The whole point of this is to make the Audio sound 'accurate' for everyone when not everyone has the same shaped head/ears. A wider head for example would cause sound on the left to reach the right ear slightly later than a narrow head and the way the sound is heard on the right would depend very much on the shape of the ear too. In theory, if they have designed the Audio around 'averages', then chances are for the majority, the Default Audio Profile will be good enough, if not virtually the same as the Personal one. However, the further away from 'Average' you are, the more it may benefit with positional awareness. The 'footsteps' shouldn't be significantly louder as such, but instead of being somewhere on your left, you know exactly where they are because the Audio is now reaching your ears as it should - in theory bringing you the ability to use 3D positional Audio that the 'Average' people get because that was how its designed for the 'majority'. I think its more an Accessibility Feature for those that may 'struggle' with 3D spatial Audio. A footstep directly to the left of you will have some 'delay' and sound different in your right ear to how it sounds in your left - its not just panned hard left for example - and its the way it sounds in 'both' ears that enable you to pinpoint exactly where that sound is coming from and how far away too. This 'Mix' between the 'left' and 'right' Audio (through just two speakers) gives you the 3D sound - that's why the 'Profile' is designed around the 'average' by Majority (I don't want to say Normal Human hearing standards) but if you are struggling with positional awareness with their 'Audio', then maybe having your own 'profile' will bring those benefits to YOU too. I think a big difference here is what the audio does. Specifically it’s designed to minimize irrelevant noise, while boosting important noises. MP doesn’t have a ton of extra noise, so its effectiveness is limited by default. In Warzone it makes a huge difference.
You should check to see if they configured their EQ/frequencies for the advance audio settings by testing the audio on speakers vs different headphones or through 3rd party spectrum visualizations. I do sound design when I produce music and I notice a lot of differences when I do my work without headphones vs with. I prefer with headphones so I can fine tune everything at all frequencies, and different headphones makes a big difference. I guess I could test this out for myself and see what the differences are actually happening. But I’m definitely surprised that they would release a feature that’s not as good as it is described to be.
Nice to hear other opinions. I actually prefer having the Universal Profile ON. In game settings I have set to the Bass Cut setting. I find that I am able to distinguish audio and sounds better this way. Turning off the setting made everything sound more “muddied”. For reference I use Sennheisser HD 6XX and a FIIO k11 headphone Dac. Would love to hear more from others 🫰🏼
When I turned it on there was something about it that gave me an uneasy sort of queasy feeling almost like motion sickness for my ears, changed my eq settings on my headphone software and made a huge difference, if you’re gonna use it, use it on its own
I’ve been tuning the eq on my Corsair software since the game dropped. Finally got it dialed in this weekend and I went from averaging a 1.4 lifetime kd. But throughout all of eighth prestige I was a 2.2. Audio makes a huge difference.
5:23 I noticed you still didn’t have Spacial Audio turned on in the Sonar settings… I would have liked to see that additional variable added into your testing (with and without the Enhanced Audio - default and personalized).

Agree with everything said in the video.. BUT, on my Headphones, I much prefer the regular Headphone-Mix, as opposed to the Treyarch-Mix (which is better suited for a speaker setup). That comes down to direction of the drivers, meaning sides vs. front source. For anyone interested, I'm working in audio, therefore I'm using my beloved "Beyerdynamics DT 1990 pro" :)
I tested it on PS5 and PC with an Aune AR5000/Fiio K7 pro and either way its Stereo HRTF on both platforms. Both times HRTF sounds less loud and further away on both platforms at even dangerously loud volumes. I tested Treyarch Mix, Sucker Punch and Headphone mix on both platforms and without a doubt for pure footstep audio awareness, Sucker punch is going to be the best option for most people due to the tightest dynamic range. Treyarch mix is also pretty decent but using sucker punch + Enhanced audio off + Asymmetrical Compensation (L-R 250hz = 50 / 500hz = 50 and everything else -50) brings up footsteps and lowers volume on gunshots and environment audio greatly.
That's outright wrong. PS5 has "Tempest 3D AudioTech", an algorithm that does exactly what all the other HRTF solutions do - attempt to reproduce 5.1/7.1 audio output from COMPATIBLE games to stereo headphones. years ago Sony even promised to use the same "send us pictures of your ears" trick to personalize it, but that part was never implemented. You don't want two different HRTFs running at same time.
