@chrispbacon1167 there most definitely is a difference. The equivalent of a black family guy is the Cleveland show, they had messages, had some stereotypes about the family and showed other ones throughout the show, but it wasn't a walking cesspool of those most fked up stereotypes and exaggerated animation. I'm not sure how you can compare family guy with this. I can't honestly think if anything to compare it to. It's not making fun of everything and everyone. It's making fun of black people. Not even subtly or satirical like boondocks and even they had messages as they addressed certain things in the community or the US period. They are not the same... at all. Maybe people's standards got lower.

I watched the whole series and it had little hints of positivity. But, they are not telling a story that has not been told already. If anything, they should have named it something else. Cause, Good Times, it Definitely is not.
Good job, Chris. Bless you for your combination of patience and dedication in watching all 10 episodes, to present your informed opinion. I did watch the OG show, back in the day. I only made it through a few minutes of this atrocious, "remake"...nuff said....save for the perspective that a few stolen ideas do not comprise a remake. Thank you for recommending The Vince Staples Show; looking that up right now. Wishing you unlimited, joyous abundance. BAM!!! (Blessed and Multiplied)
TLDR: I'm curious to see what the uproar is about and I'm hoping it's not as trash as everyone says. I haven't watched the show, so I'm not speaking on that. I did watch the trailer and it seems like a lot of the disappointment comes from the fact that this iteration isn't aspirational. The OG version was a family living in the projects, but who somehow had hopes of getting out. This iteration SEEMS to be about a family that's been in the projects for YEARS and can't really imagine another way of being. The OG version could be aspirational because they were the first generation out of Jim Crowe and fully bought into the American Dream. This version has to grapple with horrible things they've normalized because they've known no other way. Life for most Black folks in the US is hard and it's getting harder and harder with each generation. I don't think TV should or can always be aspirational.
I really enjoyed the animation style and it's more insightful than it seems. Watched all 10 episodes. It's like Big Mouth of black ppl. Not holding my breath but i wouldn't be mad at a season 2.
I used to watch Good Times with my parents. They used to put on Good Times and The Jeffersons when I was little and I have warm memories of those episodes. I’m sad to see that family sitcom turn into what ever the heck you just described. I still am curious so because I like to torture myself, I’ve downloaded the first episode. I have also downloaded the Vince Staples Show at your suggestion. Wish me luck ! 😅
Naw it Steph's fault for putting his name on this trash!! He trying do what LeBron has done at least he picking better projects!! Not counting space jam, and house party 😂😂😂😂 those were bad!!
Man as a South African, me & my little brother were initially stoked when we stumbled upon this show on Netflix. I mean a comedy animation based on black folks that was refreshing. But by the time we got to episode 3 we were soo exhausted by the political Agenda they trying to sell. Plus we don't even understand that shit. The American culture war makes little sense from an African perspective.
I'm still trying to find 'The Lion King 3 1/2' on 4K UHD! LMAO. You handled this waaaaaay more polite than I would IF I were to even bother wasting time posting my own review.
I've seen every episode numerous times and still leave it on in the background, but I think it's mostly for nostalgia. There's a lot of dramatic crap in it that's just kind of a bummer.
I am just watching this review just to support you.i am not the target audience for that mess. I watched Good Times in the 1980s in 🇳🇬 Nigeria. I couldn't stand Jay Jay back then.
It’s amazing how they keep trying to say biracial people are black but ironically, all we see in the cartoon of negative black stereotypes are dark skinned black people. I know biracial people can be dark as well, but amazing how Steph who could pass for biracial, knew not to allow people that look like himself or his kids in the horrible show! Further harming black people
You should spend an hour or so watching the OG Good Times. Janet Jackson, ok??? Also, well written and well acted. Great review (and I need to scrub my brain of the image of Driving With Lactation) but you should've given just 1 star for the Titanic at the bottom of the bin... 🥴
The Norman Lear joke at the end was hilarious! Also, I won't watch this show. I did watch the OG Goodtimes. The whole point was that the family loved each other, pulled together, and wanted out of the ghetto. For them to say they are still in the same apartment 4 gen later is wild🤦🏽♀️. My favorite animated black cartoon is the original boondocks!
