Getting a little bored with some of the trendy you tubers that show techniques that more than twice as old as they are and present them as their invention. Thanks so much Sue and everyone who liked this comment. Are you thinking of the same RUclipsr as I am when you talk about these techniques? I was taught to use a soft pencil to cover the back of a picture I wanted to copy so that I could use it like carbon paper to trace from when I was hmmmmmmm about five years old in 1958???? Oh well, I don’t have a problem with these old ideas being shared - and indeed I put up a short video on this subject about three years ago - but at least people might think about not behaving as if they invented it themself!!! LOL!
First, I have to second your comments regarding Diane. I’ve really enjoyed her and learning. It IS refreshing!! Oh my word…. I was just scanning the first couple of comments (I rarely do) and was NOT expecting the part about younger generation and the techniques!! You made me laugh out loud and laughter is always a good thing! Thank you! I’m always a little “taken back “ at some who feel their lightfast testing is better than the company who has been doing this before they were born. No one has ever stated what process the companies use either….(doubt they know) but they are convinced and have convinced many other people that they can call MAJOR brands liars because they saw some fading after taping their swatches in a window for a year!!! Are you kidding me?? Doesn’t everyone know to keep your pictures (any medium) out of direct sunlight and watercolor artists I know always frame using UV glass…. It’s absolutely beyond belief to me…but I’m a few months away from 65 and I have loved art and been painting with acrylic and oils since my 20’s. Granted, I’m fairly new to watercolor but I think I will go with what the company says regarding the paint 😂 I knew more from just reading watercolor books and practicing (I don’t have access to lessons) than several people who are considered “experts “!

Thanks for that idea of cutting the old tubes. Inherited a bunch of very old tubes and as a beginner didn’t think I could use them when they were dried up so I threw them away! 😫
I inherited dried paints in the tube. Being the tightwad I am, I cut the tube open and put them in a palette. They don't stick to it, so that's frustrating, but at least I had some professional grade paints I didn't have before.

Diane, I love the start of this video seeing beautiful you in your cozy studio and then seeing sleeping beauty with the chew ball resting alongside.This painting speaks Autumn to me and all of its vibrant glory. Absolutely stunning! Oh...I was at the market today and saw they are already selling pumpkins, can you believe that? Here in California we're fortunate to have access to a lot of produce but even I wasn't expecting pumpkins in August! Maybe they'll start selling Christmas trees in September....haha... Went to visit my (almost 90 year old) mother today and she has so many of your paintings hanging in her home. They are all from the tutorials that you provided and we did together. On each of these paintings, I worked on the left side of the watercolor paper and she worked on the right. On all of the paintings we signed our initials on the bottom sides respectively and they are proudly displayed throughout the rooms in her home. What a treasure, and all because of you!
I love that you find specific memories in your paint colors! I often find memories in what might seem to others innocuous places. But they’re my memories and they matter to me, wherever they are found. Also we are always evolving, aren’t we? Can’t stagnate to please others

I love those dishes. I bought myself some and I put little labels on the bottoms with the paint names. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what paints are in each dish. 😂
I'm in the UK. I've been looking for some small dishes in the kitchen sections as I saw someone else's video suggesting ceramic is a lot cheaper in kitchen section (rather than buying purpose made artist ceramic bowls). Although i'm finding that there doesn't seem to be a huge selection or options around at the moment! Any ideas, anyone?
@@biancathomas7934 i trawl the charity shops. A lot of people give them the small china or glass pots that desserts are sold in. My shop had them for 25p each

