Fantastic videos. My kids (7-11), really enjoy your humor. They watch you on their own tablets now. That's says a lot as you have reached a much younger generation and got their attention as you do many of us adults. Well done!
Thanks for the comments John. It's nice to know young folk are watching. I shall try and keep the bad words to a minimum in the future. There may be the odd one that slips out on occasion!!
Hi Barry, Please don't change a thing... they're well used to their humorous/cantankerous grandfather who springs to joy when they are around... he says he speaks pit-bull, and that's what they would sound like if they could talk. He's convinced them since quite young they are Labs that everybody loves to be around, especially pit-bulls They probably see a little of him in you and that's part of why they're taken with you.
I starter to see your videos today at 16:00 and so far didn't stop !!! Good job !!! C'mon Barry confess...Portugal is the most beautiful Country and warm you can get on your trips and don't forget the flags!!! Cheers m8.
Barry, Set up a Patreon page for your supporters to show there appreciation for all your hard work. Like you said editing and filming is a job. It is a lot of hard work. If folks wish to reward you and support your efforts. then give them the opportunity.
Thanks yet again for a great vlog. You have a knack for telling a story of normally boring existence being 'holed up' in a marina whilst waiting for favourable weather in such an entertaining manner that is truly uncanny. I thinks that's down to your positive attitude, it even comes across when you're moaning. I'm sorry now that I missed the opportunity to meet you when my boat was in Blagdons Yard during winter lay-up. We'd have found plenty to moan about...! Best of luck
As an old sea dog, you already know that lightning strikes wherever it pleases and nearby masts does not matter.. Although a direct hit is pretty destructive, you can minimize damage by installing grounding connectors that will provide discharge paths at or near the water surface (not below it). If you just unplug cords and let them hang, then a strike will arc jump from the cord to a nearby path to the water . Hope this helps. Jack, aka electricalpowerguy
I would think that one of the issues with installing grounding straps on a boat would be the fact that you are actually increasing the risk of a direct strike by making the path less resistive. Yes, it would redirect the current around the cabin by circumventing all the cabling running inside, but at what cost? Incidentally Barry, if you do decide to use ground straps (usually 4/0 AWG braided bare copper), be sure to run it on the OUTSIDE of the boat and all the way up the mast, that way your damage will be limited to some scorched deck and possibly some toasty sheets or halyards. Also, you will need a copper spike that extends above the top of the highest point on your mast to eliminate the mast as a conductor.
One last thing on the grounding of the lightning protection. The braided cable should be terminated on a copper plate (minimum 1 square foot) fastened to the outside of the hull in a place where it is normally in contact with the water. Your very first step however would be to check with the boat manufacturer to see if they have already installed some form of lightning mitigation on your particular model.
"NOT A BRAND MICROPHONE" ??? Sorry Barry can´t let you get away with that. It´s a SENNHEISER, the best of German engineering. No wonder it out performs that RODE. BTW, I´m a retired Pro Audio guy. Otherwise another great video from you, as usual. Thanks for your great output. Colin
Good vid Barry, recently just got here enjoyed some of your old videos...... good work! I appreciate your work on the editing I know it take time & effort. Keep on sailing. Cheers
howdy Barry - keep sailing South when you get to Cape Town - turn left and sail to Richards Bay. pop in and we'll buy you a beer and take you to the game reserve. fair winds to you.
Hi Barry first time I see your video collection living in South Africa I wish I was in your place but being 70 can only keep on dreaming please keep up the nice work.
Hi Barry, Just came across your channel recently. Really enjoy your so down to earth humour. You seem very comfortable talking to the camera. I suppose when your on your own ,it helps keep you sane lol. Do you enjoy being on your own, No wife in the picture ? I suppose you've been told many times that you look like Tom Hanks. Anyhow enjoying the videos and I follow most of the other ones. Great work. Fair winds Sir. Greetings from Stockholm in Sweden. And no not Swedish, from Jersey in the Channel islands originally.
Nice to see your editing setup, and yes I have the same problem - STARTING is the hardest thing! Interesting that you use Final Cut, I only have version 7 and found it difficult to get to grips with, so went back to iMovie, which I find relatively simple, although it obv does lack some advanced features. Gotta love those dolphins 😄👍🏼
I really enjoy your videos, always find them interesting and we have a similar sense of humour. Why don't you do the 'dhobying' as you go, each day, while on passage? It's the easiest way to stay fresh!
Really been enjoying your videos. Us old guys need to stick together. Why are you not going into the med? Seems to be the season for it. Stay in the Med till late September or October. then cross to the carib.
Thought Id leave the Med for when Im too old to do more! Doing the hard part first. The videos run behind time and as you can see Im heading south then west. If you check Facebook 'Adventures of an old Seadog' it has 'realtime' updates. Cheers for your support.
Smart move disconnecting your electronics. I've seen folks hang heavy gauge jumper cables from their chain plates into the water during lightning storms. Would that really do any good if your mast gets hit or does it just make them feel better?
recent subscriber, so forgive me if you've already answered questions like "What you do for fresh water (other than your tanks), boat size, reasons for different sails

