Matt Biondi was able to swim the 100m freestyle in 48.42 and regularly sub 49sec in the late '80s. Can you image him swimming today, taking advantage of improved training, technique, diving and turning, better pools and swimsuit? Scary.
my favorite parts were the legs to together, the non DQ false start, and the the flutter kick off the first turn. its amazing how much technique has changed in 20 years.
In my opinion he is the greatest 100 freestyler ever, even better than Popov. His relay split of 47.66 in the mid 80's lasted for nearly twenty years as the fastest relay split of all time, and it was in a brief and without a cap.
Yeah, it would be insane. In my opinion the four greatest 100 freestylers of all time are Biondi, Popov, Magnussen and Adrian. Even though James and Nathan are new on the scene, they would be close to Popov and Biondi in their time. VDH is a close 5th for me.
It's interesting to see how swimming has changed and developed over the past 20 or so years. The starts, the suits(as in now we swim in high tech performance suits compared to what seemed like regular speedos in the video). Everything seems to have developed
In my opinion VDH is in 2nd position with Popov. Magnussen and (especially) Adrian still have to show us they deserve to be in the top ten. Unless you are talking about the last 30 years only.
Popov is the obvious choice, but I'm not entirely convinced he could beat Magnussen or Adrian today. If he went 48.2 in briefs in 94, im quite sure he could go 47.5 in the suits and pools they have today. Adrian is going to become (I think) the great US sprinter in history, especially at the rate he's going. To go from a 48.1 in June to a 47.5 in August is just unbelievable. And Magnussen's 47.1 is on another level altogether.
Agreed; '88-'92 was the last hurrah for the traditional "speedo" style. Nowadays they wear full body $400 suits and if a dude wears the old school speedos they are considered either a diver, a cheapskate, or a weirdo, take your pick.
@Rac1ng4Live Now they are. Back then, you were allowed up to two false starts per heat before DQing. Often, people would false start on purpose to try and rattle other swimmers.
This was the first Olympics the dolphin kick was used, and FINA had to regulate it. Swimmers, especially breast strokers, try to stretch the limits as to what they can get away with.
Pieter Van Hoogenband is 2nd to Cesar Cielo in my opinion. Or maybe James Mgnussen. Also Ian Thorpe had a sub 48.00. Same with Hoogenband. Cesar Cielo is definitely the best in a supersuit. sub 47.00! :0 !!!!!!!!!
This event is about 22 years ago, but the quality of this video is very good, quite clean.

Makes you wonder how he would have done against swimmers like Phelps and Lochte.

back in a day they were real Speedos!!
And every sprint had a false start. And swimmers supposedly 'hydroplaned" on the surface of the water.
