I used these consistently for 3 years. I’ll say this: your ears get very itchy, showers are annoying, your ears always feel dirty. You get constant ear infections, plus the skin in your ears sometimes rips as the audiologist takes them in & out every 4-6 weeks. Then you need to wait days or weeks for those wounds to heal, before the audiologist will put them back in. Sometimes they make feedback noises, so you need to go in for adjustments which can be annoying. They don’t function well in noisy environments with competing background noise (but this is the same with all hearing aids). Other issues, your ear hole stretches over time, the audiologist started me off on X-small, then increased to Small, then I ended up on Medium size, before they stopped me from using them altogether. My ear infections were too persistent, plus the bleeding & scabs. They’re better than nothing, they’re good cause they’re always in, you have a magnetic device to switch them on and off, but they’re annoying to wear. You do get used to them, but itchy, dirty ears, bleeding & infections were my ongoing issues.

I was an early adopter of the Lyric (pre-2010). I have a severe high frequency hearing loss due to industrial noise (over 40 years ago as a project engineer). I don't think my hearing can be corrected to more than 75% using typical hearing assist devices. That said, after fitting and tweaking of the Lyric, I was thrilled with the result. It was like having my natural hearing restored! Here's where it gets bad ... for some unknown reason, the device would degrade after about three weeks and needed to be replaced (under the subscription model which at that time was $3K/year, pre Phonak). This went on for the year, so I couldn't continue to run back for a new device causing me to return to conventional equipment because when the Lyric fails, it's like having a plug in my ear. My audiologist was very patient and even called the manufacturer rep to his office to offer advise and assistance. It's a shame because I still think of the Lyric as the best aid I've ever used. Currently I have had a Costco KS-9.0 (approximately 3 years) and for what it's worth a good device but not even close to the Lyric.

The Lyric hearing aid sounds like it would be perfect for those who are unable to insert a regular hearing aid, such as one who suffers from dementia or someone who does not have the manual dexterity required to handle a very small hearing device. I have a friend who is terrified of losing expensive regular hearing aids and does not wear hers every time she lies down for a nap, which is frequent. Therefore, she does not benefit from wearing hearing devices to stimulate her brain! I think she would greatly benefit from being able to wear something 24/7.

Ya... I have them right now.. Heres my Proposal.. I think they're great for helping with hearing, but until they stop working or dying, or when you get the sticky feeling inside your ear.. You can't take them out to clean your ears, or if they hurt you or you have to take them for whatever reason (well you can remove them yourself but placing them back in doesn't always work..) I have had to take them out myself and managed to get them back in though a couple of times though. Last time I had to take them out was because my left was hurting me, and as far as my right one, I had thought it had stopped working, but that was because my ear blocked up because came down with an inner ear infection apparently. (this was 2 and a half weeks ago) You just have to be prepared to always be running back to the audiologist basically.. Its been 6 weeks since I have got them and I have been running back to the audiologist almost every week so far..Although its been almost 2 weeks since last going back which is a record.. Sometimes I feel very skeptical when they give me anxiety that they will cause problems.. But they do help my hearing, If only they were more ideal..

I was an early adopter of Lyrics years ago, and absolutely loved the improved sound quality and convenience. My hearing has probably never been "normal" but I felt that Lyrics were the closest I would ever get. I would forget that I was even wearing aids. However, after experiencing the bleeding problem that you mentioned, I went back to regular aids. But I still miss those Lyrics and would encourage anyone who is interested to try them out.

I only needed a single Lyric. No big problems with earwax (and I generated a fair amount) or itching, and no bleeding. I never got an infection. Forgot it was in at times. I sweat a lot and Lyric handled that much better than the previous hearing aid with acrylic shell.
Cost is the big issue, I think partly because it includes 6 audiologist visits. (Also, one lesser issue: the most recent generation just stopped rather than giving low battery warning by changing sound quality, so we solved that by scheduling replacement just before the eight-week mark.)
That said, my previous hearing aid stopped working after my ear was splashed by an ankle-deep wave, and I'm active outdoors in all weather for work and exercise, so I don't expect to get the maximum life out of a different hearing aid. Also, the fact that they just replace it if it stops working, and it can't be lost can also save money.
One of my jobs requires a discrete hearing aid and I was extremely happy with that aspect, as well as durability, ease of use, and sound quality.

I've been reading Phonak documentation, watching RUclips videos, and reading comments like those associated with this video. One concern is that I always sleep on one side or the other. Has anyone had issues with this? It was mentioned briefly in the Phonak documentation and mentioned that sleeping on your back is ideal. For me, that's just not going to change. I haven't seen any comments accordingly so maybe it's just a non-issue???

I am a boating person near the water everyday. Is there a way to use Lyric and still be able to be in the water? I would think the electronics board would be sealed such that water would not be an issue, possibly de-watering the device is the real problem? Then is there another near invisible hearing aid (such as the tungsten fitted one that I should check out)? I have Tinnitus also which increases when my allergies are bothering me and decreases with a Zertec-D (fairly quickly after taking). You say the Lyric is analog, but "digitally programmable." What does this mean? Typically an analog amplifier is going to ingest an entire frequency range, and amplify the entire range equally. A digital device can process a frequency range, slicing it up and amplifying certain portions. So if someone has more of a deficit at the higher end, it can enhance that portion of the spectrum.
So, which are these? Are they analog amplifiers or digital signal processors. If the former, what makes them "digitally programmable?" Thanks!

Steam shower should be okay, however I haven't personally tested them in that specific environment. Not an issue with pressure equalization when flying. Head colds effect the middle ear space not the outer ear canal. If you get an ear infection, it would be for reasons other than the hearing aid. Definitely can't do submerged head swimming. That would definitely kill the device, however, some people use swim plugs over their lyric devices to protect them in the pool just incase

Not an expert, but I wear earbuds with my BTE hearing aids and it works just fine so I don't know why it wouldn't work there as well.

Lyrics may be a great product….for very few individuals.
My insurer/provider will no longer support Lyric….they claim that less than 5% of their client base have lyrics and this 5% accounts for 75% of their service appointments….

If their 5% of Lyric patients account for 75% of their service appointments, they are doing something HORRIBLY wrong. 😬

    • @2204JCM

Its not about digital vs analog. Its about quality vs crap. Meaning weather its digital or analog has no bearing on quality.

So they have "improved sound quality," but not in environments with poor acoustics...??? 🤔

Very foolish comment. Poor acoustics affect everything in the audible spectrum including natural hearing.
