Each band had a specific time limit for the performance, Queen rehearsed for a couple of weeks to perfect it, including Freddie's interaction with the crowd. and the number of big hits they could play to get the crowd going. Another trick Queen pulled off here is that they had their own sound engineers control the sound during their stint, what they did was amped up the volume to full so Queen were louder than any other band. To show how professional Queen are if you look and listen carefully when the band made their entrance onto the stage as Freddie was getting the crown going the other band members did a quick test of their instruments, then Freddie quickly tested the piano before going into Bo Rap, Queen are the masters of live concerts and are perfectionists. If Freddie wasn't happy with something during a concert he would often throw a tantrum afterwards in his changing room, like smashing the mirror etc, even if he heard a popping noise in his mic but no one else could it drove him nuts lol - Freddie loved his fans and to him it was very important to give them the very best concert that he could and include the fans in the concert, he understood that most were working class people on low incomes and paid good money to see Queen so treat them with respect, he also understood that without the fans he and Queen would be nothing.

Freddie was unique, he loved his connection to the crowd and so did we. I was at the same stadium a year later (1986) for a Queen gig, one of the best nights of my life.
Queen is LEGENDARY. Their music lives on forever. We still hear their music everywhere after 50 years! They really are their own genre. Nobody could include and command an audience with such love like Freddie Mercury.
The best thing about this performance, for me, is that huge smile Freddie is wearing. He was having a blast making their fans go crazy, all by doing something he loved to do. Even security, who were supposed to be watching the crowd, were watching them. It was most definitely a "great occasion". For 21 minutes in 1985 approximately 20% of the world's population soaked in the force of nature known as Queen..

This performance was amazing! Not only because of how great the band was. But Freddie had a throat infection during this set! The doctor said he shouldn’t sing. But he did! And it was one of the best live performances in history!
@@DoIttMiaaaa The drummer, Rogar Taylor, is an excellent singer and provides backing vocals in many QUeen songs. If you listen closely, particulalry in "We are the Champions", you'll hear Freddy drop down an octave because of his throat, whilst Roger continues in harmony in the higher octave to provide a seamless sounding vocal.
@@peterfhere9461 Absolutely, Roger's voice also gets louder and louder as the set progresses and he is supporting Freddie because he can hear his voice beginning to strain. Such a tight, professional band. Brian also said the acoustics were so bad that they couldn't even hear one another and you can see a lot of visual signals and clues between them. That's just a part of being such a tight unit and putting in the rehearsal time to get the set perfect. I don't think many of the other acts bothered quite so much!

Outstanding concert, I watched it on TV as it was happening as did nearly half of the world's people who had T.Vs. Freddie had a throat infection and his doctor tole him not to do the show. Freddie slammed back a couple of Vodkas and hit the stage. I have seen this show so many times but each time it is still exciting and entertaining. I always get lost in it and really feel like I am actually there. Thank you for reacting to this iconic performance.

Freddy and the band Queen were one-of-a-kind performers. 55 years old now and yeah, I watched it live on TV back then, If I could go back in time to see one concert live this is the one. Since that is not an option when I have a bad day I watch this. Freddy and Queen make it impossible to continue being in a bad mood.
This is without a doubt the best live musical performance of all time. Queen was great and Freddie Mercury was the best showman that ever lived who sang like no other. I was six, but I remember that a bunch of people in my neighborhood were gathered at one house to watch this. It was good, but even in America whole households, people in bars and venues showing it were singing and clapping along during this set.
This was the time Freddie Cemented himself as THE greatest concert artist ever for me. The way he moved the crowd there and on the t.v and even now when people watch it. If you having you trouble believing, the man was sick in more ways than one but moved the crowd and those watching for generations to come.

He was an astronomy research student when Queen started and put his studies 'temporarily' on hold as he thought it might not last. About 30 years later, he returned to academia to complete is PhD. That must be a world record student 'gap' year😀. You should check out their back catalogue, lots of terrific stuff, many big UK chart hits back in the day. Speaking of stage names, Freddy was born Farrokh Bulsara and he's from Zanzibar. I guess Freddy Mercury is a bit more rock 'n' roll.

