The director of the movie, which is actually the dad in this movie, stated he wanted to make a holocaust movie where the audience can laugh and cry. He also said he was inspired by his father, a Jewish holocaust survivor who lived in the camps for 3 years. His father had nightmares till his mother suggested he explain the Holocaust to the then young Roberto Benigni. His father explained in a light hearted way, which explains the "game" in the movie. :) On the side note, Dora is really his wife in real life, too! It explains the chemistry between the two. ;)

This film was one of the best foreign films I have seen. This has nothing to do with the war or the events of history. This has to do with a father forced to be sent to a concentration camp with his son. The father uses comedy as he did before to comfort and protect his son. He thinks off of his feet to get his son out of danger. Comedy is his weapon and he portrayed it very well. This had nothing to do with the war or anything else. This had to do with a father not letting this imprisonment make his son think life is over because to him no matter what circumstances he is in, life is beautiful. He sacrifices his life to protect his son and did what ever he could to make sure his son survived. Great picture!
@@TheGS013 getting killed is not the all sacrifice. He lived there in pain but never let those pain come to his face just for his son, he shielded his son from the horror. I think that's the sacrifice a dad does to a son. So don't think that eating those bullets is all sacrifice he did.
Can i be honest? I'm not sure why I'm crying at this ending. I don't know if it's because I'm happy that the little boy was able to survive and be with his mamma and that life is beautiful or because of the father's death and sacrifice and what he did to spare his son. That's real bravery.

MrPjw5 we do understand what it is about, in fact by joking about it we are showing that we understand it. The movie is about being positive in the darkest of situations. By making a joke about this dark but yet positive moment we are effectively showing we understand the movie. Your one of those people who when they hear the word, holocaust, gets all down and depressed. Are we supposed to be in tears that they are being liberated? yea its sad the father died. But the movie does not want us to be sad, you hear the music? Yea its definetly telling me to cry.
+MrPjw5 Look I don't want to have kids and I totally understood the movie and the father's motive. This was a really great movie. I mean how can you blame that father? Not even grown folks want to walk in the dark of night, walking through thick fog and low and behold you see a gigantor pile of dead bodies and ashes that are enough to make your jaw drop to the floor.
Everybody talks about a mother's love for her child and everybody forgets about a father's sacrifices. Rest in Peace Dad you'll always be my hero a son never forgets
Anytime I see real footage or even movies of the Allies liberating the camps, I feel a huge sense of pride of what the Allies accomplished. It may have been the greatest accomplishment ever.
And some allied soldiers are very angry and frustrated that they, alongside vengeful camp prisoners, round up wounded German soldiers (and some SS bastards) and shoot them. -Dachau, 29 April 1945. In some other camps, other prisoners are malnourished that they died after getting re-feed. -Liberation of Auschwitz. Not all camp liberations have happy endings. It's really a horror story.
I burst out tears when the boy notices the tank and shout "it was true." The fact that he is never going to see his father again but feeling genuinely happy because he didn't know the truth. It's the thing that still haunts me to nowadays
This is my favorite scene in movie history. When the tank appears after a long period of silence and Giosue (Joshua) smiles, the story is wrapped up in a bow. He made it through the Holocaust without being traumatized due to Guido's wit and sacrifice, and he won the tank. The freeze frame when he is happy with his mother, the voice-over, the ride to his mother... it feels like a victorious reunion, yet feels bittersweet from Guido's death. It is such an intelligent scene from an intelligent move, and it deserves all the praise for how great it is.
Personally, my favorite part of the movie is odd, but it makes sense: Guido is not in the tank. They do not let the ending be completely good, as this was the Holocaust. Guido sacrificed himself for his family and succeeded in doing so, and this scene presses that into your head.
That's not the point of the movie. The point is that a true father will do anything to protect his child from the evil that threatens this world. Clearly from the last couple of subtitles, Joshua understood that when he grew up. "This is my story. This is the sacrifice my father made. This is his gift to me."
MrPjw5 the movie is about staying positive in the darkest of situations, by making a joke about the liberation we are showing that we understand the movie.

