Hua Chenyu is an artist and not just a singer. He is conveying the emotions and struggles he had as a child to wanted to be loved but rejecting it at the same time. He is not just covering the originals singers song. He made this song his own. This performance is so captivating. I have seen it countless times and it never gets boring. He is a composer as well. This is one of his "performance" pieces. You either like, or don't like dramatic performances. But, it's amazing how many people from so many different Western countries love Hua Hua. We are bored of Auto-turned singing. He's actually a very good musician. Plays piano, percussion, woodwind, guitar and lots more. This was a haunting song with haunting performance. As others say, he has struggled with Mental Health issues. And, yes, sometimes cracking a note can be more emotional for the listener than perfection. Yes, Thom Yorke does same technique of cracking notes. (Hua Hua grew up listening to Radiohead, Muse, Linkin Park). Have you seen Hua Hua when he was younger? When his International fans found him. It was not his looks, but his personality and talent which drew us to him. He has become a swan in recent years But, that was AFTER we loved his music. Quite a lot of us are older, and bored of Western mainstream music. We've lived through multiple genres from Rock & Roll to Pop, to Punk, New Romantics, Glam Rock, Rock, Metal, Hip Hop, Rap, Reggae.... And, Hua Hua holds our interest much more than current Stars in the West. Maybe you'd like his Symphony Concert if you like tight music.
He screamed in this song with painfulness, anger and desperation. He has a lonely childhood. His parents divorced when he was only 2 to 3 years old. He lived with his father but his father was always on the road of business trip. Hi from Australia. My first time watching you. I'm rather surprised by your lukewarm reaction. I know and love the original song too. But I also appreciate this interpretation as a daring reimagining and unique art piece. Yes, it is theatre, but importantly it successfully channels confronting emotions and renders us spellbound. You question his singing? As he holds those impossibly long plaintive notes, we too hold our breath and are urging him to breathe! breathe! We also want the monk to breathe, to not despair. You question his piano skills? What seems simple is actually complex. May I suggest you try playing that painfully repetitive, ponderous rhythm and at the same time sing legato, then switch to sonorous pitch changes, head voice, chest voice, breath notes, and the crazed crescendo that is actually explicitly and mindfully controlled. This is complex musicianship. Of course we all like different things, and you seem like nice guys. I guess the point of reaction videos is to open our minds a bit and to generate some discussion and awareness. Hua Chen Yu is unique and charismatic. A musical genius. As part of his international fan base, my joy is in being constantly surprised and excited by him, and never disappointed.
Hi! Thanks for sharing. Questioning is too strong a word. We were just sharing thoughts on his singing and piano skills. It's interesting to know how people from all over the world resonate with him. Appreciate it.
He actually has struggled with mental health issues for much of his life. If you dive into more of his work, you'll see that he does use his music to address mental health issues - both his own experiences and others, as a way of helping people. He also isn't concerned with perfection in his performances - he performs each song in the nature it is intended, as he is in the moment, and sometimes that does result in what is defined as being "pitchy" or perceived as acting. For me, the appeal is that he is a genuine artist, unafraid of being vulnerable and he faces his critics with candor. I've also heard some describe him as arrogant or egotistical because of the way he accepts the extreme adoration and praises of his fans, but understanding the relationship between him and his fans would require learning more about the journey they've been through together, from the start of his career on SuperBoy 2013 to now. And he's really okay with people not understanding him and why he makes the personal and musical choices that he does - he's never allowed his critics to define his path. One performance of his to help understand his mindset regarding this exact issue is Black and White Artist: ruclips.net/video/HdspblZcwcs/видео.htmlsi=67ihCU8XdRjgERmK Hope you guys will check it out as well as more of his work. You might end up being impressed. This one performance is a tiny fragment of what he's put out into the world.
Oh, and I'm an avid fan of his from the US, and can attest that he has fans all over the world. We love him not just because of his physical appearance, but because he is real and sincere and over-flowing with talent.
Basta mirar el rostro de los espectadores para darse cuenta cómo cautiva con su actuación. Soy una admiradora, de Hua Chenyu desde sudamérica; que lo escucha sin preconceptos.

We appreciate him because he is not like no other and he dares to not conform to conventional music. I love essentric.
I prefer Hua's version than the original. I heard his first before listening to the original singer. Anyway, he makes this song his own and same for all his covers. Would it not be boring to do an exact same cover. Music is not limited to just singing or else i can just listen to the CD at home. Where is the artistry, the innovation in that case. This is art, not just singing and the whole performance leaves you sitting on the edge. He is a composer, a musician and a complete artist who gives back to his fans .People should listen to less marketing account, rumours and be influenced. He can play several instruments like piano, guitar, flute, drum etc and his playing the piano is not randomed.
Hmmm, I think your video proves one thing, and that is having a prejudiced view of Hua Chenyu will make one discover problems less than 2 minutes into this performance. The Japanese man who actually watched it without any preconceived idea about Hua and the song, gave it a chance without offering an opinion less than 2 minutes into the song. It also not helpful to view Hua's performance and expecting him to deliver Cui Jian's original rendition. Why, we might as well just listen to Cui Jian's CD huh. Hua has performed this song numerous times, all differently. This performance is a performance in a singing competition made for entertainment, a bit of drama makes such shows more interesting. We can sit down quietly, listen and watch it and contemplate. There are various ways to look at one thing.
