Hey Rich, glad you're back and I'm very sorry for your loss. It hurts a lot, I know that right now myself, my mom has passed away just a few weeks ago. I'm sure your mom was very proud and she has had every reason to. I know you only from your lessons but it's quite clear what kind of a (hu)man you are. More of your kind would benefit all of us. Music helps coping with loss and hurt and our lives will go on, always remembering our lost ones, they are with us and in us. All the best and keep on, love what you're doing.
@@alexl.9917 I'm so sorry to hear about your dear mom, Alex. I wish no one had to go through this terrible pain. I thank you so much for your kind words. That really does mean a great deal. Honestly, I am the (hu)man I am because of my mom. Lots of love and strength to you and your family during this difficult time, my friend. ❤🙏🏾
@@soulstart89 thank you, it's for a beautiful soul. Though I don't know Rich personally, I'm so sure about him being an absolutely good and amazing person, just listen to some of his amazing work is all for me to see and feel that.
I just found your channel and I'm loving it. I'm 63 and started bass a couple of years ago. Your presentation style is relatable and you're a good communicator. Thanks for your instruction.
63 and playing bass is one of the greatest things I have ever heard! Usually you would expect 63 year olds to hate music, and yet we have great people like you still jamming to music!
I'm horrible at solos but when I try to make one up I take a similar approach. I'll take the root note or even line of the song then add something walking up, go back to the root, then add a progression walking down. Until I can refine it and add more intricate accents and notes, that serves as a good base to work from.
You are a treasure to the bass world! Not knowing you, I’d venture to say a treasure to humanity as well. I love your content! Your a great teacher with a calm demeanor, and thorough explanations. Thank you 🙏
Holy moly. This just blew my mind. Never even considered approaching soloing this way. Welcome back. And thank you for continuing to open my mind to all sorts of new ideas.
I just discovered your vids and have to say that the way you teach makes SOO much sense to me. With two videos I've seen you have made sense of some of my troubled areas of playing. Thanks for the goods my friend.
You are a great spirited man. I was raised in the 1979 California Disco 'Rascals', so at age 5? I saw everything from live Parliament shows down to Bootsy music all night under the silver globe. I was the music director's little brat 5 year old son, and with no babysitter? I got to sneak with her to work and watch people dance to disco and funk all night for about 3 nights a weeks despite school. ~~~~Ironically as a 48 year old goth rock musician of the guitar? I indulge a deep secret guilty pleasure of also playing LOTS of funk, jazz funk and blues. I like everything from Les Claypool to Marcus Miller to Victor Wooden to Joe Jackson to Flea. ~~~I also DIG this channel. I am no bass God, but I have a 4 string Ibenez 90's rock bass and also an Ibenez active pickup 5 string bass. Addicted to playing to Rhonda Smith as well. ~~~~~Thank you for your lessons and wisdom here.
I love the intro music!!! As usual, you have an approach that I've never seen or thought of before that makes so much sense!!! I'm always amazed that you never express concern that what notes are being played! Brilliant as usual! Thank you so much for sharing your gifts and knowledge!!!
I’ve watched the video again and I can say, that to me , it’s by far the best lesson on how to build a solo that I have ever seen. Thank you so much for your Generosity and for sharing your Rich❤ talent, Rich.
Daalu Rich! I’ve struggled and tried to hide from doing a solo. I rather hidebehind the vocalist…can’t; I’m 6’2. You could create a complete course on soloing, I’m sure no one would be mad. May Chukwu grant you peace! I’m sure Mama Brown is watching and bobbing her head to her baby boy jamming!☺️
Thank you so much for the donation and the kind words, my brother. Mom was always happy to let my brother and me know how proud she was of us both. She's definitely grooving right along with us. 🙏🏾❤️
Hi, it is great to join this channel! After 30 years of playing guitar... I got my first bass ever (Yamaha TRBX505). I already viewed many videos and it gives a complement of what I knew about the theory but also a new point of view of triads, modes and ... the fret board! Thank You Rich!
Yes indeed, such a pleasure to learn bass guitar from you, your style of teaching is inviting, inspirational, just plain and simple instruction, you always seem to me to get to the point(s) as your teaching, l like the fact that you demonstrate and show what your doing at the same time, there are some who teach on RUclips, guitar or bass that they just lose me in long, boring explanations of what there trying to get across- you do the opposite, Thanks Much for your great teaching on bass guitar, you are a master of your craft, and l too like the intro music at the beginning of your video, the solo that your playing when you start to teach this lesson is Sho’nuff Funky! Keep up the good work!!!!
This video has helped me greatly! Last summer I got a bass as a gift, but I stopped playing 2 months later because life. Now I'm picking it back up, just re-learned the fretboard and even though I'm not ready for soloing yet, you helped me understand the method behind it. Thanks a bunch man!
I love this approach! I struggle with solos, that very anxiety you mention at the beginning, when I know it’s coming. I often just pre-plan my solos, which isn’t very satisfying and a little unoriginal for the rest of my band. I know a lot of scales, but it always feels like so many notes and I don’t know where to start and end up over playing. I love limiting it to just two notes above and below to start, then forced to just creative with that. Can’t wait to give this a try live! Thank you so much!
Please accept my sincerest condolences. I'm so sorry for your loss. Lost my dad last year. It took some time to adjust, I totally understand you taking time off. It does get better but takes time as I'm sure you're realizing. Grateful for you and this channel. I am so glad you're back. Your teaching style is uniquely your own and it's sooooooo chill. I love it! All the best to you.
Really cool video and soloing idea. As someone that has never felt great about their soloing this will definitely become part of my practice routine. As always, thanks Rich
Thanks so much for this. Just what I needed to take the next step. Not only does this open doors from a creativity perspective, but it also bridges the gap between things I already know.
Ahhhh so happy these are back! Thank you for all the great content!...... AHHH LOVED IT! Hit me with that spot light imma solo so good now, bartender will beg me and the band to come back! Mr. Brown, you're great bass player, but you're a fantastic teacher!
LOVE this lesson brother Rich. Sharing far and wide as well as internalizing it myself. Thank you for the treasure trove of methodologies and (more importantly) mind sets around exploration and music making. You my friend, are my North star...
That's a very cool and helpful approach for building solo phrases, thank you. Never been the soloing guy, but now after more than 40 years of playing I have one song where a bass solo was needed and I've found it in an almost identical way. It's over a chord progression and I also divided it into cells (though I had no idea they were cells ;-) and the use of some 'binding' notes between the chords helped in keeping it simple and another benefit was, that the starting note of the new chords never were the roots, but thirds or sevens. Good to see I wasn't soooo wrong with my approach though watching your video a few months ago would definitely saved time 🙂 All the best and lots of good wishes
Thanks Rich, the best bass mentor on social media. Life will try us everyday but we've got to push forward. I learn a lot from just watching and absorbing.
Hey Rich! Great Love is being able and willing to share something that you really LOVE with others. I feel'ya. Just wanted to let you know that when my Platinum drops, which it will soon... Hey Hey Hey, it could happen!
