Yep I love just for that it show how desperate they are and it show how they need to use every little thing they have and can’t spare anything for protection and stuff like that
District 9 was awesome and so was the Mech. Even though it was only piloted by an amateur it managed to wreak havoc. Imagine an experienced pilot in it...
Doan08 To be shoved in to a cockpit designed for anotomy for totally different species. To have a variety of diffrent kind of probes and sensors pierce your skull and spine. To bleed continuosly all over the place whilst piloting the machine through a fog of mind numbing pain and agony - Yey. Wikus was seroiusly injured entering the vehicle and would probably have died with out the metamorphosis part - which btw was the only reason why he could operate it or use any of the alien artifacts.
District 9's mech is by far the best ever shown on film. Aside from the mech in Aliens, the others felt fake and over the top. But in District 9 it felt so real and organic. I like how it was grounded in it's interaction in the slum environment, as opposed to some CG background. Moreover, it being Alien technology just made it so cool. It was also the perfect climax for such a superb film
EXOs, or I assume exo-skeletons, are light and designed to fit around parts of the wearer, improving strength and sometimes speed, a great example would be the EXO-Suits from COD Advanced Warfare. Power Armor is bigger, heavier, and cover the entire body (there can be some gaps.) Fallout4 Power Armor or the Mjolnir Armor are great examples. A mech is typically large and requires the user to sit down, these range from smaller Titans to huge Jaegers.
@@chavezreal This is actually very false. A mech counts as an exoskeleton, in real life these already exist usually used in some type of construction to carry heavy weight(not everywhere obviously. They're a different type of exoskeleton called 'Powered Exoskeleton'. Nonetheless, they're exoskeletons. Exoskeletons, atleast the ones you've attempted to talk about only talk about the first three or four types.
Though if it was, I bet that it years to reverse engineer the technology, had enough money to fund any projects, and a lot more time to make any sort of mech of their own
At first didn't care to see District 9, but once I did it soon became one of my all time favorite movies. The mech fight scene is EPIC! I so much want to see a sequel to this AWESOME movie! Come on sequel! You left us wanting more! ;)
Totally agree with the #1 choice. Overall, the climax of District 9 was one of the best in all sci-fi. But the best part was the complete transformation of Sharlto Copley's character Wikus fromm a milquetoast company man to a raging, avenging (almost literal) killing machine. Most actors require several films in order to demonstrate a range similar to Copley's, just an extraordinary bit of acting.
Thanks for including Robo Jocks. This oldie movie is rather funny, and it does a lot with a low budget and the special effects of its time. I recommend it even to you young sophisticates of the CG era.
I didnt like other starship tooper movies after the first. the cgi seems to have been downgraded from the first and the storyline gets worse and worse.
So glad you included ROBOT JOX! Used to watch that movie and the classic Knight Rider series every weekend time. What about the mechs in Star Wars... too mainstream?
AsianGlow Good shout. Yeah the Scout Walkers in Return Of The Jedi were pretty nimble mechs. Like you, i enjoyed Knight Rider at 5.35 every Saturday evening. Star Wars is probably where the love started for me. Either that or the robots in the original Transformers animation series. Robotech made the genre cooler though i think.
Really glad you put Robot Jox in there, as that is one of the best giant robot/mech movies in history (yes, despite being dated and corny). Rather disappointed that Starship Troopers 3 made it in there though, as the mechs were slow and clunky, the CGI was garbage (like the movie), and there was nothing particularly impressive about them. I can't agree with District 9 getting the top slot either. It's cool, but easily forgettable.
Great collection, thanks. Remember about "Chappie" and one of the final bad guys, it was also worth looking at. Neil Blomkamp does know how to film mechs, he should do a Battletech/Mechwarrior movie.
thank you for including robot jox in this line up. its a bit corny but one of my fav movies from when i was a little kid. love to see a reboot of it. lol
If this video was released two months later in 2014, then I think the mech suits in 'Edge of Tomorrow' would have definitely earned a spot in this top 7.
omg i still remember watching robot jox when i was a very small kid. that was my first robot movie. it's basically just like pacific rim but without kaiju.
I kind of like the Type D mech from the mini-series Dark Soldier D. A Russian power armor, stolen by the protagonist when the wall fell, and upgraded by a scientist he hires. Armed with both Russian and American heavy infantry weapons for the time, he used it to fight everything from an giant alien chicken to the Type C version.
Going into this, I thought, "They'd better make yeagres #1. Anything else would be ridiculous." And then they came in at #2. When District 9 showed up, I said, "Are. You. Kidding me." Actually, that District 9 mech looks pretty darn awesome. Points for the Vortex shield.
I certainly agreed with your number 1 spot. I remember Robot Jox but I don't think I would have it in there. I would have put the Live. Die. Repeat suits (Tom Cruise sci fi flick) in there in it's place.
Robot Jox had to be in there. In fact I watched this video specifically to make sure it was. It was the only pre-2000, non-animated mech movie. It's not great, but it has its moments. Anime certainly did better for mech action at that time though.
ZacGaming OK. Yes. From that point of view, a sort of 'history of mech movies'. Sure. Hats off to Robot Jox. They did it early and, for the time, did it well. I'm just judging the mechs by what pushes my jaded post Jurassic Park tastes. Oh, and yeah, anime. I thought he was leaving that out on purpose.
well, lots of these mechs have been inspired by gundam. by this I mean that gundam started the concept of humanoid mechas built as military devices, made for fighting other mechas : the "real robot" style.
bio-mech from District 9 is the best. This thing can decimate the whole crowd of soldiers just with one shot from chain-cannon, or machinegun. The rocket-system is able to destroy some area of buildings or hostile vehicles. It can even catch bullets by using kinetic-forcefield. More importantly, this mech can be automated to execute commands by remote control! The only flaw is: mech is bad against armor-pierce shells (like was from high-caliber sniper rifle in movie). But still - this mech got awesome design, large amount of variative weapon systems. And high mobility.
Should make a list of all the mecha in live action films and tv shows. Like to go with Robot Jox there was also Robot Wars and Robo Warrior. Also, how can you not include Star Wars?
Because whereas a powerloader or a amp suit is somewhat feasible pacific rim is literally impossible, i love pacific rim but it’s completely ridiculous
Approximately 95 was a movie about giant robots. In the story they run by people, and this is one of the robotic arm torn off, the driver got out of the cab and started her tune. The enemy came closer, and when he came, goodie has closed electrical circuit that would have worked hand and hit the enemy robots. Who remembers the name of this movie?
ambers sucker punch mech. rhino from the amazing spiderman. technically animated but with CG instead of full lineart - Appleseed (both films) im sure i will remember more lol.
JpiaPlaysMc | Road to 500 Subs! Because the District 9 mech is way cooler. Great list of movies though... Reminds me when I watched Robot Jox on VHS with subtitles when I was young living in Poland still, ahh memories. Seemed so bad ass back then, can't imagine it was all just stop motion with tiny robots.
Sci-Film 7 why you all act like Titanfall is the only game that have mechs? it's hardly even one of the good ones... Armored Core, Mechwarrior 4 and Shogo? among other...
Personally I like the loader from Aliens, the mech from District 9, and the Pacific Rim mechs. Ive always LOVED Robot Jox, it has so much good script and acting and so much bad acting/script writing; but you just know those model animators put their heart into the movie. Theres a lot of other mechs movies around though.
Well, when Battletech gets onto the big screen, then it would outpace everyone. It has powered armor, mechs, and mini-mecha of all kinds. Then again, House Steiner and it's infamous Assault Scout Lance. :P
Holy shit! I remember watching Robot Jox as a kid, but could never remember the name. Everyone I ever asked didn't know either. "You know, the one with the giant fighting robots?" So glad I found this video and the name of that movie, I'll have to watch it again someday!

