CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Guido (Roberto Benigni) volunteers to translate for a Nazi guard, despite the fact that he doesn't speak German.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this WW II tragicomedy, famed Italian funnyman Roberto Benigni (The Monster) portrays Guido, who moves during the '30s from the country to a Tuscan town, where he is entranced by schoolteacher Dora (Nicoletta Braschi, Benigni's real-life wife). Dora likes Guido, but she remains faithful to her pompous fiancé, so Guido has an uphill struggle. Meanwhile, anti-Semitic attitudes lead to attacks against Guido's Jewish uncle (Giustino Durano). Leaping ahead to five years later, during WW II, Guido and Dora are married and have a son Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini). After they are imprisoned in a concentration camp, Guido goes to elaborate lengths to keep his son from understanding the truth of their situation. He tells the boy that they are competing with others to win an armored tank -- so everything from food shortages to tattoos is explained as necessary for participation in the contest.

His love for his son speaks louder than bombs
That’s really poetic
bombs don't speak tho
D a y a n e this movie is a masterpiece!
200th like
@Jack the Gestapo dang
This movie is so unique in the way that the boy's father turned the most horrible situation into a game so his son wouldn't realize the horrors going on around him, this manages to be both a humorous scene and heartfelt all in one
He could have endangered the entire camp residents when they fail to understand the rules
@@hus390 pretty sure that shipped sailed, considering they’re in a concentration camp.
Esta película está doblada al inglés ?
@@hus390 yes but he knew bartolomeo was there longer than them and knew the rules, so he could and did explain them
I loved this part so much! He goes all his way to make sure Joshua never worries or learns about what's really going on.. Awesome dad.
Newblank the actors performance won him the academy award
He screwed over everyone else though. Might have been helpful for them to have heard the actual rules.
It screwed up everyone else. Many others died so his son could live.
Peter Rodby he knew ghere was another man who spoke german and could tell everyone else. he didn't screw anyone over, he even told the others who to ask to get the translation
Peter Rodby well a father will do anything to protect his son
"Do you speak German??
"No"
You know that in that moment, this scene would be memorable
I do
never seen the movie but in retrospect your statement is exactly why i had to keep watching, good call
Joel Embiid's official burner account it’s bad, it’s the father making sure his boy doesn’t figure out their situation
HOOOHOOOHOOOO... XD

This is what the German soldier actually says. Translation: Attention!! Is there an Italian who speaks German?

Yo thanks for this translation! I just watched this in class and they didnt had any eng translations for the german parts (though it hardly makes any difference) i was rlly curious on what they were actually saying
yeah, the close caption translates automatically, u didnt have to bother
Thanks!
Thank you. I came for the translation too.
this is actually funnier when you actually know German and you realize what the guard is actually saying is actually pretty harsh and grim and pretty straight to the point in REALLY stark contrast to Guido's "translations", like at one point he says "you guys are here to work for the glory of the Third Reich!" at another point he's saying "don't even try to run away to freedom otherwise, do everything we tell you without question, if not then we will kill you", there actually is a part about food and he's basically saying "you only eat a little bit and eat it FAST"
I have always wanted to know what the guard was saying. Thank you.
Can you please translate more? Please.
his accent is so thick. It adds to the harsh tone. He also was saying some like don't flee. And something about shooting in the back.
He also said don't rebel or you would be executed
Don't need to know german, I just turned on english captions :P
When I first saw this in middle school I laughed. I am 21 and I now understand the sadness and heroism to this scene
0:54 Its funny how the guy on the left barely has eyes.
This scene makes you cry and laugh at the same time
Just for his son he can sacrifice anything even in an enemy camp at top of danger ...❤❤

1:10-1:17 Oh Tarantino, how could we have not seen this at the time?
I was watching this in my school as a part of our program for Italian lessons.
We laughed so much during the whole movie.

