I don't get how a franchise known for it's graphics and outstanding artificial intelligence somehow created a game that lacked both those things

I enjoyed FEAR 3. I just wish the game was longer than 8 missions.

F.E.A.R. 1; awesome. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin; awesome. The expansion packs Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate; awesome. F.3.A.R.; Took a shit on the franchise so big that it hasn't been seen since. Either bring back Monolilth or kill off F.E.A.R. before anymore damage can be done to it.

sub309 Also, Colin said it well about multiplayer--Fear 3's multiplayer is pretty special. Specifically, "contractions" was a lot of fun when I played this a few years ago. Shit gets genuinely tense and dreadful at the higher wave levels. And I think there was something bad about being outside for too long, right? I remember a panicked feeling of running outside to grab powerups and hurry back inside before something bad happened. I forget what the bad thing was, though.
Also, in single player, I was super impressed by the phase commanders. Hearing radio chatter and then witnessing the presentation of their entry through one of those portals (light, the weird, heavy sound effect, seeing those big bastards duck through it...) was a pretty dark experience.
TrumpKingsly I do agree with this. The bad thing about being out too long was getting surrounded by enemies and the fog makes it hard to see. That mode does get very intense, I played it with some friends and it was alot of fun, I screamed alot xD it's really hard, we died at the wave before the last one. I have the PC version but I play with a controller, I was playing it on my old computer(which is not meant for gaming) and I had some input lag so going outside getting the powerups was horrible for me xD I don't remember too much about the single player(it's been well over a year) xD I remember it being fun on co-op but decent on solo.

Did not enjoy as much as the first two, felt like it was trying to emulate Call of Duty or Left 4 Dead rather than being its own identity. Not a horrible game, but not a great one either. It's just kinda... "eh." I'd give it like... I dunno, a 6.
Main gripe of the game is the small mag sizes compared to the first two. Enemies felt bland and uninspired, with only a couple really standing out, such as the Phase Commanders and Scavengers. Could go back and play it, maybe, but could also have gone the rest of my life without and not have missed it.
I get it. It's a minimum budget game

this was prob the most "unbiased" and "fair" review i've ever seen by ign..he just simply stated pros and cons..and his own personal opinion didnt saturate the overall review..this guy should do ALOT more of there video reviews..imo
This game was so sick! Already beat the campaign twice and I will beat it at least 2 more times. Very unique and very fun! I find the strength being the co-op campaign, the interaction and team work is incomparable. The only problem is I wish the campaign was longer. multiplayer is also very unique and fun, still would like to have some traditional team death match though. Everyone should get this game, especially if you like co-op fps!
Fear 3 is a standard sci-fi thriller with suspenseful sequences, a strong storyline, awesome effects with a beautiful moment right before the finale, dazzling graphics with a creature that reminds me suspiciously like the Fairy Eater from Pans Labyrinth
Straight up underrated game
In my opinion nothing beats the 1st F.E.A.R.

An absolute blast. Hugely entertaining from start to finish, and loved all of the co-op and multiplayer modes. The challenges/scoring keeps me playing, though.
@MJDT11 I couldn't agree with you more about the story. Your also spot on about the 3rd one being the only one worth playing, (unless you have really low standards), as its a much more refined and polished game. As for the controls i don't get how anybody could think fear 2 had the best, as they were obviously much better on fear 3. But everyone's entitled to have bizarre tastes in controls.

"Soul King" mode is a free-for-all mode, and "Soul Survivor" is a versus mode similar to that of Halo's "infection". Trust me, there is competitive multiplayer in this game and it's really kick-ass.
This game was suck a disappointment for me. I played all of them and I can't even remember one thing about F3. That's how dull it was in the "fear" department. :( Other than that it was a decent game. Just not scary in at all. Maybe I'll give it another playthrough since so many of you say you liked it.

@DTC54 but if you think about it, Treyarch took maybe a year and a half (give or take some time) to make World at War (meaning production probably started around 2007), where Valve started making Left 4 Dead mid-2005ish. Also, Zombies in WAW was a last minute effort, where L4D was about zombies from the start...

