    Nice job. For all of the work you did on this, I would consider making another blade insert out of 1060 or 1070 carbon steel and harden and temper it for longevity. Those mending plates are most likely make from unhardenable mild steel.

    I thought this was going to be one of those kit jobs , but no, it s really basic stuff anyone can get a their local hardware store. Thanks for great video. Although my sound cuts out at 10:45 Is that because of what you said about rex?😅

    I have the Veritas equivalent to this. I taped it off, leaving a little strip that aligns with the edges of the blade and spray painted it so I now have a little black stripe on either side that makes it easier to line up with the slot of the screw, which you can't see during use.

    A piece of blue tempered shim stock, the desired thickness would be the best thing to make the blade out of. That piece is mild steel, which will likely be deformed over time and becomes useless.

    Heads up: You can turn soft metals on a wood lathe. Brass may bee too hard, but I know you can turn copper and most grades of aluminum.

    • @autumn5592
      @autumn5592 Год назад +1

      With carbide, it doesn't really matter, you can cut any metal.
      With HSS, softer metals (ali, brass, copper, etc.) Should all be fine.
      Go slow, expect a pretty poor finish and tollerance, but it can still be completely usable.
      If you're using sandpaper or a file, doesn't really matter either.

    Files like a western style saw work on the push stroke, not the pull.

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Год назад +1

      most yes. there are a few specialized floats that work on the pull stroke.

    • @autumn5592
      @autumn5592 Год назад +3

      Yes, they work on the push stroke, but they can remove material on the back stroke, and it doesn't damage them any meaningful amount, especially on wood.
