- Chapter 8 of Heir to the Empire, by Timothy Zahn. Adapted into a short fanfilm.
The Rebel Alliance has destroyed the Death Star, defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor, and driven the remnants of the old Imperial Starfleet to a distant corner of the galaxy.
Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting Jedi twins. And Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long-awaited line of Jedi Knights.
But thousands of light-years away, the last of the Emperor's warlords has taken command of the shattered Imperial fleet, readied it for war, and pointed it at the fragile heart of the New Republic....

“You’ve served too long under Lord Vader, Captain. I have no qualms with an idea simply because it wasn’t my own. My ego and position are not at stake here.” That’s the mark of a good leader.
Agreed :)
Oh man, I hate to do this... but could you imagine Trump in the Empire? >_<
The guy would have vaporized Alderaan just because they didn't send him a birthday card.
And all the artwork he studied would be self portraits he finger painted.
I think this was one of the more memorable moments from the book for me. When Captain Pellaeon mused (internally) about what the outcome of the Battle of Endor would be if Thrawn was in command, not that incompetent traitor Vader :-)
@@Mercurystars4202 I doubt Trump would be a bad leader in Star Wars, if he was the emperor than he would give the galaxy more freedom than Sideous, and be much better with the economy due to his business skills. Though his ego would rival that of Sideous’s.
@@extantsanity thats almost every American president in recent memory though. Lol
Timothy Zahn nailed how Star Wars should do politics. Thank you for bringing it from the pages of a book to animated form so well.
Agreed. This had a real "Babylon 5" feel to it. Far more so than even the book. I think the council chamber's design is a big part of the reason for that.
@@jaffarebellion292 That Babylon 5 reference was spot on.

Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Grand Admiral Thrawn ? No. I thought not. It’s not a story the Disney would tell you. It's a Expanded Universe legend. Thrawn was a Grand Admiral of the Empire , so intelligent and so sophisticated. He had such a knowledge of the Unkown Reigions. He could even keep the ones he cared about from Rebels. He could actually save people from Rebellion ?
What happened to him? He became so superior... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his artworks, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught to Rukh everything he knew, then Rukh killed him in his sitting in chair. It's ironic. He could save others from Rebellion, but not himself.
"But... it was so artistically done."
Best comment ever
great, i think that it should be "its not a story Disney would tell you" in the start but still this is my personal favourite Darth Plagueis speech edit.
@@MrSamoMD thank you bro :D
@@caijones156 I fixed it as "Disney". Thanks for advice.
@@caijones156 And Disney reintroduced Thrawn in Rebels (something I have no complains about except for the fact that he was defeated by space whales).
Han: It was a lot easier when we were just taking on the Empire. At least we knew who our enemies were.
So we’re not gonna talk about Cloud City, then?
What happened in Cloud City stays in Cloud City :)

Imagine knowing this type of source material was out there, then making The Force Awakens.
Well TFA takes place after Luke started and ended his Jedi Academy, there was no context in that movie. You were just supposed to just go with whatever information they threw at you and it wasn't planned out at all. Then Rian Johnson does his own take in TLJ and makes Luke out to be a jerk. Then ROS rushed to the finish without proper explanation because the trilogy had to end. They didn't even stop and focus on a single film to be good and plan out the trilogy. It was about getting out there as soon as they bought it.
The books and video games from Lucasarts treated those characters so much better.
@@rainehappy7097 The Disney Wars trilogy is their way of hitting us OG Star Wars fans with the Slap-O-Matic™ set on *FOOK YOU!* which is the highest setting for the Slap-O-Matic™.
Well, a part of this type of source material was used for Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars, so I'm not complaining here.
Yah I was wondering this being my favorite author and series and then seeing that abomination. I was like so they hated star wars so much they wanted to make one for themselves to see how bad they can slaughter it? But if money is what they wanted why not just hit up the rights to timothy zhan's books. Make a script in half the time and receive praise rather then scorn.
Hallelujah this exists after Rise of skywalker this is therapy thank God I moved the old expanded universe

@@achaudhari101 Obvious exaggeration going over your head here. Relieving might be the better word if you want to be literal? I gave up on the Disney Canon too, and it's nice to see some work being done with the old EU as an alternative. This is a far more fascinating sequel to RotJ than the Disney trilogy.
@@ryantiller5624 You gave up on the wrong thing considering not everything Disney Canon has made is garbage. I personally think you don't want them to do better so you retreated to something that is also not canon. Oh and SEQUEL Trilogy.
@@achaudhari101 It hasn't been all garbage. I enjoyed Solo, I enjoyed Rogue One, I really enjoyed elementa of Rebels. I even enjoyed Force Awakens at the time, but it's a little harder to do so now that I know it doesn't go anywhere.
The Thrawn Trilogy delivered a better sequel to the OT, that's just how I see it. What do you want to see after the Rebels defeat the Empire? The difficulties of maintaining that victory and the galaxy they now control? Like an actual sequel, like the story the Thrawn Trilogy told. Or a total reset where the Rebels are just the Rebels again for no reason and the Empire is just renamed the First Order? A soft reboot.
What kind of new threat would you like to see? A villain completely different from Vader and Palpatine, like Thrawn, or a poor Vader cosplayer and literally Palpatine again?
We can agree to disagree. My opinion won't be invalidated by your claim that I have a vendetta though.
@@ryantiller5624 The issue with the Thrawn Trilogy is that it was done way too late and Lucas wasn't beholden to the EU like that. His outlines had nothing to do with the Eu except for Talon and even then people would have bitched about that choice. Even in the EU, there always were at war to where it felt like the prequels in terms of the cycle of a war and a Jedi falling to the dark side Yuzhan Vong War was Clone Wars 2.0, Second Galactic Civil War was like the OT all over again).

