  • History Channel’s popular series Vikings has brought some of Norse history and legend's most famous and notorious heroes to life. The popular series has also brought renewed interest to the life of Vikings during the Middle Ages. Characters like Ragnar Lothbrok, Lagertha, Rollo, and Bjorn Ironside are not just legendary figures in the pages of history books anymore but have now also become TV show characters with large fan followings.
    But unfortunately, even good things have to wrap up sometimes. The popular series is coming to an end after six epic seasons. But why? This is the real reason Vikings is ending.

      Sue J I liked the Floki character and his evolution, maybe even more than Ragnar, as the series progressed. He was as compelling and complex as Ragnar and not really as crazy as we thought he was portrayed. Ragnar may have been Wyatt Earp to Floki;s Doc Holiday. Like Holiday, Floki had a skill besides sacking and killing people:). He had a story, but I don't think Floki could have saved the series,. The writers messed up big time in how they wrote his story. Just my humble thoughts.

    • @suej3959
      @suej3959 4 года назад +16

      vinyltapelover thanks for your thoughts. I know what you mean about Floki being a lesser character and therefore not able to save Vikings, but for me it was his story in Iceland that really dragged the story down after Ragnar died. It was the same thing week in and week out, misery and more misery in Iceland with no hope in sight of resolution. It felt like the writers didn’t know what to do with him. In contrast, Ragnar’s sons were given dramatic storyline’s but Ivar’s disposition just got more and more evil and I kept hoping that Floki would come back and take him on, but no - a wonderful character was completely wasted and it was at the end of season 5 that I decided I was done with Vikings. Maybe it should have ended when Ragnar died.

One thing though I noticed was that after a few seasons they failed to embrace the viking culture in the same way they did in season 1. It was just a bunch of wars and shit. Unforch though, all these shows where the seasons starts to split into multiple stories going on simultaneously is when shit starts to hit the fan and people drop out. Honestly the first thing that pissed me off was when Ragnar left his loving devoted wife.

    When Ragnar was on that boat and had hallucinations about his early life, when he was just a farmer and was loved by his family and his very good friend Athelstan, he really saw what he had actually desired in his life as he lost it all and he knew it was never going to happen again... I worked on Vikings for four years. None of this is true. History wanted Vikings to continue, it didn't cancel it. That's the first thing. That's been said often enough by both Hirst and History.. Ratings may have dropped in North America, but they are bigger all over the world. NA isn't the only market.
    The real truth is we knew Vikings was ending almost a year ago. Even two years ago, when S5 was ordered, Hirst was already preparing to move on. It's a massive production, ten months a year in Ireland, and he simply lost his passion for it. He had already started a new production company and was only convinced to make two more 20 episode seasons on the proviso six would be his last.
    The Producers visited us on set while we were filming the finale, and told us it was in the top 4 rated shows globally. They didn't want it to end, but Hirst wants to move on. We were also told a Vikings 2 was very likely.
    So, yeah, straight from the horses mouth as it were. Vikings wasn't cancelled, Hirst just wants to move on. We're waiting to see who takes the reigns, and discussions are already underway.

    Did we forget that some of these scenes, are a part of actual viking history? It's not that Travis Fimmel (Ragnar Lothbrok) WANTED to leave, that simply is how history was written in the events happening at the time! Ragnar was killed by King Aelle, by being dropped into a pit of snakes. That was the REAL Ragnar Lothbrok's demise. The beautiful thing is how Michael Hirst put more story within it, rather than Ragnar being captured and killed, Ragnar willingly walked to his death, planned it out.. In my opinion they could not have done it better, and those who abolished their interest in the show, truly didn't care for the history of the show, despite it's few inaccuracies. Such as, Ragnar wasn't the one to jump out of the coffin and take princess Gisla 'hostage'.
    In the end, it's a fantastic show, beginning to (almost) end. It's because of the people that chose not to finish what they've buried themselves 4 seasons into.. who didn't want to see the REVENGE for Ragnar and how him having all of those sons really affected the future of the Vikings... that they will not finish it the way they should.
    That is my only disappointment.

      Yes but Hirsh then completely deviates from the real history of the characters that follow. Harold does unite Norway and become its first King. Bjorn is the father of the kings of Sweden. Ivar makes his fame mostly in Scotland and Ireland, founding the city of Dublin. Erik is the father of Leif Erikssen. Auslag is the father of ALL Ragnar's sons. Rollo's story doesn't happen until years after Ragnar's death. Lagertha is a relatively minor character. I understand poetic license but real history serves up way better stories than what they settled for in this soap opera.

    "his sons are boring" I'm sorry? Ivar is literally the least boring character I have ever seen. The problem is the writers phoned it in by trying to run too many plotlines at a time. This took away form character development as no single subplot could be carried through because there were too many characters now. We don't see closeness between characters...case and point--it was dumb how lagartha fell in love with the priest after not even knowing him. Idiotic. The slow growth of characters was discarded for more gore that looked absolutely ridiculous in season 4-5, like rollings fake heads. Terrible. The first couple seasons relied on gorgeous nature shots and full characters. Floki's voyage to Iceland was not boring, it just couldn't be given its fair due because too much else was going on. Dear Vikings LESS IS MORE! The last season tried waaayyy too hard and lost us in the chaos

      I can totally agree apart from that I never really liked Ivar because of his senseless cruelty. I also enjoyed the slower story telling of the first episodes and the focus on less but more intense characters. I didn't really connect or start to care about the other / newer characters because they were ended so quickly (e.g. Agnes, Björns second love.. What was her name? And others). And the character Floki (and Helga) were very sympathic and had deserved a longer story, too. Especially the Iceland story was too cut into small pieces to be really engaging. I cannot complain because I loved the show and it was mostly much fun to watch. But in my opinion it would have been better if they had sticked to that slower and more emotional storytelling.

      I really like Bjorn, he's my favorite character after Ragnar. In my opinion the ratings went down because main characters kept doing things that were out of character for them. Ragnar leaving for 10+ years, Loki acting weird, the whole "slaughter Christians and desecrate their churches, but respect the Muslims!" was totally out of character for all Vikings, not just Loki. There's so many other cases of out-of-character crap they did that made me lose respect for them. That said, I still look forward to the seasons, and I see it as an epic Saga like Star Wars that takes place across generations. I like that.

Just the fraternal conflict between Ivar and his siblings is a wonderful spectacle to behold. I wouldn't mind it going on for another few seasons. In any case, Viking history, like the history of any majorly successful culture, can never be reduced to one person. He was not all that successful in Anglo-Saxon ''England'' , therefore, he went to Scotland and later to the Viking main center, Dublin, Ireland. He was often called a ''Berserker'' in Ireland ! He died around 873, from a sudden illness, fever and infection. Some are saying '' Dysentery'' ! He died in his bed ! He was not a crippled Viking Warlord. The Icelandic Chronicals of the 12 century mentioned that Ivarr had the strength of 7 men, went he was a young man....not really the description of a ''cripple'' !

    I loved the Vikings show. So sad when it ended if there's more I'll watch, then I'll get disappointed again when it ends again. I get so attached to the characters. You have the ones you root for and the ones you don't like so much, and that's because they fit their naughty characters so well. So hard to find really good shows, Vikings is one of those.