Hi Diane, I absolutely love that you break all the rules and do what comes to your mind...and it always turns out so unique and beautiful. This is the kind of painting that makes me feel relaxed. I was doing so good on my own and then when I started to follow the so-called correct techniques, I started to get frustrated and thought, go back to the way that makes me happy, and watching you is so refreshing.
I enjoy watching you use tube paints primarily is because I have them and like to use them up. I like the colors better too. Your video always complete with your full painting which is greatly appreciated for someone like me wants to follow, unlike other artists they either show the painting in a second or tilted for no good reason. It may be easy for newbies to start but to continuing show something takes very hard work and the fact that art is so other worldly of inspiration and heart adds to it all! Hubby set me up so I can run my RUclips on the tv which I so enjoy to do laundry while I watch and such. Can’t comment until I’m on an actual computer though. Since COVID I’m at a loss for doing my favorite pastimes. I still make handmade cards for friends when I need to, but RUclips watching is my only real hobby! I think life goes through ebb and flow times, but I really appreciate painting videos which are so relaxing and fun!!!
With any hobby I have "dabbled" in, whether it be watercolor, stained glass, mosaics, vintage jewelry art or crocheting, I have found that the joy of accumulating the "junk" is as fun as the art of making. I know the search for the next new item gets in the way of my creating. I am your age and don't know if I can stop at this point! My older sisters have the same challenge. I think I need to join a support group ... or just watch more of your videos! Love them!!!
I think every artist has their own favourite paint. I have mostly M. Graham. They are honey based but I have never seen mould. I think the trick is not filling you palette too full. I have Kuratake 36 which I use occasionally for fun. Some Daniel Smith half-pan palette which I use now and then. I had lots of others and gave it all away. I think anyone who criticizes an artist for their paint or materials probably don’t have much talent and tries to make others look bad to fulfill some false sense of importance. I watch a lot of tutorials and it seems to me they all artists have their own favourite materials. From your channel I’ve learned to try new things and not worry about affordability. I know a man who told me his only tools for school as a child was a stick in the sand. He is an amazing person, talented and loved by all, and I am very proud to know such a person. You just keep on doing what you do, and don’t let well meaning trolls bother you. You don’t need them in your life. Love you!

You're good medicine Diane. Googled Daler Rowney and it looks like they're still made in England. I started out with a little Cotman palette before moving on to Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton. But I'm also very fond of van Gogh student grade paints which are better than Cotman, imho. Lately I'm very sensitive to the cost of a tube of paint. Not that I can't "afford" it, but it seems greedy and offensive to me. At $4 a tube, I can have lots of fun with the van Gogh paints. Completely understand how possessions become infused with emotions; I often lovingly stroke the dashboard of my beloved old car. If Kuretake paints make you happy, then by all means use them!! 😄Love those ceramic pitchers on your table, love all the animal sounds in the background, and thank you so much for not playing music while you paint.
OMG, I can totally relate to what you have said. Last night I was looking for something in my studio I found a W&N watercolor tin, my father had gifted to me when I was a teen. The in is now empty but, was once filled with lovely little tubes of artist’s watercolors. We do have certain memories connected to our art materials. I’ve saved that tin for over fifty years! I had not used watercolors until after the birth of our third son. It had proven too difficult to paint with my oil pants and my acrylics would dry up while trying to settle the inevitable squabbles between three little boys. That’s when I discovered the unused W&N watercolor tin given by father. I fell in love instantly with watercolors that day and I have never looked back!

I can relate to keeping art things for the memories Diane. My aunt (who died almost ten years ago) had lots of art supplies which I hated the idea of being thrown away when she died, so I brought some home. To be honest most I haven’t used either, but every time I go to sort them out all the memories of her come flooding back and everything goes back in the box. After a break of about eighteen years I have started watercolour painting again since my husband suddenly died last year. I don’t have a studio of even a proper space to work yet, but will have a small area sorted out by the weekend (At the moment I just paint once a week for a couple of hours at an art group I have recently joined. Thank you so much for sharing you as you paint. You are a great inspiration me and have made me determined to paint again. I spent too many years not doing things that make me smile and your honestly helps me understand me in some strange way. X
I really appreciated learning about the Kuretake paints from you. I would love to try your system, but my workspace is a 3x3 card table, so I find it is easier to work exclusively from pans. The Kuretake pans are a wonderful size, so much easier to work with than the more common tiny half pans.
When I was young I worked for Rowney. I was office staff and the factory was on the same site. We were not allowed in for safety reasons but I was asked to take a parcel down one day. Fascinating to see all the tubes being filled. They are still on the same site but Daler Rowney now
@@DianeAntoneStudio they had some beautiful original paintings on the walls. The one in my office was by a very famous lady painter but unfortunately I cannot remember her name now. It was lovely to look up from my typewriter (way before word processors and computers) and see this gorgeous piece of art. Also lots of interesting art books that I used to read in my lunch hour. Unfortunately due to a change of circumstances at the company my role disappeared, which was a real shame. I often wonder if the picture is still in situ 😁
To get your paint out and save your hands, invest in a tube wringer. You can either buy as a key or small wringer. They are cheap, reusable and invaluable around the home in general (toothpaste! Etc) Much kinder on the hands.

