- Keith Whitley interview with Shelly Mangrum to promote his "Don't Close Your Eyes" album.
My eternal gratitude to Troy (waylonhoss) for setting me up with the clip... almost 17 years ago!
31 years tomorrow we lost a talented singer who should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame. We miss you everyday.
Agreed
Here in 2022 he finally is shocked me it just happened
Love to hear him sing he had such a beautiful voice! I got to meet him one time and I couldn't believe how nice he was off stage and he had a beautiful smile. RIP Keith Whitley 💔
Besides wanting to see my family and relatives in heaven, I’d like to see Keith as well. RIP sir and thank you for helping from beyond the grave.
Such a great interview and so sad he is gone...
R.I.P. Keith.
30 years ago today.
mat11trick he wuz a real nigga
wow, that's a long time ago. he was breaking big back then
When this man sings it like angels are speaking. Unbelievable artist and person.
Thanks for stopping by! I'm busy trying to repost all my old videos, incl. all my Keith Whitley videos. Stay tuned for more Keith vids!
MAMsMom97 Thank You for this post and for all of the others. I believe Keith had an ora about him like Elvis Presley. He was just so dang down to earth and loved his family. Could've been just because he was an Eastern Kentucky Good Old Boy!
😭 I'll miss you forever Keith!
I am from an island nation in the southern parts of the pacific rim. Keith Whitley's deep southern american accent could not be more opposite to mine. just love it. RIP sweet troubled man
Such an reflective bright singer, a national treasure leaving to soon... RIP Keith Whitley.
Wonder no more. He was a binge drinker. He would go for weeks without taking a drink. So, 90% of the time he was very articulate & focused. He came into alcohol during his years with Ralph Stanley. It's a widely known fact that, when one would come off stage, a lot of times people would hand you a drink, & it was available. A teenager, eventually, will give in to it if it's offered enough times, b/c it's hard not to when they see their idols doing it.
Keith should've already be in the HOF. Also, I wish someody could do a classic TNN station. i miss that.
So should the carpenters but does real justice exist ?
Well he’s In The CMHOF now.
Rest In Peace, so sad how he passed. One of the best voices in country, period
"Don't Close Your Eyes" was the first single & video off the album of the same name that Keith was there to promote. It wound up being his 1st #1 song & the 1st of 5 straight #1's for him & the #1 country song of 1988 in both Billboard & Radio & Records magazines.
Y'all like if y'all miss him
Thank you for watching! He was looking pretty good here, I must say!
He was the bob ross of country!! Love🥰
I remember hearing about Keith passing, I was a kid seems like yesterday.
So many songs we could have had from him
I remember you well...you were my hope, and voice when I was down, when a person had found the bottom, looking up and seeing the bottom,..you helped me through it..I wish you were here so I could tell you thanks, but i know your in a place of peace, and I hope you hear my address. Thanks for your songs, I miss you today my brother.
I’d so like to have a time machine to go back and never leave 1989!!!🥲🥲🥲
Yes, I'd say this was from July or August of that year. Thanks for stopping by!
I wish I could have bought a t shirt from one of your concerts, I dwell on the fact that I took for granted you would always be here, and I would have a chance to see you play, I feel your pain Lorrie, I still to this day miss it too..
I still miss you Keith ❤️
I was at work at newspaper office that I wrote for when the news came over the AP Wire Service
Was a big shock- I have all of Keith's lps on vinyl and some 45s
Great clip - thanks for posting this.
That curly mullet on point! 👌
His song "I Want My Rib Back" was covered by Gene Watson. He wrote "Hopelessly Yours" which was a hit for Suzy Bogguss. He wrote the Christmas song "Joseph & Mary's Boy" for Alabama, and "There's a New Kid in Town" was a hit for Michael Johnson and Alan Jackson. There are 4 examples right there. Thanks!
May 9th 1989 he Closed his eyes forever.
What a shame. He was our last real country singer. Rip my friend.
Best country singer. ever!,,
The real king will die with his battles. Keith done exactly that.
He seems happy here
Well said! I endorse that 100%!
Most don’t understand how hard one in Keith’s situation had to work and often not making enough to pay the bills. Got a manager taking 25% off the top and a booking agent taking 15. These artists often had to borrow money from their record labels to make up the shortfall.
As a friend of mine who was a successful and respected county music artist during Keith’s time put it: You’re just a well-fed workhorse.
Thanks for posting! I wonder who recorded the songs he wrote for other people, as he was saying - could you give me some examples? I'd be excited to here some! Thanks! Ralph.
If only Keith could’ve wrote that next album :(
No direspect for Keith but my search was for a video of Shelly, Boy did I have a crush on her!
He was too cool
Look at the drip 😎
Didn't George Strait do a cover of "There's a New Kid in Town" or am I mistaken?
Hi u a great singner
Mmmmm, don't EVEN get me started!!! :P
What did she mean, "Don't close your eyes?"
"I didn't want my short-term greed to get in the way of my long-term greed"
I love Keith Whitley and I could make a meal out of Shelley Mangrum.
They claim he committed suicide yet on the day he died he had made plans to write songs and do lunch and golf with a friend. It's odd that within an hour of his friend returning his blood alcohol level could reach .47 which equals 20 shots of 100 proof whiskey. Something doesn't add up.
Is this from 1988?
Yes.
How tall was Keith?
He was 5' 9", 155 pounds.
Keith's voice in this interview was pretty rough. I think he must have tied one on the night before. Pretty obvious to tell that as I'm no genius.
@James greene well since he drank every day i don't think it's a stretch to think she probably smelled it on his breath. It was a great interview nonetheless, very brutally honest about his sun-tan-bed-worshiping, height, & using other peoples songwriting because they were better than his. Very honest and righteous dude.
@James greene wow, had no idea...i bet his sober days were very welcomed by Shelly Mangrum and Lorrie and so many others. I had read where there was a stretch where he was drinking every day. i will pick up that book ... i know he went to the seedy side of Nashville at times.
Keith whitley and earl thomas Conley are dead so sad to hear they both died in Nashville Tennessee
keith whitley looks like toby keith
no, sir... Toby Keith looks like Keith Whitley...
No e dosent
Love his voice, but I didn't know a poodle could sing like this!
TheAnnsar I sure wouldn't mind having a head of hair like that.
OMG, he went to tanning beds, lol. you learn a lot from interviews. That is so bad for your skin. Were people more vain back then?
