Azulejos, such a beautiful and ancient tradition. Vastly predating the Dutch import of porcelain work techniques from China.
In fact, it could perhaps be traced all the way back through time to the ancient near east. The blue and yellow painted bricks of the Babylonian Ishtar Gate. ?? Finding it’s way to Spain and Portugal with the Moors. ??
    It’s just a theory.
    Absolutely beautiful in any case!

The first azulejos ( blue and white )were imported from Delft Holand . A non catholic country wich the dipicting of Big evangelic scenes inside churches were not according with their religious principles ! Portugal needed BIG pannels to cover the walls of its churches in order to increase the interior visual space. Portuguese churches are mostly with a Rectangular plant . Covering that interior with perspective scenes give to the visual space an ilusión of beeing larger !