When it dropped, i went straight to Netflix and gave a thumbs down. But I am interested in quality opinions/reviews about it. Thx for taking the hit! lol
You forgot to mention the episode about the girl having a period, that’s something that’s never been done before normally they only make jokes about males growing up woman normally never get jokes about the time of the month, and yeah I watched the original, the original is timeless even though it was made so long ago it’s subject matter is still relevant today
All in the Family was an adaptation of a British comedy, Till Death Us Do Part. Creation credit, much like production credit in Hollywood, is just an extra percentage of royalties.
But young Janet Jackson is in Good Times...so maybe you should take a watch😊 And yeah, i dont believe they really put some of those things are in there that you mentioned🫣, so ill have to watch a bit. Not sounding like ill make it through a full episode though.
I have the entire original Good Times series on my media shelf. When I saw the trailer for the Netflix cartoon, I told myself, that's not Good Times AT ALL. As a youngster who came from a gang related Los Angeles environment, I didn't GET IT, when I was younger. Now that I look around and see the changes in the world and see that I am blessed to be HERE, I started to look at life differently and one thing that comes to mind when I see that trailer is the fact that, YES, people do still live in those environments, but if that is what you are used to seeing when you walk outside, WHY would you want to watch it on TV too? That makes no damn sense. It's not elevating black minds. Now, more than ever, is a time where I wish the youth of the black community would THINK and also think about their future. My past years have taught me that if you want an opportunity and there seems to not be one, then go MAKE ONE. I hate turning on the news and seeing stupidity from the youth of the black community, especially the smash and grabs that have gotten too popular in too many places. Netflix should be ashamed of themselves. There really could have been an animated Good Times that attempted to capture the lightheartedness of the original show and it could have still been a childrens/family oriented cartoon, and I bet they would have had people, both young and old, tuning in the watch it. They missed their mark. Whatever this new show is that shares the same name is complete TRASH and it is actually harmful for the black community.
Grew up watching Good Times, went to school in Cabrini Green and at that time, we didn't know anything else. Now that many have made a way out, NOONE wants to see the terrible living conditions, crime, and poverty mindset. I assumed they'd make it as a reboot of positivity and how they progressed, I WAS WRONG!! ITS A HARD NO, for me 😢!!
I grew up watching Goodtimes, What's Happenin, the Jeffersons, even Fat Albert. They didn't seem so different from me and my family because they all were about family and respect and life lessons. The best show I've seen pull off a decent equal to those shows was "Everybody Hates Chris" The rest have just gone off the rails somewhere.
Eddie Murphy’s The PJs the projects cartoon animated series was nothing like this. That was a respectable show. Good times should’ve been portrayed like that show. Good times cartoon is garbage stereotypical garbage.
I don't wanna kill any brain cells watching it. But I'm curious to know who is the father's parent I know James Evans Sr is the granddad. But who is the parent of this new character? Probably J.J.?😕
😂😂 I don't know. I didn't watch the original show so I came to it as an animation lover, and tbh- I didn't hate it. I found it better than VELMA, and I also saw some offensive stereotypes - but I thought it was a time piece until I saw them using smartphones .... So a few hitches here and there. Some episodes were awesome and others not. But all in all, I didn't hate it.
I watched the first episode I knew I personally had to leave it alone when the opening scene was the dad in the shower singing the original Good Times theme song with a roach. I’m definitely not this show’s target audience

Im dissapointed in the level of talent that thought this project was a good idea
Bro you’re freaking hilarious. Subbed!
Hiiii!! Thank you!!
Glad you did this so I don’t have to
I work for you
Thanks for putting me on to the Vince Staples show.
I really enjoyed the animation style and it's more insightful than it seems. Watched all 10 episodes. It's like Big Mouth of black ppl. Not holding my breath but i wouldn't be mad at a season 2.
Same. Like people are taking it way too seriously. It's one of those shows where you get a blunt and laugh your ass off. I'm not mad at it.
@@Gisellesmuseum Exactly! The baby being easily amused by baby things but at the same time still being a gangster drug dealer was hilarious to me.
Two stars seems extremely generous
Thanks for the review and saving my time!
i couldn’t even finish the first episode. i then looked up the executive producer and he was of course a white men
It's definitely Lebron's fault...😂
He ain’t low 😤
Naw it Steph's fault for putting his name on this trash!! He trying do what LeBron has done at least he picking better projects!! Not counting space jam, and house party 😂😂😂😂 those were bad!!
