How to make WEATHER CHANNEL MUSIC

  • Hey everyone! In today's video, I dive into the beautiful sounds that the late 80s and 90s brought us. The Weather Channel was always on when I was growing up in the early 2000s and I can definitely say it brings a heavy amount of nostalgia. My Dad and I recently collaborated on a synthy vaporwave-esque track that attempts to bring back that classic sound. I'm almost at 100,000 subscribers and will be releasing a small video with another track I just worked on very soon! Hope you enjoy :)
Disclaimer: TWC was founded in 1982, It was not around during the 70s like I stated in the intro so that's my bad!

Can't go without crediting Trammell Starks, the original composer for the weatherscan soundtrack. His legacy is greater than just being an influence on vaporwave. When people talk about 21st century smooth jazz, he's one of the big names.

The Weather Channel had such amazing music. From about 1996-2002, I watched a LOT of Weather Channel and it was all about the "Local On The 8's" because that's when the music would kick in (weather updates incremented every 8 minutes (i.e. 6:08, 6:16, 6:24, etc) in case no one knows what I am talking about). Their Christmas music was awesome too. I still get their version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer stuck in my head some 30 years later. 😂 That track is super smooth and it's cool you and your dad collab. I collab with my son from time to time as well. 😊

Im so glad other people are interested in the weather channel. I used to see my family watching it after school, and i began to watch it before I fell asleep from the era of 2003-2014. There's an entire community around the weather channel still going to this day, there's even a discord server too. Some people even own intellistars, which were the computers that took weather data in and created the presentations for Local on the 8s. Everyone once in a while you'll see someone streaming a refurbished weatherstar xl, intellistar, and most commonly intellistar 2s. The theme over the years generally updated as these were changed. The earliest I remember is the weatherstar xl between 2003 and 2005, but some places had it much longer. The intellistar was from 2005-2012, and is the theme I remember the most. The intellistar 2 also had a great theme called azul for a while, from 2013-2015ish. After they updated the theme to Watt is when they took all the good music out, and made local on the 8s every hour instead of every 10 minutes.

Bro, first of all, thank you. I genuinely felt like no one else was into smooth jazz, or the music played from the Weather Channel. I listen to it on a daily basis, while everyone around me listens to what is out now in the mainstream. You have not only inspired me, but also changed my perspective on my own life; as in, I normally make hip hop beats (for example, think of Griselda, modern day boom bap), but the fact that after reading the comments and seeing how many people are actually into this genre, makes me want to experiment and make my own smooth jazz kind of music. Once again, thank you man.

the "liminal spaces" thing is so weird and cool. that it is a shared thing. When i was a kid I used to imagine being in my local mall or the Renaissance Center afterhours, with smooth jazz playing over the PA system, no one else there and I would just walk around with most of the lights out and moonlight coming in through the sky lights. I never talked about it with anyone else and then these days that concept is common to see. It's just a common fantasy??? whyyyyy? I love it though, makes it even more surreal and magical that so many people felt that way.
p.s. I also loved the weather channel music. the smooth jazz station in Detroit was V98.7

Oh I’d also like to note, it’s sad to see genres dying off that has a special place in my heart. Classic rock, synth wave and that old style lo-go and I mean OLD style like that stuff from the 90s
    Just fading away, very slowly
Growing up I thought I’d be picking up a new album from each artist in each genre every single year forever
But then I grew up, I became an adult and I learned very sadly that life isn’t the only thing that fades away. Living things aren’t the only things that die.
Unfortunately this is part of the reason I’ve also discovered that peoples will and passion also die.
It’s depressing. It’s sad. And it really pushes the envelope on the idea that humanity is entering a corporate age. I’d say the time I was born (the 90s) was the true age of freedom and creativity, now we’re headed into the age of automation and monotony.

Oh hell yeah man. I'm with you 100%. As someone who loved Weather Channel as a kid in the early 2000s, the music was amazing. Forgot about it for a while, but remembered it when I started listening to vaporwave in 2020 I know, I was mad late to the party) and I heard the samples of familiar songs. And I got to looking up the original songs on twcclassics, discovering just how damn good the music was even before my time in the 80s and early 90s. Now, I've been making compilations of the Weather Channel music by year and have been so inspired to make my own Weather Channel type music. It has caused me to be obsessed with The Rippingtons (one of the more prominent artists that were featured on TWC throughout the years), and I mean obsessed with them. I've also come to realize I'm far from the only one who is nostalgic for classic Weather Channel. They always teased us and said it was boring, but now we all miss it

Watched this video when it was released, found it super cool, noticed you were the guy who made that popular song, got re-recommanded the video where you talk about it, and now i'm just listening to your whole discography on YT. Amazing groove you got there.

In 2000 or 2001 I went to the home of the Weather Channel’s music composer to help him with his home stereo. I worked in tech support for a consumer electronics brand.

oh you're not alone buddy. I grew up with the Weather Channel back in the 90s and early 2000s also and I use to watch that just as much as I watched Cartoons. At night or during snow days I would just watch the weather channel all day long. It's as much a part of my Childhood as Nickelodeon and Cartoon was from that era too

You've got a bunch of very ancient sounds there. JP packs and the D20 are so awsome.

This is great man, I like how you called out those influences in the middle and I'm really into Lush Crayon, FM Skyline and Saint Pepsi but those others are new to me. Thank you so much for sharing your music and blasting it at the end for us. Vaporwave will never die with you carrying the torch!

Duuuuuude! I love this music! So let me tell you my history with TWC music. Not only is it just good music, very relaxing and easy to listen to but I was like 14-15ish and a really shy guy. The internet was in its infancy and things like Yahoo, AIM and other sites had these chat rooms. I used to check out all the different rooms and especially the guitar related rooms where dudes would just be on there shredding and making my tiny little mind explode! Anyhow, I digress, So I was a really shy guy and had a really hard time talking to girls because I had this overbearing fear of rejection. So I took to the chat rooms to meet girls my age and Ill be damned if it didn't work. I was talking to girls like I had nothing to lose..lol. Anyhow, one of the girls I ended up dating on the internet of course...ended up living in Washington State, half a country away from me being just a dumb ol Kentucky boy. Anyhow, I used to watch the weather channel all the time just to keep up with the weather going on around her just to make sure that she was okay....you know...like any caring internet boyfriend would do. In doing so, a lot of this great music got ingrained in my head. I remember hearing "And now your local on the 8's, and Heres your weather on the 10's." I used to fall asleep to this music all the time. Thanks so much for posting this dude. It really brought me back to my childhood.

I would absolutely listen to an hour+ of music like this. I've never experienced the "weather channel music" since I'm from Greece and we didn't really have that, but this type of music just hits different. You did an amazing job!
