Hamilton Beach 2 Way Flex Brew Coffee Maker Review

- Hi Guys, today I’m reviewing the Hamilton Beach 2-Way FlexBrew Coffeemaker. LINK TO Coffeemaker: amzn.to/1H6MH6v.
It allows you to brew a pot of coffee or a single serving.
It’s not too big or small - 13.5 inches tall and 9.25 inches wide. The coffee maker comes with a glass carafe that holds up to 12 cups. A brew basket - you can use a paper filter or permanent filter in the basket before brewing. Removable single-serve pack holder - when you brew a single cup, put your coffee pack in here and hole will be punched in the bottom of the pack before brewing. Yes, it is compatible with K cups. Brew using a maximum of 10 ounces of water. The single-serve brew basket is for brewing a single cup with ground coffee or a soft pod. This holds a maximum of 3 tablespoons. Brew using a maximum of 14 ounces of water. This is the multilevel cup rest. Leave this here if you’re using a travel mug. Flip this up if you’re using a shorter mug. Make sure it snaps into place.
There’s the brew selector which you can dial to the right for single-serve or left for a pot of coffee. The display has brew options. You can choose single-serve pack or ground mode when brewing a single cup. You can choose regular or bold when using the carafe side.
The program button lets you set a time for the unit to automatically brew coffee on the carafe side. You cannot program the single serve side.
The water window clearly shows how much water is in the reservoir. There is cord stuff storage in the back of the unit. It’s exactly what it sounds like, you stuff the cord into the slot.
First I’ll brew a single cup. Turn the dial to single-serve. Press brew options to select Gound mode. Remove the brew basket handle. To remove the single-serve pack holder, grap the cup, slide back and lift. Add ground coffee to your basket, put it in the handle and slide it back. If you’re using a pack, press the handle down which punctures the foil lid on the pack. Fill the reservoir with a maximum of 14 ounces of water. Place your mug on the rest. Press the on butter and a blue light will come on. The warming plate is hot even when you’re brewing the single-serve. When it’s finished brewing, the coffee maker will automatically shut off and the light will go off. You will also hear 3 beeps. The coffee is hot and tastes like a decent cup of coffee. It took about 3 minutes to make 8 ounces.
Next I’ll brew 4 cups of coffee using the carafe. I’m using a paper filter and ground coffee. Pouring 4 cups of water into the reservoir. Place the carafe on the warming plate. Turn the dial to carafe and press brew. Regular is the default setting. Choose bold if you want a stronger cup of coffee. Press On to brew. The bold mode will take longer to brew. The coffee maker remembers the last brew option you selected so remember to change the mode when you brew next time if you need to. If you unplug the coffee maker, it will default to regular mode. Only one side will brew at a time. The coffee was done in 6 minutes.
All parts except carafe are top-rack dishwasher safe. The manual says not to use “sani” setting when using the dishwasher because it could cause damage. I generally wash parts in warm, soapy water because it’s easier and you don’t have to worry about any parts melting or bending due to the heat of the dishwasher. Once a month, use ½ cup vinegar and ½ cup water to clean the carafe side. Run 2 or 3 cycles of plain water afterwards.
So, there’s a lot going on in this coffee maker. You do have to remember to choose the right side and brew. I know it’s a simple thing, but when you’re half awake in the morning, I can see somebody forgetting to choose the correct side and plain water comes out on the opposite side. If you’re always in a rush and want a super fast cup of coffee, then this is not going to work for you. But if you’re looking for a standard coffee maker that has the flexibility of brewing 12 cups or just one cup, then this is a pretty good option. The price is reasonable at around $90.

Thought my unit was broken. Searched and found your video. Thank you. Its not a Keurig, and nor does it brew at the same speed and volume.
I filled the tank past the single cup level. installed K cup. Brewed 24 Ounces LOL!!!!!
fast forward, Single serve, single 10 ounces, no problem. Ill stick to the carafe side. BUT!!!! my coffeemaker is not Broken. Thanks again.

