How we decorate our house for Christmas

- Flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery shows you how she decorates her house for Christmas.
I have strong feelings about what kind of tree makes a good tree, and why there's no point in trying to be chic about Christmas decorations. Trying to be chic about something inherently unchic is unchic itself in fact. Be too matchy matchy with your Christmas tree decorations and you'll inevitably end up with a tree that looks as though it wants to be in Harrods food hall instead of a real home.
I think Christmas decorations are about happy memories and handed down treasure - not valuable treasure, but things that are treasure because of the meanings they have for each person.
Anyway, have a look and I hope you enjoy. My absolute favourite Christmas decoration is our little town of Bethlehem which is also made of quite a random mix of little houses, a pub, and a great many kings as well as three ships, one of which is flying.
And then I take you to the 'dining hall' we make out of our back hall where I show you why table cloths don't have to be perfectly ironed, but do have to have creases straight along the table's lines, and give you the top tip for candle lighting that you may have always needed.
This time of year is dark and gloomy here in Somerset, and I love the sparkle that Christmas decorations bring as well as the excuse to light candles for the winter solstice, reminding us that light will return, that the year does turn, that there will be spring and summer again, and that all will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well (as Dame Julian of Norwich wrote as the plague raged across Europe in the 1300s, nearly eight hundred years ago.)

My cousin kept the tree topper her older daughter made in kindergarten or first grade. It was a picture of an angel drawn on a paper plate. Her mother kept giving her expensive, tasteful tree toppers, but my cousin used the paper plate angel for years. I love your tree. It shows family love.

I have inherited my parents and grandparents decorations. It’s such an emotional unboxing each year, but I love it.
I used to have a matchy matchy themed tree as a young woman. But over the years I’ve got over myself! I’ve collected and been gifted such glorious trinkets and treasures, and they all smoosh together on the tree.

And like you I struggle so much with the dark, the grey rain and bleakness. Thank goodness for Christmas, for hope of spring, for the comfort of family. And an extra serving of good food and laughter.
I love the treasures that the Christmas decs are - and I also love that they get put away for most of the year because the fun and surprise and pleasure one gets when one gets them out makes up a bit for the dark days x
You have inspired me...
Years ago I built a mouse house (from recycled materials) in our heating room which is part of our farm in the Netherlands. I think I'm going to move everything and make a mouse house Christmas tree with the grandchildren. Seems great, don't you think? I love love your Bethlehem town. But most of all i think you are a very creative and lovely women. Above all, continue to be a wonderful person

One of the most fun things I'm doing this year is to go into my old photos and pull the "bits&bobs" or "odd lot" pictures where people are making cute & funny faces and the figures in the images are small. I crop them out and put them into the beautiful little Christmas tree ornament frames - they are all on sale now at the Art Supply & Crafting Shop here in the US. The frames are so very pretty and come with a ribbon. The funny & cute little pictures look adorable and bring back so many memories - my grown children & my old friends are now reliving their childhoods with these photo ornaments I'm making!

I love your decorations George! I thought we were the only ones still decorating with the little "treasures' we've gathered over the years... they mean nothing to anyone else but a lot to us! Bethlehem is beautiful too and I can see a project involving a bookcase in our house. I do love your style and I really love all the traditional family and church centred things we have always done at Christmas. I usually stick to cooking and cleaning but now in my 60s I might just tackle the tree and decorations if God spares us to Christmas 2024. God bless you for sharing so kindly with us. So much fun! We have a winter storm warning here in Valemount in the mountains of British Columbia, but are warm and snug in our little house with the wood burning stove! To make that middle candle stay upright, you could drip a tiny puddle of hot wax in the holder, then set the candle in and hold for a few seconds while the wax starts to cool.
Haha - I try every year but my boy made this at school when he was about 7 and the hole is irretrievably wonky x

I think the piano here came from the village hall where my mother grew up - I hope they got another one!

Absolutely adore your Christmas decor!🎄 we too have kept our childrens handmade ones and bring different ones out each year. A stable made of sticks from the garden and a hand carved nativity scene from my home in Malawi, with a great variety of animals eg a pangolin ! Complete the scene with fairy lights.

We always celebrate the solstice and last night just around 6 PM we had a power cut so out came the candles and the room did look lovely! How utterly uplifting and charming! I feel exactly the same way about trees and overall Christmas swag. Everything here is connected to a memory of something or someone, including a tree ornament ball my mom made in the 60s which looks like it came from a Star Trek theme tree in Elizabeth Taylor's lounge lol.

A very happy Christmas Georgie what a pleasure to see your Christmas memories, I feel each year opening the boxes of decorations is like opening Christmas memories filled with so much, I to add a new one or two each year, in the children stocking I always add a decorations so they can add to their memories too I say children they’re 35 twins! & 27 still having stocking!!! 😂