I’m not an artist, so using Daniel Smith for a personal card means nothing to the person I send it to. I Enjoy buying paints that you suggest that are reasonable, and useable. I get anxiety using expensive stuff. I appreciate that you promote fun art without a massive price tag. And I love Kuretaki, already the right color for the job.
The tour through your paint box was fun! I think we all have old tubes laying around for one reason or another. I have some old Dale Rowley acrylics that are in a similar state. 😂 Perhaps... It may be really cathartic for you to do a painting using only tubes which are nearly empty. Then as you squeeze the end of them you can toss them in the trash along with any blocks they've put in you, and declare your victory with something beautiful! At least however, watercolors come in really tiny tubes, so they take up less space. 🤣😂

I love the idea you have of using those little paint pots. So easy to select your palette ahead of time and eliminate the extra colours you might have in a complete palette set up. This might encourage trying different colour mixes having chosen a select palette ahead of time. Thank you for the wonderful tip.
I agree! Being a newbie, when I first began to watch Diane, I immediately saw the potential of the small “sushi” bowls & ordered some! Because of the names & brands, I wrote on the outside of the bowls to refresh my brain when selecting a few colors to paint with. Nostalgia gets me, too when I recall previous projects! Sure enough! My Cotman paints are made in China! Who new...something I never used to think about...but am trying to be more active about now...Love your video, all the different topics. You can try using the back of a knife or pen, on a hard surface, holding on to the end of tube in the other hand, pushing the paint forward in the tube. Worked on the old metal tubes of toothpaste in the day!
Diane, you are the best! Looking at your paints was fun! I'd be afraid to count the tubes of acrylic I have but I know I own right at 160 brushes. My watercolor paints are growing as are the brushes. Thank you for your stories and sharing your time with us.

As a response of your where do we go from here video is this my 5th video I watched to support your channel. I saw that your number of produced videos is way over 700! The knowledge and experience of all the watercolour brands is breathtaking and I thank you for sharing. I appreciate you sharing the old and introducing us to the new. I also appreciate that you encourage us to use what we have too. I like the way that you use the brush and don't necessarily clean before dabbing in another colour. Also like the thicker paint for more depth. My hubby always said my attempts were wishy washy I understand what he means now 😀 . I think my painting has improved and taken a new direction and it's all thanks to you and of course Tamsin for her dedication to technology. xxxx
You sort of demonstrated the very reason I don't use the individual little cups. You've got a big bucket full of clean ones, (though I realize no one really needs that many) and a basket full of little dishes that still have usable paint in them. And like most of us who paint, I would definitely end up with more little dishes than I actually needed, the same way we end up with more paints than we need lol. But that's really the problem, the little dishes take up a lot more space than one decent size palette with a good size mixing area in the center. And you have to individually wash all those little dishes and then store them. Though I do admit that in using one large palette you run into the problem of having left over paint on your palette in colors you may not want for your next painting. So I just put out as little paint as possible, and add a bit more if I need it, so that I don't have to feel guilty that I'm wasting a lot of paint when I wash the palette after every use. It is actually the same concept with the same problems you discussed with having all the tubes of paint.
Oh yes I would love to see your traditional painting. There are many people, especially on RUclips that teach "tips and tricks," which are not new, and sell it as their own creations. Thank you for your videos. ☺☺☺
Embarrassed to say I'm not painting because most of my brushes so old the strands fell out all over the place😅. Dabbled a bit with what I have, starting with quirky birds on card stock & made thank-you notes. Thanks for "hanging in there" as you're appreciated ❤.

