"is that necessary? by all means no; and that's why we did it" - BEAUTIFUL, sir, I applaud your commitment to puttering
Nice job. For all of the work you did on this, I would consider making another blade insert out of 1060 or 1070 carbon steel and harden and temper it for longevity. Those mending plates are most likely make from unhardenable mild steel.
Well at least the audio came back for the dad joke xD
I thought this was going to be one of those kit jobs , but no, it s really basic stuff anyone can get a their local hardware store. Thanks for great video. Although my sound cuts out at 10:45 Is that because of what you said about rex?😅
Ditto on the sound cutting out. Don't know what he said about Rex, but ?
You’re right-no sound and no cc.
Lol, Rex is going to get mad at you!
That's the secret, cap. I'm always angry at James.
@@RexKrueger I think yours works better anyway. More versatile and you can carry it with you in your pocket 😀
A told you he loves nice treated nuts 🤭
I bought one from Lee Valley years ago. Never thought of making one. Good idea! Great job!
I have the Veritas equivalent to this. I taped it off, leaving a little strip that aligns with the edges of the blade and spray painted it so I now have a little black stripe on either side that makes it easier to line up with the slot of the screw, which you can't see during use.
I couldn’t find the Veritas driver. What do they call it?
@@sparkyheberling6115 They all it "plane screwdriver". The model number is Item 50K3901. I originally thought that this was a frivolous purchase, but I find that I really like it.
Not necessary? That's not true. I absolutely need one of those now! 😍
And so that's one more project added to my list.
One screwdriver to rule them all …
I really like how that turned out
Great idea. Now time for me to go make one.
Great project, thanks for showing how
Audio cuts ot at 10:30 until 11:00
unfortunately something happened in the upload. and I cant fix it now. hate it when that happens.
That's so cool. Awesome work!
I really Liked this project and will recreating on my own thank you.
I was expecting you to use a grinder to get the piece to fit the slot, but I forgot you and Rex are agnostics when it comes to electricity LOL!
Then the problem is the steel is really soft so if you put it on a grinder you end up taking off too much and less than a second.
Cool little project ,just for fun
Great solution to a problem of mine! Thanks!
You said it. Have fun in your shop.
Pretty cool project! I need to make something like this using a ratchet socket.
Ahhh, yesss. Another one of those 'roundtuit projects.
What a great idea! Nicely done, James! I think I’ll make one of those.
I know you called it a day, but I am still calling it a chipbreaker driver, although day is easier to say. LOL. Love this one, shop time to get me one of those made.
I have been thinking of making one of these but not gotten around to it. But first I have to finish the wardrobe, bed and give the fivesided splayed dovetail box a go.
Stay tuned for the Lee Valley kit coming soon.
This is a really neat tool! Thanks for sharing this.
I like this because I'm always worried about a slip that might scratch up some of my more valuable planes. I also like that blue epoxy you used with the walnut.
I started making one of these yesterday. 👍
Beautiful, James! Amazing work! 😃
I'm definitely going to make one!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Great project, I find screw drivers never fit well and tend to ding the slot in the screw.
Thanks! I will be making one for sure!
I was gonna go for Matt Estlea's screw driver... but this is so much easier!! :) I think I'm gonna do one asap.
Wow...I loved it...I made many drivers but not like yours...that brass part came from hose union was very smart...congratulations from Brazil
James you can give me your e-mail address please.I can send to you my ideas in how make a handplane screw driver
Bummer, the audio dropped at the end, but it came back for the dad joke, so not a total loss.
Wonderful tool 😮
Great video
Looking good 👍
Great tutorial. On my to do list.
Seems to be a great turning project. Also it reminds me of a hand grenade.
When I was shown how to do this,we laid the plane iron on a table. Never in the hand as screw driver slips and stabs the hand.
the lack of audio around 10:30 drove me crazy pun intended
Nice tool!
Sound went away at 10:28 and came back at 10:57.
I will have to make one nice job
Wait, you didn't use white oak? No, not the first. I guess it isn't a joke. 😂
sound cut at the end
Very nice
A piece of blue tempered shim stock, the desired thickness would be the best thing to make the blade out of. That piece is mild steel, which will likely be deformed over time and becomes useless.
Nice!
Why make this when the lever cap works perfectly well? 😅 great job! I may make my self one sometime
LOL now that is a great way to start an argumeent. LOL
I'm inspired - thanks.
at 10:28 the audio cuts out for 30 seconds
Now if someone did some of the finish would that be by eproxy?
Audio cut out at 10:29 :(
Wonder if i could use a screwdriver bit.....
Lost the audio at the end
That's really cool. I'll have to make one so I can stop being a neanderthal lol 😂
But wait, you can just go buy a "hand tool hero" 🤣🤣
Heads up: You can turn soft metals on a wood lathe. Brass may bee too hard, but I know you can turn copper and most grades of aluminum.
With carbide, it doesn't really matter, you can cut any metal.
With HSS, softer metals (ali, brass, copper, etc.) Should all be fine.
Go slow, expect a pretty poor finish and tollerance, but it can still be completely usable.
If you're using sandpaper or a file, doesn't really matter either.
Love it !!!
The sound cuts out around 10:30 mark for a few sentences.
unfortunately something happened in the upload. and I cant fix it now. hate it when that happens.
Cool
Files like a western style saw work on the push stroke, not the pull.
most yes. there are a few specialized floats that work on the pull stroke.
Yes, they work on the push stroke, but they can remove material on the back stroke, and it doesn't damage them any meaningful amount, especially on wood.
Is the blade recessed or proud of the collet? Thanks 🙏🏻
It is recessed about 1/16"
Most in the trade just use the front end of the chipbreaker backing piece, much handier its there with the plane.
Yeah, they're the ones with chipped lever caps
Tᴏᴏʟ-ʟᴇss ᴡɪɴɢɴᴜᴛ ?
Once, my sensei scolded me for making a jig to sharpen my blade.
He said only westerners needs jig for everything. I guess he speak the truth.
I don't even need a screwdriver. Lever cap works perfect and came free with my plane
oh that is a great way to get a lot of woodworkers mad at you. lol
Time waster
thanks for the feedback.