@@peggy_tan The Chinese guy believed Hua Hua should have re-arranged and sung it as how he put it "if I was him, I wouldn't make it so melodic..." However, he isn't Hua Hua and doesn't know him at all and yet had the cheek to assume higher music knowledge. He inadvertently exposed his narrow-mindedness because different people have different levels or degree of tolerance for pain or of how one thing affects them. Take for example the song by Chen Li "Flammable and Explosive" which had been covered by so many artists. Nearly all took from the song the essence of women's struggle, with conflicting signals and expectation which made a lot of women quite tough, resilient, determined and stronger. However, when one cover made the protagonist sound pitiful, whiny and desperate, that's when I call that cover a failure despite pitch-perfect singing. Some like it because they have the tendency to use pity and sympathy to gain favour. The Japanese fellow is more knowledgeable and mature in musicality than that Chinese fellow who seems to over-compensate for something. It was cringey when he spoke about freedom in connection with Cui Jian singing "Fake Monk".
Hey, thanks for your comment. Knowing the original well, I was sure to compare both versions from the very beginning, and I don't find it a problem. Reactions are about natural responses. Mine is from someone who knew the original; the other's who didn't. Isn't this a normal phenomenon and part of the fun to watch a reaction video? In addition, I didn't expect him to do exactly the same way as Cui Jian did; in fact, I offered personal opinions on how the melody could be even more different.
@@siomonn_musique Comparing or preferring is nothing to frown upon. No one found that a problem. My interpretation is at the beginning he starts out slow to give the impression of his lonely feeling of isolation. His long held note that sounds monotone is feeling of trance or just numb with no feeling. When he laughs, he's beginning to go crazy. As the song progresses he his fustrations
Yeah, I just noticed that you've applied the western concept to a non-western name. All his foreign fans, non-Chinese are able to say his name in the correct order. I think it won't cause you an iota of pain to put it right. It's Hua Chenyu. Thank you lads for the reaction.
@@siomonn_musique He always introduces himself as Hua Chenyu and why would he write his name in the western order? Isn't he Chinese from China? Only some Taiwan fan club applied the western concept to this name, for God knows why.
I just noticed that, too hahaha.... Hua isn't his last name but his surname or family name. The "last name, first name" is a concept for western names. Thanks for your sharp observation 😉
I, for one, enjoyed your reaction. In my opinion, there are different emotions expressed in any form of art with which we connect based on our past experiences and is perfectly fine to not connect with an artist while connecting with another. Sometimes we deem other people emotions as not being "real" simply because we have never experienced something like that and we cannot even imagine how others can feel that way so we feel like they're faking it. I find Hua always being very sincere in his art, sometimes he may even restrain a little bit in his performances and you can feel that he is holding back but for the most part he is true to himself. The reason why so many foreigners connect with his music even if we do not speak chinese, is because we can relate and hence feeling everything just through the music itself. Therefore, I totally understand why you did not connect with his performance and it seemed over the top to you, but for many people that have been there it doesn't seem over the top at all. It accurately portraits exactly what we have felt at one point in our lives and is a sad reality not a brag. I would happily watch more Hua reactions from you guys's perspective if you choose to do so and please don't feel pressured to like what other people like if you don't resonate with it. There are many artists out there to connect with and it's perfectly fine to have your preferences
Thank you for being so understanding. I think your words are spot-on. It is the lyrics that threw me off, which were very specifically about a situation that I don't think was true of Hua. I guess his own tunes wouldn't have such an issue.
@@siomonn_musique I actually disagree, I think the lyrics make perfect sense with what HuaHua experienced during his life as they are very metaphorical and can be seen from a perspective of not wanting love and affection while deep down really craving that love and affection and this inner conflict can turn someone insane. There is an interview worth watching that Hua gave on the Singer right before the performance where he explained how he really related with the original song and why he chose to express those lyrics in a manner that felt true to himself. Hope that the amount of negative comments did not bother you too much, all the fans are just trying to defend the "honor" of their favorite artist.
All i know this song was very painful for Hua per interview, because he had to re-live his past dark days. He said he tried to use reverse pyschology to make sure if you see someone like this , you need to show concern. that is why he made it so emotional. You got problem with that? If you do , I challenge you to go on Singers show, oh wait, you not qualified I guess. But you could post a fake monk version. so we could critique , DO IT !!! I am sure you would do better than Hua , and your acting will be balanced and real right ? do it , post your own video of fake monk. I want to see you out do Hua on this song
Speaking for myself, but possibly other Western Hua Chenyu fans, I discovered him on Singer 2018 watching for Dimash. He figured prominently in Dimash's "Stranger" performance when displaying unchecked admiration while watching him. I have since enjoyed Hua and the richness of Chinese popular music culture in general..However, Dimash's talents and performance skills are unsurpassed in their variety and artistry, although music is known to be a highly subjective experience. While Hua Chenyu's songs largely draw on personal pain, Dimash's lyrics - whether his own or others' - about love, longing, pain, worldly wisdom or war, are of a universal nature that he masterfully transmits as his own experiences. The mark of an old soul and a true artist.