Better translation than RUclips generating auto subtitles for video.
Is there anyone who speaks german?
...
Pay attention, I'll only say this once
... The game starts now. Whoever's here is here, whoever's not is not.
You have been transported to this camp for only one reason
.... The first one to get a thousand points wins. The prize is a tank!
To Work!
.... Lucky him!
Any attempt of sabbotage will be punished by death, you will be taken out in the yard and will be killed with a bullet in the neck
.... Every day we'll announce who's in the lead from that loudspeaker. The one with the least points has to wear a sign saying "jackass" right here on his back.
You should be glad to work for the German empire, the greatest empire of all
.... We play the part of the real mean guys who yell. Whoever's scared loses points.
There's three things you must remember:
One: never attempt to flee
Two: obey every command immediately
Three: any attempt at rebellion will be punished with death! Is that clear?!
.... In three cases you'll lose all your points:
.... One: if you start crying.
.... Two: if you want to see your mommy.
.... Three: if you're hungry and you want a snack! Forget about it!
If you follow these rules you should be quite happy for working here
.... It's easy to lose points for being hungry, just yesterday I lost 40 points because I absolutely had to have a jam sandwich.
??
.... Apricot jam.
??
.... He wanted Strawberry.
And another thing, when i whistle, i want everyone in the field, fast!
.... Don't ask for any lolipops, you won't get any. We eat them all!
In two rows
.... I ate twenty of them yesterday.
With appeal!
.... What a stomachache.
??
.... but they sure were good
??
.... you bet.
I'll leave you now, but you should be getting back to work soon enough
... Sorry if I'm going too fast, but I'm playing hide and seek. I have to go now or they'll find me.
Not to be rude, but your Translation is off. If you want, you can see my translation down in the comments.

The Solider said and the father translated is classic funny.
When I first saw this scene in the movie theater, it just overwhelmed me. What a genius, and he made sure his son was not scared.
Most beautiful film
my favorite part is the the sign that says jackass on his back :)
Humans are beautiful and equally terrifying and we choose which one we are
This was Squid Game before Squid Game.
A few days ago I watched a video of a Syrian father playing the same game with his little daughter, but for real. Search “Syrian father comforts daughter” and watch it.
This reminds of of that Iranian dad who told his daughter that the bombs they hear are actually fireworks and that she should clap whenever she hears it.
One of the best comedians I've ever seen. My favorite role for him is as a taxi driver in night on earth
I swear I absolutely losted it when the officer turned to look at him
Well, now I know I have tiny balls...
Realistically, his kid wouldn't be there with the adults-- they separated the children from the adults at most camps.
BronzeBullBalls the kids were taken to take a “shower” do you remember that?
The shower was a chemical that melted them, old male and old ladies + kids.
Because the boy was told to hide and his fear of showers showed at the second scene with him where he hid inside the cabinet
2:18 ying-boiing
Love this movie!
Dang, imagine not knowing what's going on and believing In this game only to be gassed later.
1:31--
German soldier looking at him like 🤨
Luckily for him, the guard doesn't speak Italian. He wouldn't be amused.
I love this movie
He is so clever than me!
Just try to imagine what all the other prisoners are thinking during this scene. I bet someone of them had a hard time trying to hold back laughter despite the horrors of the situation.
The German guard has a string tied to the end of his index finger.
I wonder what it was reminding him to do
He is the same soldier in the dancing on the street scene from the pianist!!!
Best scene of the film!
It's an epic all time best scene mst be shared more and more

Who put the subtitles on so they could know what the German was actually saying
Next day half of them got executed because they didn't know about the 2 line rule.
This's the best film I had ever watched ❤️
those looked like stalag guards, pow guards, Luftwaffe personnel, not death camp guards, just my opinion, could be wrong
Guys, turn on captions so you can figure out the real message
I watched the movie in 2003 I never saw it since. Very sad.
Otherwise it left me with lasting impression
What this movie clip tells me is that whoever masterminded this film, like all of us, needs to begin honing our thoughts toward forgiving those of whom we perceive being a threat to us and then do the important work of forgiving ourselves. We all need to move beyond the obstacle, which is ourselves, and go forward with the clear intention of healing. Evil is not outside us. Evil exists not within any of us. Evil does not exist, only misunderstanding. Take this wisdom which is not from me but from my understanding of all sources of wisdom and wake up as you did this great and glorious morning from this very distracting dream. Join me and others like me for there are many welcoming you to the fold of a rational way past the darkness of our collective soul. However, do as you will but, You can not escape the Love Of God. Peace be to you all.
German: I will explain the camp rules right now. We will be announcing the schedule from the loudspeaker anyone who doesn’t follow gets shot on the back.

Hahahahahahah 🤣🤣🤣 he said the donkey word
Is that Brock Lesnor?

He may have protected his child from the truth about where they are but he have doomed everyone else in that room.
It's clear you didn't watch the whole movie.

