  • EOS R5 firmware 1.8.1's headline feature is the introduction of Canon's implementation of pixel-shift multi-shot high resolution imaging. Unfortunately, while this sounds good in practice, and can be a very useful feature in some niches, Canon's implementation of this feature is underwhelming at best.
    In their apparent quest to one up the competition, Canon has chosen to implement this as an in camera compositing operation. Instead of spitting out a series of pixel shifted raws (or JPEGs) for you to process later in software of your choosing, Canon combines the images in camera to produce a single 402 MP high resolution JPEG image. Compounding this, Canon's implementation of the compositing process can produce matrix artifacts in the output image on high contrast areas that have motion.
    All told, whether this is ultimately a useful feature for you will be highly dependent on not only your needs, but the exact subject matter you're shooting as well.

    Thanks for the in depth information on the Pixel Shift mode!

    Thanks for this video, Jason. I will be heading to Guadalupe Mountains National Park in West Texas this weekend and taking my R5. Conditions there are almost ALWAYS windy, so I will just be using the "normal" focus stacking menu in Drive Mode, tab 5.

    Hi , I haven’t seen a single review that convinces me even as mainly a landscaper to bother loading this firmware. 🙁

    Just downloaded it because of this, The 402mp is cool, but i dont really know what id use it for becasue of the camera shake,

    Good you're back! This feature seems slightly useful in It's naturen.

    Same mesh artefact detected as well. Apparently does not happen in someone's very famous family (let's say randomly> Northrup)

    so it takes seversl photos that are shifted and merges them together? How many pictures are taken?
    It might be alright as long as you are aware of the limitations.
    The Canon blurb says that DPP needs to be upgraded too.

      It shoots a series of 9 images to stack. And yes, if you are aware of the limitations, and can use it in the extremely limited conditions where it doesn't artifact, then you do get a decent result.
      So far as I can tell the DPP update is just the usual new firmware new DPP routine form Canon. There's nothing in DPP that I can see that solves the super resolution artifacting problem. Though admittedly, I don't use DPP so it's possible I missed something buried in a menu somewhere non-obvious.

    If Pixel Shift worked with flash, it would be an excellent adjunct to High Resolution reproduction photography in museums and the cultural history sector of photography....

    I noticed the artifact goes away if you deactivate lens-level image stabilization...

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  Год назад +1

      When you enable super resolution mode, the camera disables the lens's IS system regardless of the position of the IS switch.
      Moreover, the artifacts are also possible when using non IS lenses too. The images in the video showing the mesh artifacts were shot with an RF 28-70mm f/2L USM.
      I wish it were as simple as just turning the switch off on the lens, but that doesn't seem to be the case in practice.

      @@PointsInFocus I was just referring to my personal experience of a couple of days ago... But then again it could be anything: I didn't test it thoroughly...

      Sorry, what I was trying to say is that I think you just got lucky in your testing. I've certainly run inot that with mine.
      And this is a big pat of the problem I have with Canon's implementation. Sometimes, you just get lucky and it works really well even when there is some subject motion. Other times, you get artifacts that ruin the image. This wouldn't be a problem if we could either just use this to shoot a series of raws that we could composite later (my preference), or have the option for it to shoot a single un-composited raw/jpeg as part of the group as a safety image this would be much more useful.

      @ridni2388 Год назад

      @@PointsInFocus I agree indeed... I was also hoping for 9 Raw Images... Anyway I checked more "high res" pictures and the cast majority has this artefact ALL OVER, not just in movement areas... Unfortunately...

    so it dosent work with flash?

    In my dreams, they would just find a way to deactivate the low-pass filter so it would be as nice as my 5DSR. All this fuss for a jpeg doesn't seem worth it.
