Good subject Dave! Like you mention, if you deal with brand new QH implements, it most likely will work. But even then, it appears some implements known as QH ready may not fit, from what I have seen in many YT videos. Not enough clearance to insert the pins/bolt like you had. I don't understand why the QH are made so tight. Like you did, I replace the hairpins by a linch pins or a D-clip. You used the milling to remove that 1/2" material. A portable bandsaw is also perfect to remove most of it and finishing with the milling. Thanks Dave for sharing those modifications. Hope you are doing well. Glad to see more video from you!

I tend to not agree with that. pats system has a lot of flaw to it as well. you lose adjustability at the top link for one. the bar interferes with pto shafts at times so that has to be removed and then you have other obvious issues. so no I'd not say pats is better just another option. once you have your quick hitch set up its a breeze and way better than the Pats system in my opinion.

Far easier to buy the Agri-Supply QH. It comes with the extended top hook. Costs about the same as HF. Easily one of the best mods you can do to a tractor. Thanks for posting!

If you have a lot of slop in your top link caused by a loose fit in the hook your box blade with rippers will be impossible to control. If you are just dragging dirt or gravel not using the rippers it's not too bad.
At 2:35 when you talk about the modification your removing 1/2 an inch but you could add 1/2 an inch on the other side to give it some strength to the hook? Nice mod and good explanation my friend.
I'm removing a 1/2 inch from one side and adding it to the other side so that it creates a larger space for the bolts or pins that hold the hook to the quick attach. on some implements there is a clearance issue. like on my brush hog the bolt heads hit and so the quick hitch would not work. since I shaved off a 1/2 inch and then added a 1/2 that moved the bolt holes further away and also kept the measurement of the hook the same as the original measurement to accommodate the pin with a bushing found on quick hitch ready implements. hope that is clearer than mud. lol haha oh and good to see you Mr Teddy Bear! love ya brother!

yeah I normally drill out the paint to make it fit a bit easier. I must have already did this one. I have been through three or four of these HF QH's. lol
Here are some helpful tips for your HFQH. Keep in mind that it's made in China and also keep in mind that the CAT 1, 2, 3 etc. "standards" allow for a wide variation in implement pin width and centerline height of the third pin. So here is my story with the HFQH. First, the top hook is too close the the QH frame and needs to be extended by 1" to 1-1/4" which is accomplished by welding a block to the back of the hook and redrilling the holes. There are aftermarket ones available for purchase for around $30 if you aren't handy in the fabrication department. Second, the supplied pins that hook the QH to the draft arms are grossly undersized...by 0.100" to be exact. This will cause excessive wear on the swivelly balls of the draft arms and provide a lot of unnecessary slop to the assembly. I bought a set of CAT 1 lower link pins at Farm & Fleet and re-made the lower pins using the purchased ones as a starting point. A little lathe work and fabrication/welding will do the trick. You will also have to drill out the holes in the QH to 57/64" to accommodate the new pins. Third, you need to use bushings on the lower pins of your implement to bring the O.D. of the pins from 7/8" to around 1-7/16" so they fit snugly in the lower hooks of the QH. You have to do this with ANY QH you use, Land Pride, iMatch, SpeeCo, Lee Agra, etc.. I made such modifications to my HFQH and it has served me well for over 3 years with no other issues. Also, in order to keep the "quick" in the QH, you need to adjust your implements to match one setting on the QH...this is only a concern if you use (usually) older implements from a variety of manufacturers as I stated before, the "standards" for 3PH's are very loose at best and allowed manufacturers MUCH leeway in their designs.
You know, this is probably the third or fourth video I've seen where they've had to modify the top hook because the bolts are in the way. Has anyone told Harbor Freight? Why do they make them that way if it's such an issue?
Ha.. The holes in the hook were 1/2", but the holes in the hitch were metric smaller 12mm.. Ha..Ha.. I did the same thing.. :) They must have bought that hook from the USA.. I had to drill the holes in the bracket out to get rid of that slop.. But, if that was a 1/2" drill bit that you showed drilling through the bracket,, mine were surely smaller than yours.. My bet is that you already drilled them in the video.. My kodiak box blade, there was no way to hook the pin that was already there.. I would have had to add some 1" thick solid stock to the back of the hook.. But, I could use a 3/4 pin through the top hole that was 18" higher than the bottom pins.. But, I had to cut some length off of the rear part of the hook that you machined down to get it between the factory pin and the 3/4 pin that went above it.. I was using the top pins like you would expect to.. But, I raised it 1/2" when welding it up to get a 15" and 18", rather than 15-1/2 and 18-1/2.. I think you ran into the same problem.. When you had to raise your hook past the last bolt hole to bottom it out.. I welded the bottom up to match it. I came to the same conclusion.. The manufacturers are not yet paying close attention to the Quick Hitch setup.. I doubt very seriously that anyone's quick hitch really works on their implements.. Too many of them look like HF Clones.. I made my hook fit my Box Blade perfect.. Some thousandths of extra space.. picking it up from a level surface, works fantastic 100% of the time.. Pick it up from something not level, even if the tractor is "about" the same,, you see some issues, but, once you get it picked up and give it a shake or two, the hold down flat bar snaps into place.. That part should work for any implement of the same class.. And, I am ready to make top hooks for anything else that aggravates me.. Ha..Ha.... Once I get a few more implements, if I can see that a mod to each implement will fit one standard hook setup, back to the drawing board and I'll change the implements.. Guess it is going to be a longer project than I first though.. :).. That's Ok though.. I like perfecting things.. I can see you do too.. Just wasn't a full solution there for everything yet.. Thanks for the Video.. I had the feeling one like this was coming. Cheers! I still have not had time to post mine.. I listen to videos while I work,, stop, click watch/rewind, and go back to my business on some.. I knew what I was listening to on yours.. Cheers Dave.. Keep up the good work.. My benchtop 7x14 lathe and matching mill are still sitting,, waiting on me to get some time to play with them.. :)
for sure you are 100% correct. I did move my bottom pieces up a tad similar to your design. so far its working out ok but I have not hooked up to every implement yet so I may find it wont work. that extra hole in the hook is the only way I can use my lienbach implements as they are non quick hitch very old heavy implements which I love to much to replace. yes you are correct I had predrilled those holes and just went through the paces for the sake of video demonstration since some folks need more visual myself included. unless of course I know my way around the situation like these quick hitches which sometimes can be a pain as you well know. look forward to your up coming videos. thanks for dropping by I was thinking of you when I planned this video out. you are responsible for prompting this one for sure. I needed that push so thanks.
@@daveknowshow Thank you.. At least I know, if I buy something else,, the Box blade is dead on, and, if the next implement doesn't work right, I'll start with another top hook and go from there.. Ha.. Not changing anything on this one.. :).. Thanks for the great vids.. On some office projects for the next couple of weeks, then, have lots of outside projects to get things open for the season.. Guess it's another video I will post down the road.. Shucks.. Might list that one and just say, will be updated later.. Cheers..