this ending always takes me down. It is the definition of a man's role. The guy sacrifices himself to save the boy's imagination and try to free the woman from suffering.
@@mrteaparty6090 The father's behaviour is where the comedy was used, even more prominently when the capturing happened and the exaggerated "escape" attempt before this scene. He made his son believe that they were in the game and acted silly, even more so when he spotted his son hiding. Winked at him and did a funny walk. It's been a long time since I watched this movie, so there may be parts I don't completely remember; however, that's pretty much the gist of it all
To elaborate further, at no point does the father resort to violence or threats to do either. Instead he uses his wit and sense of humor to save his child’s innocence and give hope to his wife.
After seeing this movie my respect for parents around the world has increased a lot . The beautiful relationship between parents and children is simply divine . When I see parents being thrown into old age homes it really makes my heart ache for those children don't realise the sacrifices the parents have made for them . I hope I turn out to be a good son and make my parents proud one day and keep them happy always .
I saw this movie in 9th grade. It was an art school and it was Film and Entertainment class, an experimental class. We watched and critiqued classic films throughout history. Out of the 50 or so classics we watched, this one hit me the hardest. I'm 28 now and this is still my favorite film I've ever seen. It's the most beautifully written films I've ever seen. I've never experienced anything like it since. Not even close.
Such an inspirational movie. Everytime Ive seen this clip in my life it moves me in such a powerful way that its impossible to hold back the tears. Love, finding a way in the harshest of circumstances... Thats what we should all push for... Love no matter what

It almost made me cry, I got really close. But would've done it for me is if he saw his father's body and the scene was like when simba found mufasa. I wouldn't be able to hold back those tears anymore.
No, I still think a father cant love his child like a mother can. It doesnt necessarily mean a mother loves her child more than a father, just that motherly love cant be replicated and neither can fatherly love. Theyre both different things.
@@astrowiz3544 I think what you mean is they're both love you in the different ways. And that's doesn't mean the other one love you less than the other. It's just they love you with their own ways. Is that what you mean?
This ending is absolutely beautiful and truly fits the title. Life remained beautiful for a child because his father made himself see it as such, even when it was truly ugly. Along with The Shawshank Redemption, these two films demonstrate the fundamental importance of Hope in life.
I watched this movie in two different schools. First was back in Grade 4, I was just 9 years old. We all just laughed throughout the movie and we cheered once Guido found the tank. Second was in Grade 7, I was 12 years old. We all felt awe and sympathy for the people. But we were so happy in tears once we found out they survived. And now, I watched it again... I am 18 now, and going to college, I understood everything now. I burst out to tears finding out why he made it all into a game, trying to preserve his son's innocence and I was so glad I remembered the film even though I never understood it from the past years.
The scene with the mother holding her son! I have to see this movie again. Life Is Beautiful. I hope that when I get to heaven and see my family I will be holding my two sons and my husband.

