The picture of her sister displayed in the background is so sweet. It's endearing to see.

: When i see a young pupil, my first question is “can you live without music?” If you can live without music,Thank the lord and goodbye!

Although her opinion "you only do music if you can't live with music" may be a more extremely opinion, what she said later was simply brilliant - if her extreme opinion intimated someone, as long that someone truly loves music they'll find another teacher to continue study music. Those that stopped learning because of one scary teacher or those that need constant encouragement to study - would never amount to anything anyways (unless they change their mindset).

    Quincy brought me here.

Quincy was the one who exposed these five qualities to Nadia during his training : "Sensation, feeling, belief"... He was the one to mention them to her. He mentions that annecdocte in his book and she said she wholeheartedly subcribed to this conception... And here, I am amazed to see in his video that she kept these principles for herself in her further teaching. Her pupils brought things to her too!

Emile, pouvez-vous indiquer de quelle vidéo provient cette interview? Je ne crois pas que cela fasse partie du documentaire de Monsaingeon. Merci d'avance!

“My only fear is that I didn’t encourage enough young people...If someone needs encouragement they’ll never do anything”
    Got it

You got it wrong: she thinks she might have encouraged too many people!

Thats certainly a reading I hadn’t considered. She says: “When you’re teaching you’re always concerned, Have I not encouraged too many people?”
I took it as “Are there too many people I have not encouraged?”, but you’re saying she means “Aren’t there too many people I have encouraged?” So that, essentially the “not” could be taken out and the same thing would be conveyed by “Have I encouraged too many people?”
I’m blown away by this possibility of reading it!
Is it a French way of expressing things or something?

Mlle. Boulanger actually said she was concerned that she had encouraged too many people.

Actually she was concerned that she had *not* encouraged too many people, listen more closely.
Jk, but check the replies before yours

@@nathanialblower9216 I'm delighted with this interest in Nadia Boulanger. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but I was in the room when she said this. I studied with Mllel Boulanger from 1975-1978, and was present when this documentary was made. She was definitely concerned that she had encouraged too many people. She continues that if someone really wants to be a composer, it does not matter who discourages them, even herself...
