Watching/listening early on Sunday morning while the rest of the family is asleep. Having my 1st cup of coffee. Reminded again of how much this band and their music mean to me. Truly Grateful. 🌎✌🏼❤️⚡️
Saw them three nights in a row for my first of twenty shows, it was night three when they did Morning Dew and I still get chills when I hear the big man doing what he does best. I am glad that I got to see them all those times. Thanks for the memories boys!
This was my golden birthday: 19 on the 19th. Me and my best had tickets for the 18th and we got miracles for this. We were also gifted some other goods. One of the best nights of my life. Still.

Oh, man, something about '89 at Alpine Valley. I was there with such great friends and the boys were ON for this run of shows. Jerry seemed so happy and inspired and it was a beautiful summer with a full moon. The fact that it ended with rain and mud didn't dampen it a bit. I remember laughing our asses off pushing the car out of sucking mud at the end of it all. The year before had been an intensely, depressingly dry drought year so yay for mud! I miss being young and high with those people and in this scene. Goosebumps getting to see this again.
Fast forward to this years dead company show and undercovers were everywhere..No shakedown street ,no vending..I saw undercovers in tie dies( new not even washed or faded) telling people selling braclets to put away or get $1000 fine... The dad was buying it for his 8 year old kid...No grilled cheese,no pins ,no anything man.... Great first night but they made it a bummer in the lot,,, also cops telling everybody road blocks later which I never saw...Sent us all on a 45 min back country road to get 4 miles..The interstate was right there 1 mile away but they didn't want us on it...Great show and people but bad cops...Did I mention NO Camping...
It was a glorious summer for me, too. Buffalo for July 4th, Deer Creek then three days at Alpine. What sweet, sweet fun. My husband and I fell in-love that summer.
this was a full moon weekend in deep summer. at one point, the sun was setting on one side of the valley while the full moon was rising on the other side, creating an effect almost like a two sun planet. very very awesome
It poured rain the 1st night, with peeps sliding down Alpines hill, then the sun came out the next day... Day 3 they brought in water trucks as the 80,000 people inside and outside overwhelmed Alpines capabilities!!!! We had a riot!!!! Took a full week to recover from these shows!!!!!!!
That’s crazy absurd that some people would give thumbs down to any mourning dews. They should be so lucky to catch any mourning dew show. Always my favorite. Wow jerry screaming this dew out fiercely. Whoa, Jerry very animated with his guitar notes and showing his emotion
Was so overcame with the fear, the beautiful fear, almost eerie that came from shows like this. You could have every day of my covid summer for one more Jerry and Brent show. Still have high hopes for 2021 that we can all feel that feeling again. Just one more night where the world is alive and dripping with color.
Hey girl, I realize that this is an old ass post, but just reading it now really hit home..I was able to take my son, who was 15 last summer, to six D&C shows, and were the boys ever on!!..they were NOT slow much at all, and believe it or not, Mayer really grew on me..of course NOBODY can or will ever come close to Garcia imo, but Mayer did Jam Sugaree and Deal amazingly..we have the entire second leg of the Tour this summer, starting in Bethel NY on 7/1, and we're riding it to the end at Citified on 7/16..I cannot articulate how psyched we are for Tour to start..I hope you're going to some shows girl, if you didn't go last year, you'll be very pleasantly surprised..have a great summer and be safe..much love, good health, and happiness to you and yours..always Grateful..💀🎸🐺🥀🐢♥️⚡💙🌁🍄🫠🐊😸🌻🐒🚂🌬️💨💨🌹🫶 NFA!🎶
If post 1986 represents the 3rd act of the Grateful Dead, then the apex of that 3rd act is the three nights at Alpine. I've watched "Downhill From Here" more time than I can count. Being a child of the 80s, and having seen my first show in '87, summer tour '89 will now and forever hold a sacred space in my heart that words will forever fail to convey. Jerry and the boys were absolutley crushing it! Long live the Grateful Dead!
There are no live versions of this masterpiece that aren't equivalent to intense religious/spiritual experiences. *chills* -Man who was talked out of serious depression through TGD's musical library.
Never missed an Alpine show. Distinctly remember sliding down the rain soaked hill to the Bucket opening. 1989 was awesome. Began the spring tour in Pittsburgh --> Ann Arbor--> Cincy--> Louisville--> 3 Rosemont shows--> 2 Mecca/MWK shows --> Went to the 3 Irvine Meadows shows. Back on in Philly --> NJ. Missed RFK but back to Noblesville -> ALPINE. Great late 80's shows. One of the Alpine shows was my 100th.
Jerry at his best. Perfect song selection for a wet and muddy night. Vocals came straight from the heart. Guitar screamed anger of nuclear war. There was no reason to dance to this, just stand there and think. These 3 nights Jerry and Brent pushed each other to new heights. They had a special connection. I feel lucky to have been in the number for those last Alpine shows.
I was there... The 3 nights at Alpine valley ended my tour for 89.was such an amazing summer. Hated missing Hampton but still got some amazing shows that year
One of my favorite parts of a dead show is being able to see and feel how jerry is feeling and then see how it's translated through his instrument. In this example, jerry seems a bit contracted the whole song until 4 min 6 seconds and then he expands how he is feeling outwards and the music goes into overdrive
Nothing like Jerry’s touch to those strings mind blowing entertainment with each pull of those strings he pours out one of my favorite things about Jerry was his ability to improv a song different than the last time and it was so much fun except for on the occasional bad nights but wow 🤩
IWT. We spent hours in the parking lot before the show recording folks on a mini VHS recorder. Saw the show, and we were electrified. Walked back through the woods to our rooms at the Alpine Valley resort. Continued the party, and we all reviewed the tapes, which were fabulous. I broke the tabs off the tape masters so they couldnt be mistakenly recorded over, and we went to bed. Woke up in the morning, all the tapes were completely blank. Never did figure out what happened there. I guess it doesn't matter, anyway.
Phil was very erratic in the early days understandable :) But, on this ohh... so much respect. Jerry OMG I patterned my lead guitar after him. Beautiful.
May be the best Dew ever...Jerry was getting it done right here..Alpine is a badass venue unfortunatly with alot of bad cops/ undercovers everywhere...
I was at this show...and thought I heard a baby cry, but it was me. I love this one but get moved to tears every time I hear th e one from Greek theatre in 1988.
Didn’t finish last comment. Jerry really displaying his emotions during last verse voice wise and sensational guitar work. First time I heard this dew, and it was amazing. RIP Jerry we will always love you 🍄💚☮️🍄💜🍄☮️❤️
All the Jerry versions were present in this song. There was, of course, mello Jerry accompanied with jamming Jerry, but one got to witness intense Jerry (4:00-4:45) which he went right back into mello Jerry for a full circle 'hat trick'. Great tune!!
Did Foxboro, two at Giants Stadium, Deer Creek and the three at Alpine that summer... should’ve gone to Buffalo and JFK.. They were so on top of their game that summer!!!
I felt like my running was cumming to and end. After 15 years Things were changing. I saw Jerry walk off stage in '86. My last show was Soldier Field and that was it for me. That Alpine show made it all good for me .
I remember in SF me and 5 friends, peeing out the 2nd story window in the beech area. The neighbors complained the pee was rolling down the gutter. 1970. We were crazy. Thank god we, well some of us are alive now. God bless Ralph. God bless the Dead.
i'm looking for a good 1987 concert in alpine valley a friend that I was with said they could see us we were sitting just a couple of rows from the front by the isle
I have seen many Dead shows till the very sad passing in 95. I always wanted to see a show where Jerry would sing in his crying voice Morning Dew. I never did get that show until September of 95 when I went to a CD fair. I bought this same show on VHS. Went home and that evening got ready to attend one more show. I got my head right and then hit play. then it happened.....during the second set Morning Dew. My girl at that time looked over at me and said.....well Hun you finally got your Morning Dew. Till this day this song pulls a few drops of tears from my eyes.
😢 you guys are missed thank you for the gifts you left behind still on that long strange trip in 2020 Jerry Brent Keith Pigpen ❤️still going strong. ⚡️🌹💀🌹⚡️🎸💀