Gotta love them Matrix-APUs with their exposed pilots, hydraulics and ammo belts.
Ahah what were they thinking
Matthew cause it feels badass like you're Rambo firing machine guns shirtless
The APU's from the second Renaissance look a lot better.
Yep I love just for that it show how desperate they are and it show how they need to use every little thing they have and can’t spare anything for protection and stuff like that
Pacific rim is not 2009!!!idiot
District 9 was awesome and so was the Mech.

sanakassara I think he means piloted by a prawn warrior. That thing would not escape the mnu then, it would just take them all out insted
TraiIerRedux Sure, if taken out from the context. Seems to me that he should have mentioned that part.
sanakassara
It is a Prawn weapon. I thought it would be obvious that I mean a experienced Prawn Pilot.

exos and mechs... not always the same.
True
Some people claim they are. They are completely different

Yeah pretty spot on. I might re-order that a little, but number 1 is The district 9 mech - that is just awesome!
District 9 is basically the prequel Titanfall lol.
ikr

The fight concept was cool. Would love to see something like that with current CGI
Gonna watch district 9 again this weekend thanks to this list :)

The most practical suit being the one from district 9. Avatar mechs look like they can be taken down by AT weapon easily.
Avatar mechs weren't meant to fight a race with AT weapons, though. Even though this comment is a year old I still am dumb enough to reply.
And I'm dumb enough to leave a comment a year ago.

lol they forgot to strap machine guns
Wow! Props for putting Robot Jox on there! Not many people have seen it, but it is my favorite mech movie.
Mecha Godzilla should have made the list
but still good job on the vid
the undead jester, is mecha Godzilla piloted? Because if not it wouldn’t have made the list
This list is awesome. District 9 deserves to be number 1 that mech was very scientifically thought out