Freddie is amazing as he always was, but the entire band - harmonies from drummer Roger (high!) and Brian singing while playing guitar.. super instrumentals from Roger, Brian and not to forget John on the bass... they put in a song or two not "big hits" - Hammer to fall.. and some unexpected things.. like Fred playing guitar on "Crazy little thing..." just so fantastic for a limited set.. commonly said that they "stole the show..." appreciate your reaction! Freddie Mercury had a throat infection at the time of Live Aid and was advised by his doctors to not risk performing at the festival. He defied their orders, and Queen's set went down in history as the greatest performances that day.
It looks like during the part of this concert that was at Wembley Stadium, David Bowie came on after Queen was finished with their set. I'm not sure how true it is, but just before coming on, he supposedly said "How the f**k am I supposed to follow that?". Whether or not he actually said that, it goes to show how good this set was.
Best live performance by any band hands down... THIS is what every band strives for. The energy... the electricity... the fan/crowd support and participation, and finally, a perfect performance that will be remembered (37 YEARS LATER !!!). For the record, since this LiveAid was a concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans, they didn't JUST play for the 72,000 fans who were at Wembley Stadium... they estimated that 1.9 billion people were watching on television from 130 countries around the world !!! Seeing your face light as they hit the chorus of We are the champions was priceless. Yet another song you knew, but didn't know it was Queen. You should check out the video to Crazy little thing called love. Even the setting looks like an Elvis film. Fun fact: For many years i actually thought it was Elvis. I was so convinced that it was Elvis who sang this song that, years later when i started jamming with Queen concerts, i thought Queen were doing a cover of his! No, it's a tribute to him.
I'll second that suggestion, it gives a good idea how big Queen still were in the UK 25 years after Freddie died and before the Bohemian Rhapsody Movie come out. How many 'popular music' songs are there that 42 years after their release a whole crowd of people still know all the lyrics for, not to mention being able to sing Brian's guitar solo.
The mad thing about this is that it was a concert to raise money for Ethiopia. The British are certainly the champions of fundraising. The bands at this concert gave some of the greatest performances of their lives to raise money for people less (very much less) fortunate than themselves. Well done, one and all♥️♥️😍😍🤔😘

And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person! NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience. NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?). NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him. SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW: nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. I saw Queen for the first time early 70's Plymouth Guildhall and they did two tracks that hooked, me Ogre Battle and Liar, I was smitten with them. I was into Slade, Sweet, Mud but this was of a different quality, everything was perfect. I went out and bought Queen and Queen2 and then heard "March of the Black Queen." It's Bo Raps little brother but little brothers can be better than big brothers gibve it a listen.

The best thing about this performance, for me, is that huge smile Freddie is wearing. He was having a blast making their fans go crazy, all by doing something he loved to do. Even security, who were supposed to be watching the crowd, were watching them. It was most definitely a "great occasion". For 21 minutes in 1985 approximately 20% of the world's population soaked in the force of nature known as Queen..
I`ve watched so many of these videos, but never have I heard the pure distortion of the music on this one its like really being there!!! very nice and one person in the COMMENTS WAS THERE!!

@@DoIttMiaaaa The drummer, Rogar Taylor, is an excellent singer and provides backing vocals in many QUeen songs. If you listen closely, particulalry in "We are the Champions", you'll hear Freddy drop down an octave because of his throat, whilst Roger continues in harmony in the higher octave to provide a seamless sounding vocal.
@@peterfhere9461 Absolutely, Roger's voice also gets louder and louder as the set progresses and he is supporting Freddie because he can hear his voice beginning to strain. Such a tight, professional band. Brian also said the acoustics were so bad that they couldn't even hear one another and you can see a lot of visual signals and clues between them. That's just a part of being such a tight unit and putting in the rehearsal time to get the set perfect. I don't think many of the other acts bothered quite so much!