Dude I’m so so sick of making a class and half of it not even being there when I spawn in … does anyone have a fix for this?! .. it’s ruining my entire experience man
I am glad i am not the only one that found that the enhanced settings should be left OFF. I also use nova pro wireless and keep it flatlined eq while going through an EQ in Atmos instead. Sounds night-and-day better than using the enhanced settings in-game. When testing i also flatlined both headset and atmos and enhanced still sounded bad. Not sure what others are using that swear by enhanced audio, but it was a no-go for me
I’m using a fairly cheap Turtle Beach headset, standard treyarch mix with no enhanced audio. I have no problem hearing footsteps and judging where the enemy is. I’m sure a better headset would be an improvement but I see (or hear) no need for it.
In my opinion, if you are running a very good headset with custom EQ and an EQ application, then enhanced audio in game is useless. Some players have cheaper or subpar headsets with no EQ applications so therefore the enhanced setting in game would be beneficial.
That's just wrong. All EQ does is lower or raise audio frequencies. It doesn't have any impact on direction or distance, which spatial audio does. Obviously a stereo setup will always be strictly worse than a spatial setup if you want better directional audio. I think the direction is more important than the distance. Stereo only has 2 channels, and a spatial setup will simulate several channels. That's the entire point of spatial audio, to turn 2 channel stereo setup into a 5.1 or 7.1.
I got the arctis 7x for series X. Work a treat. Use my own profile on it. When not using headset i use my sonos beam and era 300 setup. Audio is a million times better than launch.
1:27 I make that tactical mistake ALL the time! I’m still trying to train myself to acquire targets in a group in threat order as you approach a group from the side or rear like that. People facing me first. In a perfect situation that’s no one. Next, I try to work from the rear of the group to the front. If I start in the middle or with the lead person it’s easier for people in the back to be aware of what is happening. They can SEE what is going on and react. Start taking out people in the back and the people in the front may take longer to realize they’re in a firefight. Give or take verbal communication or someone REALLY aware of their mini map at that moment. You’re WAY better at this game than I am. It makes me feel a bit better to see you struggle with some of the same things.
Exacrly the same story for me with my astro A40 headsets. The Astro sound profile sounds so much better. I tried it several times but always ended up turning it off again.
To me, my custom Dolby Atmos headphone settings and custom Astro mixamp TR settings both sounded miles better than the enhanced audio setting. Even the default FPS setting in my Gpro headset sounded better and I hate using that setting because its so muddy lol
This may be one of those things where it really depends on how the player perceives where the sounds are coming from. For me, directionality sounds off in general. For instance footsteps would sound like they are directly to my left but would really be closer to behind me (sounds like its west but really its southwest). That issue (for me) goes away while using the universal profile. I've tried it with the Arctis nova pro wireless on both PC and XBOX. At the same time, using the profile does "soften" the sounds so picking up footsteps can be more difficult depending on whats going on in game.
I agree I am surprised people were so mad calling it pay to win when people can already buy hardware that gives an advantage. If anything it would have been kinda nice if $20 made the playing field more even than a $300 headset.
I’ve been wondering if the lean type mechanic actually does anything to help you peak corners, I’m hoping you will test that. Good videos tho man keep it up!
My experience is the same with the "Enhanced audio" setting, it sounded way way worse then the default audio. If feels like you are in barrel and the sound is jarry and not pleasant; its not even worth 1 dollar, let alone 20.
people on PC have been getting a better experience with enhanced audio so what is most likely happening is that however they implemented this, it is not equal across platforms.
Havent tried the personalized audio, but did not like the enhanced. To me, it worsened the separation of sounds and made it harder to judge distances and direction and made everything sound right next to me.
I found NOTHING makes more a difference compared to a quality headset. I find $200 above sennheiser ones suit my liking the most. I hear almost everyone without ninja perk. Especially when they slide. Great they’re fixing this game because I hated it at launch
U cant u need a PC to do that. The only way to use EQ settings specifically on ps5 is to use a PlayStation specific headset like the pulse 3D or the pulse elite

So how is ace using the sonar on ps5 ? Is the test method flawed ? Unless he is using obs or other software to extract the sound to pc and applies the eq on pc level then outputs it to the headset ?