It was an okay game but it didn't feel like F.E.A.R game at all.
I find it odd that the written and video reviews made no mention about the fact that FEAR 3 has a different tone than what its predecessors set before it. The piano chords the flashbacks that went along FEAR 1's superb atmosphere is absent here. I could feel John Carpenter's influence when I played the game and while it was a great experience, it didn't make me feel I was playing a FEAR game. I hope they launch a FEAR 4 (and do it right).
Honestly, my only real interest in this is the co-op story mode and the fact that it is F.E.A.R. I finished the first FEAR and the story was interesting, kept me wanting to better understand it. I played through 2, but it was difficult and I never actually finished it, aside from the fact that I only borrowed it. As of now, FEAR 3 is at a price of $50 and I'm hoping it drops to $30 before I consider a purchase. I honestly love the horror aspects of it compared to COD and it's realistic approach.

@darkblazeman He mentioned what the story line was about, but he didn't want to give anything away. I agree he could have said if it was expanded, or bad or something, though.

@cokelaere74 and the problem is? New and Diffrent doesnt mean the same thing. It does nothing NEW in terms of bring new elements to an already well used world of FPS gameplay mechanics, but it is DIFFRENT in terms of the mood, story, MP modes,enemies, wich sets it apart from other FPS games. How u got 78 thumbs up is beyond me. It's an FPS, like all other, but it's one of the VERY few Horror FPS games, ergo, diffrent.
Only down side to me is the cut scenes where it's hard to hear the dialogue because of the music
@AstronoughtNugget What he basically mean is: IGN likes COD. Anything with the words "Call of Duty" in it is automatically scored over an 8.5.
FEAR was such a great game. The whole point of the game was so that what you DON'T see is scarier than what you DO see. FEAR 2 and 3 ruined this, making it another jump out of the closet horror game. I remember the anticipation of walking down long and dark hallways in the first FEAR, then being relieved that nothing happen, only to be scared shitless by Alma slowly lurking in the dark or seeing moving shadows of people that aren't there. Not to mention the chilling music. Bring back FEAR!
Reviews are their own opinion, so STOP COMPLAINING IF YOU DIDN'T AGREE.
**JUST FINISHED playing it** - Fucking epic game. The creators did almost everything right. Note at 4:00 the reviewer had no real issue with the game. Only reason this game didn't get 9.0+ is because of the graphics. -- It does bother me A LOT this reviewer didn't mention any of the strong points in this game, which leads me to think that he didn't put much effort into this review. The story got so good at the end; the ending was epic; the cut-scenes were insanely awesome. This game deserved 8.5
The only few things that disappointed me of this game are 1. Campaign was too short, 2. Not enough scares & 3. The ending seemed too simple. But I really have fun playing this game and the multiplayer is fun as well. And I have a feeling F.E.A.R. 4 will be made or F.E.4.R. haha.

