There are not much more to say about Ragnar LoÔbrok, (unless the producers would write more fiction ) ..he went to the Anglo-Saxon ''England'' with only, this is important, only 2 longships, got caught by a stronger force and thrown into a dungeon where they kept vipers ! He died there ! His mistake, really ! This is from the Icelandic and Anglo-Saxon Chronicles and Sagas, from the 12 century, which also mentioned Ragnar wanted to impress his sons. --- Concerning the ''trip'' to Paris, this is not certain...there were 4 different ''Viking'' with similar names...or they have combined the 4 in one !?!? Difficult to know for the moment !

@@RayB1656 We all know that much of the show was fictional. There were real historical characters and events portrayed but not accurately. (The real Ragnar Lothbrook did not kill King Horic). Plus there's so much that we don't know from that era. The missing years of Ragnar would be fictional but potentially epic. There's several directions they could take. The spin off would end with the famous scene of the moment Ragnar's standing at the edge of Kattegatt looking on with the sun in his eyes as he's about to return.

    Spoiler warning :
I was actually so disappointed with the ending of the last season. No Rollo. No Valhalla reunions. No Floki as the new seer - which it seemed like they were going in that direction and then he just dies of old age and apparently he was demented and just crazy. Ivar shouldn't have died either. And WHY the fudge did Katya look exactly like Freydis? And Ivars baby? I mean. It should've ended 2 seasons ago. But oh well. Guess I'll forever have these questions

    • @sabeehehsen
      @sabeehehsen 2 года назад +2

Katya looked like freydis because it was how ivar saw katya. Katya did not actually look like freydis but it was a manifestation of ivars guilt that he saw her that way. Valhala may or may not have existed as ragnar in the end discusses with ecbert that he doesnt believe in their gods anymore as well as with the seer who appears as the blind man driving the carriage.

The show's creators are not so concerned with historical accuracy as you would see based on the costume design of the vikings which is not at all historically accurate. That being said when we consider a work of art there's always that element of how we perceive it and what it evokes in us. Who is to say that was literally Odin? Who is to say it was not? It is up to the viewer what he chooses to believe. That Ragnar was truly a descendant of Odin? Science tells us Gods do not exist but are you a rationalist or a romantic? So I guess if Ragnar wasn't real then his son's (who they have slot of factual information on) must not be real. Lol
Just because there isn't alot of information around today doesn't mean the guy didn't exist.
Alot of ppl tried to erase their enemies from ever being known or talked about.
They also told their own versions of a event that might have taken place, with a certain perception to it.
Does it mean their views are historically accurate?! No...but it is evidence that it did happen!!

History and legend is so much better than the soap opera that is this show. The original characters (Ragnar, Floki, Rollo, Lagertha, etc.) showed some promise and the producer made some small attempt to at least acknowledge historical research. Once Ragnar dies it just dissolves into a rather flaccid and all too modernised fantasy. The sons of Ragnar never really overcome the moody teenager mode (with the exception of Ubbe perhaps). Nothing about them really speaks of legend and fame - and no one would be writing sagas or songs about these boys. They are not imposing as warriors - nor do they command any respect as leaders. Any one of them would be easy to rebel and overthrow. The real Bjorn is the son of Augslag and becomes the father of Swedish kings - but no let's just make him a moody juvenile that forever pouts and can't find purpose. The real Harold Finehair becomes the first king of a newly unified Norway - but not let's just make him a one dimensional thicko that lucks his way into power and makes a succession of abysmal decisions. Even the real Sigurd has an interesting history - but no let's just make him a pointless sacrifice after building up his mystique. As for Ivar the Boneless - there is nothing in the show that even remotely resembles the man of legend. He gains his fame in Scotland and Ireland - even founding the city of Dublin - but no let's just make him a sulky psychopath and so physically unimposing that you can't figure out why nobody would just take him out and throw him into the fjord.
All these characters became legendary across many lands and founded many settlements - but no, let's just keep having them squabble in these eternal and moronic sibling rivalries over nothing. Let's have them keep trying to take the entirely mythical village of Kategat - forget Scotland, Ireland, Northumberland, East Anglia! And what's with the geography in this show? Alfred takes them from Winchester to the East Anglia settlement in a leisurely afternoon horse-ride. York is just a quick jaunt to Wessex - it can be done while a conversation is happening in another scene. And they hop between Norway, England, and Iceland with ease - in all weathers - and with hardly any provisions. It's almost as if the producers had no time for any research or logistics at all.
I wont go into the absurdities of dress - as it's been done in so many other threads. To go into battle without a helmet is just so infinitely stupid - and the whole concept of 'shield maiden' is moronically subjected to 21st Century identity politics - to the point where it's forever cheapened. All the leaders in the series are so reckless that they wouldn't last five minutes in the 9th Century. Kings wandering around without retinues, being the first to charge into battles all the time, and pulling fresh armies out of their arses on a whim. How many times does Ivar start again in some new locale with no subjects or henchmen - and yet gains control of some army in the next scene? The whole Rus thing was a complete fantasy - almost insulting to their history with all the anachronisms. Characters like Ingrid, Eric, Grunhild that are complete throwaways - just going nowhere then fizzling out in badly written scripts. Let's bring in a new character named Erik - you mean Erik the Red? - lots of story there we can work with that - no just some stooge named Erik that will be a bland nice guy for a season then we'll turn him into a blithering idiot. Great!
I don't understand all the adulation on the finale - why are people impressed so easily? Bjorn's death was just a rip off of El Cid - and his character became so annoying and one-note (with his screwed up face) that it was a relief to see the back of him. Same with Ivar - the grande finale was completely cretinous. The pointless suicide in the middle of a battle where he had the numbers was completely out of character. There is so much history on Alfred's dealings with the Vikings that there is just no excuse for this dross. It was not some brilliant message-rich ending - there was no real epiphany with any of the characters (with perhaps the exception of Ubbe and Floki) - it was just a rather pathetic whimper ending where the writers didn't know how to tie it all up. These characters lived in the middle of history - they didn't have some grandiose notion of 'the end of the viking age' or the 'end of the age of heroes' - that is just silly retrospective modernism being forced on these characters. There are lots more stories around the growth of Iceland, the development of Norway and Sweden, the Kievan Russ and the Bulgars, the incursions of Vikings in the mediterranean (which was glossed over), and the development of Danelaw Britain. York was a major Viking fortress and it barely figures in the story - not to mention all the raids in Scotland, the Orkney Irelands, and coastal Ireland,.... all of which the show ignores in preference for numerous and repetitive moronic battles over Kattegat and Wessex (most of which is ahistorical!). In short, this series suffers the same fate as so many historical shows - the makers just don't have the bravery to try and show history but just pander to shallow modern tastes. I never felt in the 9th Century at any point in this series - it was always a soap opera full of contemporary attitudes and lazy anachronisms.

This is not true ! Rollo never ruled France ! Rollo kept his word and defended part of Normandy, mainly the Rouen area ( where he received land from the Frankish King ) against all invaders. In the Viking TV series , the story of Rollo is fairly accurate, except he didn't get along well with his Frankish wife Gisla and the attack on Paris... It is true that the Duchy of Normandy became quite powerful and his descendants played a major role in Europe....The Normands even invaded England with William the Conqueror , ending at the same time the Viking Era, forever ! Quite strange that originally a Viking, ( Norsemen ) he would put a final end to all Viking raids in Europe.

Even Björn Järnsida is called a saga-king, here in Sweden, because most of the tales of him comes from the sagas.