As I just texted to Liz and Chrissy “THIS is why I love Diane!” I think I’m lucky in a way..unlike many, although I’ve dabbled in different artistic mediums over my life; it’s never been a career or any professional aspirations or expectations. I do them because I love the process of at least TRYING to create. I seem to have gone through cycles…rug-making, drawing, dried plant creations, singing & songwriting, poetry, writing, sewing, acrylics, oil pastels, don’t even get me started on my wasted year of attempting to spin, knit and crochet..and recent years of Chinese calligraphy, traditional painting and then moving into western WC…and being obsessed with pigments. Very few, if any, I’ve excelled in, but, that’s never been the point. ITS OK (ok, sometimes I get pissy about the money I spent, but 🤷🏼♀️) Right now, dealing with health issues and failing vision..I paint when I can. I have a dozen partial paintings, dozens of sketches, and hundreds of swatch sheets…and that’s OK. I will say..I wasn’t always easy to shrug off failures and unpredictable, crazy results of my ADD and resulting impulsiveness. My big change was studying eastern philosophy and living, and working, in a yoga ashram for 2 years. I was the webmaster of a crazy number of websites, sometimes worked 16hrs a day, 7 days/week..my perfectionism was killing me, literally. And it wasn’t the first time. As someone brought up to believe I’d always be a failure, was worthless, hopeless and an idiot..it took living those two years in the ashram..and the wisdom of several very wise teachers..and a wonderful doctor; to straighten me out. I’m neither a failure, nor am I perfect. And that’s ok. I can lay in bed most of the day if I feel bad or am in pain, “follow what your body is telling you and don’t listen to anyone else. Use that time to read, listen to music or just meditate..IT’S OK!” -Dr Carrie Demers. She and others also taught me my physical imperfections don’t make me worthless, hopeless, stupid or ugly. Neither do my abilities or lack of abilities. They convinced me at the time to take time out and use it to do things I loved..I translated some ancient scriptures and followed their explicit directions-shapes, measure, colors-even the cotton-silk paper I used..and I made Indian Yantras. I gave most of them to my fellow residents and when one Indian friend took one back to India..I had a waiting list of people wanting them, even offering to pay for them. It was my karma yoga..my short, but life hanging gift to the universe. It also filled my need for “perfection” because of the way I created them with exact measurements, colors, materials..using what 2000yr old scriptures prescribed. Eventually, I moved on to other creative pursuits..no guilt, no shame, no pain. And, IT’S OK! Speaking of which…I need to go dig out my leftover cotton-silk paper..maybe even my leftover stubs of my natural oil pastels. I keep meaning to test watercolors on the paper..then I get busy cooking, cleaning, watching Diane’s videos..and forget. And you know what? It’s OK. 😁
Watched this and a second video. When I went back to comment on both I had to re - search this video. Love the little paint dishes. I don’t have the room as everything must fit into a small container. Good idea for when I’m no longer having to keep toys in for the grands. Glad you paint different ways and with different paints. The one trick ponies get very tiring - especially when they convey the one trick is the best way to do all ones painting. I come to learn new things not stay stagnant. Thank you.
Winsor &Newton is still based in London although the production and manufacturing takes place in France which allows shipping to more effective worldwide. It is not made in China. W&N London still is in charge of the original blends to this day. Daler Rowney is still proudly made in the south of England in Bracknell. I use a mix and enjoy a few brands. Hope that helps. Warm greetings from a fellow family of artists in the US. My original painting box from the very early 50s means so much and I can relate because I saved it. Maybe a few new little tubes might be a treat. Surely you have inspired others to take up painting with your love of it. Happy painting! I’m quite forgetful and don’t know if I’ve mentioned to you before, that, when I watch you paint, I try and have a go myself!just before I was due to retire, I had a stroke, which affected my sight and perception, but I’ve always enjoyed making and selling craft objects, so seeing your watercolour paintings, decided to invest in watercolour s but I was disappointed, then you mentioned Kure take paints and haha! What a difference if only to load my brushes faster, totally different! I’ve askedfor us to say what it means to us to have your channel, well I can’t do much really, because after that first stroke in 2020, I continued having strokes in 2021, spent all that year in various hospitals, I was having strokes, every other month. 8 strokes all told, but through it all changed me, and- I had a spiritual experience!and although I felt useless, I can still hobble around and use my right hand, so painting has b e come like therapy, keeps me busy, keeps my mind off my situation and has helped immensely, I hope your RUclips channel continues to grow and becomes one of the most successful channels on RUclips, all the very bestt Wishes to you, and it’s lovely to hear you talk abpout your animals, and rescues, because I love animals and always helpedo order your brushes, as they look the business 🤙🏼you injured or abusednnimals, I can never understand how people will buy an animal, or take it on, and not show it some love, I bought myself a standard poodle in 2020, oh my, she was amazing, she is so clever and so obedient, always trying to please me, but after my first strioke, I felt her love so much more if she wanted to stay next to me all of the time! But again I was in hospital, and as soon as I came home, was back in having had another stroke, my daughter looked after her for me but she also bought a standard poodle a male and she couldn’t kee my lady because her male was obsessed with my lady! Anyway, I had to re home herd, it wouldn’t be enough to say how much it tore my heart, I know she’s well loved and that helps me but I don’t think I will ever have a bond like that again! Sorry for going on , only I got quite emotional , so yes, you have helped me more than I can say and I like how you explain thank you Diane,

