The Mini version is such a beautiful piece of "nostalgia tech", lots of details and yet actually usable as a good quality FM radio/BT speaker, not just for show. Loved it!
4:20 I enjoy that they made the peels blue, making them obvious to take off. WAY too many manufacturers use clear plastic and end-users end up overheating their products as they're not designed to be used with the plastic!

I'm glad that you've you got a product that you're happy to enjoy and recommend. That must feel nice after the last few duds that you couldn't recommend. I'm actually keen to get one of these because like you say it makes a cool bluetooth speaker.
That actualy has all the functionality or at least a decent tape drive with Dolby or illegitimate noise reduction compatible with Dolby. Having a big box of toy knobs is not something I have a particular need for no matter how cool it looks.
It's nice to see a company putting that much attention to detail and yet still making a quality product, usually quality is the first thing that gets sacrificed. These are not something I would be interested in myself but I can see it being popular with a lot of people. Let's hope a few other companies go down the same path as I can see many people wanting an old looking radio for example but with new modern features and would be willing to pay for that if the quality was there.
The box that they come in...I LOVE IT. That's how all of that stuff looked. My Dad still has his Pioneer tape deck box in the rafters. Big blue pioneer logo. They made those boxes to last and be re-used. Some of them have plastic knobs and a string that you wrap around to keep them shut.
Woudn't it be amazing, if the little cassete was in fact some sort of SD card adapter? But I guess it would make it way more expensive. Still super cool thing!
The absolute chad move would've been to make it an actual microcassette player, but I get the feeling that it would've been way too niche of a product if they did that.
Probably no one make this micro cassete player mechanisms more... BUT, if they plan to launch a bunch of these scaled down versions, they maybe have the volume needed to reopen a line of production for these things... That would be amazing
Awesome video. Brings back memories to this former Break dancer from back in the early eighties. Back then no sitting on our asses for hours wasting time on a ridiculous expensive cel ph. .. Really cool to see that they didn't just slap a 'retro' shell on some standard BT speaker guts, but actually went the extra distance to make it literally work as close to the original at those small scales. Not having working VU meters is of course a bit of a loss. Would have been great to see those working too.
YES FINALLY... I have searched for a good quality replica boombox for so long... There are so much junk retro boomboxes and I always wondered, why no one makes a decent one as a nice sounding bluetooth speaker.
I received mine a while back, and was amazed at the quality of the devices. Glad you had the guts to explore inside, I would have been petrified to do so! I originally bought my set for the Micro, as it works well with my Sixth Scale collection, but the Mini has become my favourite bonus from this purchase, the sound quality is just astounding!
I was really impressed with the Bluetooth range on the M90 Mini as well. I do the bulk of my music listening on a vintage stereo in my basement. I have an MEE transmitter plugged into it the receiver and I can carry the M90 quite a ways with no break in the signal. I can easily take it up two flights of stairs or out in my backyard with no problem.
I liked seeing the whole family of them together, pity the VU meter's didn't move and were backlit as well. I purchased this small radio its a HRD 701 , it gets AM,FM shortwave and weatherband although of no use down under. for it's very small speaker it sounds way bigger than you would think. I saw someone review it and went and purchased one myself. it also is a bluetooth and SD card play capacity as well.
I´m not really a boombox guy but those devices really look amazing. However personally i prefer a bluetooth speaker that do not make weird noises when turning it on, off, pair etc.

Fantastic review Mat! I received my Mini and Micro about 3 weeks ago, and I have been listening to the Mini constantly throughout the day! They are great devices, made with very good quality, and look fantastic. My only small issue, is that when you use the Bluetooth function, about a second of the songs get cut off. I believe this to be a software issue that might possibly be fixed in the future via an update. Overall, quite impressive devices from New Wave Toys!
Great video and device. The only thing I don’t like is the oversize silver caps in the main speakers, that sort of spoils the look a little for me, also, agree, if the VU meters actually worked I would of made it a must buy.

I bought the complete kit, the blue speaker and the black speaker mini and 2 of the micro on Kickstarter. I am not disappointed. I learned how to complete Dragons lair when I was 15 at Camber Sands. I watched someone play it who could also finish it. @@jubuttib It’s scary how good the new MBP sounds. It’s still not like a headphone, but it’s so much better than so many other laptops I’ve had. Combine with leaving the fans off, and it’s amazing for basic content consumption to say nothing of trying to do focused work.