Plus Soul King and Soul Survivor add another dimension to death match: In Soul Survivor 1 or the 4 players needs to possess a body, in order to kill the others and meanwhile the other 3 need to prioritize their victims as they could be next in line. Then there's Soul King where all players tactically possess enemy AI, again, in order to kill one another. It's just so much more interesting than running around endlessly slaughtering one another without another thought.
i played the beta and comparing that and the stuff the directors were showing us in 2010 the comparison between this and the earlier version this was nothing like it except in gameplay. this game could have been SO much more like what they were talking about how the contractions would happen randomly and paranormal monsters will shortly follow and just wreak havok on both you and your enemies. how fettle could find secret paths to take and go his own way. endings choosen by behavior not score.
@TwoScrewsLoose FEAR 2 doesn't recognize the expansion packs of the first, either. They aren't even considered canon. They were developed by TimeGate studios, not Monolith. Only Monolith's titles are considered canon.
@Sbrff I would be VERY VERY generous if i said FEAR 2 scared me abit in some parts. Did i mention about being very generous? I didn't have the luck to play FEAR 1 though.. The third installment is a standard shooter with fun coop. In other words what the developpers wanted (good coop that is) they did it, but they took away the atmosphere, which was good in FEAR 2
This review is very good. It takes into account all of my thoughts... except one.
F3AR is a solid shooter, with great graphics (except that paxton fettel looks nothing like he originally did) and sound.
But the story BLOWS. It literally takes the events of the original FEAR's expansion packs and throws them out the window. The story is, quite honestly, stupid. It doesn't live up to Fear 2, and it doesn't come close to the original FEAR. There is no horror to Fear 3.
I was very dissapointed.
Just played through the game last nite and this morning and I have to say this is a great game. First off I didnt have any saving and loading issues that the reviewer mentions but I agree that the enemy A.I isn't always great. However you will absolutely love this game its so so fun to play through. Im usually a die hard CoD & Battlefield fps shooter kind of guy but this game had me hooked from start to finish.
I just finished the FEAR 3 campaign as pointman and their were some parts I didn't understand can someone please explain also their will be spoilers so anyone who doesn't want to know what happened stop reading. First of all, am I correct to say the cut scenes between each interval with the kids are Fedel and Pointman and their both Alma's children? Also when they talk to that guy at the end of interval 7 is that the guy you played as in FEAR 2. And does Alma die when she gives birth at the end?
Warning for PC (Steam) users: The game deletes your saves (including your Rank, campaign, options/settings - everything!) after the new patch. I think Day 1 Studios (or more like Fail 1 Studios - this game is so ridiculously bad in many ways... after you've spent more time with it you'll realize this) rolled back the patch.
And: Do NOT mess with the options.cfg-file they tell you about in the Patch News. Even though it tells you you can do stuff like change the default Field Of View( =awesome).

Bad AI? Dude, on Commando which is pretty much on regular mode, the enemies like to flank you, use cover, toss grenades to get you out of YOUR cover, and the bosses phase and teleport behind and toss flashbangs to blind and then try to kill you. The AI is clever. And if you think they are smart on that mode, just play on insane. Its like the AI know what you are gonna do before you even thought of it.
@theguyyouate6 Not really. Some people actually have passion in the storyline, its what makes the game a new style instead of first person shooter, after first person shooter, after first person shooter.
i realize they were probably trying to be different when it comes to multiplayer by not using the usual team deathmatch set-up, but that's what i like, and i probably would be inclined to buy it if i knew the game would last after i'd beaten the campaign. sorry i don't like wave-based co-op, sometimes i want to play a little pvp.

Well, it depends. If you're really into storylines, yeah. But FEAR's storyline is just WTF over and over again.
All you really need to know is that pointman and fettel are brothers, Alma's their mom, Pointman killed Fettel in the first game (but somehow he came back), and Alma is pregnant.
why would you give it a negative for 'loading hiccups'? the PC version loads in seconds. Every single game i've played on my PC loads in seconds, while every game i've played on my consoles makes me wait 5 times longer.
here's a protip, when reviewing a GAME, don't give a mark against it for a CONSOLE flaw. but i don't even know why i bother..
If you think about it if IGN would judge only on game play a lot of games would get better scores but if they only judged on aesthetics then a lot of other games would get better scores as well.
@sreal14 like @nwolwo said, L4D was announced before CoD: WaW (CoD was announced early 2008 @ the latest, and L4D was announced in mid-2005). Release dates don't matter when it comes to development lol
There were myriad aspects they didn't delve into or just ignored from the first two games though. I played to death the first two games and FEAR 3 doesn't really feel like it belongs to the series. Google for "FEAR 3 review Imbacore" to see my review. It's one SOLID shooter though so I got my money's worth nonetheless. Flaws aside, it still is an awesome game. I'll replay it again one of these days.
@TheNJGamers but don't you think it's just a little weird that just a few months before WaW came out, they suddenly "announced" zombies?

This weekend, I want to buy either FEAR 2 or FEAR 3.
I'm basically wanting to play it, mostly for story and to scare the pure piss out of my body on weekends. Not so much for multiplayer, but I'll surely give it a try.
BTW, this would also be my first FEAR game.
@dathip... Dude just because YOU didn't like fear 3 doesn't mean others won't either. It may not have been as scary, or captivating...but as far as an fps goes, this is a good solid shooter. Its lots of fun if you need a break from the generic COD.