I was taught to use a soft pencil to cover the back of a picture I wanted to copy so that I could use it like carbon paper to trace from when I was hmmmmmmm about five years old in 1958???? Oh well, I don’t have a problem with these old ideas being shared - and indeed I put up a short video on this subject about three years ago - but at least people might think about not behaving as if they invented it themself!!! LOL!

I’m always a little “taken back “ at some who feel their lightfast testing is better than the company who has been doing this before they were born. No one has ever stated what process the companies use either….(doubt they know) but they are convinced and have convinced many other people that they can call MAJOR brands liars because they saw some fading after taping their swatches in a window for a year!!!
Are you kidding me?? Doesn’t everyone know to keep your pictures (any medium) out of direct sunlight and watercolor artists I know always frame using UV glass….
It’s absolutely beyond belief to me…but I’m a few months away from 65 and I have loved art and been painting with acrylic and oils since my 20’s.
Granted, I’m fairly new to watercolor but I think I will go with what the company says regarding the paint 😂
I knew more from just reading watercolor books and practicing (I don’t have access to lessons) than several people who are considered “experts “!

Thanks for that idea of cutting the old tubes. Inherited a bunch of very old tubes and as a beginner didn’t think I could use them when they were dried up so I threw them away! 😫

I inherited dried paints in the tube. Being the tightwad I am, I cut the tube open and put them in a palette. They don't stick to it, so that's frustrating, but at least I had some professional grade paints I didn't have before.

Diane, I love the start of this video seeing beautiful you in your cozy studio and then seeing sleeping beauty with the chew ball resting alongside.This painting speaks Autumn to me and all of its vibrant glory. Absolutely stunning! Oh...I was at the market today and saw they are already selling pumpkins, can you believe that? Here in California we're fortunate to have access to a lot of produce but even I wasn't expecting pumpkins in August! Maybe they'll start selling Christmas trees in September....haha... Went to visit my (almost 90 year old) mother today and she has so many of your paintings hanging in her home. They are all from the tutorials that you provided and we did together. On each of these paintings, I worked on the left side of the watercolor paper and she worked on the right. On all of the paintings we signed our initials on the bottom sides respectively and they are proudly displayed throughout the rooms in her home. What a treasure, and all because of you!

I love that you find specific memories in your paint colors! I often find memories in what might seem to others innocuous places. But they’re my memories and they matter to me, wherever they are found. Also we are always evolving, aren’t we? Can’t stagnate to please others

