@Asier Etxeberria Irastorza this isn't exactly true. Every wish exacts a price, but the reason previous societies fell to the stone was that too many people wished for selfish things and wouldn't take them back or renounce them, thus destroying themselves and their surroundings. Honestly, all it took is just a few people at the end of this movie to say "You know what? Screw what this person is saying, I still want to nuke my enemies so no, I won't renounce my wish" and it still all falls apart and everyone dies. The entire script was a massive mess.
@@andrewshandle You're all missing the point made by focusing on the wrong kind of wishes like "I still want to destroy my enemies". That's not the actual problem with that scene. While wanting revenge, or money, or fame or to destroy your enemies can easily be categorized as selfish wishes, there are many wishes that in a real life scenario would happen that you can't so easily categorize that way. Imagine that some of the people that have children with diseases that give them incredible pain everyday, or people that are abused and sold to slavery(which still happens today btw), people whose family is too poor to afford enough food and are dying of hunger, or even people that are simply compassionate. If they all got their wishes to simply be able to give a decent life to themselves or others who need it how can the movie convince us that all it takes is some random lady on tv to basically say "hey stop being selfish" and they would all give up those wishes? It doesn't make any sense and you honestly couldn't blame them for not doing so.
@@AlquimistEd No, I don't think we're missing the point because I think you are arguing a different point than anyone else is. The entire script around the wishes is just bad. It's poorly thought out and not logically consistent, because there are either people who made non-selfish wishes or there are people who made selfish wishes and wouldn't take them back. A script doctor would have changed the script to be that the second Max Lord renounced his own wish it would have automatically cancelled everyone elses (assuming they wouldn't just change the entire third act entirely). As we've learned in 2020, counting on the good will of everyone to do anything is not even remotely realistic, so the entire "resolution" of the movie makes no sense. Bad script is bad, not much reason trying to justify the unrealistic way people reacted in it.
The most unbelievable part of this entire movie was how basic 80s computers all over the world were able to display a fully colored, high-resolution live stream of Pedro Pascal

Can we talk about the fact that Diana had the power to turn things invisible, only ever uses it once as a lazy explanation for the Invisible Jet, and then never uses said powers again?
@@Dilmahkana what about when she regained her powers? I’m just saying it’s one of the most basic rules of storytelling: if a character hangs up a gun in Act 1, they have to take it down and shoot it in Act 2.
A simple thing that bothers me is she asked to be an “apex predator” and was turned into a cheetah. Cheetahs aren’t apex predators, natives honestly see them as pests. I mean, they’re part of the same ecosystem as lions, leopards, and hippos for heavens sake.
Yeah. Not the same but...of all the obvious things not to like about the movie. The fact a fighter jet can’t fly from DC to Egypt without refueling. Probably several times was the deal breaker for me.
Yeah that bothers me too, because even Orcas are apex predators and you could’ve easily turned her into Orca instead of Cheetah, it would be nice to see an obscure character like her in a film.
I legit thought they were initially going down a dark route of Dianna thinking Steve was back but not realizing he was actually another man. That would have been 100 times more interesting and make Dianna's actions and interactions with him more acceptable as she was being deceived as a negative outcome from her wish.
Pedro Pascal's perfomance as Maxwell Lord was the highlight of the movie without a doubt. You could tell that he was having fun being over the top with his role. Everything else ranged from just okay to weak in my opinion.
I love how WW wasn't even the one who decided that Steve had to go. STEVE had to convince HER that she had to let him to. And NEITHER of them believed that because of the man they were killing; but because WW needed to go punch some people harder.
THIS!!!! I can't believe this wasn't mentioned. It's not even her decision. I guess it wasn't the point of this video, but overall the "feminist" notes fell SO flat this movie I was just disappointed by the end of it. I hadn't watched any trailers, so after Steve died in the first movie, and Diana had been living in our world for decades at this point, I was excited to see how SHE would do things this movie without Steve guiding her constantly. And then they just....instantly bring him back. And then he has to teach her how to fly. And find out where Lord was going. And fly the getaway plane. And convince her to let go instead of it being her choice. But hey, we got a campy scene where she winks at a little girl after rescuing her from a hostage situation DO YOU GET IT ICONIC FEMALE ROLE MODEL DO YOU SEE?
@@thesabotagedandovershadowe8423 haha omg how is this possible. the marketing is all about feminism but the movie is about how she can't be whole without a man. terrible
Maybe I just loved the first WW movie so badly I’m overlooking things but I actually found the sacrifice pretty deep. Yes Steve makes the decision because he’s been dead for decades now, he knows he doesn’t belong in the world but Diana has held onto him unable to get past it. When he first suggests she revokes her wish she denies it immediately but it’s only once Diana herself gets her ass handed to her it’s a quick decision, it shows that the moral from the gauntlet scene is still in her head; that getting what you want doesn’t matter if it isn’t actually real, and it serves the purpose of showing her start to finally let him go. Yes Steve is the one that mentions it, encourages it even, but she has to give her free will and say the words to kill him. It’s his encouragement of letting him go that is the same reason she fell inlove with him in the first movie, he knows the world needs her and he’s already a dead man, to keep him means she can’t defeat Cheeta or Maxwell and actual living people die. It shows Steve will always be the one strong enough to sacrifice himself but it’s to preserve Wonder Woman’s place in the world so she can contribute to saving more lives. At the end, Steve got his wish and didn’t have to revoke it. He wished they had more time, and their 84 adventure was a gift. She doesn’t even stand to watch him fade because deep down as soon as she says she revokes the wish and loves him, she takes off running to symbolize that she’s spent almost 40 years now lingering in that moment, the sprinting was finally getting past that stage of grief and back to focusing on the world that needs her.
I was just confused about how Diana was stuck on a dude she met 66 years ago for a couple days. Steve is her main characteristic and that’s what’s bad about it to me.