Man as a South African, me & my little brother were initially stoked when we stumbled upon this show on Netflix. I mean a comedy animation based on black folks that was refreshing. But by the time we got to episode 3 we were soo exhausted by the political Agenda they trying to sell. Plus we don't even understand that shit. The American culture war makes little sense from an African perspective.
PeeWee from Bebe's Kids (voiced by rapper Tone Loc) is the original adult baby
Basically showing us how everybody look at us. We need to wake up. Shit sad
I was so excited for a black animation… but I guess ill still have to wait lol
I'm still trying to find 'The Lion King 3 1/2' on 4K UHD! LMAO. You handled this waaaaaay more polite than I would IF I were to even bother wasting time posting my own review.
I didn’t get pass the first two minutes when I saw the father in the shower with a roach 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
You should review the original Good Times. My daughter (29) and i tried watching an episode and it was difficult to do so.
Damn that’s a super old show I don’t even know if I can do it lol
I've seen every episode numerous times and still leave it on in the background, but I think it's mostly for nostalgia. There's a lot of dramatic crap in it that's just kind of a bummer.
someone had to step on the grenade, damn bro.
🫡
I will watch your review because I have no intention on watching it. Can’t believe Seth Curry is apart of this.
I am just watching this review just to support you.i am not the target audience for that mess.
I watched Good Times in the 1980s in 🇳🇬 Nigeria. I couldn't stand Jay Jay back then.
Not into this whatsoever, but I AM into supporting your content 😊
I stan this comment.
I was hoping for the original characters. Thought they might update Florida and call her Flo-rida.
Lmao please don’t let them see this
😂😂😂
It’s amazing how they keep trying to say biracial people are black but ironically, all we see in the cartoon of negative black stereotypes are dark skinned black people. I know biracial people can be dark as well, but amazing how Steph who could pass for biracial, knew not to allow people that look like himself or his kids in the horrible show! Further harming black people
“Haven’t seen the show yet.” Bold of you to presume I’m gonna watch the show. XD
“Mother clock***joke was the one time I laughed😂😂😂
Lmao they caught you slippin huh
Eric Monte The Black Man that originally came up with the show - Good times was paid a million dollar and then properly. Black balled
Justice for him
You should spend an hour or so watching the OG Good Times.
Janet Jackson, ok???
Also, well written and well acted.
Great review (and I need to scrub my brain of the image of Driving With Lactation) but you should've given just 1 star for the Titanic at the bottom of the bin... 🥴
Not the Norman Lear joke 😂😂😂
Thanks for taking one for the team, Tait! Won't be watching.
I saw that it’s #6 in shows. I wonder if it’s bc people are enjoying it, or watching to see why people are saying it’s bad.
This video made me laugh too many times. Gotta subscribe
Hiiii! Welcome!
So if James is the grand dad than who is the actual dad or mom is it jj is it the other kids
All in the Family was an adaptation of a British comedy, Till Death Us Do Part. Creation credit, much like production credit in Hollywood, is just an extra percentage of royalties.
Sanford and Son was also based on a British show called Steptoe and Son.
@@keithfulkerson True
Could be worse they could announce
A season 2 after this like Velma.😂
But young Janet Jackson is in Good Times...so maybe you should take a watch😊 And yeah, i dont believe they really put some of those things are in there that you mentioned🫣, so ill have to watch a bit. Not sounding like ill make it through a full episode though.
I grew up watching the OG good times and the show cannot touch it.
Watch the original 70's show. Great stuff!
Steph Curry, what were you thinking!?!?
I grew up watching Goodtimes, What's Happenin, the Jeffersons, even Fat Albert. They didn't seem so different from me and my family because they all were about family and respect and life lessons. The best show I've seen pull off a decent equal to those shows was "Everybody Hates Chris" The rest have just gone off the rails somewhere.
Thank you for doing the Lord's work on ths Sunday. I refused to watch this bafoonery.
Let the church say, amen.
They let Stewie do everything under the sun with little of others awareness. They tell all this babies business in the first 5 minutes
It got green lit because Netflix thought they’d have the next family guy/American dad but instead got Velma
I was waitin on this one lolol good shit as usual
You’re the first person to praise the animation. The trailer did it for me as in to stay away
That was painful. It felt like a blow by blow replay of a boxing match. OUCH.
Lion king 3 1/2 hollering it was so ghetto and a mess 😂
You know bout them Walmart bins!
@@TaitsTake I know way too well 🤣
😂😂 I don't know.
