Those three songs (you should definitely listen to the other two) actually make reference to one another a couple of times, and the craziest thing is that the time stamps where the references happen are the same in both songs 🤯 Examples:
August at 2 mins 47 secs - “Get in the car…”
Betty at 2 mins 47 secs - “James get in…”
    (Side note - 2+4+7 = 13, which is Taylor’s favourite/lucky number)
Betty at 3 mins 13 secs - “Betty I’m here on your doorstep…”
Cardigan at 3 mins 13 secs - “And you’d be standing in my front porch light…”
    (Second side note - there’s the number 13 again. 3 mins 13 is also 193 seconds, and 1+9+3 = 13 😂)
The album is also 1 hour 3 mins long.
I keep remembering more and having to edit. Cardigan is also referenced in Betty at 4 mins 29 secs - “Standing in your cardigan…”
Taylor Swift is said to have an IQ of 160. This makes perfect sense when you look at crazy details such as these. She’s got a real thing for numbers and links.

She, Jack and Aaron work amazingly well together. And of course once fans realized Taylor created a teenage love triangle they couldn’t wait to find out who’s perspective each song was from, and it’s like she created more than good music, but almost a fun game too where we really needed to listen so we could grasp what each character was going through and why they made the choices they did. I really like that even though “August” is from the perspective of the “other” woman, Taylor doesn’t consider her a bad person. You mentioned Taylor performing “Betty” (James’s pov) at an award’s show, and it is really beautiful. Worth checking out. But so is Long Pond of course. (And I know James is young, but he’s still a tool imo haha). “Cardigan” (from Betty’s pov) has a gorgeous music video that you’ll want to watch! Taylor ramps up her use of metaphors and imagery for sure in “Cardigan”. Great reaction to “August”.

Another powerful set of songs reflecting age difference is “Dear John,” which Taylor (19) wrote after briefly dating John Mayer (32). Then “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda,” which Taylor wrote when she was the age of Mayer when they’d dated. More reflective on how weird it was for a 32 y/o to date a 19 y/o.

It's funny you mentioned hip hop. Taylor enjoys listening to it and we've seen her enjoy Kendrick Lamar's music. So much so that he was featured in her song "Bad Blood" from the Reputation album.
To get back to the song here, when I first heard it, it did bring on a sense of nostalgia that for some reason those early 90s Folgers coffee commercials came to mind lol. But this album, if you listen to it from beginning to end, you can kind of hear some early 90s influence on a few tracks.
The album is quite nice. I like listening to it around the house or driving around town or when the weather has changed and I'll sit there and look at the sky and trees etc. The sister album, Evermore, is a bit darker (fall/winter) while Folklore is a bit lighter (spring/summer).
Also, the songs she does for Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions are close and true to the studio version. The only difference is the fact that this is live whereas the album version is more cleaner, obviously.

Reflecting on why you didn't connect with ATW was at a depth that showed an open mind and understanding, and that's all swifties that watch reactions truly want. Some swifties don't enjoy ATW either. I am going through your playlist atm, and ATW is still ahead. You're sort of musing about it at the 7 min mark. It gets worse than just the age difference; a year earlier than her 2010 relationship with Gyllenhaal, she'd had a relationship with John Mayer, also more than a decade older than the teenaged Taylor. But she'd turned 18, officially an adult. So, she ignored her parents' advice. Some of her partners over the years have been quite a bit older (but a couple --- Styles, and Alwyn --- were a couple years younger.) Also, part of the pattern: until Travis Kelce, all of her partners were experienced performers; either musicians or actors. She never really dated outside of music and Hollywood; people whose work she admired before she ever met them.

If you do react to "Betty," do the Long Pond version first, so you get this little tidbit about the song beforehand. Taylor performed it at the 2020 or 2021 CMA (country music ass'n) Awards show, just her and a guitar and a harmonica player. There's nothing particularly remarkable about the performance, though.
Summarizing the teenage love triangle between Betty, James, and "Augustine":
The song "August" is written from the "other" girl's perspective as she relives and tries to understand what her and James' relationship even was.
The song "Betty" is written from James' perspective as he's trying to figure out if he can save his relationship with Betty after spending the summer with another girl.
The song "Cardigan" is written from Betty's perspective, decades later, looking back on that summer when it almost went wrong.