This is especially weird seeing that the movie before this was set during World War 1 and they DID use more aspects of that real period in time in order to guide its fictional characters. I don’t think anyone was expecting a historically accurate and hyper realistic superhero movie, but when they titled it “Wonder Woman: 1984”... you kinda expect more than what it gave, y’know?
If living through this pandemic has shown me anything, it's that it's extremely unrealistic to expect 100% compliance even for something with relatively little impact (i.e. wearing a mask), so I ABSOLUTELY do not buy that everyone would revoke their wishes just cuz some lady on the TV said so

Like so much of the bad writing in this film, the whole idea of having Steve possess someone else's body was completely unnecessary. The stone apparently grants wishes, but I doubt that Diana wished Steve's soul to take over the body of some random guy who was alive at the time and I doubt that either Diana or Steve would be comfortable with this if it did happen, yet they're both fine about it in the film, which is disturbing. They even go back to the guy's apartment and have sex in his bed... Steve should've just appeared when Diana made her wish and then disappeared when she renounced it...because, magic!

Meh, they've gone through the whole possession stuff a lot and I think they didn't do enough with it. Sure, they did more than here, but it still felt like they dropped the ball for some conflict. I don't want to turn this into a big rant about SPN (could do that all day) but stuff like s9 (spoiler) when Dean tricks Sam into letting Gadreel possess him. Sam, who's been possessed by both the demon Meg and _Lucifer himself._ I don't feel like there was enough consequences for Dean in letting Sam, who probably has some buried issues with being possessed, be possessed by another angel. Idk, this was just one example. There's also the whole stabbing demons with Ruby's knife or angel blade and killinh the host all the time, which was brought up for a split second with Sam's powers allowing him to exorcise demons safely, which Dean doesn't even consider for a second if memory serves. Idk, just a couple examples where I think they could have pushed it further. They definitely did better than this movie, but that's not saying much, esp. considering when SPN had 15 seasons compared to this one single movie, yet still relatively (imo) dropped the ball in that department as well.
A lot of the issues I had with the film are well-encapsulated by your review, especially the part about ignoring the guy who Steve 'inhabits' throughout the film. And worse yet, Diana sees the guy at the end of the film and isn't chagrinned or embarassed at all!

