  • After I crash my Phantom 3 (Video • Crash DJI Phantom 3 Dr... ), my battery also got malfunction. It cannot be charged at all. I thought it was the battery cell that got error and must be replaced. But surprisingly, after I disassemble and look at inside of the battery, I saw all the sell is still good.
    The problem found only from a disconnected cable because of the crash.
    Now my battery has back to normal. I put some glue when assembling the battery case to make sure all back to it place.

    A small tip, because you tend to whisper we have to turn up the volume to hear you. Then you deafen us with throwing parts and tools onto your workbench. Try placing your camera or camera tripod on a small folded towel, this would absorb that noise. Alternatively you could buy a Lavalier Microphone and clip it to you shirt.

    DJI used to have the circuit in the aircraft, for the Phantom 1. Of course no one bought the DJI battery, they bought less expensive ones. I think DJI saw a way to make more money by making a proprietary smart battery.

      Don't forget the part where "intellegent" batteries were updated in firmware so that the drones would only accept ones from dji, making aftermarket ones worthless, then dji stopped selling the batteries for p3.

    the protection circuit board is built within the battery because it controls input/output when being charged, & not to overcharge while plugged & offers a discharge protection while in use as well. It would not be safe if circuit board is installed within the drone because this would mean having a charge port on Drone & battery would have to remain in to charge so lose flying time & if battery would ever leak or short out it would surely damage components within the drone also. Also, these smart circuit boards are engineered to notify user/ drone when to return to base when voltage drops

    Great video. Very helpful. Mine would not charge but was not that old. Red blinking light and one green blinking bar. I opened mine up and removed the Control circuit. Then I connected the pack to a Riden power supply to se how much charge it would take and if the cells were balanced or if there was a bad one (or more). Once I verified it was fully charged, I ran a discharge test from full charge to minimum charge with my DL24P load tester. Granted I could only discharge at 10A I still got an idea of the pack condition.

    Don't forget it also does the automatic discharging of the battery down to 60% after 10 days to ensure the battery lasts. Also contains all the cycle info etc about the cell and it's performance. It's not a bad thing. Sure price could come down to a realistic level. Nearly all lithium based battery packs seem to have a pcb included these days.

    • @petrusgoel
      @petrusgoel 4 года назад

      I choose the cheaper method anyway... I can discharge it manually which was easier. The cycle is just a record.. not very important. Owner can record. $40 vs $200 i can get 4 batt....

    The yellow and red wires coming off the main jack is so the phantom copter can communicate with the bettery and know cell voltage and battery temperature and the sensor glued to the side of the battery pack with the 2 black wires is the temperature sensor.. and for that wire to break off the connector it was installed bad when the battery pack was built.. or it's to thin of a wire and it couldn't hold up to the current it carried, because it's in a sealed environment.. nothing is able to pull or yank on it

    Very good job, Arya.
    I am impressed with how you disassembled the battery case, very clean !
    I saw another video on YT, where some Chinese guys completely destroyed the case (and the battery too), lol !
    You are right, why they included the electronic card inside the battery case, it's just ridiculous.
    Perhaps it would be possible to place the card in the quad, or inside the battery compartment and with a new connector, connect the battery to the card.
    It would then be possible to use simple LIPOs, much cheaper, as you say.
    Kind Regards,
    Jean-Luc

      Hi Jean-Luc,
      Thank you for your appreciation for my video. The card inside the battery compartment, I think it just like an indicator or battery tester but using LED. I curious for the main input line. It just normal positive and negative input. And the other tiny pins, is the battery signal sender to the telemetry transmitter. That's why we can know how much the battery left in our smartphone application.
      But all I said above is just a hypothesis. I hope I can try the other 4S LIPO to power the bird as soon as I got my long holiday here.
      Regards.

      And maybe the 2 black cables that are between the LIPOs "in glue" are a temperature captor.