I love those dishes. I bought myself some and I put little labels on the bottoms with the paint names. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what paints are in each dish. 😂
I'm in the UK. I've been looking for some small dishes in the kitchen sections as I saw someone else's video suggesting ceramic is a lot cheaper in kitchen section (rather than buying purpose made artist ceramic bowls).
Although i'm finding that there doesn't seem to be a huge selection or options around at the moment!
Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and where you create art! Please keep on showing your beautiful and inspiring art and know that what you do is valuable! It may be easy for newbies to start but to continuing show something takes very hard work and the fact that art is so other worldly of inspiration and heart adds to it all! Hubby set me up so I can run my RUclips on the tv which I so enjoy to do laundry while I watch and such. Can’t comment until I’m on an actual computer though. Since COVID I’m at a loss for doing my favorite pastimes. I still make handmade cards for friends when I need to, but RUclips watching is my only real hobby! I think life goes through ebb and flow times, but I really appreciate painting videos which are so relaxing and fun!!!
With any hobby I have "dabbled" in, whether it be watercolor, stained glass, mosaics, vintage jewelry art or crocheting, I have found that the joy of accumulating the "junk" is as fun as the art of making. I know the search for the next new item gets in the way of my creating. I am your age and don't know if I can stop at this point! My older sisters have the same challenge. I think I need to join a support group ... or just watch more of your videos! Love them!!!

I think every artist has their own favourite paint. I have mostly M. Graham. They are honey based but I have never seen mould. I think the trick is not filling you palette too full. I have Kuratake 36 which I use occasionally for fun. Some Daniel Smith half-pan palette which I use now and then. I had lots of others and gave it all away. I think anyone who criticizes an artist for their paint or materials probably don’t have much talent and tries to make others look bad to fulfill some false sense of importance. I watch a lot of tutorials and it seems to me they all artists have their own favourite materials. From your channel I’ve learned to try new things and not worry about affordability. I know a man who told me his only tools for school as a child was a stick in the sand. He is an amazing person, talented and loved by all, and I am very proud to know such a person. You just keep on doing what you do, and don’t let well meaning trolls bother you. You don’t need them in your life. Love you!

You're good medicine Diane. Googled Daler Rowney and it looks like they're still made in England. I started out with a little Cotman palette before moving on to Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton. But I'm also very fond of van Gogh student grade paints which are better than Cotman, imho. Lately I'm very sensitive to the cost of a tube of paint. Not that I can't "afford" it, but it seems greedy and offensive to me. At $4 a tube, I can have lots of fun with the van Gogh paints. Completely understand how possessions become infused with emotions; I often lovingly stroke the dashboard of my beloved old car. If Kuretake paints make you happy, then by all means use them!! 😄Love those ceramic pitchers on your table, love all the animal sounds in the background, and thank you so much for not playing music while you paint.

OMG, I can totally relate to what you have said. Last night I was looking for something in my studio I found a W&N watercolor tin, my father had gifted to me when I was a teen. The in is now empty but, was once filled with lovely little tubes of artist’s watercolors. We do have certain memories connected to our art materials. I’ve saved that tin for over fifty years! I had not used watercolors until after the birth of our third son. It had proven too difficult to paint with my oil pants and my acrylics would dry up while trying to settle the inevitable squabbles between three little boys. That’s when I discovered the unused W&N watercolor tin given by father. I fell in love instantly with watercolors that day and I have never looked back!

I can relate to keeping art things for the memories Diane. My aunt (who died almost ten years ago) had lots of art supplies which I hated the idea of being thrown away when she died, so I brought some home. To be honest most I haven’t used either, but every time I go to sort them out all the memories of her come flooding back and everything goes back in the box.
After a break of about eighteen years I have started watercolour painting again since my husband suddenly died last year. I don’t have a studio of even a proper space to work yet, but will have a small area sorted out by the weekend (At the moment I just paint once a week for a couple of hours at an art group I have recently joined.

I really appreciated learning about the Kuretake paints from you. I would love to try your system, but my workspace is a 3x3 card table, so I find it is easier to work exclusively from pans. The Kuretake pans are a wonderful size, so much easier to work with than the more common tiny half pans.
I have the same problem with space. I love the kuratake paints, and recently bought the art nouveau set which is gorgeous.

When I was young I worked for Rowney. I was office staff and the factory was on the same site. We were not allowed in for safety reasons but I was asked to take a parcel down one day. Fascinating to see all the tubes being filled. They are still on the same site but Daler Rowney now

@@DianeAntoneStudio they had some beautiful original paintings on the walls. The one in my office was by a very famous lady painter but unfortunately I cannot remember her name now. It was lovely to look up from my typewriter (way before word processors and computers) and see this gorgeous piece of art. Also lots of interesting art books that I used to read in my lunch hour. Unfortunately due to a change of circumstances at the company my role disappeared, which was a real shame. I often wonder if the picture is still in situ 😁
To get your paint out and save your hands, invest in a tube wringer. You can either buy as a key or small wringer. They are cheap, reusable and invaluable around the home in general (toothpaste! Etc) Much kinder on the hands.

