- A long queue of cars drive along the only road south to evacuate from Fort McMurray, after four neighborhoods of the city in Canada's major oil-producing region, were ordered evacuated as an out of control wildfire drew near and the skies filled with smoke.

When conditions are right the fires can jump 1000s of feet to new areas. In 2016 the fire jumped across the Athabasca river. My grandfather told me in the 60s, 70s, and 80s they ferociously fought every lightinig strike by flying in crews. Along with fires being a natural cycle, he believes their efforts created a build up of dead trees and undergrowth that we are seeing burn with the lack of snow and rain in recent years. Controlled burns and public awarness would likely have the greatest impact, but these fires will happen either way..

So, when are you guys going to spend a lil' MORE money on firefighting/managing? I mean come on, you saw this coming down South for the last twenty years, and for that you have no excuse. Your making Brazil look good, and they had to work hard on the rainforest to achieve their current position, while apparently all of you up there are doing nothing. Quit being selfish and show some global responsibility and protect the worlds future toilet paper supply. You must realize by now that the population of Canada will continue to rise as long as it keeps getting warmer? If/When that happens where do you think the entire population of the Americas and a big chunk of SE Asia will eventually end up? Right there in Alberta. You guys need to prepare!

i agree with ya but its the smoke coming in from 100 of miles no way to prevent that no way...fire would be out but it will smolder for days if not months....no way to breath clean air until it rains for a week solide even then it will still smolder
Thank you for intelligent observation. There are other simple solutions like steel siding and roofing. All these ideas were presented by Darby Allen to Mayor and Council late 2016 I believe. They choose to ignore these low cost solutions in their wisdom??