The plot could have been a story of how Diana came to term with acceptance. Accepting her loss of Steve while finally understanding that she cannot keep holding on to the pain of the past. It should have never had "villains," because the villain would be HER WISH. Her being egotistical and didn't understand at first that it's not just Steve that she saw but also someone else. She would gradually investigate who this man is because there's many clues that suggest that something is off with "Steve." It would've been still very heartbreaking too, but it would be a story of Diana. Not having any extra plot of another man seeking revelation from his child or another woman seeking validation from others. It would've been JUST her, Diana. The Wonder Woman. How much it would hurt to lose Steve for the second time, but AT LEAST they meet again. That also could help with the revelation of this actual guy whose body Steve inhabited for a few weeks perhaps. Correction. That's not how the dialogue went. Diana said "My father (Zeus) hid Themyscira from the world and *I've been trying to learn how he [made things invisible]*. And in 50 years I've only done it once." She doesn't explicitly say she was taught by Zeus. I think they should have just focused on Kristen Wiig's Cheetah as the main villain. They should have expanded more on their friendship before she turns evil. The dream stone plot could still work with just her. Maybe the stone could grant as many wishes as you can ask but as she keeps wishing for more, she loses more and more too leading to her to continually lose her humanity and becoming a cat like being. She can use to the stone to grant other people's wish too resulting to chaos just like in the film. She can even be the one in the climax of the film instead of Max Lord that has to renounce her wishes before she becomes a full blown animal. Max Lord is really not interesting and unnecessary when they could have done so much with Cheetah. Two villains is just too crowded for this film and I can't believe they went for Max Lord as the main villain.
While I will agree the theme could have been better presented. I do think there was an implied aspect of Cheetah that you didn't catch (/it was not explained well enough). It was not that Barbara was like suddenly like "I want respect and power" --> "I want power at the point to kill people". While fighting and seeing Barbara's viciousness, Diana explains that the wish takes your precious aspect from you as a price and she asks Barbara what it's taking from her and is it worth it. I think based on how we saw Barbara being sweet, like giving her food to a homeless friend, wanting to be nice and friendly with her new co-workers, I think they were going for her price being her love and compassion, which is why she was growing meaner and meaner after she got her Diana powers.
There have been news stories in which home intruders murder a family and then happily raid the fridge, joking with each other without conscience as they eat. That's what Steve and Diana were doing as they joked about the guy who's existence was obliterated, callously critiquing various items in his apartment. It didn't make any sense. The means by which Steve returned should have horrified them both and been cause enough for Diana to take back her wish, and for the previously self-sacrificing Steve to demand she take it back. These frivolous, self-centered imposters were nothing like the Diana and Steve we knew from the first movie.
I just finished watching WW84; I borrowed it from my local library. I 100% agree with everything you’re saying! The writing is weak, there were points where I felt bored, the movie felt like it was too long, and it didn’t have the feel of the original at ALL. The plot felt really hard to believe even for a comic book movie! I felt that the ability to set the cost for the wish should’ve been explained sooner, because it was confusing in earlier scenes such as when the investor was all of a sudden being arrested by the FBI. Also, why was Wonder Woman totally cool with her boyfriend taking over another guy’s body??? “That guy’s gone, oh well, Peace Out!” It wasn’t a HORRIBLE movie, but it wasn’t very good. 2/4 stars at best.
the Idea of a villain who grants wishes and takes over the world has been done MUCH better. In ninjago, a kids show of all things. Nadakhan the djinn (genie) Is a prince whoo was banished from his homeland and was treated bady. He grants wishes but cons the wishes so that he gets what he wants. You slowly learn his ambition with power in a sensible way, not just rush it at you expecting you to understand. You see how big of a threat he is and see him as a three dimensional villain. If you check ninjago season 6 on netflix, you'll see what I mean. Its impressive how they pulled it off and how well written it is. I recomend it so its impressive how a really good idea for a villain was ruined and at the same time, made better in A KIDS SHOW. wow wb has got to step up their game if they want to be remembered