      They do the boards to make these so user friendly and easy to fly for anyone otherwise you'd need a charger for lipo batteries with a balance board and people would just not want to take the time so from a business perspective they made convenience a priority and they're making people pay for it. Also with the board on the battery they can track the telemetry (data) and use it to make their batteries better. I'm sure they're getting the data from the batteries back whether we want to allow them or not as they designed it but if you read the fine print you don't own the software on the drones, batteries, etc so they can get the data. My guess is they have a hush hush way they're doing it and will continue until they're caught and then change their tune but by you accepting the terms of service and using the app, software, etc your essentially giving them the right to the data. Think about Goa they did the fly restriction. You don't agree then you can't fly your drone. The price of the batteries and such is because they know they can charge it and will until someone steps up and makes just as good batteries DJI will keep the prices up. Someone should get a good cell supplier, buy dead DJI packs or offer a exchange for them . I can get a 4 cell lipo RC car battery for less than $90 and that's a good brand.
      Maybe I should buy a 4 cell and try it if I can't recovery my battery and see if the software will work properly with it. That's the main thing is you need to get the readings and safety warning for return to home and if other cells can give the circuit board that data then one can be set to replace their own cells.

    Dude, you make perfect sense. Put the battery intelligence in the drone, NOT the battery. But - the board in the battery is their excuse for charging so much., and making so much more money. Capitalism at its best...

      Do you want to be able to see the charge level outside of the craft or not? Do you want overcharge and short protection... or not? Jim you stick to making arts and crafts leave the drone building to us.

    • @ericjohnson8482
      @ericjohnson8482 7 лет назад +5

      I could care less if I can see the charge level outside of the drone. I use a PL8 and never worry about overcharge or shorts, I know how to charge a battery. If the drone had that stuff inside it and not in the battery we could swap batteries charged under a better charger which will make them last longer, plus I can charge 8 or 10 batteries at once instead of one at a time.

    • @FlyingBassMan
      @FlyingBassMan 7 лет назад +3

      Totally agree with Eric! I'm also an owner of a PL8 which I use for charging my planes and helis. I don't want to have to buy another charger to simultaneously charge my drone batteries. I also want to be able to make up my own battery packs.

      I think Arya's thoughts about the battery PCB is pretty solid. The charging PCB and charge indicator can be put on-board and an interchangeable cell pack can be linked via cabling. It certainly helps DJI to put these in a proprietary battery pack as they can sell more and provide a guarantee about the quality of the batteries customers use, particularly when they're trying to honor their own warranty. The early Phantoms had a tethered battery pack, so it's technically possible to return to that approach and run the risk of 3rd party cell packs being questionable and not being accurate with DJI's tuned sensing. The real issue though is look at the thick, high-amp, cabling and smaller logic and temp cables: That's a lot of cabling and your drone and DJI Go app need accurate info on the battery health. I don't fault them for deciding to build reliable options for their products, but I do take some issue where they locked out all 3rd party. Unless there's deliberate intellectual property theft for those 3rd party "smart" batteries to work with Phantoms--and I'm not convinced there is based on the design--they seem to have overstepped good taste. Apple almost went this approach, maybe even did briefly, when they detected unauthorized repairs to their iPhones, but they eventually reversed that. DJI can simply void the warranty and let the free market decide if they want reliability or potentially substandard parts. They can't legally hold a position of forcing customers to use their products, though they might be able to get away with deliberately cutting off reporting. Maybe.

    • @BobPaul
      @BobPaul 6 лет назад +1

      There's perfectly valid reasons to have an intelligent battery. Short circuit protection, over voltage protection, self balancing, automatic storage mode, storage level/coulomb counting, etc.
      They also have financial reasons: whenever someone makes a DJI compatible battery, they can update the Drone and Battery firmware to alter the communication so the clone batteries become useless bricks. DJI is selling $20-40 batteries with $4 of smarts for $100-$150. That extra circuit board allows them to have a wide profit margin on battery sales. Additionally they can do things like count the charge cycles in the battery itself and easily see if a battery had completed its warranty period or not.

    The black wire that you thought was an antenna is most likely a temp sensor. That would explain why it's glued to the side of the cells. A Thermistor I'm assuming.