Ähm, Dimash sung Hello at Singer 2018 😅. Stranger came out nearly 3 years later ? I never saw a video of HuaHua listening to Stranger but you can give me a link if there is one 😊 Hua Hua has lots of songs which rooted in his own experiences, true. That he has experienced things like depression himself is what makes his songs like the mental health and healing trilogies so effective and is helping people to overcome bad times. But he is by far not only singing about or composing songs about these topics. He has lots of songs about other topics too. For example his song against war: Warm House. Songs from him talking about to take better care of our planet: Bullfight, God Tree. Songs about hope: Arrival, Growing towards the sun. His letter to god: Salt of the earth. Song about a philosophical question ( Theseus paradox) Ship of Theseus.... just to mention a few. Dimash is not the only old soul and true artist out there. Hua Chenyu is a true artist too. And there are more like Aurora, Ren, Angelina Jordan..... and many more. Hua Chenyu is by far my favorite true artist so and the only one I fly around the world to experience his amazing outstanding Mars concerts. 😊
@@vijandrav.6095 Appreciate your reply Vijandra! Had to laugh at this person's comment, not even knowing which song D sang or speaking about HuaHua without knowing what his repertoire consists of. And I didn't see HuaHua in awe at D, he was super tired in this episode and couldn't wait for it to finish. It is HuaHua's versatility in composing his beautiful music that is unsurpassed.
@@vijandrav.6095 Vijandra, I discovered Dimash 1 1/2 years ago but I’ve since pretty much covered his repertoire, including the Singer shows and the training sessions with the contestants on various Chinese channels. Hua Chenyu was definitely there, but the other person may be correct that it was in the 2018 Hello performance that he was, albeit tired, in awe of Dimash. The Stranger performance I refer to where Hua Is also listening with the others in the background (there is a glimpse of him reacting) is on YOUKU Shine! Super Brothers S2 YOUKU SHOW-Get APP and it went online in 2021. In an interview Dimash talks about his experience in China when he spoke hardly any English, nor Chinese, in reference to Stranger, which led me to assume that he performed it there before Sochi, also because it’s quite a different presentation. So, sorry if I mashed my dates and recollections a bit. But it does not detract from my basic points.

My interpretation is at the beginning he starts out slow to give the impression of his lonely feeling of isolation. His long held note that sounds monotone is feeling of trance or just numb with no feeling. When he laughs, he's beginning to go crazy. As the song progresses he his fustrations
Wow! I wish I had said this in the video.
Love Hua Hua ❤
you guys are~ personally i don't feel what you feel at all. it is a great performance to me
花花❤❤
华晨宇当然有海外歌迷了,毕竟有品位的人也是有不少的。
Yeah, I just noticed that you've applied the western concept to a non-western name. All his foreign fans, non-Chinese are able to say his name in the correct order. I think it won't cause you an iota of pain to put it right. It's Hua Chenyu. Thank you lads for the reaction.
I didn't know he used the Chinese way to spell his name.
@@siomonn_musique He always introduces himself as Hua Chenyu and why would he write his name in the western order? Isn't he Chinese from China? Only some Taiwan fan club applied the western concept to this name, for God knows why.
Please correct his name placement it is Hua Chenyu. The last name is placed first. Thank you .
I just noticed that, too hahaha.... Hua isn't his last name but his surname or family name. The "last name, first name" is a concept for western names. Thanks for your sharp observation 😉
i feel is good at acting crazy , no because i 've been around crazy people, but because believe it
I, for one, enjoyed your reaction.
@@NahIamgood Wow, you've gone really deep into this song.
Don't worry. There are much more from other people's fans in other videos. 😂

I challenge you to go to every reactionist's channel who voices different opinions from yours and ask them to do the same thing you asked us to do.
silly!
maybe react to one of his compositions: Qi Tian singer 2018

I love Hua Hua’s music ❤️🌺🌺
@@vijandrav.6095
Vijandra, I discovered Dimash 1 1/2 years ago but I’ve since pretty much covered his repertoire, including the Singer shows and the training sessions with the contestants on various Chinese channels.
@@makila7715 And what exactly is your basic point? Dimash is an old soul and true artist and Hua Hua is not? 😅 Because that firstly is not true and secondly wouldn't be very nice. Just imagine I would make a comment like yours the other way around under a Dimash reaction....... Dears would went nuts.... 😮 You are a Dear and that is fine. You like Dimashs music the most, also fine. You think Dimash is the only old soul and true artist in the world..... ok I can accept that as your opinion but not as a fact. Because he is not in my opinion. If you want to put your favourite artist on a pedestal please do it under a Dimash reaction. 😉
@@makila7715 You are mistaken, Hua Chenyu has never participated in any way in Youkou Show