For what its probably using, the microphone isnt too bad. Its just limited by the bluetooth's earphone standard that is absolutely awful at ~8 or ~11 KHz that pretty much most devices use.
A real breath of fresh air after the craptastic LED spectrum analyzers from a week or two ago. Pretty amazed by the apparent sound quality! Way better than I was expecting for both the units.
I still remember the smell of the Dragon's lair arcade game.. it had a different scent ! I think it was all the plastic or vinyl on it . Very enchanting game for an 8 year old boy - and I was able to work with Don Bluth years later ! Very nice chap - he was 'anti-disney' as he was totally railroaded by them and they stole a bunch of his concepts.
@@fixman88 Many people are upset at current Disney for reasons I'm sure you're aware of. But Disney has ALWAYS been a company of S***Bags. My Wife is a Director of Animation at FOX Studios. Love watching your videos especially when you get a non-working gadget working. Oh, you must have a huge attic to store all bits & pieces. Keep making the videos 👍
this is how to do it right for copy the look, nowadays full ranger speaker and power amp just so efficient and small at same time, and those all in one bt speaker board so many you can buy, really easy to modify, if you can find a old good looking boombox ,thats good fun little diy project, turn your old broken boombox to a good sounding with modern function classic boombox looking bt speaker, even with tape player function.
A tip to minimize background noise/hiss when in bluetooth mode... your bluetooth device can control the volume of your mini m90 boombox - with this in mind set the volume of your bluetooth device (iphone for example) to maximum/highest level. then increase the volume of your m90 boombox to desired level - this will reduce the noise output as you are reducing the sound produced by the m90 while maximizing the sound from the bluetooth device.
Yep, WANT! Probably wont ever get my paws on one now, but still, I can watch this over and over and dream. Dying to know what the next mini model booms in the line up might be. As this was a Kickstarter affair, (yes, I've berated myself rather a lot for not knowing about it, as I'd have SO backed it!) I'm fairly sure sales of these have already made Newwave realize this IS a total winner, thus they'll hopefully get making and announcing the next classics they have plans for asap. While it took a full two years to perfect this M90, I'm flipping impressed it took only that long, as quite frankly given the detail and quality that's pretty astounding from drawing to actual physical working item. I'd bet my house that Techmoan WILL be purchasing each model of them that make it to production, I can well see why he would.
It’s too bad they didn’t just make an ACTUAL replica just with added Bluetooth to make it more useable for modern purposes. I’d love to be able to play my tapes through a reliable brand new boom box.
I think the problem here, as Matt has mentioned in past videos, is that literally no one makes a decent cassette mechanism anymore. The electronics can be done, the mechanical bits can't; although the tuning dial on the Mini is a great effort.
It would’ve been extremely cool if they made a full sized replica. Made the VU needles function. The tape deck could just be a storage cubby or something. They obviously have the looks and feel down.
@@cyberyoyo7674 Minor objection: it isn't that it CAN'T be done, it is that it can't be done cheaply. Arguably can't be done profitably at all. The compact cassette is not lost technology. We know exactly how they work and have several mechanisms for study and cloning. But the cost of tooling up for large-scale manufacture would be prohibitive, particularly as there isn't large-scale demand.
@@mehmeh5471 They could have used a little OLED display that shows moving VU meters, and when you press the mode switch also the information what mode it's in. If they went through the effort to add a toy cassette I don't see why that wasn't an option (maybe apart from the VU meters not showing when it is turned of and used as decor). Also the toy cassette could have been instead a cassette-shaped USB drive and the socket would be in the cassette slot. With closing being optional in case you want to use a big pendrive. I like the battery door though, you can keep your USB cable in there. And it's not that tiny moving coil meters don't exist. My mum had a Samsung camere with two actual meters that were about 10mm in diameter. But that is probably much more expensive than a generic OLED display.
Nice faithful reproduction. Not just some cheapy knockoff. Like the storage case! The fake battery compartment on the back would be great to store memory cards/USB sticks if you want to take your music on the go.
7:58 you commented on the arials being only for show, but I'd love to see a tear-down of the device, perhaps they connected the antenna for the bluetooth controller to them and we get better Bluetooth range with them extended!
They could do a version which the size of the boom box is exactly proportional of a Compact Cassette to a Micro Cassete and made the tape section functional. That would be awesome. And I would love to hear a direct sound comparison of the three boom boxes. Thanks for posting this video.
Is there anyone still producing Micro Cassette drives? And even if, they probably have the same issue as Compact Cassette drives (i.e. it's the worst of the bunch).
Tapes are cool they sound better than most people think I bet alot of people have tapes from the 90s they wanna play and theres a market for quality players
They even made the door power open like the high end original - that’s impressive for just something that’s a prop feature lol I know it’s asking a lot probably but it would have been cool to make the AV meters work or at least back light - it’s just such a beautiful replica btw it did chime when you put the usb in - it was just quiet
Nice video mate. But please don't open your boxes the way you do with the Swiss knife sticking in the boxes.... sometimes you will definitely destroy stuff, not everytime there are cutprotections in the box.
When I saw your link to this episode I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it but I really have enjoyed this and I would Definitely purchase the device if they where in stock, thanks for showing this.
Great video, As with the VU meters which if working would add to it and probably be impractical but when I saw the dummy cassette I immediately thought Microcassette!
Hi. At 16:27 you show the location of microphone, according to the manual. But when you show us the inside of this device. At 19:36 looks like to me, that microphone it was fixit a little to the right, not at the right spot. Looking to the object in the begging of the video, the microphone align to the right of the metal grill of the speaker. At 19:36 we can see a little of hot glue, at the top, looks like microphone position. But the screws that hold that grid, is in the left of the image. In this view the microphone appears to be under the tape deck. Right?
A quick Google search told me that a real one is 4000$+ for high quality examples. Dang, this is more than my car is worth. And that's not even half the age