Don't mind me just cutting onions here
Same here T~T
thats a lot of onions ya got there
socallawrence same here. So sad
Are you done yet 😭!!
Anytime I see real footage or even movies of the Allies liberating the camps, I feel a huge sense of pride of what the Allies accomplished. It may have been the greatest accomplishment ever.
Many camps were found without any survivors.
@@nonamenolastname8962 mainly the smaller ones the larger ones had more Jews then the Germans he ammunition.
Giosuè is the cutest little boy I have ever seen in my life. I love when his jaw drops when he sees the tank ❤❤❤
It's hard to not cry over this scene. We Won 😭😭
監督であり主演の彼は天才としか言えない
The contrast between this tiny boy and this huge tank is just cinematically moving. This final scene is phenomenal.
great movie! but man Joshua isn't going to be happy when he finds out he can't take that tank home
AND his Dad died. 8(
That's not the point of the movie. The point is that a true father will do anything to protect his child from the evil that threatens this world. Clearly from the last couple of subtitles, Joshua understood that when he grew up. "This is my story. This is the sacrifice my father made. This is his gift to me."
+MrPjw5 I think he was aware of that. I think he's just making a funny comment based on the kid's excitement about the tank. Made me chuckle. 8)
MrPjw5 the movie is about staying positive in the darkest of situations, by making a joke about the liberation we are showing that we understand the movie.
Today he can buy the tank. I remember that there are some british who own tanks. Or.....he can build it by himself.
My great grandparents town in Italy was liberated by the 92nd Buffalo Soldiers. Thank you.🇺🇸
i love this movie so much. its heartbreaking and beautiful, but this ending makes me so happy
“This was his gift to me.” So heartbreaking. That gift was simply to live. Soooo sad
now I'm crying. He loved them so much!
What some amazing final lines
“ a thousand points to laugh like crazy about, we came in first we’re taking the Tank home, WE WON!”
That look on little Joshua's face when he sees the tank come in is absolutely priceless.
I thought Guido would be the one in the tank. "I've never been more disappointed to see an American." My English teacher said.
I've been disrespected by Americans cuz I'm Welsh.... They can't tell were I'm from they say are u from UK?! That's amazing (no offence)
Honestly I was happy to see the American. It truly meant that it was all over

We watched this in eighth grade and I cried my eyes out in front of the whole class
when he and mamma hug and kiss, gets me every time, can't hold back the tears. Watched this scene with my Italian mamma, wish she was still here to share the tears

When everything goes darker,
There is always a ray of hope
In every period i.e. America
*America was/is/ will always be a country of hope, courage, and positivity.*
Love you America from India.
Precisely. I love Americans. Filipinos love Americans.
this ending always takes me down. It is the definition of a man's role. The guy sacrifices himself to save the boy's imagination and try to free the woman from suffering.
How did the film make use of comedy?
That little boy reminds me so much of my nephew's. They are my absolute Joy and when the little boy was running to his mother I couldn't stop crying.
Right when Joshua says, "we won" i can't hold in my tears
I saw this movie in 9th grade. It was an art school and it was Film and Entertainment class, an experimental class. We watched and critiqued classic films throughout history. Out of the 50 or so classics we watched, this one hit me the hardest. I'm 28 now and this is still my favorite film I've ever seen. It's the most beautifully written films I've ever seen. I've never experienced anything like it since. Not even close.
This movie still makes me cry... I love it so much💖💖
Come on Alex don't cry man, don't cry.
"This is my story"
Oh for fuck's sake, not again.
lmao same
Such an inspirational movie. Everytime Ive seen this clip in my life it moves me in such a powerful way that its impossible to hold back the tears. Love, finding a way in the harshest of circumstances... Thats what we should all push for... Love no matter what
That American soldier was described like such cool savior in last scene of this movie. 🙌
I saw this movie many times and I emotional every time. Left my tears on last scene of cute gentle heart boy when he saw the tank and he rememberd his father says its true, they are win "First Prize"❤❤
I have a feeling if the dad survived and he went over to where Goushie was and waited for a bit he would've said "I told you so!"
the sacrifice of a father even though he died he still made his son live in comfort while in a dire situation
:'( everyrime I watch this ending I cry .. I watched this as a child and this movie never stops amazing me
We meet again...

