female 2 pin connector to the loose original connector and the wires to the switch, red to red, black to black, without success, then tried red to black, black to red, these configurations did not produce the desired results of fuel shut off and functional on and off toggle. Did more experimenting and found two black wires to one pole of the toggle switch and a red wire to the other toggle switch pole made the toggle functional and turned off the fuel to the carb in the stop position. I would appear, depending on when the generator was made, there is a difference in either the wiring or mother board that requires different configurations of pin & wire connections to the toggle switch for it to become operational. The original recommendation of disconnecting the original two connectors, then connecting a new female end to the disconnected male connector and connecting its wires to the toggle switch did not work on my generator. I purchased my generator in September 2019.
This description should apply to all Harbor Freight generators with the same fuel switch ignition switch combo, If you Disconnect The two pin connector coming from the control board to the fuel valve switch combo going to the back Plastic panel and With the two pin connector disconnected engine continues to run with the switch in the off position for about one minute until the carburetor is emptied, you know you have the proper connector disconnected, after that pin connector going to the board is in the open position, All you have to do is close it by connecting the 2 wires together and the engine will shut off this could be done with the toggle switch, if you have an ohm meter figure out which side the switch is closed most switch the close terminals are the ones were the Terminals are The opposite from the Toggle, Some people are getting confuse because when they disconnected to pin connector and try the engine with a gas valve in the factory switch in the off position the engine will continue to run that is normal because it has fuel in the carburetor and the ignition is still on and it will run for about one minute or a bit longer,
The Toggle switch is there just for quick shut downs if needed I always leave my toggle switch in the open position and just run the The fuel out of the carburetor By turning the combo switch to off, I never turn off the ignition and leave the fuel in the carburetor, So for me I normally never flip the toggle switch to the engine off position,
Some people have used two connectors and putting the switch in series ( in the middle Of the circuit )and now it works both ways with the gas valve off and with the toggle switch but that defeats the purpose of what we are trying to do, Having a empty carburetor every time The engine is shut down. I still think the best way is the toggle switch for emergency shut downs and turn off the fuel valve and let the engine suck the fuel out of the carburetor. Hope this helps
Michael is absolutely correct. Got my generator replaced October 2020 and you need a male AND female plug. Connect the "reds" of the new plugs together and run the "blacks" to each pole of a toggle and you are in business. Open circuit and off/run/start dial in off allows you to run gasoline out of the bowl or run on natural gas/propane. Closing the toggle circuit kills the ignition.

Does each wire from the male pin you purchase connect to one of the two connectors on the toggle switch ?
Does not matter with polarity as the switch only interrupts the power.

Hi, ok I installed a conversion kit, now how do I know if I’m using gas or natural gas ..I believe I installed everything right and I’m using natural gas when I start it but when I shut off my natural gas valve , the generator still stays on .. so besides the smell of gasoline because my nose is not that good ..how else would I tell ?
Your toggle works but I had to use both a female and male connector running to the toggle. Leaving one end hanging would not work.
Hi, Hopefully, you or someone else on here can help me. My Predator is about 4 yrs old and I definitely have put my use on the girl. Recently my gas shut off valve won't turn off. I need to run it until out of gas.
Great video...thanks! One question, you disconnected the 2 prong connector. Is the new male connector run through the toggle? What is done with the other male connector that you disconnected?
Just leave it there, it goes to the switch behind the gas valve and now you have a new toggle switch, and that one is no longer needed but no harm in being there and if the generator is still under warranty and you need to return it, just plug it back in and put the 12 volt reset back, that way nobody can void your warranty because you modified it, all back to original.
And my toggle will only work when the off/run/start switch is in the off position. Unit will run with toggle open, once closed it will shut off.
Yes that’s the way it works, I just leave my toggle switch in the on position which is normally open, when you’re done running the generator turn the run/start switch to the off position and let it run the gas out of the carburetor it will stay running for about one minute when the carburetor is empty it turns off the toggle is there only for emergency fast off,
So if you don't put the switch in it will run till out of fuel but it doesn't drain the battery or anything?
Correct, the battery is only for the starter motor, the stock battery only lasts about one year or less very low quality. I have a video on a replacement battery

Thanks!! I followed your first video on this and it has been working awesome with my propane conversion kit and ignition shut off. I just tried running the gen with gas and to my surprise, when i turned the gas to off, it just kept running. What am I missing? Thanks again!
I will run for about one minute or until the gas is out of the carburetor,
If you have the engine switch installed just turn it to off and the engine will stop running if you install it correctly.