      All DJI batteries are similar. You will find the same, with a different shape. 2 main cables (very thick), 2 communications cables (very thin), 2 thin cables going to a thermistor (temp sensor) in the middle of cells, and up to 5 thin wires (depending of number of cells) for charge balance. Thats all the wiring. The concepts behind this wiring is beyond the scope of this tyny, mini explanation. But are not complicated.

    Good video. The boarea could easily be made into the aircraft. The battery balancing bullshit can be made into the charger. I don't yet feel comfortable with aftermarket Battery Technology yet, but I don't want to pay $150 for a $350 drone. I guess I will just continue to use my existing battery and suffer through shorter flights...
    DJI could easily offer a refurbished battery program when you turn your core in, you get credit... wtf DJI?

      Easy to repair stuff. Google is your friend. I've had my DJI p3 pro 3yrs ajd haven't got around to flying it yet and already wasted a new battery. I'll try boost charging it with a conventional charger bypassing the balance charger stuff for now and get it up to equivalent to 50% with a real low and slow charge then try the factory charger since it has the balance board built in. Who knows battery could've been bad from the get go. I'll call DJI and see if I can work a deal with them on replacing the new bad battery.

    You absolutely must be careful not to cut the battery! Even a depleted LiPo cell can potentially catch fire if punctured or shorted. Cutting yourself is no fun, but burning yourself can be even worse. See the rest of this message for info about the connectors, etc.
    The small component with the black leads that is glued to the battery is a temperature sensor. It lets the charge controller know if the battery gets too hot during charging so that it can stop before the battery catches fire or melts things.
    The connector on the battery that the wire broke off from is the charge balance connector that reads the voltage of the individual cells and would definitely prevent the battery from charging.
    The connector with the yellow and red wires is used to communicate the status of the battery back to the aircraft controller. It's how the Phantom knows to initiate either a return to home or immediate landing when there is a low battery. It also is used to send information about the battery back to your remote controller so that you can see the battery status in the DJI GO app.
    I'm sure that one of the reasons that DJI makes the controller part of the battery assembly is to help protect themselves from liability. Consumer drones are very often sold to people who may know little or nothing about proper care for LiPo batteries.
    The board contains the charge controller for the battery ensuring that there are no settings for someone to potentially get wrong and fry or damage the battery. It also serves the function of gradually discharging the battery to a safe storage level over time when the battery has not been used in a while. It's actually a fairly intelligent design when you consider the reasons for it.

    • @AryaDegaTube
      @AryaDegaTube  7 лет назад

      +SynnicWinterhaven - Hi! Thank you for your safety reminder and very helpful information about those cables. I agree with you why phantom's batteries has complex design. Warring Warring!! if you expose the lithium inside 1 of the 6 stacks with blade and a drop of water touches lithium it will spontaneously combust or blow up. This is why meth Drug Makers are burned up. Great video and yes Phantom 4, 4Pro batteries are glued after removing the screws if you must open a battery it does have to be cut. Best left to pros or someone whom doesn't mind a first row seat to an explosion. Having worked in narcodice dept. and seeing the burns and explosions from lithium I felt the need to warn the viewers. Thank you for your video Sir.

      Water don't have to touch a exposed cell that's punctured. The exposed cell making contact with air will cause it to start smoldering and eventually smoking and lead to a flame.. Back in 2008 when lipo batteries were new to the RC scene I had one that puffed/swelled up so I used a ice scraper for the concrete outside and punctured it. I actually made a RUclips video back then as there weren't any when I'd searched but a few years later I pulled it down as I didn't think it was needed anymore.
      I have a P3 Pro battery I let discharge apparently because I went a couple years without charging it from new so money wasted. Luckily I was able to get the other one to charge.
      I only get 1 flashing Green light that flashes with the red when charging when I do the quick press once and hold for 2 seconds after it's plugged in. It does that for 10-15 min then goes to a cycle flash where every so many seconds it flashes a few times then goes dark for 5-10 seconds before the lights flash a few times again. I wonder if there's a way to boost it to where I wake the balance portion and circuitry up and it takes over and then low voltage charge it until it hits xxx amount of volts then move it back to the regular charger designed for it. If I knew what was positive, negative, balancing data is present or not I could hook it up as I have balance chargers for my RC stuff which a lot I haven't charged or even opened the case in 10+ yrs. It's like a long term experiment. Once I get some other things done around the house I'll make a video or a couple of unboxing by opening the army ammunition cans where they've been stored inside my main entry way under a hutch buffet by the front door of my house. It's always roughly 70 degrees year round where they're stored. I'm expecting the worse which is why I already bought a couple new batteries when I bought a new Traxxas 4tec this past summer and I haven't put the upgrades on it let alone ran it yet. Maybe I should in case there's something wrong.
      I've had my DJI Phantom 3 pro 3 yrs aand haven't ran it yet. Need to sit down, read and figure out the firmware update process so I can run it. I bought it before the crap laws, height flight restrictions were implemented. Should've just got the app back then for my tablet , ran it and kept it offline or figured out a way so it wouldn't be casterated by all the laws they put into place.