Now this is truly a great video. Thrawn’s eyes look like red lamps that stare down at your soul. You also did a good job of showing how haggard c’boath would become when he first began controlling the soldiers.
Excellent as always
Imagine this story could have been the sequel movies and would have been a lot better than what we got
@DarthAngelus you truly are a hero. I have been dreaming of seeing this come to life since I read the trilogy as a youngster back in the 90s.
Before the dark times.
And you have done a superb job. I would say this is a demonstration of perfection.
The tingles I got in episode 2 when Luke was talking to ObiWan and Obi-Wan said
‘I have loved you as a son, as a student, and as a friend’ as he was saying goodbye.
I am a grown man and I felt tears welling up when I heard that. With coruscant in the background. Perfection.
Thank you so so much.
I still dream of attempting a live action version of this.
I would start with how the book starts, close up in the pupil of Captain Palleon’s eye as he thinks the narrative. Slowly zooming out to see the bridge of the Star Destroyer.
Imagine if Disney had the bravery to do this. The actress who played Leia in Rogue One, she did a great job despite all the criticism of Leia’s CG smile - bring her into it and de-age Luke like they did in the Irishman with de Niro and bring Harrison ford back in and de-age him.
Everyone would’ve forgiven the uncanny valley aspect of it and would’ve really appreciated the effort to bring Zahn’s ST to life. If only they did it in this timeline.
We would all be so happy. They would’ve recreated that feeling we all got back in the days of the OT. That optimism, that hope, that adventure.
Something you’ve managed to recapture with your incredible efforts. I salute you.
Thankyou so much! A live action version would be great to see, I wish I could do it too! And that scene with Luke and Obi-Wan got to me when I was making it too :)
I love this trilogy. It was always my favorite from Star Wars Legends. Excellent job with the videos DarthAngelus.
This makes the Disney sequel trilogy look like a joke. Even Lucas acknowledged Heir to the Empire with the inclusion of Coruscant in the movies.
And Thrawn in the video games. :)

I'm in love with Thrawn's voice
He's great to listen to :)
Me too.
The space scene models were very beautiful in this episode particularly. Love the attention to detail both there and in the character movement during the political speeches. The more you work on this project, the better it gets.
Thankyou! I...ugh...copied some real politicians to get their animations looking authentic.
I swear these chapters get even better every time. Keep up the great work Darth Angelus.
Continue with this series we need more like you to keep legends alive
I really am impressed with this. Not all of the voices are on point, I understand you can't be perfect, but out of everyone I think you did the best voice work with C'baoth.
That would be Richard Grove :)
Threepio's on point, too, I basically forget that's "not" Threepio.
Honestly, this chapter his voice reminded me a bit of Rahm Kota, especially right after you rescue him from Nar Shadaa. Really highlights the "Old man Jedi slowly descending into insanity" bit that is C'baoth.
My version of the voices are the audiobook voices and the rebels ones.
This is what Star Wars was made for. The Heir to the Empire series is actually entertaining and really brings legends and fan films to light. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication on this.
Thankyou you so much for these really kind words! It's good to be bringing this story to life and reminding so many fans of the story and even introducing new ones to it :)
Love this so much especially that the empire has a new leader who is definitely worthy as it's heir
You made the pages come to life I am so impressed by this.
It's so much fun to be doing this :)
back when it was just the original trilogy in the 90s, and expanded universe could be found in most major stores in the book sections , the dark forces games, shadows of the empire, all of that -- star wars had a certain feel to it (which i think that's why people didn't like the new trilogy when it came out in the 2000s because it had it's own feel ; and likewise the disney trilogy, well the 2nd movie i walked out of and i never went to go see a movie again, they def didn't capture the feeling), and after all of these years with these amazing jaw dropping animations, with the voice work, the settings, the music, those voices! i mean the dialogue, everything - it FEELS like the old star wars i grew up loving. it's such a trip! it's simple and fantastic storytelling, and i'm having a blast just watching these!
Thankyou so much! Getting the feel of Star Wars right is very important to me :)
That quote at the end there is great. Timothy Zahn really made these books well!
He really did! I hope he sees this one day :)
5:58 - 6:09 is a great example of cross-cutting. I love the cinematic feel behind your work!
I am loving to watch this! Just proves how the Thrawn Trilogy is the right and the best sequel for the original Star Wars trilogy! Not that poorly and bad written Disney Trilogy. This is so epic!