I tried out warzone a couple times. I played with people on the COD discord. We could not hear footsteps in about 40% of our fights, esp when we were out of gunfights and got snuck up on. These guys were seasoned wz vets and we were completely blindsided multiple times. They said the paid audio it better. But hey, that is just my n = 1 anecdotal experience. This should be a feature in game regardless, not something you take out to sell to people to drive down consumer satisfaction and drive up a stock price marginally.
1) Sonar is fucking amazing. Love it. 2) Based on the number of times I hear someone's game echo through their mic, I'm assuming that 70% of console players use speakers. In my opinion (using the Cloud III's), the personalized profile is just a worse version of Sonar or similar software (that are often free or reasonably cheap). I don't have a console, so I can't speak for console.
I'm using a Audeze Maxwell headset with Dolby Atmos settings through windows and when I turned on the enhanced audio it made it sound exactly the way you were describing. It seems like they didn't play nice together. I turned it off completely

I recommend you no thumb Timmy's to just get Dolby and just pay for it once and connect your controller and select game mode option and you're good to go. (Xbox series s over here and it works seamlessly w/ my Corsair's and Victrix)
It depends on what you’re willing to spend. If money isn’t an issue, I’d go with what ace uses. The arctis nova pro. However if moneys a little tight, I’d go with the arctis nova 5x. Even has an app that you can download on your phone and lets you select pre installed EQ’s
Anything labeled "gaming" is shit. You get pounded with the gamer tax for mediocre quality where for the same price, a standalone mic and headphones will always be better.
Sennheiser pc38x are a popular gaming headset pick from most audiophiles, if people dont want to deal with the traditional gaming marketing and gamer tax.
Just buy a nice, non-gaming-marketed audio setup (unless wireless is a 100% necessity for you). A dedicated dac/amp, headphones and a stand-alone mic will always be the best sounding option.
This is very interesting. I've been using the enhanced audio and I might play with it being off. I have a mid level headset. And feel I do well but could always do better
To me on PC with or without eqAPO, Universal is very very good. Personalized has no real benefit as it doesn’t have a database of headphones. HD 800s and HE1000 are both very good, but they are very different and far more different than ear shape’s effect so stick to free one.
u forgot to try with 3d audio on, game might be outputting 3d audio then the ps5 is downmixing to stereo apparently. Which makes sense since the game itself supports 3d audio, also on pc the difference between enhanced on and off is very small, so something definitely going on there on console. Would love to see a test on pc aswell as ps5 with 3d audio.
Universal enhanced sounds worse in general for my Turtle Beach Stealth 700 gen 3 (PS 3D profile off as it is always) but I hear footsteps better directionally. That is why I use that universal profile. I get what you mean by saying that everything sounds further away. However, the way I see it without it everything sounds too close when it comes to footsteps. From now on, universal enhanced audio mode/profile (free) is ftw.
I have Astro A40's TR with mixamp and a profile made for COD and the paid audio profile really stood out to me. I've clutched a couple of ranked games because of the audio alone gave the me all the info I needed. I'm def gonna buy the paid audio for that alone... Also I might try those headphones you got because if that software gave you better audio then I want that!
You can use steelseries sonar universally, with any headset. So also with your A40's, but obviously the presets for games wont be correct for your headset, but it gives you a great way for a software audio mix + equalizer. I personally used it for a while but dont use it anymore, as I now use DTS:X or would use Dolby Atmos if my headset came with a license for it.
For me, I actually just rock the 7.1 surround sound and switch between headphones/theyarch mix and I’m able to hear again lol. That could be because of My headset but it’s loud and enhances my spatial sound
Ace, been loving the videos you put out but just wanted to see if your feeling any desync and server issues going on? There's been an uptick in rage videos of "skill based damage". it's good of you to try the enhanced audio so you could give your thoughts, but if i were you i'd stick to my custom EQ too
I use the arctice steel 7 pro. I'm going to switch off enhanced today. I believe your spot on with foot step tracking.