It's clear the "possession" thing was solely to get the emotional scene where Diana sees a stranger transform into Steve. I guess they couldn't find a compelling way to just re-introduce Steve from "thin air". The implications weren't thought about too much.
@@aguyfromnothere I know she isn't a normal human and all but still, 60 years to still be thinking about the same guy to the point of not being able to date someone else if you wanted to is really weird. But yeah her moping about it especially is the real issue here, how is this a strong female character exactly? Her entire life is centered around a guy she loved but has been dead for 60 years now, really??
@@Hi_Just_Fred Have you heard of romanticism? It’s an art movement made in reaction to industrialisation and centers on nature and romance. Especially tragic, dramatic romance, where the main character is a martyr because of love in one way or another. In addition, it ignores rationality when it comes to romance and promotes loving while ignoring the consequences. As a woman that got thrown into the industrial world and lost her lover it makes sense she is a romantic. She is a martyr and isolates herself because she lost Steve but also all the people she cared about and ignores the consequences for love, just for a moment before realizing her mistake and letting go. Diana is shown to be a strong character in the way a princess is, kind in all circumstances (even as she lost everything to time) , resilient and badass as a plus. Romanticism is an escape and has flaws, so does the movie. But there are qualities here, simple clear ones.
It's that old concept of soul mates, i think. She loved him so much she could never get over him. Cheesy, but cute. I'm a sucker for cheesy romance so i liked it, but modern audiences don't really go with this stuff anymore
@@babyblue3717 this is why movies with no love story are better Include a love story when is unnecessary is just lazy writing But in WW84, this concept could've been better explored. I remember when people speculated that Steve was gonna be revealed to be Martian Manhunter
The big issue I have, they made Diana a Disney Princess (kinda ironic as this is the DCEU) in the first movie. Handsome soldier 'rescues' beautiful princess from her tower/secret island, and they sail off into a life of adventure. The scene where Diana walks across No Mans Land, cemented her character as a super hero, and saved her from 'and they lived happily ever after'. But in WW84, she's reverted back to a Disney Princess, having learnt nothing from Steve's sacrifice and more importantly, life in general over the next 66 years. Compare to Diana with Peggy Carter - Peggy was shown as a strong woman, who still "pined" (no pun intended) for Steve Rogers, which in the context of a story arc is understandable and even relatable. But she also was shown to have learnt from his sacrifice, continued to help others and eventually moved on with her life. Diana, a Princess and Demi-god, is shown as weak because of her love for Steve T, whereas Peggy, a soldier, and mortal human, literally soldiers on, in part because of her love of Steve R. Basically, Diana's strength of character is made weaker because of her love for Steve T. It's almost the opposite for Peggy, except that Peggy was always a very strong person, and would have been so whether she had met Steve R or not.
Two huge problems I see are poor writing, and horrific editing. And now it seems the problems with the film will be compounded by blaming fans for not liking it.
well the first delay for the film was due to test screenings not going well which issued some reshoots so maybe the editing had to manage with footage that didn't match the previous and or the scenes that came after it. I dunno
@@sharkjira9142 yeah who knows maybe the OG One was alright. Remember BvS got a standing ovation and was murdered by critics? Not me tho. Shows how ineffective test screenings are at displaying how good a film is
It wasn't a great movie but it was just fine. Quite muddled and low emotional stakes. Had some fun Superman-esque moments and cool scenes. But the negative RUclips people have been working their magic.
With Cheetah her first wish to be like WW cost her, her humanity. Her second wish to be a new apex predator was made as someone who had no heart or humanity and simply wanted to be at the top. She was essentially a different person when making the second wish. IMO they should of made her a kind of chimera with a Cheetah like head and spots but overall an amalgam of other animals.
A wishing stone couldn't bring back Steve's body? But only his soul? Personally I think it would have made senses of Diana would have wished to go back to Themiscyra since she hasn't seen her mother in years...