I’m not an artist, so using Daniel Smith for a personal card means nothing to the person I send it to. I Enjoy buying paints that you suggest that are reasonable, and useable. I get anxiety using expensive stuff. I appreciate that you promote fun art without a massive price tag. And I love Kuretaki, already the right color for the job.
The tour through your paint box was fun! I think we all have old tubes laying around for one reason or another. I have some old Dale Rowley acrylics that are in a similar state. 😂 Perhaps... It may be really cathartic for you to do a painting using only tubes which are nearly empty. Then as you squeeze the end of them you can toss them in the trash along with any blocks they've put in you, and declare your victory with something beautiful!
At least however, watercolors come in really tiny tubes, so they take up less space. 🤣😂

I love the idea you have of using those little paint pots. So easy to select your palette ahead of time and eliminate the extra colours you might have in a complete palette set up. This might encourage trying different colour mixes having chosen a select palette ahead of time. Thank you for the wonderful tip.
I agree! Being a newbie, when I first began to watch Diane, I immediately saw the potential of the small “sushi” bowls & ordered some! Because of the names & brands, I wrote on the outside of the bowls to refresh my brain when selecting a few colors to paint with. Nostalgia gets me, too when I recall previous projects! Sure enough! My Cotman paints are made in China! Who new...something I never used to think about...but am trying to be more active about now...Love your video, all the different topics. I especially loved seeing you paint the flowers, mixing and adding to your brush. It always amazes me that you don't come up with a lot of mud. You can try using the back of a knife or pen, on a hard surface, holding on to the end of tube in the other hand, pushing the paint forward in the tube. Worked on the old metal tubes of toothpaste in the day!

You've got a big bucket full of clean ones, (though I realize no one really needs that many) and a basket full of little dishes that still have usable paint in them. And like most of us who paint, I would definitely end up with more little dishes than I actually needed, the same way we end up with more paints than we need lol. But that's really the problem, the little dishes take up a lot more space than one decent size palette with a good size mixing area in the center. And you have to individually wash all those little dishes and then store them. Though I do admit that in using one large palette you run into the problem of having left over paint on your palette in colors you may not want for your next painting. So I just put out as little paint as possible, and add a bit more if I need it, so that I don't have to feel guilty that I'm wasting a lot of paint when I wash the palette after every use. It is actually the same concept with the same problems you discussed with having all the tubes of paint.

I think I’m lucky in a way..unlike many, although I’ve dabbled in different artistic mediums over my life; it’s never been a career or any professional aspirations or expectations. I do them because I love the process of at least TRYING to create. I seem to have gone through cycles…rug-making, drawing, dried plant creations, singing & songwriting, poetry, writing, sewing, acrylics, oil pastels, don’t even get me started on my wasted year of attempting to spin, knit and crochet..and recent years of Chinese calligraphy, traditional painting and then moving into western WC…and being obsessed with pigments. Very few, if any, I’ve excelled in, but, that’s never been the point. ITS OK (ok, sometimes I get pissy about the money I spent, but 🤷🏼♀️)
Right now, dealing with health issues and failing vision..I paint when I can. I have a dozen partial paintings, dozens of sketches, and hundreds of swatch sheets…and that’s OK.
I will say..I wasn’t always easy to shrug off failures and unpredictable, crazy results of my ADD and resulting impulsiveness. My big change was studying eastern philosophy and living, and working, in a yoga ashram for 2 years. I was the webmaster of a crazy number of websites, sometimes worked 16hrs a day, 7 days/week..my perfectionism was killing me, literally. And it wasn’t the first time. As someone brought up to believe I’d always be a failure, was worthless, hopeless and an idiot..it took living those two years in the ashram..and the wisdom of several very wise teachers..and a wonderful doctor; to straighten me out. I’m neither a failure, nor am I perfect. And that’s ok. I can lay in bed most of the day if I feel bad or am in pain, “follow what your body is telling you and don’t listen to anyone else. Use that time to read, listen to music or just meditate..IT’S OK!” -Dr Carrie Demers. She and others also taught me my physical imperfections don’t make me worthless, hopeless, stupid or ugly. Neither do my abilities or lack of abilities. They convinced me at the time to take time out and use it to do things I loved..I translated some ancient scriptures and followed their explicit directions-shapes, measure, colors-even the cotton-silk paper I used..and I made Indian Yantras. I gave most of them to my fellow residents and when one Indian friend took one back to India..I had a waiting list of people wanting them, even offering to pay for them. It was my karma yoga..my short, but life hanging gift to the universe. It also filled my need for “perfection” because of the way I created them with exact measurements, colors, materials..using what 2000yr old scriptures prescribed. Eventually, I moved on to other creative pursuits..no guilt, no shame, no pain. And, IT’S OK!
Speaking of which…I need to go dig out my leftover cotton-silk paper..maybe even my leftover stubs of my natural oil pastels. I keep meaning to test watercolors on the paper..then I get busy cooking, cleaning, watching Diane’s videos..and forget.
And you know what? It’s OK. 😁