      Hi Mexico! 😊. Thank you for watching my video. Every cell is equal 3.7 volt. But I’m realy sory, this is an old video and the battery has already sold. I cant remember the current/ampere 😭

    • @dtnel
      @dtnel 5 лет назад

      Normally each cell should charge no higher than 4.2 on Lipo batteries. 3.7 is the low voltage cutoff so it can let you know it's time to charge it. In the world of RC cars at 3.7 per cell the Electronic Speed Control (ESC) settings will stop the car at 3.7 or a little lower but no lower than 3.2. Drones are different on the low voltage cutoff which is when it tells you to return to home. They fully charged at 4.2 volts per cell hence 4 cells @ 4.2 volts fully charged equals 16.8 volts which should be on a 4 cell pack so you know the voltage. 3 cell is 12.6, 2 cell is 7.4 and 1 cell is 4.2 volts. 7.4 is real popular in the RC car world where a lot of people who race use 7.4 , 2 cell lipos. Hope this has helped you.

Phantom 3 batteries aren't being made anymore and the drone was updated to only work with originals so their value increases if you can find one with low charges. Keep and use that battery or sell it. Whatever you do don't destroy it just to make a cheap usb battery bank

    • @AryaDegaTube
      @AryaDegaTube  7 лет назад +1

      +pavel1809 - I'm not sure what its for. But small cable means small current. It can also use for some signal to the board. My battery cannot be charged before. After I replace and get the connection back, it can charged normaly.

    • @mlindholm
      @mlindholm 7 лет назад +2

      That is likely the balance leads, which let it ensure all cells are charged up fully. That is also what lets it see the voltage of each cell, to tell you in the DJI Go app the charge of each cell.

    Its not so easy. One issue that is behind all of this, is the fact that there are power transistors involved, that deliver to the drone, like a water tap valve, the energy required to fly. And this implies fatigue of electronics components. So, when you replace the whole battery, you are replacing also these power transistors and starting over. But even with this replacement, you must realize that you have more power transistors on the mainboard inside the drone. They fatigue as well. So, in essence, you should change the whole mainboard, from time to time. All of these facts are probabilistics, based on MTBF (mean time between fails) factor of electronic components. How safe do you want to be today? Do you want to maintain Boeing or NASA standards? It depends on you. But... even applying those standards, accordingly to the Heissenberg's Uncertain Principle, the future is unpredictable. I have talked!

    • @AryaDegaTube
      @AryaDegaTube  7 лет назад

      +PepePepian5000 - It’s about economic factor. When the circuit board on battery moved to the drone at the first design before production, it will cost lower than today for people changing batteries. But that was my point of view, not manufacture and thier marketing strategic point of view.

    • @PepePepian5000
      @PepePepian5000 7 лет назад +1

      It is not a tricky maneuver from DJI. It is a technical design decision. They are trying to keep their design as safe as possible. Their batteries frees you from a lot of complicated work. They try to simplify your life. Lipo HV batteries are very, very delicate. I do not work for them, by the way. Anybody that look this topic from an electronics point of view, will understand what Im saying. On what I agree with you is about prices. They could sell the same batterie for half a price NOW, but they do not want. Eventually, this will become true. But THE SAME design, not a cheaper one.
