I remember the man whom they contacted to make the bust of what List would have looked like at the time, the one used on AMW, researched and put together an image of exactly how he aged. I was hooked then--seeing how he picked the exact same style of glasses to use for the bust that List was wearing when they captured him was incredible. Lamont, I am new to your channel and am also hooked. The way you tell the story, time everything so perfectly, but most importantly give the victims the dignity and respect they deserve is outstanding. Thank you for your quality content and hard work!

I know Robert Blake made his name when he portrayed Perry Smith, one of the killers of the CLUTTER family in the film adaptation of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood"; but I don't recall him playing John List. What movie is that because I'd love to watch it. Robert Blake is a very complex, angry, intriguing guy and one hell of an actor. He was brilliant in "In Cold Blood", which is STILL one of the best true crime movies ever made. A good follow-up movie after you watch "In Cold Blood" is the movie "Capote" starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote. Much of that film focuses on Capote's in jail interviews with Perry Smith and the somewhat strange friendship/fascination he develops with him. Truman Capote was a brilliant, eccentric, witty writer. Hoffman literally morphed into him and nailed his neurotic mannerisms, voice and lisp. I think Blake and Hoffman are two of the greatest actors of their generation.

I've studied this case for a long time. He was a religious fanatic/tyrant. He was raised a mama's boy, and was very controlled by his mother. He was a chronic failure in his accounting work, because of his utter inability to relate to other employees. His wife was disgusted with him after years of his failures and religious fanaticism. He hated anyone who didn't think the way he did. His mother gave him power of attorney over her considerable amount of money when he asked her to move into the Westfield house. He stole almost all of it. He was afraid of her finding that out, which was one reason he killed her. He was enraged at his wife and kids for their disdain for his religious fanaticism. He killed his wife and kids because he didn't think they deserved to live. And then he ran, and hid out for almost 18 years. The Westfield police sent flyers out to every Lutheran church they could find in America, asking for their help if he ever came to one of their churches, but they refused. Revolting! And when he was asked why he didn't kill himself after what he'd done, he said "That would have been a sin!" He had no shame or conscience concerning his murders...he thought he was completely justified in what he did. He was happy in prison...he was being taken care of, and could pretend to be a pure christian to his fellow prisoners. List was a purely revolting and cowardly creature...just horrible. When I read that he had died, I thought to myself, now he's finally facing true and deserved justice!

This was the first true crime story I became interested in. He didn't tell his family he lost his job and got up and got dressed and left like he was going to work each day. Their house was huge and way more than they could afford, but supposedly his wife insisted. Story goes that she was an unhappy woman with a drinking problem and was not good to him at all. Who knows though, and I don't like to speak ill of the dead or a victim, and it absolutely doesn't justify what he did even if that is true. Such a tragic story and crazy how long it took them to find him.

John List wasn’t crazy. Just cold and calculating. His family had become a burden and a liability to him. If he was truly concerned about his family’s well being there were other options he could have explored to alleviate the family’s financial difficulties. We all go through hard times and stressful situations. The majority of us don’t see killing our family as a viable solution to our problems.

I next heard about it at school when I learned that they were going to profile him on America's Most Wanted and that some of the kids on my sister's class were going to be playing kids in List's Sunday School class during the segment. When the episode aired, I remember thinking that they were never going to catch him. You can imagine my surprise (and the rejoicing at my school) when they caught him a few weeks later.

I’m so sorry to hear that you are depressed while pregnant! Please talk to someone and know that you aren’t alone. I was depressed while I was pregnant also. I felt so “wrong” to be depressed because I was initially SO thrilled to be finally pregnant after many complicated losses between my first (18 years ago) and my second (9months old.) I loved being pregnant with my first. Loved my changing body, my mood was “normal”, loved the maternity clothes, it was so exciting so I couldn’t understand WHY I was soo depressed this time. It isn’t like me at all, I’m a glass half full, smile through my struggles and stay positive, lift others up type of person when not pregnant. Literally, my nickname is “sunshine”. But Hormones do crazy things and I learned quickly that every pregnancy is very different. Many people didn’t even know I was pregnant. Due to vivid but I also couldn’t get motivated to move off the couch most days. My body felt like it was 1,000lbs dragging it around- but it had nothing to do with my actual weight. I was healthy and on track, had everything to be thankful for. I don’t want to make this about me - please don’t take this that way! I just want you to know that you are not alone in feeling like you do. After I had my baby the hormone began to immediately die down and within a few days I was feeling more and more like “me”. I pray the same happens for you. It’s made me afraid to consider having another- along with all of the losses I had, but more so I’m afraid to feel that way again. I wish I had been able to enjoy being pregnant, it’s such a beautiful thing! Sometimes people feel better while pregnant too, so depending where you are at in your pregnancy it can get better. I pray for your health and strength - physically and mentally and your baby’s health too of course. ♥️♥️♥️

I also find it extremely ironic that the original mansion's ballroom had a stained-glass skylight that was signed by L.C. Tiffany and was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars even in 1971. The sale of that piece of exquisite art would have solved all of the List's financial woes and allowed them to live.

I remember seeing this story several years ago on cable tv and couldn't remember if he was caught or not. I am so glad. You can run but you can't hide.

The glass ceiling in the great room was made by Tiffany and Company. It was worth 1/2 million dollars.
If only he would have known.

So what happened to the ceiling now ?

If they didn't remove the ceiling before the fire, it likely was destroyed in the fire.
