    EP 121 - Choosing top dressing for my succulent pots and bowls
    I've got a few more loose ends to tie with the design for my Patreon Shrine. Most of this involves finding the right pebbles to dress my pots and bowls.
    I turned to Soilworx to gather a few bags of pebbles but I was pleasantly surprised to see that they have expanded their range of pots. There are several designs that I like and would love to use for my spring competition entries, so I'll definitely look into their selection.
    Soilworx is my landscaping supplies sponsor and I would like to pass on some of it to you. If you head over to their Deer Park Centre and mention that you were sent by Chuck of Cerriscapades, you will get 10% off on pots and potting mixes.

    Wow great work Chuck! I was really hoping you would opt for cobalt blue pots, but those beige bowls really blend well with the blue/green backdrop and let the your beautiful Echeveria hybrids do all the talking. Love what you have done!

    Hello your channel is incredible you have taught me so much. Thank you for all you help. I have found topdressing to be a nightmare personally. It creates quite a few problems in my pots so I remove all of it. The biggest problem for myself is the stones keep the pot weter for way longer leading very quickly to fungus and fungus nats, (the bane of my existence) which in turn can lead to root rot. It seems crazy to me the we all go to so much effort to mix extra mediums in to our soil to create well drawing soil that drys fast, then we essentially put a lid on it by applying stones(topdressing). Have you experienced any of these problems and if so do you know a way around these issues?

      Hi Irene. With top dressing, you'll want to do it if the plants are in a well-ventilated area, and get a decent amount of direct sunlight because you will need a bit of evaporation for it to work. This is perfect for in-ground arrangements, but less so for plants in pots that are placed in a protected position. If you have them in pots and not out in the open, no need for top dressing.

    What's the advantage to using a shallow bowl/dish over a standard pot? I like the look of bowls/dishes, but I worry about there being enough room for the roots.

      That's a very good question. Might be worth making a video directly addressing this. I won't make you wait for that though. Here's what I think.
      Most succulents do not grow deep roots unlike standard plants. It has to do with their habitat. The wild ones tend to grow in arid locations, where it is rocky and the soil is not necessarily deep. Problem is this also stunts their growth. This is because they either get too constricted, or in the case of larger varieties, they will get so top heavy and fall over easily in high winds due to lack of root support.
      In cultivation, those problems are mitigated because we tend to give them larger spaces and properly sized pots to allow them to thrive.
      As far as pots are concerned, once you give it enough depth, they would not go any deeper. You will notice that the bulk of the roots only grow to a certain depth and instead spread laterally like a net. They can get more moisture that way, and more structural strength since their hold is spread to a larger area.
      Deeper pots are good drainage because any pooling water tends to go deep and far away from the roots. This is good for succulents since we know to not let them sit too long in water. This problem is mitigated if you use porous pots such as terracotta, concrete, hypertufa, etc. Basically anything unsealed, not glazed, or not made of plastic. Because water can seep through the walls instead of just draining from the bottom. So the soil does not stay wet for too long.
      As for my choice of pots vs bowls, this is mainly aesthetic, but I also pick bowls that are deep enough to support the needs of the plant.

    I thought you should only repot a succulent in the spring? I know we are opposite seasons. I live in California.

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 лет назад +2

      It's nearing the end of autumn here but on average it is still warm enough that they will grow. Repotting the winter-dormant plants anytime is fine as long as you do not do major damage such as chopping their stem and force thrm to grow roots. Well you can, but it will be much slower than doing it when they are actively growing.
      Also I prefer redoing my landscapes in autumn because it is no longer scorching hot outside, and the plants won't be growing crazy fast so my design stays intact longer without having to prune anything.
      Last year I made a video about chopping my mature echeveria very close to winter. They didn't grow roots throughout winter, and started sprouting roots in spring. Just make sure to keep them dry or at least not constantly wet and you'll be fine.

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 лет назад +4

      To keep it simple, people just say to not do anything outside of spring just to be safe. Anytime is safe if you know what you are doing, because you will take the needed precautions 😁
      Thanks for asking this question, I think this will make a good topic for a video!