So glad I was recommended this channel and get to see my favorite Star Wars book come alive like this.
I'm glad you came and enjoyed the series so far :)
I came from Eckhartsladder's video on this series. Please don't be dissuaded from the lack of views. These chapters have been amazing to watch, and I would love to see the rest of the book done, and the Thrawn trilogy as a whole if at all possible. While it's hard to completely erase the Sequel Trilogy from memory, having an animated adaptation of Heir to the Empire is as close as it gets. I haven't read the Thrawn trilogy myself (something I plan on doing eventually) so this has been really fun to watch, and it's great to see something that really feels like Star Wars. Keep up the great work.
Thankyou so much! I can highly recommend the books and hope you enjoy them as much as this series when you get to them :)
You do the universe great justice..this trilogy lit a fire that only jar jar binx could extinguish

Haha, yep that was me! It's still here on my channel if you want to see it again :)
This gives me utter euphoria. Zahn knew how to write the continuation from the og far better than Disney. And you guys have done this adaption so masterfully it brings tears to my eyes, as it thought all this lore and story lost to non-canon condemnation.

More excellent work. Great casting, sound design, and all. Interesting how the actor for Thrawn gave him what sounds like an upper class English accent, something befitting his station, I'd imagine.
These are incredible. I remember reading these books in the 7th grade as there were being released. Back when the SW universe was barely taking form... i think the only other novels were Splinter of the Mind's Eye and the Solo trilogy.
Amazing how we got to watch it bloom and then wither after Disney took over.
Yeah, I remember finding the first two books and the loooong (at least it felt like it to 9 year old me) wait for The Last Command.

Good job on the upload man.
Beautiful work on the scene transition to Coruscant at 6:02, the planet, ships and rain effect 6:10 and the chosen sounds are terrific; very cinematic feel! The story is coming along nicely and the character interactions worked very well - Thank you for the hard work! ^_^
Thankyou so much! I really enjoy putting in those kind of transitions and making the locations look different from each other :)
The nohgri originally were supposed to have Vader’s mask as a face, and Vader wore that mask to communicate with them. But George Lucas disapproved it as a story line.

I am criminally late to this party. Only came across this series today (23 September 2020). And as a really avid fan of the Thrawn Trilogy and the X-Wing Series since high school (as well as the NJO Series, Darth Bane Trilogy and Legacy of the Force Series when they came out), I can feel the spirit of Star Wars in these works, along with the genuine passion and love for it given by @DarthAngelus. Nearly 40 now, and proudly with a 5-year-old daughter who has known Luke, Darth Vader, Leia, Han, Obi-Wan and Yoda longer than she has known Paw Patrol!

That is one beautiful Chimera.
Awesome, this is the true sequel trilogy.
Ehhhh.
The shot of Mon Calamari ships guarding Coruscant was more iconic than anything in Disney trilogy crap.
That bit with Mon Mothama's mixed up priorities always annoyed me. "Oh, Leia, you can't go be a Jedi no matter how important Jedi may be! I need you to go back to that race of irritating midgets who just tried to kill you, because reasons!" Anybody can go talk to the Bimms. How many Jedi trainees you got at this point, Mothy?
I think it comes from non force users being so used to there being no Jedi around that they can't see why they're important. I know Mon Mothma knew what the Old Republic was like with Jedi but that was still a long time ago.

Sabioth is a surprisingly interesting character, with his unusual reasoning for working with Thrawn. It's also cool to see Palleon doing well and that Thrawn is not the only competent Imperial.

So the empire has fallen in this timeline and what is left of it is under the control of thrawn who is it's new leader right
@@preciousotoakhia9789 Basically
No offense to Thrawn, but Vader had no problems taking in useful ideas that weren't his. ESB had Captain Piett guessing that the Rebels were on Hoth. Admiral Ozzel tried to shoo away the idea, but Vader accepted it and set sail for Hoth with his fleet.
True. What he didn't like was constant failure. He was actually very polite to the crew and officers. Unlike Kylo Ren, who was an ass.
@@littledogie8390 Thrawn was also an egotist compared to Vader. He thought he could control the Nohgri and Joruus-he was wrong on both accounts.
@@HolyknightVader999 I don't agree. Thrawn was calculating and confident--to a fault sometimes. He would not be able to tell the captain he was not offended by his suggestion if he was egotistical.

This series is getting better all the time!
I love how you used the Chimaera design from Rebels with the cool paintings.
I think the design came from the book first and then Rebels also used it because ye know it's thrawn one of the best people at strategy.
@@davidty2006 In the book it's never stated, it's only said that the Chimaera is an ISD and that serves as Thrawn's flagship.
I think it's exclusively used in Rebels (and the Armada tabletop game released a Chimeara model with the design painted on it). I spent some time trying to decide if I should just use the standard plain ISD or use one with the design, then realised it helps us see which ship is the Chimaera when there are a lot of Star Destroyers on screen at once. Something we're going to see in the next chapter ;)
@@DarthAngelus It also looks really cool, and in the novels it's just not mentioned as often happens with such details.
