Hey there! It looks like you are a really good hearted person who wants to do right by this young and feral horse and you're going about it all wrong. Chasing him around only scares him and makes him more distrustful of you, that's why he won't come to you. If you take the time it takes to really gentle him, instead of scare him into submission, he will care for you and look after you and you will be safe. Not to mention you will be developing his thinking side of his brain vs working with his self-preservation and self defense. There's a better way, it just takes time and education.

I just started watching a few of yaLls videos, not sure how much experience you've got with horses, but I started with them at age 6 and never stopped. As a kid growing up you either saw me on a dirt bike or bareback on my old dirty draft. Loved my youthful days in summer and the small southern town I grew up in.. I started with the Mustang rescue and adoption my junior year in HS.. 1983.. I had horse sense and experience .. I had common sense as I was brought up by parents that allowed me to think for myself, figure out life without a constant chaperone, make mistakes, admit mistakes and learn from them.. to respect myself, elders and surrounding.. to not lie, cheat or steal and always give thanks to my Lord and Savior above. I was the kind of kid that could drive anything at age 12, could hang with adults or older crowd, I listened to my gut intuitions, never gave into pier pressure, never a follower but the leader of myself, I didn't care what anyone said or thought..I didn't have fear of things, trying new things, I wasn't a dare devil or tested my limits, I knew caution cause it came from inside of me, I can read animals and people, I knew what ever the situation was the only pain I'd feel was from my stupidity and carelessness, never be over confidence or comfortable. With all this said, my first Mustang came from Black Rock Nevada , he was a 2 yr old 4 weeks gelded. Already he stood 15.5 hands. At the end of this life's journey my Big Boy was 16.1 hands, 1388 lbs and solid as a rock. He was with me for 34 years, he was 35.5 years old and I was 51, only 3 sad years ago.. but like you, I had no fear of him and I knew even at my age 17, he was gonna be the one.. my mind set was, if I never ever rode him and did nothing but watch him graze and just be around him that was fine with me, I know I saved him from slaughter or starvation and that's why I did it.. just to save 1 and he was it.. of course after him and over the years I've had the pleasure of about a dozen more and helping others with the process, not all as good as my experience, but each are different and so are people. The thing is you had no fear, nothing to lose and none but yourself to prove anything too.. I like that attitude. So did Skunk. He felt it in you and believe me he respected you not submitted.. it's spiritual with them and I think you did good.. one suggestion.. they will run over you so never get to comfortable and some horses will cow kick, sideways, hurts like hell..also, you used your shed comb on his head and rear, those hurt sometimes even on broke horses.. try a different brush to deshed. But you still did a great job

Omg has that baby ever been brushed?? It's been a very long time... I think you made awesome progress, but after today, I'd work on just getting to know one another where you can walk in and right up to him and catch him. Brush him, bond with him etc. once you can walk right up and put your hands all over him do the saddle again. He needs to trust first and know he's safe then I believe you'll have a whole different horse there. If he's as old as you were told and if he's already put babies on the ground, his studdy attitude may not go away and if it does it'll take longer than a colt.

Hi, Palmer family. Wow, there were some scary moments inside that round pen with Skunk. Vicki, I could hear the fright in your voice. I really do think he'll find his way in time and after castration. I couldn't believe all the hair that came off while Alan was brushing him. Alan, I don't think building a fence can be compared with pregnancy, my friend...hahahaha. But the fence did look awesome! Always nice to see a glimpse of Blake these days. I think the best thing you could do is watch video with Skunk I am sure you will see some better things you could have done all in all he was excellent. You could see where he was scared and he tried really hard for you. Patience, time, love and consistency will help. I am sure you know that. Stay safe.

Ah, gotta love the spoiled stud syndrome. Always lunged for an almost an hour before handling a youngin who was hot and figured being a jerk was okay behavior. Once they got their Spunk out and a little tired, they were more than happy to do what you asked. First time is always the hardest! Especially with a saddle, let the craziness begin! Pretty funny once they realize, it won't hurt them, they settle down and act embarrassed. I think people forget that studs can be sensitive and if their egos get checked,, they start thinking better.. Growing pains are so hard lol! and getting to meet each other, but he'll come around. You two will have a great bond after the first month and that little pony will be spectacular. Kind of like a mouthy teenager! Keep them busy with a job, makes a world of difference! Your personalities really work well together, and you know some horses give no warnings before blowing up. Thats why only a few can do what you do, forgiveness and understanding that they are animals and all horses are a little goofy. Just makes the experience more fun I always say! You're only human, keep up the great work and have fun!

Nice looking boy. I think the only thing I may have to offer is to slow down. Pick something -- wearing a saddle blanket, getting used to being around the saddle, having feet handled -- whatever you want, but just focus on that single thing for your training session. He's young and unbroken, so you can assume everything you do will be new and doing too much at once may be overwhelming. Build trust with him slowly -- his view of the saddle may be negative after he bolted and caught himself on the fence. Start at square one -- catching, leading, grooming, farrier work, ground manners -- build up to more demanding things like the saddle as he tells you he's ready. He looks good overall. He's not overly dominant and he doesn't look nippy like some boys are. Have fun with him.

His muscles need to be gradually built stronger. Lounging him will help plus loosen him up. The saddle was a lot for him because he wasn’t desensitized to it. Same for his hindquarters. It does take a lot of time to train him properly. Lots of videos (Camille’s Mustangs is especially good). Your family values are awesome, and you saved this neglected boy from the slaughterhouse. Skunk, is going to be just fine if you don't push him to fast. He is different from what you are used to. More round pen work. Don't let him get away with not changing directions when you want. He settles down and goes to licking his lips really quick. Round pen him some every day until you get him cut. He is going to be better than I originally thought, that's dollars on the hoof my friend.

Skunk was one worked up horse. Skunk kept an eye on you. Noticed he was licking which is a good sign. The ears were cocked towards you watching every move you made. I always let my horses see and smell items that were going to be on them. Then I would show a blanket to the horse and also let the horse sniff it. I moved slow, as not to spook the horse. The saddle was put on and then taken off. Repeated several times. The horse started to trust me and we were able to get a bit further along with lessons. The horse really turned out well in behaving. I'm not a professional trainer, just someone who tries to think horse.

Start from the beginning. He trusts you as much as you trust him. Not at all. His attitude shows he's been here before. So treat him as green, n untrained. It will be safer for both of you. Deworming n feeding gaining his trust is the first thing, as well as gelding. Good luck n stay safe.

he did pretty good. I think he has potential He learns fast, once he gets past the spook. He is curious about " here comes that man, what is he going to dothis time?" you can even see that as he watches you come to the pen. he will come around. he just wated to see if he could get that saddle off, no meaness there like that big red horse. I wish i had him. I would have loved to pick him up for 150 . but i would keep him. and call him buttermilk
