I watched the first episode I knew I personally had to leave it alone when the opening scene was the dad in the shower singing the original Good Times theme song with a roach. I’m definitely not this show’s target audience

@chrispbacon1167 there most definitely is a difference. The equivalent of a black family guy is the Cleveland show, they had messages, had some stereotypes about the family and showed other ones throughout the show, but it wasn't a walking cesspool of those most fked up stereotypes and exaggerated animation. I'm not sure how you can compare family guy with this. I can't honestly think if anything to compare it to. It's not making fun of everything and everyone. It's making fun of black people. Not even subtly or satirical like boondocks and even they had messages as they addressed certain things in the community or the US period. They are not the same... at all. Maybe people's standards got lower.

@@chrispbacon1167 The way you said "blk people make fun of blks" and not we make fun of ourselves says a lot about where your head's at about this show. It wasn't made by a black person - even the original is stolen work. Do research. There's layers to this, and most black people can feel that the energy is off.

It’s bad enough that this ish will be streamed in America but this will be streamed internationally. People across the globe who have never interacted with black Americans will see this and the negative stereotypes of us will be further reinforced. Smdh!
    Edited to add:
So I went to IMDB and this cartoon will be streamed on the Netflix platform in these other countries: Australia
Brazil
Canada
Germany
Ecuador
Spain
France
United Kingdom
India
Italy
Japan
Mexico

And that is just for this “opening weekend”. Netflix could add more countries later on.
They spoil the well before foreigners even personally interact with African Americans.

Yo, even as a pasty white dude, I hate this remake, or whatever you want to call it, with a passion. I would almost say- offended.
I grew up watching the original "Good Times" with my father, we ourselves lived in a housing project. It was so refreshing as a kid to see honest, hard-working poor folk just trying to survive and deal with the same issues so many people we knew around us (and we) had. It was a show I could really connect with and who's characters pain and happiness I could feel when i watched.
This show is a disgrace to all of that, and IMO anyone involved should feel ashamed. This looks like a tacky cartoon some edgy middle schoolers threw together. Just absolutely spits on everything the old show accomplished and stood for.
I legitimately think what happened is some out of touch rich people saw the concept and went "Hahaha poor people stuff. Thats funny. I used to be poor." and agreed to be on/make this show.
Even the celebs who grew up poor haven't struggled in over 20 years. They're sell outs. They should stick to garden parties and cucumber sandwiches and other privilege people things. I dont think Wanda Sykes has ever struggled in her life- i pretty sure she grew up well off to begin with. She just panders.

You know I didn't prefer good times because I don't like continuing to watch "US" struggle, however I understand the symbolism behind everything they did...in keeping the black family together, striving for better in a society that constantly wouldn't allow us to be great...however, this new one...as an entertainer and writer I want to watch it simply for pov BUT I don't want to continue to add more toxicity than what I've already seen throughout my 38 years of life already. And I saw someone comment "this is how they see us" and that is my exact sentiment. I stopped watching love n hip-hop years ago because of this very reason. I didn't want to keep supporting ignorance. It's one thing to tell a story but where is the positivity... its almost as if the story being told is "you will NEVER rise as a community as long as this exists" and that isn't encouraging at all. It's frustrating man smh. We gotta do better for US

Well, grab your popcorn and settle in for the new animated series of the Evans family, where character growth takes a vacation and stereotypes take center stage! Because who needs character development when you can just press the reset button and watch them struggle like it's Groundhog Day?
I can imagine the creators saying, "Why let them live happily ever after when we can keep them in a perpetual loop of chaos and calamity? It's like a sitcom version of the movie 'Groundhog Day,' but with fewer laughs and more facepalms."
And why not sprinkle in some classic stereotypes while we're at it? Because nothing says "entertainment" like reducing rich, diverse characters to tired old clichés. It's like a buffet of bad decisions served with a side of disappointment.
Ah, the sweet smell of missed opportunities and dashed hopes. Who needs fresh ideas and genuine storytelling when you can just recycle the same old tired tropes? It's like watching a comedy of errors, except the only joke is on us, the audience. Hats off to the creators for turning a potential masterpiece into a dumpster fire of disappointment!