“I wish my son would stop dying of cancer.”
Tv woman: “Stop being selfish”
“Oh ok. Nvm.”
@Asier Etxeberria Irastorza Then it’s even worse than a plot hole. It’s a literal non conflict.

The "sacrifice" isn't even earned

Lots of things didn't make sense in this. But the logic behind her turning into Cheetah was that Pedro's character used it as his wish 'price'

Its funny that the tv show Supernatural had a mature discussion about the morality of possession of someones body 10 years ago.

Diana could gradually build a new friendship, and possibly, a new romantic interest if they want. Anyway, I was fond of the movie. I hope that the similar bright tone will be in another movies with better plot.

In the film when she and Steve are flying to Egypt and she’s trying to make the plane invisible, she tells him that her dad taught her and her siblings how to do it, one she didn’t know she had any siblings and, she didn’t know who her father was, and in the first film she was raised by the Women on the Island! So good job to the genius who wrote the second film script!
The first movie tells us that her father is Zeus.
@@Krakatov it also says she was raised being told that she had no father, and was not raised in contact with the other gods.
Correction. That's not how the dialogue went. Diana said "My father (Zeus) hid Themyscira from the world and *I've been trying to learn how he [made things invisible]*. And in 50 years I've only done it once." She doesn't explicitly say she was taught by Zeus. Also, in Wonder Woman, Ares tells Diana that she's the "godkiller" that Zeus gave to the Amazonians, revealing that she is his daughter. I don't know how you missed this because that was a major plot point in the first film.
Steve's reappearance took me and my friend completely off the track (not that we were that absorbed into the movie in the first place...). We were like, who is this guy? What's his sexuality? Does he have a girlfriend or boyfriend? Married? Family? What about his job? Did Steve go into work for him? Does he have STDs? WHAT?!!! I mean, if it's a wishing stone, then it could be within the stone's power to just give him his own body. Or maybe the screen writers just want to show that Diane would recognize Steve in whatever form...

I was completely convinced until Steve came back that Barbara was Diana’s new love interest. Their dinner was 100% a date
Would've been a better movie for sure!
Now that's what I call a good love interest.
WW, a warrior from a land of women, being bisexual (as is already cannon with her comic lore), and Barbara pining for her affection but losing it to Steve upon his return and growing increasingly jealous of the both of them enough to become villainous; then WW has to give up on both Steve AND Barbara at the end... Same I was like I’d be fine with them two dating n shit. But unfortunately this movie failed at that too
That would have been better
Imagine if the guy’s body Steve took over had a peanut allergy. There’s a scene right there 😂
I think they should have just focused on Kristen Wiig's Cheetah as the main villain.
WW84 end speech sounded like: "Know your place peasants, and curb your ambitions or the world will go to shit."
That is what an immortal goddess would say, I guess.
"the truth is beautiful... now give little timmy cancer again, peasant!"
While I will agree the theme could have been better presented. Pointing out the dangers of mindless consumption to satisfy an endless appetite for more is valid, sometimes you don't need more to be happy.
For all this movie’s faults (and there’s a lot of them), I actually did like Pedro Pascal being a total goofball.

DC is really getting me mad with the bad scripts they write when they have something good. Its like they want to mess up
Honestly Maxwell Lord was the best of the movie but other than that the rest of the movie was meh
Title picture: What went wrong ?
Me: EVERYTHING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I literally fell asleep watching this movie and that never happens to me
It happens to me during bvs
Two huge problems I see are poor writing, and horrific editing.
And now it seems the problems with the film will be compounded by blaming fans for not liking it.
well the first delay for the film was due to test screenings not going well which issued some reshoots so maybe the editing had to manage with footage that didn't match the previous and or the scenes that came after it. I dunno
@@MovieBits6 Well, it didn't make it better in the end.
@@Dilmahkana Let me guess, you haven’t look at some of the plot holes that make absolutely no sense.
