  • I hope this helps any one working on their washing machine. Don't junk your old machine and spend your hard earned dollars on a new one. I hope you can diagnose what's going on with your machine if it's not working right. Good luck. My machine has done around 100 loads since I replaced that plastic gear and I love it still.

So how does the drain pump turn independently? Spin cycle rotation on lower speed, so clutch wont engage?

The motor has drive shafts on both the front and back. The front shaft mates to the transmission drive cog. The pump mounts to the back of the motor. The pump *always* runs with the motor, in both direction. There's a hose connecting the tub outlet port to the pump input port, and a hose connecting from the pump outlet port to the drain. Water "falls" out of the tub outlet port into the pump via gravity. The pump impeller pushes water back up up into the tub in agitate direction so drain doesn't occur. The impeller of course reverses direction when the motor reverses for neutral drain and/or spin and pushes water out the drain hose instead of back up into the tub. Neutral drain is a mechanical function inside the transmission. It presets during agitation to temporarily lock the big plastic spin gear from turning via springs and weighted cams (located under the plastic gear) when the motor pauses and reverses for drain. The lock releases when the motor stops momentarily a second time and restarts again in reverse for spin. The next agitation period resets the lock mechanism for the next drain.

What oil do these transmissions use? How do the transmissions compare to the older belt driven ones and how sturdy are the gears?

I used the Walmart brand gear oil is all. 85w90? Machine is still running. I don't know how it compares to belt driven machines.

Where can i buy a plastic gear

1:52 Part of a rebuild kit. If you've gotten this far suggest you install the whole kit rather than just the one gear.
