3 Steps to Killer Bass Fills (for Beginners)

Creating bass fills doesn’t have to be that hard - here’s a simple 3 step process you can use without mega chops or theory skills.
Extended Jam Tracks:
Major - / beginner-bass-fills-ma...
Minor - / beginner-bass-fills-mi...
Step 1 is to pick a rhythm. Because even if the notes in your fill are garbage, if you really sell the rhythm, it’ll still kinda work. I’ll explain where fills usually go in a song, how long they can last, and how to come up with a rhythm to fill the space.
Also Phil Collins will appear randomly. Be warned.
Step 2 is to pick a shape. Bass shapes are the simplest way to pick notes for a fill or bass line, so we’ll walk through 3 different shapes you can use on different types of chords.
I explain bass shapes fully in this video if you want to dig in more: • 5 Easy “Shapes” for Ki...
Step 3 is to stick the rhythm and the shape together. I’ll show you how to do that, and we’ll try a bunch of different fills together, so by the end of the video you’re ready to create your own bass fills, no problem.
Pretty awesome, right? Click here to subscribe so you don’t miss more awesomeness: yeah.bassbuzz....

Can you do a part 2 of some of those more complicated fills? Loved the video but want to get more in depth.
Some Phil Lesh breakdowns?
The one in Liar by Queen by John Deacon!
Probably RHCP - Around the World
BassBuzz “Killing Floor” blues style
Weird notes with good rhythm is basically jazz
... I hear Jaco ;)
nah nah, good notes with good rythm my man
Is it bad that I thought that was the best fill
Some of it sounded like Snarky Puppy
i just hear prog metal
Brilliant Josh, I'm just going onto Module 8 of Beginer to Badass on Bass Buzz. Six weeks ago I would not have known what you were talking about, now I understood everything. Just amazing. I'm just getting tae grips with syncopation. This fit's right in. thanks Josh.
Jamie Speirs I’m a B2B graduate! (Nov-Dec 30 days) and I can’t say enough good about the class! Go get ‘em!
The best bass lessons ever :)
Thanks to you I can play what I want, not only what I learned from Gutar Pro or YT. You're great :)
Thanks Emil!
This was a great video! I will watch it again, I've been struggling with figuring out how to come up with fills! Thanks!
You're welcome Stephanie!
Your channel is really helpful and I haven’t even gotten my bass yet, taking a while for it to ship😕 but it’ll be well worth the wait!
I’ve also been drumming for a little bit as well and it’s helpful when you relate it to the drums because the two are related and work together in songs.
Hope you get your bass soon! :)
me:
my brain: " reh guhguhguhguh uh!"
nice one josh! 🤘
i realize that I really like your videos because I totally relate with noob josh lol
I wish there was a teacher like you for guitar and piano too
How does this channel only have 250k subs
That sounds nice for a squier
Is that a Bela Fleck tshirt ?
Thanks for all your guidance and tips! a question: Sometimes I see your left hand wrist and quite a sharp angle. Is it a good idea to play like that? I was told its bad because of potential damage to the tendons.
What is the name on your t-shirt? Béla Fl... Who is it?
This! ruclips.net/video/wC1N7rkKkfg/видео.html
I feel like that backing track was in the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack
Problems for beginner bass players: exist
BassBuzz: SHAPES
I like shapes but idk. Idk the notes. I have no clue what he means when he says ok kids go on the b note then your going to go onto the f and then c#. If he said ok go from the 4th fret on the A string to the 7th fret on the d string to the 5th fret on the e string.
@@TheHeck69 He has a video about the money notes, that could help you out.
@@TheHeck69 The sooner you learn the notes on the fretboard, the better. Little by little it becomes innate and you don't have to think about it.
@@F.Castle oh yush. I shall check it out.
@Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication okie dokie. Much appreciated
Don’t even have a bass yet but I gotta study
I vibe with Noob Josh.
The homies love Noob Josh.
Bro the homies *are* noob josh
Your channel is definitely very useful, with a great sense of humor but before anything, I really love how you explain all with clear and easy to understand schematics. Thank you for that, never change a thing
Thanks Ety!
@@BassBuzz My pleasure ! I know music isn't about reading but for visual learners like me, that makes a HUGE difference. 🙏
Thank you Josh, you're a true fill-anthropist!
HAHA thanks Matteo. :P
Did somebody say Phil? * proceeds to listen to in the air tonight while watching Dr Phil bash pedestrians *
Hilarious
You’ve inspired me to play bass thanks a lot
That's awesome Julian!
Nice.
I was worried to buy a bass and regret it wishing I had bought a guitar instead, but it's been 1 year since I bought my bass and I haven't regretted it even a bit
@@pavese1379 Great!! I wanted to play the bass because not many people wants to do so. Everyone wants a guitar generally.
