- There's a massive bait-and-switch at the center of facial recognition technology.
Join the Open Sourced Reporting Network: www.vox.com/ope...
Human faces evolved to be highly distinctive; it’s helpful to be able to recognize individual members of one’s social group and quickly identify strangers, and that hasn’t changed for hundreds of thousands of years. Then in just the past five years, the meaning of the human face has quietly but seismically shifted. That’s because researchers at Facebook, Google, and other institutions have nearly perfected techniques for automated facial recognition.
The result of that research is that your face isn’t just a unique part of your body anymore, it’s biometric data that can be copied an infinite number of times and stored forever. In this video, we explain how facial recognition technology works, where it came from, and what’s at stake.

What App did Aric Toler use at 5:50 to scan and pull more photos and personal information of that Russian guy in red t-shirt?
I tried doing my face on Yandex, and couldn’t get back any results of my actual other photos online. But at least now I know my Russian doppelgänger
Mavrokattou h Prwti Well, now Yandex has a photo of you that you've uploaded for a search. Soon enough it will find real you. 😓
@@Northern_Sea How did you know that Yandex will store your photo? And why did you think that yandex will store that.. Does Yandex have tens of thousands of petabytes of server to store your photos?
Yes just like google

There's really only two things people have in a free society: Freedom of speech and the freedom to go about their daily lives without being watched (privacy). Once you take those away, you're living in a prison essentially.
Read up on panopticism and societies of control. Very relevant to the times we live in.
@@sword_of_damocle5 Well said. We've got a societal structure now where government can watch you pretty much everywhere, but where they lack, the public makes up for it by essentially watching each other and playing the role of "cop". Sort of like a 24/7 snitch service. People with cell phones, dash cams, etc... can record everything that goes on. So it's a case of having the prison guards and the inmates watching the inmates.

not much use if it's just normal camera...
Almost all modern cameras have ir filters.
@@Government_Username yes, but only for scattered, naturally occuring IR (like, by-product of sunlight), not for a beam of IR from an IR LED. I do not agree with the statement at 8:20 I certainly do wish I could be equally honest with everyone in each social realm. I'm not sure the fact that most people act completely different around family, coworkers and loved ones means it's good.
its not necessarily about honesty. its more about behaviour expectations. Would you want to have to act the same way you do with your spouse as you do with your boss?

This is why I don't understand why parents share every single photo of their child. When they child grows up, they will have 20 years of data on them.
I would argue that we SHOULD be the same online and in real life.... and society needs to stop judging one vs the other and be more tolerant. Forcing more and more openness can desensitize society until this stops being an issue.

The idea of public obscurity is very new and short lived in human societies. For 99 percent of human existence we lived in small communities where everyone knew each other. The assumption presented in the video that we are losing something fundamentally human is not well thought about. This issue is much more complicated.

Just gonna say this for everyone watching. I love Vox and all their efforts they put into their videos in regards to educating many people on a broad, plethora of topics. Thank you Vox🙏🏻
I think the core of the issue is that we now have tools that are unlike anything humanity had dealt with throughout our history. A person living in Ancient Rome communicated and expressed themselves in a similar fashion to someone in American Old West. However, within a few generations from that point society has leapt forward in ways unimaginable to our ancestors. We don't have yet the individual and/or social knowledge to really manage these technologies and tools that have basically sprung overnight in the context of human history.