Wow!
@@fixman88 Many people are upset at current Disney for reasons I'm sure you're aware of. But Disney has ALWAYS been a company of S***Bags. My Wife is a Director of Animation at FOX Studios. She's been involved in the industry since the early 1990's. The horror-stories she has heard from & experienced... Yikes.
Those are really awesome. I'm not a Bluetooth audio fan, but I genuinely want to get a Mini at some point.
I believe that the M90 Mini can also be used as a power bank if I remember correctly from the Kickstarter and their product page online.
As someone that grew up in the 1980's and had the Lasonic 975 this is awesome! I wish they'd make a full size replica. I'd be all over it
Love watching your videos especially when you get a non-working gadget working. Oh, you must have a huge attic to store all bits & pieces.
Keep making the videos 👍
Very interesting products. If those models were made in the 80's, the mini model might have a micro cassette deck.
Fantastic review, thank you
Love this! Glad to see a review of something that's nice. You find some really cool stuff. Thanks for the review.
this is how to do it right for copy the look, nowadays full ranger speaker and power amp just so efficient and small at same time, and those all in one bt speaker board so many you can buy, really easy to modify, if you can find a old good looking boombox ,thats good fun little diy project, turn your old broken boombox to a good sounding with modern function classic boombox looking bt speaker, even with tape player function.
Although I have gave up long ago trying to find an old school Boombox, ended up buying a Bumpboxx Flare 8. But these reproduction M90's are so cool
Very cool! With original M-90s going from 3-5000.00 USD, this makes nostalgia much more affordable!
wow, however most in the UK seemed to end up on building sites covered in brick dust and cement
Hey! I backed this project too. Good to know I'm in good company.
Those are F'N........ AWESOME!!!! I want both!!!
Good to see Tonie Matt make an appearance
That what I've been saying if lassoic did it they can too
@@cyberyoyo7674 Minor objection: it isn't that it CAN'T be done, it is that it can't be done cheaply.
I really love when you peel the plastic off haha.
Great video of a cracking item. I’ve just purchased one of the minis off Sideshow. £150 delivered to the UK 👍🏻
8:30 had me on the floor. Wonderful.
That Micro is really quite good for the size, I was impressed for sure
That M90 Micro is a surprisingly good little pocket speaker to just throw in a bag or a jacket and take tunes with you on the go.
Neat idea
Going over to the site to see what else they have and maybe some future products.
Nice faithful reproduction. Not just some cheapy knockoff. Like the storage case! The fake battery compartment on the back would be great to store memory cards/USB sticks if you want to take your music on the go.
Retro boomboxes are always going up in value
I would love for them to reissue the original RC-M90. I'm sure there would be a sufficient demand for them.
WOW! I stopped what I was doing to watch this - thanks!
Who doesn't love an amazing peel moment!! 😂😁👍
The peeling and the tune at the end still gets me.
Shame the M90 mini doesn't play micro cassettes.
We care only for replicas that can play cassettes! It is our passion ❤ 💙 !!!
Right?
No VU meters? No sale. No sale. T La Rock said “It’s Yours”!
A quick Google search told me that a real one is 4000$+ for high quality examples. Dang, this is more than my car is worth. And that's not even half the age
I love my mini. Thank you for sharing your review.
Thanks for the review!
Thanks for adding the new bit. I was also wondering about the tweeters.
Thanks again for great video.....I enjoy watching....greetings from Serbia !