Does this modification affect the low oil shutoff feature of this model in any way? I don't understand what the disconnected circuit does. Could there be other automatic shutoff features i.e. overload that could be affected?
Couldn't you just wire the switch into the circuit using two plugs male and female? It seems that closing the circuit is what stops the ignition. Am I missing something?
It’s will not affect the low oil switch,
The wire goes from the ignition coil to the factory switch and then to the engine ground, when you install the switch and is in the open position (off) the Circuit is not completed to ground the the engine will continue to run, close the switch (on) the Ground circuit is completed ignition is grounded and the engine will have no spark, the engine stops running, when installing a switch you have control to keep the ignition on and turn the gas off to run the gas out of the carburetor. This Grounding of the coil is the way most small engines turn off, even 2 stroke engines, some very old engines had a piece of metal the grounded the spark plug top to ground , Hope this helps

I can't see the wires you connected to toggle switch and to which connection please. When you disconnected in very beginning which wires from toggle go to which side.
It’s the wires that go to the firewall plastic back, it has the 2-pin connector in the center of the wires,
If you Disconnect the 2-pin connector the generator should start and when you turn the switch gas valve to off the engine should keep running, if it does you know it’s the right wires, the wires you put the toggle switch to is the ones that go to the front of the generator, not the one’s that goes to the fire wall

Not sure how well the gas shut off valves are made for these, mine in the off position will allow gas to bypass into the carburetor, drain the bowl, come back a while later drain the bowl again this will continue, mine will never shut off completely. Be aware of this, there may be others like mine
Mine is doing the leaky valve as well. Maybe dirt in the valve. Going to back flush it and see what happens.

I have problem with my generator 3500 so when you turn switch to start position then switch it to run position generator shut off do that mean shut of valve going out thanks
Normally that’s bad gas try turning it very slow maybe keep it halfway between start and run let it warm up a few seconds and see what happens. if you left it for a long time without running it and didn’t drain the carburetor it could be clogged up. That’s all I can help you without seeing it
There wasn’t any gasoline in tank but I did left it sitting there for maybe 2 month maybe I will clean it and see what it does know thanks for you help
Can you use this with a remote start stop?
I know there’s kits out there for that, if I needed a remote start I would have gotten the Westinghouse igen 4500

This mod doesnt work on mine. If you run the carb empty and then let it sit for a few hours and check the carb for gas there is a decent amount of fuel that comes out. The fuel shut off leaks even when closed

I just got a new predator 3500 and cannot find any single wire coming through the hole that you pointed to nor any wires with the 2 pin connector. All wiring is coming through a hole to the left in harnesses. Any suggestions as to which wire would be a kill switch wire.
Hi, there should be two small wires that are to the left of the gas valve stem, the wires should have a connector in the center, it’s the only wires the have a connector on it,
Disconnect the connector and the engine shouldn’t turn off when you turn off the switch and will run for 1 to 2 minutes until it uses the fuel in the carburetor and turn off, the wires for the toggle kill switch is the same wires, just need to plug the switch on the wires going to the panel and leave the other wires there doing nothing, hope this helps, haven’t done any of the new generator with the Fuel gauge but I can’t imagine that they changed the wiring set up.
Scratch that! Even warm it won't quit when choked. Guess I'm buying a toggle.
Why not just drain the bowl using the stock hardware provided. The drain is just below the carb bowl and requires just a screwdriver (flat). Funny thing about this generator is if the fuel valve selector is off, the bowl will be drained (by turning the drain screw CCW), HOWEVER if the fuel selector is in either RUN or START the same screw will drain the entire tank!
Thank you so much for that tip. I didn't even do the toggle switch. Just opened it up and disconnected that wire. Now I just run the fuel out then top off the tank with fuel/sta-bil mixture and its always good to go. Also, I wanted to share with you this awesome extension cord is found that gives you a total of 5 household outlets when needed.
