- This year, 2017, marks 130 years since Barnsley Football Club was formed in 1887.
Reds in the Community, a registered charity delivering community and charitable activity on behalf of Barnsley Football Club, is celebrating the club’s 130th anniversary by involving supporters and the wider community in exploring and telling the story of Barnsley FC and its home ground, Oakwell.
Through the ‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Creative Minds initiative, new heritage displays are being developed for Oakwell focusing on key events in Barnsley FC’s history from 1887 to the present day.
Volunteers involved in the project have been interviewing former Barnsley FC players about their Barnsley FC memories, and the part they have each played in the wider club story. Volunteers were thrilled to interview club legend, Ronnie Glavin, recently. Watch the video now and hear some of Ronnie Glavin’s memories of his time at Oakwell!
Reds in the Community is currently seeking Reds fans’ memories and pictures from this era. We want to hear your stories, and see your photos from these special days!

As I write this comment, shivers are running down my back, just thinking of "King Ronnie " & that wonderful team around him & the never to be forgotten memories that they have given me.
When football was football !
Brilliant player
The finest footballer at Barnsley during my life time..Gave me so many wonderful memories
Almost brought me to tears. Wonderful memories from arguably Barnsley’s greatest ever player.
Best player we have ever had fantastic player wish we had one now
I was only 8 when Allan Clarke came to us but I still remember the back end of the Jim Iley period. Clarke transformed the club, was more professional and gates doubled, a change for Barnsley in that we’d a few bob to spend and thank goodness we did or we might not have seen Ronnie in action the main guy in a top side. For a midfielder to get as many goals as he did was phenomenal, my favourite goal was one he got in a 3-0 win against Burnley, he got the ball from just outside our area laid it off and then went on a 80 yard gut busting run but still had the presence to dink the ball over the keeper when he got the ball in the Burnley box. Thanks for the memories Ronnie they are so cherished.
Quite simply the best player I have ever seen in a Barnsley shirt....and I've seen a lot, absolute legend who deserved more fame.
Same.be worth a fortune in today's game
T'old Ronnie. Used to see him regular when I was a lad. Lived near me. Always had time for you. Top man, brilliant player.
Lisa's husband, Andy here. Ronnie was the best player in the finest Barnsley team ever!!! For a couple or so years you rarely came away from Oakwell miserable. My Nan used to say, "did they win?" and invariably I said "yep". Great times.

A Red for ever - legend.
Ronnie should have been at Celtic a lot longer than he was, I was gutted when he left.
legend
That’s what the club should be trying to achieve now not just let’s just hope for the best
Am 50 now....still have a framed picture at top of the stairs. My George best. He deserves a statue outside oakwell. My boy hood hero 😉
too Barnsley by Wayne😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
What’s with the music. It’s like Richard Clayderman’s tuning up. Give it integrity, not sentimental.
My cousin brillaint
Great to see the legend but can barely hear him for the totally unnecessary piano music constantly playing over the top of it all. Please get rid of it and the interview will be 100% better
Coyr