after the narration part ("this is my story. This is the sacrifice my father made. This was his gift to me") I couldn't hold back my tears. :(:(:(
I've never seen this film but knowing the plot and seeing the clips even brought a tear to my eye.
I have to see this film properly now, such a heart wrenching storyline.
Never in my life have I been more happy to hear an American
In a documentary, i saw a grandma who told that for her, it was so sweet to hear by the first time american soldiers, after being hearing daily the germans with their angry and loud voices.
man, am I so emotion, everytime I see this I cry
my throat full of pain...
I can't stop tears in my eye...
I can't forget this movie in my lifetime...
yes yes yes LIFE IS MORE BEAUTIFUL...
The music and ending is a masterpiece
I almost cried from just this clip. What a movie! I think I'll watch it again soon.
This is the same boy in the film “Gladiator” Maximus’s son
Literally cried out loud at the end when the scene freezes 😭😭😭♥️♥️♥️soooo soooo lovely!!!
One of my favorite movies...we just watched this in my theology class & I was so happy! I can't watch this scene without crying! Just a beautiful, beautiful film.
I can count the number of films that make me cry on one hand, and this is one of them. Happy and sad tears.
no matter how many times i see this movie that ending is just too emotional.
The ending always made me cry.
I love how mama with the outstretched arms is internationally understood. ❤️
How is it possible to have seen this movie so many times and still cry at the ending 🥺🥹
First time crying over a movie...
Same
It almost made me cry, I got really close. But would've done it for me is if he saw his father's body and the scene was like when simba found mufasa. I wouldn't be able to hold back those tears anymore.
I did sorta cried with Terminator 2 ending. But this hits me in another way. So sad though
who ever says a father cant love his child like a mother can, is absolutely wrong, this film proves it.
No, I still think a father cant love his child like a mother can. It doesnt necessarily mean a mother loves her child more than a father, just that motherly love cant be replicated and neither can fatherly love. Theyre both different things.
@@astrowiz3544 how are they different?
@@rodrigo3732 I posted that comment a year ago lmao I don't even remember what I meant
@@astrowiz3544 I think what you mean is they're both love you in the different ways. And that's doesn't mean the other one love you less than the other. It's just they love you with their own ways. Is that what you mean?
@@astrowiz3544 true
This ending is absolutely beautiful and truly fits the title.
Life remained beautiful for a child because his father made himself see it as such, even when it was truly ugly.
Along with The Shawshank Redemption, these two films demonstrate the fundamental importance of Hope in life.
I still cry to see the he other parents who’s children didn’t make it back alive and being happy for that one mother.
How did utilize comedy?
I watched this movie in two different schools.
First was back in Grade 4, I was just 9 years old. We all just laughed throughout the movie and we cheered once Guido found the tank.
Second was in Grade 7, I was 12 years old. We all felt awe and sympathy for the people. But we were so happy in tears once we found out they survived.
And now, I watched it again... I am 18 now, and going to college, I understood everything now. I burst out to tears finding out why he made it all into a game, trying to preserve his son's innocence and I was so glad I remembered the film even though I never understood it from the past years.
Who agrees this scene hits u when he sees his mom again?
One of my favorite movies ever. Never fails to make me cry!
The scene with the mother holding her son! I have to see this movie again. Life Is Beautiful. I hope that when I get to heaven and see my family I will be holding my two sons and my husband.
I cried like a baby. This movie was so heartbreaking and heart warming at the same time.
IM FREAKING CRYING LIKE UGH THIS IS SO SAD BUT HAPPY ENDING IDK

Hearing the American soldiers was so heartwarming to me
This is a movie that I always find myself coming back to every few years or so. So. So. Powerful.

A masterpiece is this film. Grande Roberto!!!👏👏👏
God bless all the countries who fought for the the allied forces against tyranny. May freedom and liberty be upon all the people who desire it.

@Juan I read a book this summer called “The Wave,” which recounted an experiment done by an American high school teacher a couple decades after WW2 (actually happened; not fiction). It looked at how and why the German people could have let things get to the point of the Holocaust, and it’s very insightful. I’d highly recommend it.
@@moriahmanwaring755 I also read that book, I liked it
I REALLY love about the "victory" he said, he doesn't mean the war, he meant like the dad said "Who will win, gets the tank" that's why he was so surprised about sherman.
I loved this movie so much guido was such a good parent
Most emotional thing in this scene is the kid still thinks that his father was alive and they all are going to their home with the tanker.
