    A follow up video to the last part where I struggled to work out the cause of a "no video" fault on a Nintendo GameCube. I also look at another one here at the same time.

    Note: I forgot to show the resistor I fitted in place of the one that came off when cleaning. If you look closely you can see I fitted a brand new 0805 one later as the old one broke in two due to the corrosion. I've ordered some universal stencils, and I have already removed the CPU - confirmed bad solder point and a damaged via under the CPU. In the next part I will have a go at refitting the CPU.

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  5 лет назад +1

      It's almost impossible to solder from the side there - clearance is like 0.5mm. If I had a super fine tip I might be able to I guess.

    I used your videos here as a reference when I was fixing my girlfriend's GameCube. It had a similar issue where the IPL couldn't start, resulting in a blackscreen on boot, though this one wouldn't even produce video. It was otherwise completely spotless. No corrosion on any part of the unit's shielding plates, and spotless connectors that all were verified working in another console. I found one completely random VIA that was fully corroded through with a blue residue near the system RAM. I cleaned it up and traced the link, rejoining it on the back side of the mainboard. It booted up without issue after that. I went a step further and got XenoAT328 compiled and flashed to an Arduino Pro Mini to act as a mod chip. It's all working great now. It was a silver DOL-101 for reference, so it wasn't fixed with any intention of profits, but it's nice to know that it can be fixed.
    I wish you the best of luck on your reball attempts, and thanks again for the starting point and hints on the possible problem. I couldn't even find any references online other than your video on what to look for in regards to issues after all. I can only hope yours can be saved as well. All GameCubes deserve a second life!

    Love that the ATI Chip is named flipper, considering that Dolphin was the code-name for the GC. Looks like the days of needing bench Microscopes, more rework tools & test equipment are getting closer and closer. I wouldn't mind one now. My back was in bits after leaning into those Socket 7 motherboard repairs.

    I got a Gamecube that was as rusty as that really bad one. I looked like it sat outside for a couple of years! Amazingly, even though it was sold as "junk/parts", it booted right up and had no problem reading discs (I had cleaned the lens with IPA first thing though),
    Scrubbing the rusty ground plane around the edge of the board with IPA didn't do very much, but scrubbing it with a Q-tip soaked in Deoxit cleaned it right up!

    Top video Chris, the GameCube is a very underappreciated system if you asked me. Bummer you couldn't get both of the systems working but at least you made one good working system out of the two. As for re-balling the chip I'd wouldn't bother it's too much hassle. I'd just use the board for spares and try and fix the faulty laser to keep for a backup.

    Very nice, I am always excited to see a new video from you, I haven't watched the whole video yet but a technique I always wanted to try but never got around to on the metal parts is submerging it in rust remover (you can get it in the auto parts store) it's a yellow liquid and removes rust slowly , once it's removed you can spray paint the metal and it should permanently fix it, you can even reuse the liquid
    Ofcourse PCBs are way more difficult but after watching way too much Lois Rossman videos for my own good it looks like a very good ultrasonic cleaner can clean it , but wow are those things expensive!

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  5 лет назад +1

      The problem is that because its a multi layer board there are traces in the middle inbetween the top and bottom traces. Plus the traces on the top side would be in the way of any hole you might want to drill in that area =/

    New to your channel man. I am having an issue with gamecube not reading discs. I tweaked the POT, but no luck. Replaced the laser, and still no luck. Any advice?

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  5 лет назад

      It could be a number of things - firstly, it could be the replacement laser does not work properly (often these cheap ones can be hit and miss as to whether they work or not - I usually buy 3 or 4 if they are so cheap, and often will find 50% work, 50% do not). You really need to scope the RF signal and adjust the pot based on that signal to be 100% sure if the laser works or not. If it still does not work with a 100% known good working laser, you might have a fault somewhere else on the drive. It's worth testing the motors, ensure the track zero switch works OK, lubricate the rails with some lithium grease or molykote, check that the gears are OK (free to move with no broken teeth). Finally it could be the SMD caps on the drive PCB, a faulty IC or component on there, or bad connection between the drive PCB and the motherboard. Also check the motherboard looks OK, and that the regulator PCB is outputting the correct voltages (covered in part 1 of the recent series I just did on the GameCube).

    my gamecube been freezing randomly or artifacting every time i play super monkey ball 2 bowling. Fine on everything else mostly. It happens after a bit. I think caused due to heat. SNy idea what to do to fix it? (could it be the fan?)

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  3 года назад

      Probably not the fan, it could be something overheating - maybe re-seat the heat sink and add some good thermal paste and re-test it. It could also be a power problem, or bad capacitors (least likely on these). Finally it could be a bad BGA connection, or a failing IC - RAM?!?

    • @DragonProtector
      @DragonProtector 3 года назад

      @@GadgetUK164 ya i had this problem since i had the console in 2002 lol. But managed to fix it. I did get a new board well pre owned but was fully working. I used 2.0mm pads on ram, cpu and gpu and screwed down heatsink lightly till screw stopped turning. Seemed to have stopped freezing mostly. I think it overheating due to fan not performing like it should. I can play awhile but then it either reboots on me now or freezes.
      I am waiting for new fan mount and side fan to arrive to test cooling. (fan it got clean but i feel hot air coming out but barely feel air.) Also fan really loud.

I have had a quick look around and there are many out there this one looked a bit different to your usual metal stencil as its a sticker here is the link www.intertronics.co.uk/product/flextac-bga-rework-stencils/
