    Yes, the apartheid government in South Africa created the racial category of "Coloured" to maintain racial divisions and enforce white supremacy in the second half of the 20th century. The term was used to describe people who were considered to be of mixed race, and was one of four main racial groups defined by law. The other three groups were White South Africans, Black South Africans, and Indians.
