  • After a week of controversy regarding the performance bye involving Elena Rybakina, Maria Sakkari and Caroline Garcia, I think it's a great opportunity to answer some of these questions. What is a performance bye? When was the performance bye created? Why was the performance bye created?

Imagine kontaveit with performance bye. 🥺That woman played as many matches as she can at the end of that fantastic season and was finalist in Mexico. I miss you Anett 😭

Thank you for finally explaining the full picture. Instead of just creating a controversy! Performance byes have been around a while and it should not have been a surprise to a player like Rybakina. Still, if nobody explained it to her, I could see how it would be annoying to her. But I’m sure it did not play a major factor in her withdrawal as she’s been feeling the effects of er serve now for a while.

Performance byes may have been around on/off. But did they ever took a bye from a ranked player to give it away for performance byes before?

The performance bye can be explained but how to handle it fairly is something that is lacking with WTA at the most moment. Rybakina did nto play in Mexico and Pegula and Swiatek also did not, so a fairer approach in this scenario will be to remove ranked bye for both Pegula and Swiatek.

Maybe she should of been more aware of the rule ? after all it looks like the other players knew of it , before she complained about it ?

Partly fault of her coach as well since they serve as advisers So they should have been handling these things as well.

In my opinion, you should have started with the definition of a bye:
"A bye refers to the automatic advancement of a seeded singles player or doubles team from one round to the next without having to compete against an opponent"
Page 62 does not explain the basic meaning of a bye, which you need in order to understand a performance bye.

Thank you Cam! I learned about byes more than I did before. It makes sense and I wish people especially those that try to cry “unfair” to learn more about what they are complaining about. There’s no controversy at all so please stop saying that, there’s no controversy.

No one should get performance bye.
    It's a ridiculous rule...
They are pro players why need performance bye if you can't compete with timming then pull out from the tournament as simple as that. Why need performance bye to advance in next round. Unfair to other opponents

The logic behind the performance bye is sound. It is the limited application in 2023 that is questionable. Most established player missed Guadalajara due to the limited time between Tokyo and Guadalajara and wanted to concentrate on Asia. The performance bye gave an advantage to those players who were hopeful that the 900 points from Guadalajara would give them a boost to WTA final qualification.
Nothing in the video explain the logic that the WTA used to select the tournaments concerned. If it is to help players who did well in prior tournaments, then why not apply to Miami Open which takes place the week after Indian Wells.