Most op setup for footsteps =
Windows sound eq ON
No SONAR or other programs
Enhanced audio ON
Its like wallhack…
When I turned it on there was something about it that gave me an uneasy sort of queasy feeling almost like motion sickness for my ears, changed my eq settings on my headphone software and made a huge difference, if you’re gonna use it, use it on its own
I’ve been tuning the eq on my Corsair software since the game dropped. Finally got it dialed in this weekend and I went from averaging a 1.4 lifetime kd. But throughout all of eighth prestige I was a 2.2. Audio makes a huge difference.
what exactly did you change in iCUE?
5:23 I noticed you still didn’t have Spacial Audio turned on in the Sonar settings… I would have liked to see that additional variable added into your testing (with and without the Enhanced Audio - default and personalized).
Did you notice that Michigan blows ass?
@@HcKingPin that tends to happen when a National Championship winning team loses half their coaching staff and 40 players to the NFL, including their star QB. Enjoy the rebuild while it lasts, buddy. Bryce Underwood & co. are coming to keep the dynasty going.
@GoBlueHTB thats a real long way to say that your head coach got suspended twice for cheating violations in the same year so he went to the NFL to avoid the scrutiny of additional suspensions
Good to know!! I love my Nova Pro headset and already feel it is a clear advantage over people who don’t have it!!
Because you turned off 3D Audio on a system level on PS5, the game was outputting 3D audio but the PS5 was downmixing it to stereo audio.
big if tru
@@danjjjatest So he's paid to say good stuff, but did something that made his experience worse? Logic.
Literally not true surround audio id always on whether or not 3d tempest is on
Playstation has a setting that can create a personalized 3D audio profile for you btw :)
Dude I’m so so sick of making a class and half of it not even being there when I spawn in … does anyone have a fix for this?! .. it’s ruining my entire experience man
sometimes some attachments will bug out so you gotta take them off and put them back on
I am glad i am not the only one that found that the enhanced settings should be left OFF. I also use nova pro wireless and keep it flatlined eq while going through an EQ in Atmos instead. Sounds night-and-day better than using the enhanced settings in-game. When testing i also flatlined both headset and atmos and enhanced still sounded bad. Not sure what others are using that swear by enhanced audio, but it was a no-go for me
Thanks Ace per usual
Has anyone noticed how better the audio is while playing casually on a TV? I was able to hear footsteps coming from behind
I’m using a fairly cheap Turtle Beach headset, standard treyarch mix with no enhanced audio. I have no problem hearing footsteps and judging where the enemy is. I’m sure a better headset would be an improvement but I see (or hear) no need for it.
There's more " we got this before GTA6 " than there will be hours played on GTA6
Nice one, didn't realise that steel series had game presets. I'll try that out tonight. 👍
In my opinion, if you are running a very good headset with custom EQ and an EQ application, then enhanced audio in game is useless. Some players have cheaper or subpar headsets with no EQ applications so therefore the enhanced setting in game would be beneficial.
Even with my EQ disabled, enhanced sounded worse.
Audio is a million times better than launch.
this needs to be retested with 3D audio on ngl
I use Schitt Fulla 3 with a pair of IEM's on Sucker Punch and I hear everything incredibly well.
You should have 3d audio turned on, games are designed with 3d audio in mind on both consoles.
I use the same headphones and software. I have been tweaking the EQ for awhile and have SND dialed in pretty well. Big advantage for my gaming.
I’ve been wondering if the lean type mechanic actually does anything to help you peak corners, I’m hoping you will test that. Good videos tho man keep it up!
It doesn’t, looks the same from an enemies point of view.
Thanks for info Ace.
My experience is the same with the "Enhanced audio" setting, it sounded way way worse then the default audio. If feels like you are in barrel and the sound is jarry and not pleasant; its not even worth 1 dollar, let alone 20.
wait.... this isn't click bait??????!!??? sheeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!!
people on PC have been getting a better experience with enhanced audio so what is most likely happening is that however they implemented this, it is not equal across platforms.
I have a feeling the enhanced audio is meant for players that don't use any kind of headset or headphones and just use the TV or a surround sound set.