Actually I was pleasantly surprised by the game. It's definitely not FEAR 1 but I still think it draws more of the successive elements from the first title. And I thought the opposite of the final verdict, the AI was awesome! And the online is good - but that lobby is always dead. The graphics aren't the greatest but in most circumstances I thought they did a really good job creating a familiar, eerie setting.
@cokelaere74 That makes sense, he's saying it's a generic game, but for people who want a new shooter, generic or not, they should check it out.

@itZYounGV Yes they did, it is one of the most popular games with zombies (if it isn't the most popular), so it will be recognizable by almost every gamer.
@ItsJamesCuhhh if you pre-ordered Fear 3 they gave you a factory-sealed copy of Fear 2 with it.
@cokelaere74 No it says that the single player has nothing NEW for fps player, but it allows for something DIFFERENT. Meaning it has the same kind of fps gameplay, but the horror genre makes it different from say, the most popular (Somehow...) shooter, CoD.
When it comes to horror, be it a game or movie, it really depends on people's tastes and what scares them.
For example; I, myself, was never really scared by the Resident Evil franchise, but then I played FEAR 1 and wet myself.
I think it's unfair when people say this game isn't scary.
There were a few parts that made me jump, and the tension created through the music, sent shivers up my spine.
When you say that it isn't scary, remember, it's not scary to you, but it may be to others.
@sfritts10 actually cod waw had zombie mode first before l4d had its survival mode. survival mode was added to l4d in a dlc pack
@CyclonicDeath uhhh.... I think blackice was just implying that that is the attitude IGN seems to have when reviewing an fps, I don't know that they were actually saying they love COD....
If they had kept the same engine from FEAR 1 the game would be so much better. Plus, in FEAR 1 there was a strong difference between the parts where you are an unstoppable killer and the part where you run scared of the dark like a child, not in this one...
FEAR 3 looks fucking dope! I've never played the first 2 F.E.A.R games, but the multiplayer looks cool. BTW Does Fear2 come with a regular copy of F3AR or does it have to be a Limited Edition or some crap? Also, if I buy it used will fear 2 still come with it?
I'm looking at F.E.A.R. 3 now on steam and it says it's £12.99 :( Did I miss it?
Really, the only problem I have with this game is that it has almost NOTHING to do with the F.E.A.R. series. Still, one of the funnest games I have ever played, especially playing for the second time as Fettel. Just don't expect to be scared.

@rugerg18 no fear 3 had the best control for console, the controls for fear 2 were the worse of the lot. and the story couldn't have been more mundane. its like they grabbed the grudge, akira, and a first person shooter and made a scrambled egg out of it. don't get me wrong those concepts could work really well together had a good writer taken the responsibility of putting them into a game. never said anything about the 1st one having bad gameplay ether, thats the one thing they did get write.
@BlazingsNL I think fear 1 and 2 focused on scary, fear 3 focused on the whole first person and co-op.
@DankDroBlunt1 Does it have a lot of replayability? Like a game I probably won't end up trading in? I have a friend that would play co-op with me for the first time....and multiplayer....Is it worth it?

I think people are missing the point here. You guys were much younger when you played Fear 1. I was scared of Doom 3 back then and the other day when I played it, it was the opposite.

The review also failed to mention that the actual story is 5 HOURS LONG. 5 HOURS. That's barely 3 levels of a game worth paying for. And it just wasn't scary at any point in time because NOTHING poses a threat. After you get a little used to the gunplay you just shoot everything.
I liked all 3 games. This one is certainly the least horror driven but it still had its scary moments and I like the fact that you can play as both brothers, each of which have different styles of play. The AI is good though a couple of times I cought a few enemies just standing doing nothing when they should of been trying to kill me. Those moments were rare though. Love all 3 games. hope they make a fear 4
I'm a bit confused, thought the graphics where great (but not amazing). This game is very simular to killzone, but feels much more solid. Points system is a great idea btw!

Does this game have a lot of replay value? I need to know in like, 5 hours to see if I should get it alot. I WILL have a friend to play co-op and multiplayer with, so....is it worth it?