At 5 years with this great coffee brewer. All works great and their only failure for this year of development was the coffee pot plate gets really hot when using the kcup side. Weird. All is working great. Note ive always used filtered water. I love this coffee maker.
The coffee pot side of this is good, although it does get too hot. Also, the unit is very light, so putting the pot back on the heater or putting the single serving piece back in makes the entire unit move [always use two hands with this thing!] But the single serving side delivers a horrible user experience.
A few highlights:
The K-Cup style receiver in this device doesn't poke a hole in the bottom, and instead mangles the bottom and side of the K-Cup. That's not the worst of it.
You are limited to 10oz for a K-Cup, or 14oz for their special golden filter for single servings. In either case, you must pour in the PRECISE AMOUNT of water for this to work. If you mess up, then be ready to pay the price and waste time. You have to switch it from single serve mode to the pot mode. Then you have to brew all of it into the pot and completely empty the water storage before you can try again. The water doesn't just go out, but has to heat up and go through the motions. As you wait for this ponderous process to complete, you dread not having decided to make a full pot. Then, you try again, and the end result is what looks like significantly less than 10oz of coffee in your cup.
I bought mine over the weekend, and will be returning it next weekend.

Thanks for the very detailed review. I love this coffee maker until just now. I've used the single serve basket to brew a cup of coffee a few times. I found fine coffee grinds in my coffee so I stick to brewing a whole pot from then on. Coffee tasted great! Recently, I tried it with K-cup pods. To my surprise, the K-cup pod's shape was totally altered after brewing!!! The flat bottom tall cylindrical shape became short and half spherical! Does anyone have the same experience with their Flexbrew machine? I'm afraid I'm consuming melted plastic in my coffee!

Hi, really good review of the product as you covered most of the features and a warning on the warming plate getting hot regardless of whether you brew a pot or a single cup. The one thing I wish you could have shown a little bit was the water level indicators on the side of the unit for the reservoir.
I do have a few questions, on your demo for the single serve option. you brewed 8oz of coffee using coffee grounds (and the adapter for it), and that took 3 minutes. Have you ever brewed 14oz and timed it? Have you ever brewed using a K-cup and how long did that take with the max 10oz of water?
Lastly, Would it be "safe" to assume that since there is a max amount of water that the machine would accept to brew a single cup of coffee, that it would be (almost) impossible to accidentally brew a single cup if you had filled the reservoir with several cups of water while intending to brew a pot of coffee? I can see someone making this kind of mistake.

I have this and do love it. My problem now after two years is that it brews slowly on the carafe side 🙁 and the top has warped so it does not close tightly. Any suggestions?
I have one of these for about two year..the only think I don't like about the single cup, I have a hard time putting the insert back into the single serve pack holder..I took it out twice to use my regular ground coffee with the brew basket, and then had such a hard time putting the single serve pack holder back in. It doesn't seem to pop right back in

Got this coffee maker for Christmas. Picked up a box of K Cups to use. On the fourth cup the handle would no longer stay down when pressed. It seems that the locking mechanism on the press down handle fell off. Now you have to hold the handle down manually to brew a coffee. Too bad. It was just what I wanted. However, I will return it to the store.

Water unit measure is on wrong side, should be on left side. Could be issue do to counter space and placement, Cool unit if it was other side...

Where is the power button to turn it on, I see that's its probably the brew button but obviously don't you have to turn it on before you start to brew?

Made great coffee but now the carafe side is not working. Cleaned as they said too, still not working single serve still works. I got thi for a birthday gift in June here it is October and not working smh
I have this model and right before the warranty expired, I called CS to complain of an issue with the single serve side leaking water everywhere. They troubleshot the issue with me on the phone but NEVER made record of my call. Now, 3 months later, warranty expired, same issue and no record of my initial call. If they do not replace this at no charge - I'm going to create such havoc and complain until I reach the end of the line. I don't give up easily and for what we paid for this - we shouldn't need to replace in a little over a year later. Does anyone know how to read the serial number? I'm not 100% sure it's out of warranty but I'm thinking so.
how is the machine doing now after some time? still working well or do u see any differences?
Iv personally had this for 2 years maybe a little less .. every day use (i fill my thermos about 4 times a day using the reusable basket for ground coffy and fill the main pot every morning) ... still running like new .... for 3 people in one house its pretty good .. oh ya .. they also fill their thermos multiple times so its seeing alot of action

It lasted me a year and 2 months, as soon as warranty ran out, it broke. Called Hamilton Beach and all they said was they could sell me one at 40% discount plus 12 shipping and state sales tax. No thanks, I guess I'll stick with the cheapest one I can find if it's only going to last a year.
My K Cup side will not filter all the water back to my cup. I have tired cleaning and using vinegar. Can someone please help. Thank you.