They turned out great, but, when I was done, I pulled them to put the backhoe back on and forgot to do one.. But, when I get done with the office work, a day or two on the backhoe and then, the box blade goes back on to dress the place up for a day or two... The finished product on the QH.. I been thinking about building one. I bent one up so bad it had to be replaced. of course had I built it myself it may have been to strong and rather than it bend and fail I may have tore the rear out the tractor. which would have been a really expensive fix. so instead I go with the HF as the weak link to fail rather than break the tractor or implement.

Also, in order to keep the "quick" in the QH, you need to adjust your implements to match one setting on the QH...this is only a concern if you use (usually) older implements from a variety of manufacturers as I stated before, the "standards" for 3PH's are very loose at best and allowed manufacturers MUCH leeway in their designs.
yeah I done most all these mods and a few more I will do an update to this video soon
You know, this is probably the third or fourth video I've seen where they've had to modify the top hook because the bolts are in the way. Has anyone told Harbor Freight? Why do they make them that way if it's such an issue?
yes I have reported this to them but seems like they don't care to fix the issue. it could easily be fixed.
Dave I have a couple questions to ask you. Can I send you a video question?
you sure can
Ha.. The holes in the hook were 1/2", but the holes in the hitch were metric smaller 12mm.. Ha..Ha.. I did the same thing.. :)
They must have bought that hook from the USA..
Cheers..
@@daveknowshow I went ahead a posted the video public and put a card at the end linking to this video for more details about the mods.. You did a much better job on the video overall.. I just did the end results on mine, until I have time to edit and post it all together.. Thanks for the inspiration.. Would have done a video on the indicators.. They turned out great, but, when I was done, I pulled them to put the backhoe back on and forgot to do one.. But, when I get done with the office work, a day or two on the backhoe and then, the box blade goes back on to dress the place up for a day or two... The finished product on the QH.. The top hook really looks funky, but, works great.. Cheers..

@@MarkThomas123 very cool I will look forward to the next video. take your time making videos youtube can get addictive and making videos can get over whelming. just enjoy it. that's what I do. I try not to make to many videos in fact I likely don't make enough.
With your know how I’m surprised you didn’t just make your own hitch
I been thinking about building one. I bent one up so bad it had to be replaced. of course had I built it myself it may have been to strong and rather than it bend and fail I may have tore the rear out the tractor. which would have been a really expensive fix. so instead I go with the HF as the weak link to fail rather than break the tractor or implement.
I bought a new hook that extends out from the hitch more
I started to get one myself but it lacked enough space to add a third hole which I needed for some of the older implements.
@@daveknowshow yes, I saw the one you fabricated. Lots of great info! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video Dave... I found this gem on one of the tractor forums. This hook solves the issue with the HF quick hitch hook not fitting quite right. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OKWIIOY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
excellent! yes they sell a hook at agri supply as well.
That hook is waaay too deep, and not spread out enough
these quick hitches can be a lot of trouble. after all the modifying I have done to make this thing work better it still fails at times. yesterday I brought home an implement to test and make a video about and it would not fit this quick hitch. well last night I mounted the quick hitch up on the milling machine. lol that was a sight to behold! needless to say I cut a bunch of metal off this thing and reconfigured a few part. hopefully by monday this thing will fit this implement as well as the ones it currently fits. I'm about sick of quick hitches! lol ha ha all I can say is I'm glad its just a cheap harbor freight quick hitch because if I had paid 3-4 or 5 hundred bucks for a quick hitch and had to do all these mods to make it work with all the implements I would be pissed! lol ha ha I got to laugh ! yes you are right the top hook is not designed very well at all.
Here is the quick fix for your quick hitch.