Outstanding concert, I watched it on TV as it was happening as did nearly half of the world's people who had T.Vs. Freddie had a throat infection and his doctor tole him not to do the show. Freddie slammed back a couple of Vodkas and hit the stage. I have seen this show so many times but each time it is still exciting and entertaining. I always get lost in it and really feel like I am actually there. Thank you for reacting to this iconic performance.

Freddy and the band Queen were one-of-a-kind performers. 55 years old now and yeah, I watched it live on TV back then, If I could go back in time to see one concert live this is the one. Since that is not an option when I have a bad day I watch this. Freddy and Queen make it impossible to continue being in a bad mood.

I was six, but I remember that a bunch of people in my neighborhood were gathered at one house to watch this. It was good, but even in America whole households, people in bars and venues showing it were singing and clapping along during this set.

This was the time Freddie Cemented himself as THE greatest concert artist ever for me. The way he moved the crowd there and on the t.v and even now when people watch it. He was an astronomy research student when Queen started and put his studies 'temporarily' on hold as he thought it might not last. About 30 years later, he returned to academia to complete is PhD. That must be a world record student 'gap' year😀. You should check out their back catalogue, lots of terrific stuff, many big UK chart hits back in the day. Speaking of stage names, Freddy was born Farrokh Bulsara and he's from Zanzibar. I guess Freddy Mercury is a bit more rock 'n' roll.

When it debuted, every radio station around the world played it simultaneously- and it was also aired on TV. It raised a ton of money for famine relief in Africa. I bought the record as soon as it was available. FYI. USA for Africa was not United States of America, it stood for United Support of Artists.

Freddie is amazing as he always was, but the entire band - harmonies from drummer Roger (high!) and Brian singing while playing guitar.. super instrumentals from Roger, Brian and not to forget John on the bass... they put in a song or two not "big hits" - Hammer to fall.. and some unexpected things.. like Fred playing guitar on "Crazy little thing..." just so fantastic for a limited set.. commonly said that they "stole the show..." appreciate your reaction! (P.S. seems like you know most of the songs.. what surprised you?)

Freddie Mercury had a throat infection at the time of Live Aid and was advised by his doctors to not risk performing at the festival. He defied their orders, and Queen's set went down in history as the greatest performances that day.

It looks like during the part of this concert that was at Wembley Stadium, David Bowie came on after Queen was finished with their set. I'm not sure how true it is, but just before coming on, he supposedly said "How the f**k am I supposed to follow that?". Whether or not he actually said that, it goes to show how good this set was.
Best live performance by any band hands down... THIS is what every band strives for. The energy... the electricity... the fan/crowd support and participation, and finally, a perfect performance that will be remembered (37 YEARS LATER !!!). For the record, since this LiveAid was a concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans, they didn't JUST play for the 72,000 fans who were at Wembley Stadium... they estimated that 1.9 billion people were watching on television from 130 countries around the world !!! Fun fact: For many years i actually thought it was Elvis. I was so convinced that it was Elvis who sang this song that, years later when i started jamming with Queen concerts, i thought Queen were doing a cover of his! No, it's a tribute to him.

I'll second that suggestion, it gives a good idea how big Queen still were in the UK 25 years after Freddie died and before the Bohemian Rhapsody Movie come out.
How many 'popular music' songs are there that 42 years after their release a whole crowd of people still know all the lyrics for, not to mention being able to sing Brian's guitar solo.

The mad thing about this is that it was a concert to raise money for Ethiopia. The British are certainly the champions of fundraising. The bands at this concert gave some of the greatest performances of their lives to raise money for people less (very much less) fortunate than themselves. Well done, one and all♥️♥️😍😍🤔😘

Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 66 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person!
NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience.
NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?).
NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him.
SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW:

This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves! 25:41

I saw Queen for the first time early 70's Plymouth Guildhall and they did two tracks that hooked, me Ogre Battle and Liar, I was smitten with them. I was into Slade, Sweet, Mud but this was of a different quality, everything was perfect. I went out and bought Queen and Queen2 and then heard "March of the Black Queen." It's Bo Raps little brother but little brothers can be better than big brothers gibve it a listen.