My single cup side stopped working. It only sucks air and doesn't collect the water. I fill it but the water doesn't show on the measurement
I am having the same problem. Had it about six months. Its garbage.
The video didn't show how to make a cup of coffee using a k cup. You talked about it, but didn't demonstrate how to puncture the k cup after sliding the holder into the machine. I bought a used one of these machines and it didn't come with instructions. I watched this video to specifically see how to brew using a k cup.
can you make tea and coffee or just coffee because I try to make tea with it didnt go will it didnt taste good it was bad
Kelly Love Hearts I do, I just put the tea bags in the carafe instead of where the coffee grinds would go. and I also use the single side for just hot water. I put the cup underneath it and take out holder and it shoots out hot water for my tea.
Have been using for two years now. Heat has warped the plastic cover for the basket so bad that it no longer closes. The warming plate has badly rusted.

I had the same problem, I found several trouble shooting RUclips videos and cleaned the k cup nozzle and it works again.
i find the brew takes much longer than a Keurig for a single serve...has anyone else found this?

Mine the lid has warped from the heat of brewing! It's annoying and looks terrible!

FWIW (I know this is an old comment), it's compatible with the Keurig 2.0 cup types. I had one package of older K cups which I passed on to another family coffee drinker, because she has an older Keurig.
I need help i just got this and everyone i try to brew a single cup it says error Im doing everything right but i don't know what's happening
sandygodly21 Guajardo Hi Sandy, try turning off and unplugging for a few minutes. Turn it on and if it is still a problem, call Hamilton Beach customer support.
when you get the 'ERR' message it means the water level in the reservoir is above the single cup max line. There is a small water level detector inside the water tank that will throw this particular message. It can be held down with say a wooden dowel, but probably not a wise idea as the machine will continue to brew until the water is completely gone.
I used a small mug, filled it 75% with water, poured the water in the tank, put the grounds in the trap thingie a dozen times. Today, I get an ERR showing and I have no idea how to get things working again.
+Doug Koehler Hi Doug, usually the Err comes on when there is too much water added. Remove the coffee grounds, I would turn the dial to carafe, put the carafe on the base, press the button to brew so it empties out the water. Then turn the dial to single serve, choose "ground" from the brew options, put water in the reservoir, coffee grounds in the basket and brew. Hope that works. Otherwise, contact Hamilton Beach support. Please subscribe if you haven't already :)

Bought one of these today, It's pathetic that you have to measure out water. The reservoir should hold any amount of water..
having a problem getting the piece to fit into the kcup holder
I'm having the same problem..getting so frustrated trying to put it back in..I give up..there should be a video showing how to put it back in
I figured it out, look closely how it's done that one piece that doesn't seem to fit, is probably where your problem is..but it does fit just do it slowly with the video, I don't know if that is the one I watched but I checked them all out & found one that is straight forward...good luck it works

Am I the only onw who didn't have a nightmare of an experience with this model? It may be because its the first coffee machine my family bought so we dont have much experience with them.
I got mine many years ago on clearance and l/we have seriously enjoyed it! I sure got my money’s worth out of it 😁 hoping for a few more years use 🤞

+Dave Jordan If you do no do what is considered standard coffee maker 101, with running several cup of water through first, you risk a plastic taste with any coffee maker. I using vinegar and water 50/50 solution or sometimes pure vinegar and rinse at least 3 times with pure water. If I see any residue come out, I let the vinegar solution sit for 30 minutes, and repeat with several rinses of water, and this works very well.
Carolyn Braynt that does not work on mine and most others for this model. I ran about 20 cycles of a vinegar/water solution and another 20 cycles of just water. The plastic taste never went away. A great design but I don't care much for plastic tasting coffee.
I hate this coffee maker with a passion.
This is a terrible coffee maker. It brews coffee that tastes heavily like plastic. And it seems everyone who hasn't normal tastes has complained about this. Do not buy this maker! It's a great design idea but who wants plastic tasting coffee?

+David Fowler Jr Hi, after you plug in the machine and choose your settings, press the brew button (I/O On/Off button). When it's finished brewing, press the brew button to turn off the unit. There is no other on/off button. Hope that helps :)
