- I get up early for a morning of wildlife photography on the Veluwe. I'm in luck as I get close to a few wild boar, and not much later I find stag beetles. These giant insects are amazing! Along the way I share some of my fieldcraft tips.

Love the wild bore photo! In our local woods we have a very aggressive/protective female so I have no desire to go looking fore them, but they certainly make a good subject.
They are quite tame here. As long as people keep away, especially when they have these cute little ones :)

Sony has a tendency to lift the greens. Most of the time I tone them down a bit but I think I didn't this time...

Oh Steve, I bought a Røde NT USB. Such good audio! Somewhere in October first vlogs with voice over using that microphone... This one has that 'full sound' I was looking for :)

Good spot on those Stag Beetles Jeroen, not the easiest to photograph though. Love the image of the Wild Boar 👍

Those Stag beetles are very impressive. I particularly liked the image at 13:05 with the crown of the tree in the background and the pincers ofthe beetle standing out so dramatically; top shot. Perhaps a little lift of the shadow area under the beetle?? Or maybe its just the way RUclips has presented it. Lovely image anyway.

I think that the stag beetles are really cool. They are not so easy to find anymore. As a child I used to see a lot more of them.. nowadays I feel lucky if I spot some once a year.
Regarding the boars: how do you know what is a safe distance? I must admit that I am always a bit scared of the prospect of stumbling upon them while alone.. they seem to be amongst the few animals in Europe that will attack you if surprised. A bear or wolf would usually try to get away.. I had those encounters and it was always the case. However, I did not "face" any boars until now and I am unsure about how safe it is.. could you share some more of your experience regarding this?
Stag beatles are doing better here in the Netherlands I think... Awesome animals!
Attacks from wild boar do happen here. And the result can be quite nasty... I always 'read' the animal. Once they keep looking at me and make that 'snoring' sound I know that they do not appreciate me being around. But to be honest I never had that happen. I think most important is to respect them. If I would walk towards them to make photos for example they could quite easily feel agitated with those little ones around...
Jeroen I'm going to the Netherlands at the end of next month, do you have any tips for wild life photography?
Oh that depends so much on what you like to photograph... Birds? Then maybe the oostvaardersplassen, or the pier at IJmuiden. For mammals somewhere on the Veluwe....