Few know the Dead were banned from Alpine Valley after these shows. Fans abandoned their cars on the interstate and tore down fences to get in free. Leslie West who was the president of AV went ballistic. This may have been the greatest Dead shows ever.
Not sure if I was at this show, but I know I went to one of those Alpine Valley shows that year & I remember thinking he looks like a grandma with his big man bun in the back.
Alpine Valley is. In Wisconsin. No wonder the Dead is huge there. Jerry is epic. Just to echo, this morning dew is great. I never understood until recently the meaning of this song: people die every day and it's ok to mourn.
I feel so sorry for those who recently got turned on and wonder what it was like to be in His presence for such a moment as this . Best times of my life and those I lived it with. It is heartwarming to see so many of my kin are doing what I'm doing and seeking out a fond memory of my life and remembering how it felt all over again if just for a moment . Was it really that long ago?
T LC i was just too young man! I have been into the dead in a ‘Take over your life’ kind of way for about 14 years and i would still have been a long way off!! I was 7 when jerry on his greatest trip!! Just born in the wrong era my friend

Good times when you can catch a moment for yourself 😊 Same here now loving it!
Good Lord, the emotion in his voice and guitar blows me into the stratosphere!
The emotion from bending those 🎸strings is what got me into this tripping in soulful bliss
You got that right.
Brother, you hit the nail on the head. Jerry played with so much emotion Whst a tight group, should had let Phil ding.

This was my golden birthday: 19 on the 19th. Me and my best had tickets for the 18th and we got miracles for this. We were also gifted some other goods. One of the best nights of my life. Still.
There were a lot of miracles in those 3 days!!!!!!
Magical...Jerry was out of this world, this song tears me apart... absolutely angelic ✌️
But do you know what it means? What it's all about my guitar playing friend?
It is about the day after a nuclear war......therefore played with tremendous emotion
