DCS: F/A-18C Hornet | JHMCS & AIM-9X Tutorial! | Day & Night

- This is a tutorial on how to use the basic functions of the Joint Helmet Mounted Queuing System or JHMCS in the DCS: F/A-18C!
The F/A-18C was one of the first aircraft to have JHMCS integrated into it and the Legacy Hornet served as the test bed for its integration into the USN, USMC and USAF's inventory. However, the USAF F-15C and USN F/A-18E/F squadrons were the first to employ the JHMCS operationally with the Legacy Hornet Squadrons following in short Succession.
One of the last aircraft in the US arsenal to have the JHMCS integrated was the F-15E Strike Eagle and currently the F-22 Raptor is not equipped with the JHMCS.

Good video. A couple notes: 1- the correct term is blanking, not blinking. 2- press and HOLD the cage/uncage button to best self track the seeker.

I've got a good friend who flew Mirages for the South African Air Force and he told me that the Soviets actually stole their design to use on the MiG-29 and Su-27. The SAAF was way ahead of the curve on this. As were the Israelis.

Just found this video. It's cool to see one of these in action. I make them.
The Soviets/Russians NEVER had an operational helmet mounted display. What they did have was helmet mounted sighting system, but other than a reticle it didn't display any data or flight information. JHMCS although basic is a helmet mounted display. It displays basic attitude, heading and altitude information to add to the pilots situational awareness.

Thanks for the tutorial, it's very helpful. Just some constructive criticism:
1) JHMCS is pronounced 'Jeh-him-icks'
2) The South Africans actually had helmet mounted cueing before the Soviets. The Soviets took note after seeing it's effectiveness.
3) "Fox Two" would be an IR shot

Great video as always! The US did have an earlier helmet mounted display on the Apache, dunno if it was before or after the Soviets developed their own though.

USAF A-10C's do now incorporate a HMD for things such as ground target desig and what not.

Yep! If not more! The AIM-9X we have in DCS is the Block 1 version the Block 2 can do even more!
Oh heck yeah. The combo of rear plane active control surfaces and thrust vanes gives INSANE alpha capabilities. Block 2 is still super hush on specs because ya know, it's a bleeding edge weapon

Does all the setup for the JHMCS display save, and it will be the same over different missions and flights, even multiplayer servers? I mean if I make it only show a circle, does it remain like this forever, or it does reset to default?
Hey Spud, I have a question nothing related to the video. I noticed in the video the pilots helmet has a dark visor, was you running any mods for this? My visor is pretty much see through. I just think the tinted visor looks cooler lol
Updated version? We need to figure out how to effectively use uplook acm for aim9x i imagine alot of people getting upset with a 270 degree fox2 in the burner

Hi, I can't get the 9x to chase its target. I've tried every way to lock it. Cage, HMD, bore. I get ton, I get shoot key. I can get 9m to lock and chase. Please help

And if I may push it a little bit, if your going to make a video about it, would this be possible to show (if you know) how to enable the free cam (ctrl+F11) to go under the "locked" low altitude close to the ground... I think there is a setting somewhere that limit the camera getting too close to the ground not to be able to go through it. This is still a mistery to me on how to do this again, but I knew how before from an older version of dcs. In today's version, I am unable to do those nice screenshots close to the ground to give more interesting compositions. Like this example : ibb.co/gm9vCq

drudishauser there’s a drop down menu in the settings to switch to abbreviated or Dots for the labels

Он явно неправ. Считать что Хорнет "бревно" - нет никаких оснований. Предположу что наш коллега просто не снял стопор включения форсажа. :) Ибо без форсажей Хорнет , конечно , не впечатлит при энергичном маневрировании.
Кстати стопор форсажей ( Afterburner denent ) можно постоянно активироватьв "специальных настройках" для модуля F-18.
Ну или не забыть назначить команду его ручного включения/отключения.
А нашлемка + AIM-9Х на Хорнете - это очень круто , и дает большое приимущество в БВБ.
Сама нашлемка Хорнета , конечто же , лучше более старой "Щели" которая есть на Су-27/33 и МиГ-29.
Даже с учетом того что пока не реализованы ее возможности при работе по земле.
Кстати - не забываем что HMD может работать совместно с очками ночного видения.

Is JHCMS can be used with 9X only? What about AIM-120?
Right now only 9X
Aim-120 its a radar homing missile for medium range, low maneuverability for short distance
The Aim-120 doesn't work with JHMCS or HMD in real life

How do you get night vision on the Hornet ?
There is a key bind to turn on your NVG's, you should bind the gain up and down as well to adjust the brightness! I am not at my DCS PC right now so I can't really answer which key combo it is

Its a shame it doesn't have an inclination indicator and/or a pitch ladder. That would be really usefull on a dogfight.

Does anyone know if there's any way to fly in the Hornet with the helmet visors lowered? I think this is will be a nice touch from ED if we have this possibility.

@@Spudknocker I know buddy but in first person view we don't have the sensation of the sunglasses in the visor when it's lowered (or am I wrong). I'm not sure If I make myself clear (english is not my primary language).

Shouldn't the JHMCS not work with NVG's? IIRC in reality the NVG uses the same mount as the JHMCS Mount, i.e. you can only have one or the other... and the JHMCS does not have incorporated night vision.

can you use this to lock a target with radar? would be nice to just look at a target in a gunfight to lock them like in the Russian fc3 birds
I am unsure if that is possible with the JHMCS but would be curious to find out!
I'm pretty sure that it can. The F16 can lock targets with radar using JHMCS. I think it also will show the location of targets locked up on the JHMCS too

@@Spudknocker The F-16 can slave the radar to the JHMCS and it's been ridiculously valuable for me in Falcon BMS. I only hope the Hornet can do the same.

F/A-18C in the US Navy inventory does NOT have JHMCS...nor is ever equipped with Aim-9X...
LooxGood are you trolling? Because it’s well documented that Charlie Hornets in USN inventory are equipped with both the JHMCS and the -9X
@@Spudknocker As far as I know, there hasn't been any major upgrade to USN F/A-18A/B/C/D since early 2000s to adopt Aim-9X since the plan is to phase them out. If what you are saying is true, I'd love to see the source - perhaps I am missing something.
NATOPS Flight Manual for the F/A-18A/B/C/D and future models includes a page for the AIM9X and JHMCS on 1-2-185. So yes, they had it implemented for a while, in fact, ít was tested in 2001.
can we import reject settings to mp?
Unknown, I am sure someone can come up with a mod like the countermeasures profiles mod that will allow you to save your custom settings. However I think that the default setting for both REJ 1 and 2 is pretty perfect in terms of giving enough info without being too cluttered.