Who's your inspiration btw?
This guy? Really? Lol
I haven't commented on any of your videos so far, Josh, but I feel I need to tell you: you are the most amazing bass teacher on youtube. I started playing bass half a year ago, and I improved my skills to a whole new level, thanks to your fantastic explanations and teaching. Thank you for all your lessons mate! Cheers from Hungary!🤙
Thank you so much!
I play Bass for many years and I don't know why the fill I use depends on major or minor chords by the guitar. And at this point I am too afraid to ask.
Newb Josh is nervous and his socks are too loose.
If y’all want to binge on bass fills, you should research
1) Turn arounds
2) 2-5-1’s
3) Leading tones
Thanks for the videos! Cheers!
can you name some popular songs w the 2-5-1 going on? i am just now encountering this progression ...
@@jimdiskin3760 Like top 40 songs? Not 100% sure, 2-5-1’s are most common in jazz tunes from the early 20th century (Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, etc.). Some good songs to start with though are Autumn Leaves, Take the A Train, and All The Things You are. Very good analysis videos of all those songs on RUclips. Hope this helps!
Josh I've played bass for 50 years , I'm losing dexterity in my hands at 63 , so a pick it is my friend , take care , stay safe , God Bless.
Thanks Mark, you too, hope you're doing well!
Hello again, Mark. Question: Do you ever get cramps in your hand between the index and thumb when using a pick? I assume you used to be a finger player in the past (how long since you switched?). I'm 48 and have been playing for 35 years and my hand will cramp up sometimes when using a pick, thus I play fingerstyle...(plus Davie says it's illegal). If I ever have dexterity issues I would be screwed! Thanks and stay safe
I see your comments on heaps of videos I watch too! You have great taste, hopefully I’ll be playing bass for as long as you!
@@bassclefconnoisseur..... The answer to your issue with cramps is.... you are Mineral deficient, like about 97 percent of the US population.... go to a "Health Food" Store (but NOT someplace like "GNC" or whatever) or go On-Line and search for Concentrace Minerals (from Great Salt, Utah).... it's approximately $24.00 for an 8oz. bottle.... it will do you wonders for your finger cramps and Many other "issues" that you may not even be aware of.
I use to get leg & hand/finger cramps, about 28 years ago... someone else told me about the minerals. I have not had Any cramping at all now in almost 28 years.... since I started putting Concentrace Minerals in all my drinking water, Daily. Here is the direct link to that particular product on the Mfgr's website in Utah....www.traceminerals.com/product/concentrace-trace-mineral-drop - their showing the "suggested mfgr's retail price" at $34.97 for the 8oz bottle, but it's always cheaper in the Health Food stores.
Also, if you go on-line to this link... www.vitacost.com/trace-minerals-research-trace-mineral-drops-concentrace-8-fl-oz-4 - you can get the same Concentrace "Trace Mineral Drops" in the 8oz bottle for $22.88. I know it sounds a little bit spendy, but it will do wonders for you.... I take a full measured Teaspoon mixed in with my drinking water... about 3/4ths of a gallon, every day. They have many different products with minerals.... "Trace Mineral Drops" is the one you need.
@@Romans--bo7br Thanks brother! I will definitely check out the links. Very kind of you to reply with such detail...and I'm sure you are 100% correct. I am a flooring journeyman so I'm working with my hands everyday and never really have any problems except when I try to hold a pick for extended periods...so I don't (unless the song calls for it but don't tell Davie 504). I started out playing with a pick but quickly went to fingerstyle, etc., and that was decades ago! Thanks again and stay safe out there!
Keep trying, Noob Josh! You'll get it one day!
He sure hopes so. He never seems to improve after all these lessons though...
@@BassBuzz He has to practice too. Just watching YouToop tutorials gets you nowhere.
READ the title. It is a video for beginners! Have you even seen any of his other videos? Do you know what an incredible musician he really is? Stupid no talent morons always wanting to cut somebody down.
Thanx a lot. As an advanced bassplayer with some exprience on stage I really like your videos. Clearly structured, motivating, straight effort and a well balanced learning-curve.
Like! :)
Best regards from Germany.
Thank you sir you are now my new mentor 🙂❤️☝️💪
Seriously considering buying your Bassbuzz education pack dude. Sense of humor is key.
Same here. And if I say that although I am not a native english speaker, that means a lot ! Just wondering if the digital version consists of streaming or if we can download all content for offline watching
toad0720 I’m a graduate of the class. Do it! It’s worth Every. Single. Penny.
@@hannahwalker7221 Really ? How cool ! Does it works like a kind of «school career» ?
Ety Ramone I don’t know what that is, but in Beginner to Badass Josh shows you how to put your gear on, and immediately starts you playing actual bass lines! When you are finished with the course you can consider yourself Intermediate and ready to be an asset to any jam session! I love it!