I love the theme of movie. But i'm sad because Guido died
He told him he didn’t speak German
I think the Nazi was suspecting something when he said "Momma".
right I thought that too
Khylen Tro nah he was counting like the german dude
Me too
@Ben Spiceo "Uno, due, tre"
Mama not momma
The son was riding a tank with a soldier at liberation. He probably thought he won the game.
He did think that he won.
The American Railfan pretty obvious
The kid explicitly celebrates having “won” the game at the end.
Even says “e vero!” (Its true!).
It must have broken his heart when he learned later on what his dad did for him.
He literally screamed “abbiamo vinto”.
Before I became a father, I thought this was really funny and loved the son's reaction, but now that I'am a father, the moment I saw again the son's reaction, I could not bare to continue on watching.
Being a father can really change a man a lot.
Damn right
Aaw... your comment is so beautifull
What? So becoming a father means you lose a sense of humor got it.
@@theredbaronlives9889 there are more layers other than humour in this scene, mate.
“I got a woman pregnant. I’m incredibly enlightened now.”
When I first saw this I was a little kid like his son, and I thought the father's words are real because the video didn't had subtitles on german lines. About 20 years later, when I saw the movie for the second time, I couldn't help the tears. The fathership in this scene is so pure.
I love that you got to experience it from the son's perspective. ❤ It would only make it all the more poignant when you watched it as an adult.
The German said that if any of you try to escape, you’ll be shot in the back. The German said to follow orders without asking questions and when they hear the whistle, they will all assemble in the square. I speak German.
Thanks!
Thanks. Great job. But could also explain about 1,2,3 statements, please?
But why did the guard say he spoke german?
Seems pretty standard for any wartime camp tbh.
@@nehrigen He wasn't a guard, he was a prisoner. He said he could speak German so he could say things that wouldn't scare his son.

+Netsky Nety what did he say
+camila alarcon So first he said that the only reason they were there was to work and then he said anyone who tries to sabotage this rule will be sentenced to death. Then he said: you are lucky to be able to work for the great land of Germany. Then he said there are three rules : one, don't try to escape two, follow everything the leaders say and three, anyone who tries to fight back or protest will be sentenced to death. Then he said that : you should be grateful to work here and anyone those who follow the rules will do well. Then he said: And one more thing on this whistle ** everyone needs to assemble at the square. quickly!! After that he said: you'll learn the dimensions of the camp quickly and then he left. :))

FBFTheRagingWarrior They didn't make the jews into soap.
The funniest part was when he said that they were good
This movie crushed me. Utterly crushed me. More than Schindler's List or The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
I went to see this movie when it came out all by myself because none of my family or friends wanted to deal with subtitles... When it ended I just sat there till everyone had left cause I could not stop crying.... Never looked at life the same since then...
This is my all-time favorite movie, along with It’s a Wonderful Life. Both have taken in new significance for me. I moved to Italy last year and have walked streets that were under the influence of war. I’ve gone past Arezzo (the town in which the first half of this movie was set) many times.
Almost 2 years ago, I watched It’s a Wonderful Life less than a week after someone committed suicide publicly at my school by jumping from a high point. I think almost everyone in that auditorium felt the significance of the movie’s message-its entire premise is to dissuade a discourages man from jumping to his death by showing him how loved, valuable, and needed he and his life are to the people around him.
Both these movies are absolutely amazing, because they address the core of humanity full on and do it in such a beautiful, meaningful way.
I honestly dont think Schindler's list was a good movie. I love Spielberg.. but that movie just wasnt that good. But this movie i adore however
When he was shot, I was in denial for the next few minutes. :(

I am from Poland. I watched it in my class when I was 13-15 do not remember. It wasn't funny at all. Germans killed millions of Polish, Jews, Gypsies, and others. This crime should never be forgiven or forgotten. Same for the Stalin. Communism and fascism are the same side of one coin. If someone says he or she is a socialist, watch that person closely. This is how it ends.
@@lubystkaolamonola529 You're right. Not only Jews, Polish and Gypsy people were murdered, but also gay people and disabled people. This is another level of cruelty. As a Jewish girl who was born and been living in Israel all her life, I can say that although the survivors, unfortunately and sadly, are about to disappear, their stories should be always remembered and be told, here and around the world. Such things must NEVER happen again.