Very impressed you watched the whole thing. I didn’t get past episode one. I watched the original show after it was in syndication.
So they decided to recreate the children from the original show:
They kept the oldest the same. No surprise there.
The youngest boy was actually the militant of the family. He wrote the housing department when the building was falling apart. He was very studious, always reading and studying Black history when it was sorely lacking in his school. He protested an intelligence test, because it was racist. He got suspended from school for challenging the curriculum. He asked two FBI agents if they were looking for the man who killed Medgar Evers. His signature line was “Boy is a White racist word.”
The reboot took THAT character, and made him a drug dealer. And decided instead to give all those attributes to the middle child and only girl. 🤔

TLDR: I'm curious to see what the uproar is about and I'm hoping it's not as trash as everyone says.
I haven't watched the show, so I'm not speaking on that. I did watch the trailer and it seems like a lot of the disappointment comes from the fact that this iteration isn't aspirational. The OG version was a family living in the projects, but who somehow had hopes of getting out. This iteration SEEMS to be about a family that's been in the projects for YEARS and can't really imagine another way of being. The OG version could be aspirational because they were the first generation out of Jim Crowe and fully bought into the American Dream. This version has to grapple with horrible things they've normalized because they've known no other way. Life for most Black folks in the US is hard and it's getting harder and harder with each generation. I don't think TV should or can always be aspirational.

Man as a South African, me & my little brother were initially stoked when we stumbled upon this show on Netflix. I mean a comedy animation based on black folks that was refreshing. But by the time we got to episode 3 we were soo exhausted by the political Agenda they trying to sell. Plus we don't even understand that shit. The American culture war makes little sense from an African perspective.

It’s amazing how they keep trying to say biracial people are black but ironically, all we see in the cartoon of negative black stereotypes are dark skinned black people. I know biracial people can be dark as well, but amazing how Steph who could pass for biracial, knew not to allow people that look like himself or his kids in the horrible show! Further harming black people

The Norman Lear joke at the end was hilarious! Also, I won't watch this show. I did watch the OG Goodtimes. The whole point was that the family loved each other, pulled together, and wanted out of the ghetto. For them to say they are still in the same apartment 4 gen later is wild🤦🏽‍♀️. My favorite animated black cartoon is the original boondocks!

I have the entire original Good Times series on my media shelf. When I saw the trailer for the Netflix cartoon, I told myself, that's not Good Times AT ALL. As a youngster who came from a gang related Los Angeles environment, I didn't GET IT, when I was younger. Now that I look around and see the changes in the world and see that I am blessed to be HERE, I started to look at life differently and one thing that comes to mind when I see that trailer is the fact that, YES, people do still live in those environments, but if that is what you are used to seeing when you walk outside, WHY would you want to watch it on TV too? That makes no damn sense. It's not elevating black minds. Now, more than ever, is a time where I wish the youth of the black community would THINK and also think about their future. My past years have taught me that if you want an opportunity and there seems to not be one, then go MAKE ONE. I hate turning on the news and seeing stupidity from the youth of the black community, especially the smash and grabs that have gotten too popular in too many places.
Netflix should be ashamed of themselves. There really could have been an animated Good Times that attempted to capture the lightheartedness of the original show and it could have still been a childrens/family oriented cartoon, and I bet they would have had people, both young and old, tuning in the watch it. They missed their mark. Whatever this new show is that shares the same name is complete TRASH and it is actually harmful for the black community.

Grew up watching Good Times, went to school in Cabrini Green and at that time, we didn't know anything else. Now that many have made a way out, NOONE wants to see the terrible living conditions, crime, and poverty mindset.
I assumed they'd make it as a reboot of positivity and how they progressed, I WAS WRONG!!
ITS A HARD NO, for me 😢!!

I grew up watching Goodtimes, What's Happenin, the Jeffersons, even Fat Albert. They didn't seem so different from me and my family because they all were about family and respect and life lessons. The best show I've seen pull off a decent equal to those shows was "Everybody Hates Chris" The rest have just gone off the rails somewhere.

😂😂 I don't know. I didn't watch the original show so I came to it as an animation lover, and tbh- I didn't hate it. I found it better than VELMA, and I also saw some offensive stereotypes - but I thought it was a time piece until I saw them using smartphones .... So a few hitches here and there. Some episodes were awesome and others not. But all in all, I didn't hate it.