Yeah, it was his personality and how easily he breaks things down that got me. Definitely buying it too
BassBuzz > Scott's Bass Lessons
I just got the "bass phil". I'm not proud of myself
Bass fills - does compute. Dang, this cannot be simpler. I just picked up bass again after almost 15 years since last time I played it (apparently it's not a bicycle, and you can forget how to play it), and BassBuzz videos help me A LOT to get back on track. Thanks Josh!
You're welcome Paweł!
Guitarists looking at the thumbnail: THAT'S A POWER CHORD SHAPE!
As a brand new bassist, your videos are making the journey incredibly easier and fun. Thank you good sir!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for your "shapes" teachings. I've been playing for 42 years and my slap technique is so advanced everyone assumes I know a bunch of theory, but I just think in shapes. You've given me a name for what I do and given me a bunch of new ideas. Thanks so much.
Right notes, weird rhythm: haha, that's stupid.
Weird notes, right rhythm: *nods* mm, jazz.
I fill good (nana nana nana na)
I knew that I would.
:P
you forgot the 'now' ...
I’ve been playing bass for a couple years now. I’ve taught myself how to read and sight read sheet music for bass. But this video, this is so good. Thank you so much for your hard work on this channel!
When my husband, guitarist for 50 years leaves his room to come to me, bass player of 1 year, just to tell me with a bit of wonder in his voice that it "sounds really good", I feel like YOU should get Teacher of the Year (or maybe Decade or Century) Award!!
That's great Cindy! You can have the award though. :)
You are a very effective teacher! Thank you for posting these creative and insightful lessons. I have struggled to progress on bass for years and I learn so much from your videos. Great communication style! Also love the bass fill / bass Phil reference at the end!!
What's Phil full name or what band is he from?
I was enjoying this video until it ended 😢
Your contents are amazingly created.. The humour here and there takes the pressure away.. Gut gemacht 👌🏾
Your videos are amazing, easy to understand and funny, I have learned a lot even without a bass lol (hope get my fist bass in a few weeks :P)
You deserve more and thanks you BassBuzz 🤜💥🤛
Thanks Rubén, hope your bass comes soon!
0:56 but this fill is actually fire
Really glad I finally picked up a bass. Always wanted one since a kid and spent my whole paycheck on a squire and rumble amp bundle and roughed it out for that week.. your videos make it so much easier and made that struggle for a week worth it. Thank you bro
Congrats on your bass!
5:30 I guess you know you're no longer a beginner when you see this shape and go "wait, B isn't the 7th of D. That would be the 6th," and only later realize that was the fret number.
Just found you guys, amazing !!, don’t stop Josh!! I am going through chemotherapy and needed a hobbie and I just found it!!.....just gotta get me a bass.... sr300 e. Going shopping now
How is everything?
31 year bass player here. Lesson 101. If you are a bassist, always speak in bass player language. Like da da googa boo. Another is da du'n doo. A little more advanced is da dada da dada da da da doo n doo (this one is a lick from Iron Maiden's cover of Women in Uniform in the middle section that follows the guitars).
Like da do do do da da da da?
Stellar lesson Josh!
Thanks Ted, hope you're doing well! Anybody reading this, check out Ted's channel, he's an amazing bassist! ruclips.net/user/TedTalksBassvideos
Fills basically mean the badass part of the song
a very easy little fill that sounds pretty cool is ; you play the root note then the fifth and slide two frets up before playing the octave of the rootnote ;)
**Man, I haven't played in like 20yrs. Never took a lesson just 4chord Punk Rock. But with Age comes "would've Could've Should've"! Looking forward to going burning thru all your vids! Thanx Man!!! S.O.S. (HELP!) The TPOS Bass I got online is no good. I can't afford a new bass and BEGINNER TO BADASS COURSE either! Any ideas??? Anyone???
All the tutorials of fills be like: just figure it out!
But hey, here I have a solid foundation to start that process!
I don't think improvisation is something easy to teach, because it is just what it is
Thanks for the great video!
Here is a tip - communicate with the drummer, because when both of you fill at the same time, it benefits neither of you. It's not a bad idea to take turns, remember - someone has to keep the rythm!
I'd love to own a bass guitar one day and learn how to play it like you do.. You've inspired me a lot.. I'm from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe 🇿🇼
I'm a beginner to moderate amateur guitar player and watching bass videos like this great bass video has really given me some material to work with and given me some great playing ideas etc... thx!
Bela Fleck shirt +10pts
Woah! Yu're so helpful!!
Freankin' awesome and enjoyable!!!
Thank you so much Josh, for real!!!!
Thank you Francesco!
