For funsies bc I love animals genetics I tried my hand at using the calculator for Mayo and Greg! (I'm a bit rusty in my horse genetics so there might be some flaws
I think the game genetics are more similar to real life than you think. At least from what I’ve seen from horse breeder videos. Babies don’t usually get a mix they end up kind of one or the other for the most part? Like the mom you have is Bay (a brown horse, black points, which is legs, mane, tail) so baby wouldn’t be that brown color with dad’s pattern in real life either. Baby would be Bay and look just like mom or gray. I believe. I could be wrong but that’s what I got from watching horse girls on tiktok lol
Yes, you're really not gonna get any weird combinations of the parents. Theyll usually look like one of the parents when it comes to coat pattern/color. At most theyll be a shade or two darker or lights most of the time. If they have any white markings (stars/socks etc) then those will be different and unique. So itd be better to keep the same pattern they get and just touch it up with one of the brushes to make it more unique and change the shapes a bit. Give them x/4 white socks instead of their parents, change how much they go up the leg, drag the star/forehead mark to a slightly different spot and change the shape a bit. My family only does thoroughbreds, but i feel like if you're mixing breeds that are vastly different like a Clydesdale and another breed there might be some differences in body shape and size as well (thicker neck/legs etc). BUT for coat pattern and color its pretty straightforward from what i've seen.
horses change their coat colours many times throughout their life! i once irl had a foal who was born completely black and now 13yrs later he’s flea bitten grey!
@@sombrerodog i wouldn't say many times. More like usually a gradual change from one color to another. However thats more akin to a baby deer or lion loosing their spots as they grow up as their coat will change when they lose their foal coat. Grey's in particular are a weird case as they start with a base colour that gets diluted by dominant grey pigment. Not like a horse is genetically changing their coat from one parent to the other.
Yeah that is a terrible example actually! Almost all alleles for white spotting are simple dominants, so 50% of the foals would, in fact, have the pattern! :)
Here are some questions for you: why are there no outfits for them as for the cottage living animals? Or via knitting. Why no horse/goat/sheep fair or new knitting patterns? Not even a kiddy toy...
@@dianacfleming Cows and bulls are kept differently from how goats are kept. It's less of an issue with the cow tethered to the animal shed. You can only fit one shed on many lots and even if you can fit two, it tends to look a bit strange. In contrast, if a sim is going to keep goats, they will most likely be keeping several. It is very odd that none of them can really be billy goats. We should have gotten something more like the chickens from Cottage Living: two sexes, two ages, and the ability to breed them.
Horse coat colours really depend on the genetics of both parents right down to the tiniest genes 😅 it’s less like looking like both parents. You could have a bay roan dam and a grey sire and end up with a chestnut rabicano, because one of the parents has the rabicano gene in their lineage

Goats eat bugs and sheep eat weeds. If you have one Sim collect them at night they stay in their inventory until you put them back out. It is what I started to do at night.
The constant neighbors making destressing potions is not technically a bug afaik, it's tied to NAPs, either the food one or the body and mind wellness one iirc. Same thing with sims making thousands of white cakes, playing with clay, doing push ups, etc. This is why I stopped allowing NAPs to be active in my saves.
You probably know this, but just in case, the de-stressing potion bug comes from one of the NAPs. I think it’s self sufficiency but I could be wrong. If you remove that, it’ll stop.
EA didn't bother too much. In the Sims' notebook, wool is still written as "llamas", although the mini-sheep also bring wool. I also think it's stupid that the goats don't give goat's milk
I think the horse genetics aren't terrible in regards to realism. In real life there are a few genes that determine coat color so there are wild cards (if there's something in the lineage), but usually if you have a straight bay (brown with black points) and a straight gray, you won't get a mix color breeding, it would most likely be one or the other. Technically genetically it may be a different color like black or chestnut/sorrel (red), but the gray gene will mask it. But you wouldn't get a red spotted (dappled) horse with a white mane and tail, if that makes sense. Now realistically, there ARE other variations depending on what the grandparents coloring DNA was, but first generation horses in the game don't have parent DNA to pull from. Someone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I did take an equine genetics course in college... But that was a long time ago so I could be remembering incorrectly.
Given that non-bay and chestnut are both recessive it is actually entirely possible for a bay and a (bay based) grey to have a black or chestnut foal if they were both heterozygous for non-bay (which could lead to a black foal) or chestnut. Now if both parents were chestnut then they couldn’t have a black foal, and if both were black they couldn’t have a bay foal, but two bays really could have any other ‘base’ colour, lol. It’s just statistically more likely the foal would be bay like the parents.
And given a ‘red’ horse with a ‘white’ mane and tail is just a chestnut with flaxen two bays could totally have that as flaxen doesn’t show up in bay horses, just like how bay doesn’t show up on chestnut. Unless you were meaning the silver dapple modifier which, yeah, wouldn’t show up out of no where as it is dominant, just like grey.
@@spots6450 I do understand that. 🙂 I was definitely trying to over simplify it. Lol There are a LOT of genes that truly determine coat color. And like I said, in real life you have to take the whole DNA picture to figure out what they could have. And not knowing what these Sim horses parents looked like, it's impossible to know what all other color options are actually a possibility. Sure, we can assume chestnut and black are options but they *are* less likely. So it doesn't bother me as being wholly unrealistic in the sims, especially in the case where ancestry can't be accounted for. But I forgot about flaxen as an option! Though in my example I was thinking a true grey mane, like plucking color traits from each Sim horse parent and mixing and matching them on a baby. That's not really how horse genetics work with color. Silver and dilution are a whole other thing so I wasn't going to go there. 😂 Though it is really fun to dive into genetics, I don't expect a sims game to have hyper realistic horse genetics. And we can always change it in cas. 😉
To did the same with my foal the other day, it came out carbon copy of one coat and color wise, so I kept the coat and pattern, and then took the color from the other parent to make it look more like “both.”