Watched this and a second video. When I went back to comment on both I had to re - search this video. Love the little paint dishes. I don’t have the room as everything must fit into a small container. Good idea for when I’m no longer having to keep toys in for the grands. Glad you paint different ways and with different paints. The one trick ponies get very tiring - especially when they convey the one trick is the best way to do all ones painting. I come to learn new things not stay stagnant. Thank you.

Winsor &Newton is still based in London although the production and manufacturing takes place in France which allows shipping to more effective worldwide. It is not made in China. W&N London still is in charge of the original blends to this day. Daler Rowney is still proudly made in the south of England in Bracknell. I use a mix and enjoy a few brands. Hope that helps. Warm greetings from a fellow family of artists in the US. My original painting box from the very early 50s means so much and I can relate because I saved it. Maybe a few new little tubes might be a treat. Surely you have inspired others to take up painting with your love of it. Happy painting! This was so enjoyable hearing you reminisce about the history of your paints. I am just beginning on my journey to watercolor I’ve spent 2 years doing digital art. I’ve been too scared and overwhelmed to even think of trying to do real watercolor until now having watched a half dozen of your videos. Charming listening to your words. I’m quite forgetful and don’t know if I’ve mentioned to you before, that, when I watch you paint, I try and have a go myself!just before I was due to retire, I had a stroke, which affected my sight and perception, but I’ve always enjoyed making and selling craft objects, so seeing your watercolour paintings, decided to invest in watercolour s but I was disappointed, then you mentioned Kure take paints and haha! What a difference if only to load my brushes faster, totally different! I’ve askedfor us to say what it means to us to have your channel, well I can’t do much really, because after that first stroke in 2020, I continued having strokes in 2021, spent all that year in various hospitals, I was having strokes, every other month. 8 strokes all told, but through it all changed me, and- I had a spiritual experience!and although I felt useless, I can still hobble around and use my right hand, so painting has b e come like therapy, keeps me busy, keeps my mind off my situation and has helped immensely, I hope your RUclips channel continues to grow and becomes one of the most successful channels on RUclips, all the very bestt Wishes to you, and it’s lovely to hear you talk abpout your animals, and rescues, because I love animals and always helpedo order your brushes, as they look the business 🤙🏼you injured or abusednnimals, I can never understand how people will buy an animal, or take it on, and not show it some love, I bought myself a standard poodle in 2020, oh my, she was amazing, she is so clever and so obedient, always trying to please me, but after my first strioke, I felt her love so much more if she wanted to stay next to me all of the time! But again I was in hospital, and as soon as I came home, was back in having had another stroke, my daughter looked after her for me but she also bought a standard poodle a male and she couldn’t kee my lady because her male was obsessed with my lady! Anyway, I had to re home herd, it wouldn’t be enough to say how much it tore my heart, I know she’s well loved and that helps me but I don’t think I will ever have a bond like that again! Sorry for going on , only I got quite emotional , so yes, you have helped me more than I can say and I like how you explain thank you Diane,