Thank you for this lesson. May I ask you why you the 5th and the 6th work well for Major vs 3d and 7th for Minor ?
dude i appreciate you so much brother i learned a lot of stuff from you i’m a guitarist trying to learn bass God bless you
Чувак, ты крут...но...меньше разговаривай, а больше показывай...тем более, что я по английски не понимаю...если заведешь себе переводчика, как например Скот бас, то у тебя будет огромное количество подписчиков в России
0:43 sounds like John Entwistle 😂
I like trying to play the transition melodies by ear, as a bass beginner, it gives more ideas of what I should play, and it is also fun to find out how to play 'em 😅
This is great, thanks! I was trying to learn some Motown songs by ear and since I now know these triangle shapes I’ve been able to figure them out so much easier! 🙏🙌🏻✊🏻
ROFL, love your vids ... informative yet hilarious. Noob Josh for president. 🤘
THis video completely sold me on my intuitive decision to switch from learning guitar to bass. I've played guitar for 4 years, and never really loved it.. fell in love with the bass the first time i picked it up.
Laughed my ass off watching this; thank you for being hilarious and chill! subscribed.
Glad you're loving the bass!
Guys not to get in to much what's going on in my world right I can tell you if you are thinking about getting his system do it! It works no Bs you learn easily it also fun. I've tried many systems many drummer systems and guitar but this kickass as. Trust me I have some crazy life things going on. It works DO IT! GIVE IT A TRY TODAY!!!!!!
Honestly probably one of the most easy to follow and understand bass fill videos I’ve ever watched! Thank you!

Shouldn’t the Major triangle diagram on screen be Root, 5 & 6 (not 7)?
Those are fret numbers not scale degrees. :)

You’re lessons are very helpful for me (beginner) Im A New Subscriber🙌🏼🎸!! Love You’re Vids :))
Thanks Kay!
I love the tone of your bass! How are you recording that tone (direct, mic'd, shaped EQ/flat EQ, etc.)? Just curious and sorry if you've already answered this.
As a kid I tried to play cello, lugging that huge thing around was such a pain in the a$$, so I gave it up..... years later I watched Jaws again. Yup. Found a bass for 40$ in a pawn shop and that was it:) love those deep tones and chill funk bass lines. Oh yeah..... dope baby.... just chillin with the bass helps a high energy person to relax. Soothing to the soul:)
I’m very happy to know that I’ve been doing this already with no knowledge of theory, I’ve just been doing it all by ear. I just called it using a box shape haha. Trying to move it around a little
Tip: filling with root ,fifth octave. If you learn the technique of pressure rolling good you can play root octave fifth by pressure rolling from octave to fifth and play fills fast
Very good my friend...are we? 😆😆😆😆:-) and thanks from Caracas Venezuela...👏👏👏
Hey! C'mon, Josh! You didn't blabber! Don't exaggerate! I mean, like, c'mon!
I bought the course and I highly recommend it. It's fun and very informative! Josh, do you make all of this by yourself?
Somebody else built the bass. :P

Perfect timing.
My new G&L JB2 Tribute bass turned up today by courier (4 days late - what the hey…
Im really glad this came up in my suggestions, Ive been playing guitar for almost 15 years and I just got my 1st bass a few days ago. Just subbed.
Random comment: I like having my bass slightly out of tune cause the sound is more pleasing to my ears than if it’s in perfect tune
I’m beginner enough still, and originally a drummer, so I love your “percussive” fill theme mentality 👍
I like doing hammer one and pull offs with the 2,3 and 4 above the octave; resolving into the next chord.
Believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, and you will be saved..Be baptized and repent of your sins. Repent simply means to turn away from your sins. God loves you and so do I.
I was in a blue band and we had a slightly fusion jam, on stage our harmonica player, just stopped and yelled "take it Mr. Bassman" to me. I had no idea it was happening and I just froze.
very good information bro but my question is, WHAT UP WITH THE BANANA TAT?
Helping us a lot! Thank you so much! Those triangle shapes for Major and Minor chords were the best!
Solid advice, a Bela Fleck tshirt, and some Phil Lesh love!! Home run! I'll be back!
The best way to get jobs is to avoid filling notes altogether. If you keep up adding all those random weird filling notes you may join the many guitarists who are now delivering pizzas.
Please i the way you teach. Please i want to learn to play bass guitar and I want to learn from you. What should I do to start learning? I don't know anything. So please help me. Thank you
I bet you can't do any Primus song like Jilly's on Smack, Lacquer Head, My name is Mud
Thanks for the vid really expands on a subject that is never really explained in detail
Badass Bela shirt (and lesson). Ever thought of doing a bluegrass bass lesson? You'll get 10s of views.
Beginner question: is he using his pinky for both the fifth and the octave notes?
I stopped watching that UK guy with the pinky ring, because of his different characters he played to be funny.
The bass runs in CCR’s “Born on the Bayou” is what made me want to learn to play bass.