sure you've got it figured out by now but I used to be a DJ and there's a lot of different pick up points on the microphone front, side, top, bottom depending on the brand and also how far you hold your mouth away and also how much GAIN you have the microphone turned on to...... i'm pretty sure you have that all figured out though because audio is extremely good on all your vlogs..... One more thing the injury to your face did you fall on your face you said you were drinking possum I bet if you did you looked good even then...///
Aaaah...ok.. did not know there was that big of a gap. Must be wierd answering questions for something that happened a year ago. Thanks...happy sailing.
Nomad He is in a bluewater boat, just a small one. For every foot in size you go up, a boat gets exponentially more complicated, expensive, and difficult to sail and maintain.

Loving your work Barry, I started at episode 1 and am now going on to 47, looking forward to your sail to the Canaries. I'm so jealous. 👍
Shadow has a very attractive interior.
Thanks for cutting the shower scene Just In Time!
Thought I'd spare you the nasty bits!!
LOL
I bet you can really appreciate just being able to come in nice and slow taking your time without a gale blowing in etc. etc. etc.
Always a pleasure Barry! (SY SeaWitch)

Great Video, very informative regarding weather forecasting on a boat. Any more Passage planning tips? Keep Posting please, Makes my day .
Regarding passage weather planning, I normally ask those who know more than me!! Also local info is always good if not totally accurate.
Barry Perrins . Good advice regarding local information on weather. Fair winds. safe sailing.

I have a lot of plastic 5ltr containers that I refill at marinas. Am currently re making the system I have onboard. Cheers!
this is when you need a bimini attached to the spray shield
👍
🍺🍕
Always enjoy your videos. What do they charge per day (for a slip) at the Portimão Marina, just curious?
Cant remember but 35 Euro sounds about right. Not cheap. Anchor in the Lagoon at Alvor it's free. Barry.
Thanks Barry for your reply. Fair winds.
often the low sensitivity mic does a better job than a 'quality' mic (built for a sound studio)
Not to be intrusive, but as a prospective future solo cruiser like yourself I was wondering how you fund a life like yours
Very shocked that the fish didn't have anything to say to you. Or was that cut out?
Unfortunately on this episode I had to leave out lots of drunk and mad rambling bits!!!
Time to head south into thee Unknown now eh.??

I won a lot of money and want to buy a boat but I don’t know how to sail
15 October 2016?????
The videos run behind time. They take a longtime to film and make. For 'realtime' news checkout Aventures of an old Seadog on Facebook.

I stay away from Facebook. I will just follow your past😎
So if you get a boat that is too small, you get no laundry, water maker, shower? Or is it not possible to single hand a blue water boat?
Nomad
He is in a bluewater boat, just a small one. For every foot in size you go up, a boat gets exponentially more complicated, expensive, and difficult to sail and maintain.
That’s not Spain
you need too spray some deodorant in you boat it well not smell so bad Barry .
Wasn't that song in the top ten a while back? "There's underwear on my boom." 😁
Always a pleasure Barry! (SY SeaWitch)