How do you use Sonar Profiles on PS5? I thought you need a Pc and you can use only the EQ Custom Presets on PS5? 2:02
U cant u need a PC to do that. The only way to use EQ settings specifically on ps5 is to use a PlayStation specific headset like the pulse 3D or the pulse elite
I was wondering the same thing. On console I gotta use my DAC presets
@@rommelthedesertfox3089 You can use EQ Custom Presets with the SteelSeries Nova Pro. The DAC is connected via USB and you can setup EQ Presets in the DAC or via the GG Software. But he was talking about Sonar Presets on PS5 and thats the reason why i am asking.
So how is ace using the sonar on ps5 ? Is the test method flawed ? Unless he is using obs or other software to extract the sound to pc and applies the eq on pc level then outputs it to the headset ?
I wonder about that too. Maybe he uses some kind of audio mixer and routes the sound through his PC and then uses Sonar?
I tried out warzone a couple times. I played with people on the COD discord. We could not hear footsteps in about 40% of our fights, esp when we were out of gunfights and got snuck up on. These guys were seasoned wz vets and we were completely blindsided multiple times.
They said the paid audio it better. But hey, that is just my n = 1 anecdotal experience. This should be a feature in game regardless, not something you take out to sell to people to drive down consumer satisfaction and drive up a stock price marginally.
I prefer to play enhanced mode being off. The sounds are much louder comparatively and easier to hear
honestly, i put on the “enhanced audio” and kind of forgot about it. maybe i should turn it off and see if my gameplay improves lol
Just use an EQ and a good compression ratio for your pick and stick to it. Problem solved but I like to put the EQ after the compression 😂❤
Please make a video breaking down the Enforcer specialist
I'm using a Audeze Maxwell headset with Dolby Atmos settings through windows and when I turned on the enhanced audio it made it sound exactly the way you were describing. It seems like they didn't play nice together. I turned it off completely
Anyone else just randomly hearing someone reloading extremely loud while playing? This happens like 4 times a match for me and confuses me every time
Playing on an Xbox series X, with console set to stereo uncompressed, game audio set to treyarch mix and the enhanced audio on. Using a an OG Xbox wireless headset from when the console launched. For me it’s sounded great. I feel like I hear footsteps great in mp and Warzone. Definitely think just the base universal is working for me.
Thanks for the video ❤
I agree with the negatives but I prefer the consistent ttk
The fact that its even a debate wether HRTF is better or not is sad.
I recommend you no thumb Timmy's to just get Dolby and just pay for it once and connect your controller and select game mode option and you're good to go.
(Xbox series s over here and it works seamlessly w/ my Corsair's and Victrix)
@7:33 Then the question becomes, which headsets are good for gaming? Or rather, are there headsets which are game changers?
When’s the Ace episode with Milo
The regular enhanced audio was also far better for me. Maybe turning off the 3d audio on your ps5 might’ve caused your issues.
So, what is everyone's opinion on what is the best headset for this game?
You all have to turn off 3D sound and put sound output on linear pcm according to enhanced sound makers.
Btw, rocking the Audeze Maxwell headset and go between Art is War audio and normal audio (if I’m on discord or playing solo)
Pay to win audio setting ❌
Pay to win headphones ✅
Used the free version and it felt very muddled vs just the base astro settings
The Steelseries Sonar is goated
Ace, been loving the videos you put out but just wanted to see if your feeling any desync and server issues going on? There's been an uptick in rage videos of "skill based damage". I'm not buying it until someone actually does the testing but feel like it's taking over. My friend told me that he feels he gets nerf mid game once he does good. I don't feel that but it's hard trying to explain to him about it. Hope in the future you talk about it in some way ❤
The universal profile works well for me 😊
I have the same headset and cant figure out how to get the sonar eq onto the dock
If you figure it out please let me know I’m wondering the exact same thing
@ theres a vid on it but the step where he says the headset update will be isnt there for me
I was able to get the sonar eq to the dock but when I switch usb inputs so I can go back to the ps5 it’s not the same
I find the audio better with the immersive 3d off. I can hear footsteps so my better
I've only tried the universal audio so far, I haven't used the free trial for the personalized audio. But regardless, it didn't really make a difference for me at all, sounded the same. I currently use the Logitech G Pro X with Dolby Atmos and loudness eq. I can easily pinpoint footsteps
